  • Not hard to do! Just pliers and a small nail and hammer, and you are good to go! The leather treadle belts are found online and are very affordable. As a bonus, you will also see how to thread the Singer 15 machine and bobbin in this video.

    I bought a 66 last weekend. I remember my granny sewing with one, but I never did. I was trying it out at home and realized the bobbin winder would not let the wheel turn after I replaced the little tire. I decided to take off the winder and just leave it off. However when I took the winder off I realized something wasn’t right with the belt. The person who replaced it put the belt over the wheel not on the groove for the belt. I watched your video and was able to fix it. I had to cut off almost an inch and use a nail and needle to make the hole. Thank you so much. The bobbin winder is frozen but that’s for another day.

      Hi...love my treadle. Just got it back from being serviced. Like you said, on a surface like a scrap of wood, tightly tape down the end of the belt that you will be making the hole. And again tightly tape a few inches away from where your going to put your hole for the staple, with correct orientation to the other end of the belt so the ends will meet. Now the belt will remain in correct position to make the hole for the staple.

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  2 роки тому

      Yes, you need to release the belt before storing. That will make the belt last longer.😉 If you are going to use the machine on a regular basis, it's always good to give it a dose of oil at least once a week. If you will be using it less frequently, then just give it some oil before you start a new project. Have fun! Thanks for watching.❤

      I don't think it's ever possible to put the belt on too tight. When you don't have a release, you just have to work it over and off the big wheel on the bottom first. Good luck!

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Jessica, No specific instructions, but in general, you will want to get all the old oil and built up "gunk" out of the machine as a first step. I use 100% pure kerosene to do this. It dissolves any oil and goo, then evaporates. I squirt it into hard to reach places using a syringe, and where the build up needs some scrubbing, I use a set of little wire cleaning brushes for pipe cleaning. When everything is squeaky clean I drop some new Singer sewing machine oil on all the moving joints. Dont ever use grease! She should run smooth and quiet after that. When it comes to parts (you may need an upper tension spring) I look online. Make sure you mention the exact model and you will probably find something on Ebay. Hope that helps!

  • @daphneblake7889
    @daphneblake7889 Рік тому

    I just put on a new belt on my mother's old singer 66.
    I pulled it tight and slippage at the handwheel is still a problem.
    The belt seams to have a tanned slick brown appearance.
    There is not a lot of resistance in the mechanism the machine moves freely

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  Рік тому

      You might try roughing up that slickness with some sand paper. Also make sure that the channel the belt goes in on the machine is totally clean of any oil or cleaning supply residue. If someone dusted or cleaned the machine using Endust or Pledge, that could cause slipping in the channel. Did you trim the end of the new belt off to the right length first? All treadle are a bit different, and the belts come standard - too long on purpose. So after you put the belt around both wheels on the machine, pull it as tight as you can, maybe even stretching it a bit. Mark how much you need to cut off of one end in order to make the two ends of the belt meet up perfectly. Then when you punch your hole in the belt to insert the staple, you will notice that there will be a tiny gap between the two ends of the belt when you stretch it back on the machine. That's means its stretched perfectly tight enough.😉

    I have one like yours but the spring on the tension is different than you said yours would be. I also had a screw missing from the bobbin case and can't find a replacement. Do you have a source for parts? Mine was a mess when I got it but for free it was worth it. I got it clean and it runs wonderfully. I need a bobbin winder rubber but haven't been able to find one.

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  4 роки тому

      I find most of my parts on Ebay. Just Google search for the model number of your machine and any parts that are available will come up. You can also search for a specific part like "Bobbin Winder Tire Singer 15" and see what you find. I've gotten great service from SewingPartsOnline.com
      There were many different model 15 machines over the years and they changed little things on each one. One of them was the tension spring. It saw many changes. ;) My machine is from 1919 and the actual model number is Singer 15-11. I know the model Singer 15-88 has reverse stitch option, and the 15-91 later on has a potted motor that operates the machine with a direct gear drive. Singer produced the machine for over 100 years! (starting in 1895) Good luck with your part search!

    Hi! My sewing machine does not have any tension discs just a large spring about 2 inches long is it supposed to be like that or does it need the discs? I have the same exact machine as in this video. Also, the presser foot won't budge the lever just slips and doesn't lift the foot how would I got about fixing that? Thank you so much for the video by the way, it's incredibly helpful!!! 😊

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  3 роки тому +2

      It sounds like your machine needs a complete cleaning. If it's been sitting for many years, it gets gummed up with dust sticking in the machine oil. Makes all the parts get sticky and sometime stuck completely. I use pure kerosene to clean the old sticky oil off all the moving parts that I can see. It helps to use a dropper or a syringe to squeeze the kerosene all over the inside parts. You can access the inside of the machine by taking off the plate on the end of the machine. Once you have squirted everything with kerosene and used a Qtip to clean all the old oil off, squeeze some new sewing machine oil in all the spots that have moving joints, and move the presser foot lever up and down, add more oil where you see the parts moving. Also crank the hand wheel a few times every time you add oil. As for the tension discs, yes, you need those discs. The spring all by itself will not be enough friction on the thread to give you a good stitch. You may want to find a "tension disc assembly" for your machine online. I find a lot of my parts on ebay. Hope this helps!

    • @TheMasquerade

      They come in a standard 72" size, then you have to cut it to fit. The video will show you how. I have heard of people using just a pair of panty hose that they stretch around the belt area and tie in place - and that can work in a pinch. Leave both legs attached, but cut the top part of the panty off.😉

      Sounds like it needs a good cleaning. I use a syringe with kerosene to get into all the hard to reach places to loosen up all the old gummed up oil. Hi Donna, I have a daughter(14yrs) who is passionate about everything antique - she has her heart set on purchasing a treadle sewing machine e but has a limited budget - I was wondering if you could give her some tips about what to look out for when purchasing? The machine she is considering does not have a belt so we can’t test if the machine itself is working….. many many thanks for any advice!! Kind regards

    • @TheMasquerade
      @TheMasquerade  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Del, How fun that your daughter is excited about antiques! You will want to make sure the machine she purchases has both the bobbin shuttle and a bobbin or two. As you can see in this video, the belt is an easy fix. It will also benefit her to know that the machine is not seized. If she can hand turn the wheel on the side, and everything moves freely, then that's most of the battle already taken care of! Turning the wheel up and over the top and toward yourself should make the needle bar move up and down, and make the feed dogs pull the fabric from front to back. If you have the opportunity to thread the machine before purchase, you can test the machine even without a belt by hand cranking it to make it go through the motions to create a stitch. To test the treadle, place your feet on the treadle peddle and make sure the fly wheel spins freely when you rock your feet pushing the peddle in a heel to toe motion. This will insure that it is not frozen and that the pitman arm is still in working order. Other than that, if everything is moving and it is making a stitch - then all she will have to worry about is cleaning up all the old gunk on and around the moving parts and giving it a nice clean sewing machine oil. (I use 100% pure kerosene to do the cleaning with Q-tips and small wire pipe cleaning brushes) I hope she finds a great machine! Good luck!

    At the risk of sounding like a prick , use a vice next time to hold the end that's the second or the third hand you are looking for.... LOL. I find devices like the vice a lot easier to pinch the very end of the belt . and then you can push your pin through and then after you've made the whole , take it out of the vise and voila ....(make it just a little bit longer then you need) so the part you had squished in the vice can be cut off...... And thank you for showing me how to thread the thread through the machine now my brain can rest lol....
