Failed Landing + Go-Around | Extreme Bouncing

  • One of the most dramatic failed landings I've seen! Van's RV-9A C-GVXG is seen approaching and performing a very bumpy landing attempt before going around and slowly climbing out.
The porpoising was interesting to see, and the slow climb looked slightly concerning with the aircrafts height compared to surrounding buildings and trees.

So true, it looked like it was going to be a nice landing from the first touch of the runway. I guess there was a little bit too much speed and some gusty conditions.

We all make mistakes when we are learning to fly and when you’re a pilot you’re always learning. That’s the great thing about it. This pilot tried to land with too much energy…best to fly down the runway until speed slows rather than forcing the plane down. If you’re halfway down the runway and have not slowed enough to flair, just go around. In fact, practice go arounds when you don’t really need to, so you’re comfortable doing them.

Should have added power at the top of the 2nd or 3rd bounce to cushion the drop to the runway instead of waiting until it was on the ground. Was likely carrying extra speed on the approach because of the gusty wind, but too much speed isn't your friend on landing.

Wow - interesting. He didn't get any flaps down until about 5 seconds before touchdown. Maybe he needed to set up for final much earlier and get correct attitude and approach speed settled in sooner? He also put the flaps up again very soon after lift off. The extra lift generated by the flaps would probably have been useful for the upwind leg. That sink after takeoff didn't look good.

This aircraft operator is contracted by many Canadian general aviation aerodrome owners to assist with the compounding of runway material. If the filming had continued you might have seen him come in for more rolling runs later on.
The concrete surface at this particular aerodrome had been reported as being annoyingly uneven, and it needed to be flattened out a little.

The go-around should have been initiated after the first bounce based on RV's reputation. Don't under stand why after power was applied, he still let the nose drop. The pilot allowed the nose to drop, and proceded to over control. My instructor would say. Good thing we are not landing 182. After allowing the nose wheel drop to soon and hard, putting unneeded stress on the plane. Keep the nose up. Live and learn. If things are not looking good go around. Earlier the better.

If you study the approach, he seems to take forever to reach the runway. The camera never lies, but it can stretch the truth sometimes... that runway is ridiculous. they need to level it out and resurface. that same bump/jump is seen in all of your other videos as well. most of the heavier certified planes make it over ok but in this case it's a tricky combination of a very light airplane, very springy underdamped landing gear, and a headwind. the bump/jump lifts the plane up after a decent touchdown, the springy underdamped landing gear bounces it up again after touching down a second and a third time, and the headwind component created enough lift to catch the wing and lift it higher still. looking up the specs on this plane, it can take off and land in as little as 300ft. good decision to power up and get the heck out of there. pilot made a good initial landing in a strong crosswind. the climb out was also affected by the strong wind and this small very light plane was fighting with it the whole way. the question here is, was he trying to land in windy conditions that exceeded the spec of the airplane?
