Yeah. If studio boss knew beforehand that Cliff was gonna pass away, maybe he would have shelled out money for a underground heavy metal band's debut album in an era which was ruled by pop stars & hair metal bands
Cr33p3rKid Ranging from 100 used to 250,000. I say you should buy an Ibanez SR or GSR if you're learning. Nice entry level instruments for 100-300 usd. Worth it! You can't go wrong with a Squier Jazz (very versatille!) for around 200 dollars either! I was going for the Cliff tone, got some really nice info, but it won't be cheap.
Ride the Lightning was said to be Cliff's and Kirk's album pretty much because they really took control of the song righting etc. i think the call of ktlulu was the only one that dave had helped right in the early day but Cliff and Kirk really wrote some great riffs.
can you imagine, short career but lasting effect on the music world and die hard fans like you and me carrying the the music to share and giving someone an awesome experience.
i love the sound of this bass. it has a real raw yet classic sound to it if that makes any sense. but regardless cliff burton is my number 1 inspiration for bass playing. RIP Cliff
Definitely. Bassists prefer different styles and tones, be it to either "cut-through" or to "support." Some play more notes while others just sit on that E with a pick generally. If anyone has ever heard a song without bass or been in the studio to record, you KNOW that when the producer puts in each instrument one at a time (starting with guitar, drums, vocals and then finally bass) it makes a huge difference.
@@sharonbones1655 Hell yeah, Genes playing us insane. Btw guys listen to "My Last Words" by megadeth, the bass is nasty. Same with holy war (just bass and drums)
I think it's usually drums-bass-guitar-vocals, though. After all, the drums and bass lay the foundation of the song. I remember reading that during the recording of Master of Puppets, Cliff actually recorded his bass tracks after James' rhythm guitar tracks. This was considered unusual.
Fade to Black is one of my favorite songs of all times. I wonder why Cliff thought about fading away… he was such an extraordinary human being maybe he was too much for this world. I hope that Cliff have found his peace. Love you forever wonderful creature
My electric is broke. Had to order a replacement part for the floyd rose bridge. But I whipped out the spanish guitar, checked the tuning and played along. I actually play the acoustic part faster than is necessary when playing this song on my own. So this felt easier than I expected to play along to.
You make a good point about fingers versus a pick. However, what most people do not know is that music engineers nowadays will quantize the bass track to match the kick drum. Before computers they would cut the recording tape of a bass track and tape it back yo sync with the bass drum. By the time Jason was on board alot more money ( bigger budget) was likely invested in perfecting the recording process.
Its different being a good bassist, than being a good bass player... I also think that frank and david are great bass players (i cant judge if they are better than cliff, because cliff died so early, he could have been even better), but cliff had real knowledge about bass and music theory, he could even write a bassline in his head, pass it to a paper, and it sounds exactly like he imagined it, he was a way better musician and bassist.
Can someone tell me his eq setting that he uses on R.TL.? I've almost have his sound but it's just not quite right. if anybody knows please tell, I'd appreciate it.
If you ever wondered why Kirk's solos from this era are so fucking perfect... just listen to the bassline. Kirk's just following along with Cliff! I won't say "easy", but composing a guitar solo on top of Cliff's basslines don't take virtuoso talent to write. Cliff already did the heavy lifting. Just pick a matching scale, and run up and down the neck w/ it. E pentatonic phrygian in this case (and most).
Sure, Frank's not impressive, but no player has to be hugely impressive. Frank's a great ensemble player and performer. And looking at Dave vs. Cliff for the few years Cliff was alive, well, Peace Sells came out the same year as Master of Puppets. They both display an admirable command of their instrument in those albums, albeit in different ways: Cliff in a more melodic sense, Dave more in a rhythmic, background role.
Ohh the song is DEFINITELY effected when the bass isn't even present. It may seem like the bass isn't even present but thats because it's mainly a harmony instrument just like someone else said. Also too, cliff was more focused on mids and cutting through the mix instead of supporting with a more bass-ier tone. Therefore, it doesnt help Cliff's part that much.
Sounds so dark and sad....Rest In Peace Cliff
More like rust in peace amirite
I
Vic Rattlehead when ever you hear thunder its just cliff playing in heaven
Wow thanks, I´ll never Forget this idea now :)
you saved us..how do you get only drums and bass?
No matter how acoustic or guitar-centered a song is, it can still have an awesome bassline. Demonstrated here perfectly.
MrDudeguitar0 same with the Fight fire with fire intro 🤘🏻
It's so crazy how this sounds like an entirely different song in the first minute or so...
because nothing is playing? Sorry if that's the joke. very sorry
That's because in some parts he actually played Bass and NOT fucking rhythm guitar on Bass.
I wish their first albums had the black album mixing. The bass was so present and Cliff definitely deserved that kind of treatment early on.
Yes, Cliff's bass was something special. Check out my bass-enhanced video of The Call of Ktulu.
That didn't happen because he was a very sloppy and messy player (very noticeable) unlike Newsted.
@@larsulcer7156 he was a kid

Cliff Burton playing bass is better than porn.
No doubt
Cliffs playing is porn

Cliff always makes the horns while playing (like how Kirk flips everyone off lol). I love that.
Lol, Cliff did that because of a finger injury he had on his pinky from fishing which made it hard to bend all the way (Sorry for late comment)
Lars inspired me to play vocals ...
Shallex found you again
In another 100 Years Metallica will still be the best metal band of all time.
He was one of the very main reasons why I decided to take a bass and learn to play it... he and Steve Harris, actually...
Thanks for mixing and uploading - excellent ... it's hard to appreciate the brilliance and talent of musicians in the final complete arrangement.
the rithm bass is simple, but Cliff's bass is..... Cliff's bass
Sickest picture of Cliff
Everyone has one thing there really good at and cliff broke the mold he was and will for ever be remembered as one of the greats . Legend
nothing against ellefson, i love him too, but cliff was god.

And though you cant hear it, the drums make me want a double bass pedal for my kit
Cliff them all
i think the bass has varying levels of importance, depending on how each band decides to utilize it.
I can't wait to go to heaven to shred with cliff
There was a couple of riffs from ride the lightning that were Dave's, not just the spider chord.
If you listen very closely, you can hear James talking near cliffs pick ups. Also you can hear James playing the guitar too!
Can you give me timestamps if you can (sorry for commenting 4 years later)
Cute 🎸🎶🎶🎶
So why don't u? :) Go for it!
@kmchipower
metallica owns them on all levels. all levels...
i just bought a ruby red rickenbacker 4003 bass, and then realized cliff used to play a red ric. you are missed.

@aassyr1111 the tone is quite nice man... suits the song
@MrBassman1995 You're wrong.
He STILL IS a bass god.
I have been waiting to a "bass and drums only" version of Battery. Think you can do that?
Exactly, though I think it sounds best as done on the record. Less is more and all.

@aassyr1111 Well, I can't compare finger playing and pick playing. The tone is ok for me.
Metallica peaked in 1984-88 and reaped the benefits in 1991-93; the rest doesn't really matter

Why all the backing tracks are with too louder bass? Why not with normal, balanced drum and bass without vocals?
