@@howyoudoin2969 Watch A year and a Half in the life part 1. You will see Hetfield play that low assed distorted part. They tuned a guitar way down to add to that part.
@@JPX64Channel haha just listened to this and that's the first thing I thought about. "I wouldn't ask you to do a drum solo if your arm fell off. Okay buddy? Pal?" lol
@@jonathanryan2915 it is edit: actually it's not.. lol my bad.. I just checked the video where he's recording that part and it clearly is a guitar.... sounds bassy as fuck though
I believe he used a spector bass on this album, they have a pretty solid tone. So a bass with a harder wood, P/J pickups (active), and a sans amp bass driver would get you somewhere near.
Easy, Spector NS2 (this was a 1981 NS2 Haz Preamp), Ampeg SVT II Pro, SansAmp! There you go! Now get ready to fork over $$$$$$$$$$$ because the NS2 will cost more than the rig and sansamp.
If i can just play one song on the bass and than die - this was the one to pick for me!!! Hell yeah... Jason is an beast on the bass!!! 🤘 He seems to hit the strings with a hammer.
Almost every rock & metal song has 2 blended basses, one the direct injection (DI) signal going to a distortion pedal, and the other through a cabinet, but I never noticed this in the studio song.
Yep, baritone guitar overdub in this one. But interestingly there's an outtake from the making-of video in which Bob Rock mentions samples in addition to the DI, miked and "boombox" tracks. Didn't sound like he was joking, and sounds like it was just for Sad But True. ua-cam.com/video/6kqHtKBfSXs/v-deo.html
You can also hear some octave doubling in the bass in this video..esp. noticeable in the choruses when the bass has to play higher notes. Don't know if that's the sample bass or just a subharmonic effect. But the overall effect is beefy AF!
It's not uncommon for a singer to record a "scratch track" for the other band members to play along to as they record. What you're hearing is bleed from that recording into the microphones that recorded the bass/drums.
Why does it feel like there is a lot of room in this mix and no that much of a close mics going on, most of the guys do it the other way around, this sounds dope tho
this Why That song is Heavy
This song has always been heavy check out the live version
Lars grooves the hell out of this song !
Yep, BUT listen to how he attacked the drums as well...massive difference and it came across in the recording..incredible!
There's like 40 takes edited together to make this final one. Engineer Randy Staub deserves tons of credit. Editing 2" tape is tricky.
All the black album. So groovy this album
Jason bass is a lion
Foxbody Boogie nah it’s distorted bass

not practicing, it's a scratch track to help Lars know where he's at at all times. It's how music was recorded in the old days. No grid BS
5:18 Lion
That is fucking cool. Good catch.
James is playing a low tuned guitar for that growl sound
Brutal bass sound \m/
'81 US Spector NS-2 + Newsted heavy attack = fuck yeah! \m/
iirc the highly distorted "bass" notes played during the theme/chorus is actually James playing his guitar through a bass cab.
Daneldctro baritone to be precise 😁👍
that pic of lars goes so hard
Favourite metal song ever. That groove is fucking ridiculous, so much swagger.
You can actually hear Het's baritone in the main riff!
Buried in the album mix
That's the bass
Edit: o wait ur right
Yup, starts just after 1:30, and picks up several more times throughout.

Let’s go Jason
wish I could this kinda bass tone

@@muriloninja Plus lots of compression in post production. LA-2A most likely.
Jason had impeccable taste in gear, IMO. Spectors and Sadowskys - amazing tone, but at superstar prices.
I'm pretty sure James did overdubs with a baritone that are being included in this
That groove tho
That verse riff is so underrated
Just like everything in the world, right?
@@omegaprowler3683 No just the verse riff

Dat bass Groove😀🤘
It got so much low end its sick! Say what you will but Newsted was thier most solid player for sure.
I hear that you're an amazing architect.
Everything is cool! Thanks, but where is Jason near the Lars?))
The Hetfield God Sound in the back! 😝👌🏽🔥🔥🔥
Damn, Papa Het's guitar sounds so fucking great!
cool to hear this! They both played really great.
I wonder if it was Bob Rock's Idea to have the overdub distortion bass track.
I’m sure it was, Bob really liked Jason and kinda protected him a little when they were producing the album.
It's not a bass track, its a baritone guitar with distortion.
THAT BARRITONE GUITAR ;)
just wow for bass!!! wow!!! it's awesome!!!
2 bass tracks! One with overdrive from the mic sound from amp for the chorus and the direct. You hear James in the background!!

Baritone guitar.
DI stands for Direct Input

Jason🔥 what a bass🤘
That bass💪
Again, with so many other drum tracks of this album you can hear james practicing/recording in the background :D Comical to me

Jake Nielsen They live tracked the band and sent only the drums to the tape. Bob liked how they played live so he had them track like they were live
Touches the soul 🎸🎤🤘🥁
the Het baritone guitar sounds awesome
Baritone guitar there too?? Watch a year and a half to see Het playing it.
It sounds like there was quite a bit of drum bleed going on when the drums were being recorded since James was in the same room as Lars.
Awesome!!! 🤘
also at 3:23, i have always that that is an awesome drum fill!
What dave saw when he woke up
😂
The bus ticket is in his other hand. 😜
Insane.
Jason newstead finally got his credit on this album
Uh? This isn't And justice for all.
drums and bass lines alone is GOD LEVEL HEAVYYYYYY
man so great, can you upload this song with only BASS and VOCALS pls

I'm getting "god that failed" intro vibes from this
hell yeah!
Nothing like the sound of a Spector bass!
the beggining sounded like devil's dance
Jesus. Fucking. Christ!
rock rock 😎
Cara, tá uma versão melhor d q com as guitarras. Vez en'quando é bom ouvi as "autópsias" d algumas músicas.
What it felt like drinking apple juice and rolling a fake cigar when you were 9 years old
didnt knew the bass playing different in outro in 04:58 cant unhear it now
As a bass player, I've always known. 😁😁👍
It sounds more badass than the actual finished song from the album. Can't believe.
this is more heavy than the original version
Interesting, you can hear James's scratch vocal bleeding through the drum mics.
Crazy to hear the tape edits.
Jason Newstead wasn't a bad bass player at all, sucks that the band bullied him too much that's why he left the band years later
He is not a bad bassist
Why does it feel like there is a lot of room in this mix and no that much of a close mics going on, most of the guys do it the other way around, this sounds dope tho
James ? 1:31
Yes, you can hear him throughout the recording. The drum mics picked up his vocals as they recorded the drum tracks live in the studio...

That chugging sound is Hetfield on guitar
Docteur666 actually Jason recorded that with a distorted bass :) it's on the black album documentary
James recorded it with a baritone guitar :)
baritone guitar with wall arround james
Baritone guitar yeah
Lars recorded that chugging sound with a wah stick

cool double amp sound
I'm glad my favorite drummer is not the best.
So that's how they get that distorted sound on duuhhh.. duh duh. Heavy
Why is there james hetfield on lars’ forehead
The drum mics picked up James singing...

I wish but he won't return to Metallica plus he has whiplash
Rob is doing a damn good job. Jason was a good bass player, better than I will ever be, but Rob Trujillo is immensely better.

Baritone guitar !!!
POV: You're not Cliff

F*cking concrete mixer!
Ironic that the bass is the thinnest sounding instrument on this song.
