I suspect that we didn't see many Ambassador classes during TNG because they were still favored for long range missions until the Galaxy class was prevalent in large enough numbers to replace their duties, at which point they started being retired or moved closer to home.
One of the things I love about Trek ships is that everyone says they be tiny compared to other space ships, but when you find out that say, the average Covenant ship generates about 12 terawatts of power and the Warp Core of a Starfleet Galaxy ship generates 12.75 BILLION Gigawatts, you realize that other settings space ships are sort of like 1960’s computers; sure they bigger, but also they’re clunky and inefficient and a Federation vessel manages to be half the size and thousands of times more powerful.

This is a great video tribute to a Federation Starship that sadly had very little appearances on t.v. only being seen a few times on Star Trek TNG and Star Trek DS9 as it was first seen in the TNG episode 'Yesterday's Enterprise' then seen briefly in the 2 part episode 'Redemption' and seen at the beginning of Star Trek DS9 in the first episode 'Emissary part 1' at the battle of Wolf 359 against the Borg Cube.
I'm sure I mentioned this in another comment I made but to refresh everyone's minds on the Ambassador Class I saw a video on it called Star Trek Truth or Myth where it talked about the design history of the Ambassador Class and after the destruction of the Enterprise C it was discovered that the Ambassador Class had several design flaws one of which was it's computer systems which were still using the old Duotronic computer designs which by the time the Ambassador Class came into service was a century out of date and the new Isolinear computer systems were being developed and sadly that was the problem for the class as it's computers were a hybrid of both systems and it was because of that that was the cause of the Enterprise C's destruction because it said in that video I mentioned that the Battle of Nerendra 3 should have been in the favor of the Enterprise and her crew as it said the Ambassador Class U.S.S. Enterprise was not only more maneuverable than the Romulan Warships but it was also more powerful and more technologically advanced so if it hadn't been for that design flaw in it's computers the Enterprise C would have won and survived the Battle of Nerendra 3 and would most likely also would still be considered heroes by the Klingons.
I love these videos! I would equally love seeing videos like this on real life ships like the Nimitz class just as a example of my meaning. His videos are great tech break downs simple to the facts and well described. He has a talent for technical break down which is awesome. I hope he does more videos soon of other ships too like Vulcan ships from enterprise or some of the dominion ships or maybe some about ships from Gundam as a idea
Thanks for the look at another ship called Enterprise she was a corner stone in the Federation connection with a powerful enemy to become a strong ally.
Seems nobody's really done an in-depth analysis on phaser strips. I really liked how the Enterprise could look like it was charging up something powerful.
The Ambassador Class was a very elegant design in my opinion. The blended look of the Galaxy with the more classic look of the Constitution. The Enterprise-C's actions at Narendra III cannot be overstated. If there had not been a Federation-Klingon alliance, the Duras would have won the Klingon civil war and the Alpha Quadrant would have eventually fallen to the Dominion.
The Ambassador-class was the prestige ship of the Federation’s Golden Age. Unfortunately times were so good and the Federation so far ahead of its rivals that there was little need for a Heavy Cruiser. Every exploration or diplomatic role could be handled by smaller or older vessels. Few Ambassadors were ever built and when the Federation finally found itself in need of heavily armed starships the Ambassador was already considered obsolete.
I thought with the ambassador class for most of them at least, that it was the computer that really failed her in the enterprise’s last battle. Since it was a cross between the duotronic and isolinear. Star fleet hid the fact that it wasn’t up to full spec like they said. So if it was up to spec she should’ve been able to hold off and defeat the Romulans
The only time this class was mentioned name was in the TNG Season 1 episode 'Conspiracy' mentioned as the U.S.S. Horatio under the command of Captain Walker Keel who was an old friend of Picard's and the only other ship of the Ambassador Class was the U.S.S. Excalibur that Commander Will Riker commanded during the Starfleet blockade during the Klingon Civil War in the TNG Season 5 episode 'Redemption part 2'.
The Ambassador class to me was always the brute force needed for the unknown. An Angelic Brute! My favorite Federation ship has always been the Excelsior for embracing a larger more robust strong vessel. The Ambassador just improved on that. Then they stepped backwards with the Nebula and Galaxy. Don't get me wrong they're great ships but they looked more designed as what they were, Science/family ship meets exploration. The Ambassador class ships however were manly men ships. Ships of war used in Peace. Strong men and strong women were NEEDED to command and crew these vessels. It wasn't really until the Defiant class that they went to a strong design again. The Akira was supposed to be a beast but came up more of a,, LARGE fighter cruiser instead of a Battleship or heavy Cruiser. The Sovereign seems more based toward the scout/Intrepid class design.. Tough for sure but didn't have the DESIGN of a Heavy Cruiser. After the destruction of so many Starfleet ships in the Borg encounters and Dominion War, you'd think Starfleet would base some Ships of the line off of the Ambassador...
I was never the biggest fan of the Galaxy-class... I thought the Enterprise D should have had more in common with this, with a touch of the Excelsior-class.
I've waited a long time for a full Spacedock breakdown of the Ambassador class starship. Have you ever considered looking at doing breakdown episodes for Star Trek ships that appeared only in video games like Star Trek: Shattered Universe? There's plenty of ships there you can do multiple episodes on.
The Enterprise regardless of era and Captain earnes the respect she so rightly deserves. The Ambassador is one of my favorites of the non-TOS era ships.
Surprised they didn't show this class during the Dominion war. It appeared several times in TNG (not just the Enterprise C) but unlike the other "older" classes like Excelsior and Miranda it never made an appearance on DS9 to my knowledge (outside of maybe the Borg flashback in the pilot).
This was always one of my favourite ships I just really loved how it looked it was just a more well balanced and symmetrical ship. Really wish we had gotten to see more of it on screen than we actually did.
For a supposed work horse of the federation, we sure didn’t see many of them during the TNG or DS:9 series. Instead we saw hundreds of Miranda and Excelsior class ships. It’s like showing the USS Arizona joining a modern Aircraft carrier battle group instead of the USS Wisconsin. Not only does it not fit but it’s skipping over the the Iowa class battleships.
I wonder if anybody during the production of Yesterday's Enterprise happened by the conference room set and happened to notice that the design for the 1701-C on the mural of Enterprises and the one for the episode only looked vaguely similar...
A great ship that thankfully received the treatment it deserved in Star Trek Online (I noticed the choice of BGM, Daniel). Temporal Ambassador is still one of my top 15 favourite episodes of STO to this day....8 years later lol.
I always thought it a shame that you never saw more of this class. An overall very nice design, and a great showcase of the transition to the Galaxy class.
Great video! Love the ambassador class! Didn't the Federation give the design to Bajor at some point? I remember reading somewhere that the Bajorians were pissed they received an old design, but once the ship was built, they realized the ship was fairly up to date and excellent at the mission profiles that Bajor could assign... Maybe this is not canon?
One of DS9 novels. A Bajorian shipyard was commissioned to build an Ambassador class ship. It maturer design that has had all the major kinks worked out of it. IIRC some small civilian shipyards where still producing the Miranda class for non starfleet use.
1:32 "Sluggish at sub-light speeds..."? Huh? Based upon what source? The only canon reference to the Amby's maneuverability is that is _more_ agile than it's Romulan contemporaries. Why do I hear so many Trek fans say it's sluggish? Because the Ent-C didn't instantly reenter the rift in "Yesterday's Enterprise", maybe because both Es stayed well away from the space wedgie of the week?
I realize it was likely mostly due to budgeting, but it always bugged me that in TNG and even more so in DS9 that it seemed the vast majority of Starfleet was pretty much Miranda-class and Excelsior-class with the odd Galaxy and Oberth thrown in here and there. I could be wrong, but I think the only time we see this class at all is in 'Yesterday's Enterprise' Which is weird. The Constitution-class ( original and refit ) lasted 50ish years and then was phased out, but the Miranda and Excelsior were around 100 years later. I always wondered what the in-universe reason for the complete lack of Ambassador-class vessels was. I mean, you'd think by DS9 the backbone of the fleet would be Ambassadors with Excelsiors on the side, instead of Excelsiors with Mirandas.
The Ambassador class did show up a couple of times after Yesterday’s Enterprise. We see one in Data’s Day, and in the pilot of DS9. But I’ve also always wondered why it didn’t show up a bit more often.
The Ambassador model was damaged (last appearing in the pilot of DS9), and there was, for some reason, never a VFX model made for it (initially, the only VFX models were the "new generation" ships featured in First Contact, like the Akira and Steamrunner....along with the Galaxy and Defiant. The Excelsior and Miranda VFX models were made for DS9...after which everything switched over to the ST:Enterprise-era).
Actually we do see another Ambassador-class in the Borg battle of Wolf-359 in the pilot episode of DS9. Its one of the ships that try's to come to the aid of Sisko's ship the USS Saratoga when its being attacked by the Borg.
How would the Dominion War variants of the Ambassador and Excelsior class compare? The Excelsior with upgrades was still a powerhouse [the Lakota went toe to toe with the Defiant, still it had a bunch of completely new upgrades] and was a frontline combat ship almost a century after it was first deployed. Could a Ambassador that had a complete _minor refit_ be as viable?
If anything, it should be more viable. Lakota was one of the later commissioned Excelsior. It was from a time when the Ambassadors were already out. Ambassadors utilize more advanced design and construction and her upgrades her likely higher priority.
Easily my favorite Enterprise Design. I remember as a kid watching the TNG episode and being blown away about how cool it was. Not to mention the awesome story of sacrifice to save another.
@@boobah5643 Well, yeah, that's because Kirk blew up the original. So they had to rename another ship and amend the registry number as those cannot be transferred (and there's probably also an in-universe explanation as to why a flagship Enterprise is always an NCC-1701)
For me it was these episodes about the enterprise c that really cemented TNG as a great series. Very thoughtful story line to complete the picture to the enterprise’s lineage and story.
This was and kinda is my favorite Federation design. Love the shapes, especially the deflector array. Always thought this vessel could have had more screen time, kinda like the excelsior, but I guess it was the models they had at the time.
I was fortunate enough to find a model of this fine ship. I keep it above the head of my bed. To bad we didn't see anymore of that ship outside of that one ep.

One of my favorite starship designs
Love this ship design. Thank You!
My favorite ship in all of Trek. Perfect balance between the best design elements of the TOS and TNG eras.
I like the Ambassador class Starship it's a really nice looking Vessel
One of my favorite Federation ship designs, wish it could get a series of it's own (maybe even built around the E-C). Thanks for doing this one!
I really like this balanced design. I wish we'd seen more of this one.
Thanks for the look at another ship called Enterprise she was a corner stone in the Federation connection with a powerful enemy to become a strong ally.
Seems nobody's really done an in-depth analysis on phaser strips. I really liked how the Enterprise could look like it was charging up something powerful.
Love thus design. One my top 5 Star Trek ships for sure.
I have always loved the way the nacelles are attached on this ship.
Love the star trek online music in the background
Always a joy when I see these vids!
Spacedock, though off topic i was wondering if you'd ever do a video on the Stargate Ha'tak. its a great ship that i think rarely gets talked about.
It is my favorite class of ships in star trek.
Love this! And my wife is a huge fan of the Nebula class Cruiser. Can't wait for that video. 🖖🏼
And, you know, the Enterprise-C from Yesterday’s Enterprise.
Showing the Enterprise entering the time rift was a perfect closing for this clip.
We should have seen the Ambassador-Class where they had the Excelsior show up in TNG-DS9
I still use the Support Cruiser Retrofit when I play the game. I was working on getting the Fleet variant when I stopped playing. Cool ship.
When can we get a look at Jupiter ships from Netflix lost in space?
Such a beautiful ship. Worthy of the name Enterprise
Agreed, that statement stands out as highly inaccurate compared to on screen depictions.
@@darinfoat8410 been awhile since I watched either, thanks for the correction
@@MrGoesBoom The IRL reason was that the model was so damaged that they couldn't really use it.
Always felt like this was a very handsome and executive-looking ship class.
Ambassador Class is one of my top 5 ships.
The Ambassador has to be one of the more under rated starship in Star Trek.
Great video
The ambassador is super, super underrated. Love this ship, and frankly like it more than the galaxy class.
I got to say out of all the starship designs the Ambassador class is my favorite .
Damn shame they didn't feature them more in the television series .
Much better looking then the D or B. My second favorite enterprise after the Enterprise A
@@boobah5643 Well, yeah, that's because Kirk blew up the original. So they had to rename another ship and amend the registry number as those cannot be transferred (and there's probably also an in-universe explanation as to why a flagship Enterprise is always an NCC-1701)
The Ambassador-Class is my favourite "big" ship of Trek, far ahead of the Galaxy- and Sovereign-Classes.
For me it was these episodes about the enterprise c that really cemented TNG as a great series. Very thoughtful story line to complete the picture to the enterprise’s lineage and story.
My favorite Starfleet ship. I wish it'd have gotten more camera time.
We need a series about the Enterprise-C. I’m convinced.
This was and kinda is my favorite Federation design. Love the shapes, especially the deflector array. Always thought this vessel could have had more screen time, kinda like the excelsior, but I guess it was the models they had at the time.
The studio model was destroyed in a fire.
Lest we forget another famous Ambassador class, the Excalibur, of the wonderful New Frontier book series by Peter David.
It's a beautiful design! I would love to see more of the Enterprise C story.
I was fortunate enough to find a model of this fine ship. I keep it above the head of my bed. To bad we didn't see anymore of that ship outside of that one ep.
I love the Ambassador-class.
As far as I know, the design of the Ambasador-Class was one of the earliest concept designs of the Galaxy-Class for STNG. I always loved this design, although it was bit too compact...
beautiful ship
I like how it looks like a combination of the Galaxy and Excelsior class ships, with some Constitution class thrown in too.
