I doubt you can get away with using Houdini assets alone. Only the plugins are free you still need to install the full Houdini software! Since indie differs from commercial licensing this announcement is probably assuming you already own a commercial license of Houdini, $1950? Nothing has changed on the indie front. WHAT DO I NEED TO GET THE HOUDINI ENGINE PLUG-INS WORKING? The Houdini Engine plug-ins get installed into Unity projects via a package and directly into the UE4 GUI. You also need to install the complete Houdini software [18.5.499+] which will be called upon “under-the-hood” when the plug-in is processing assets. And then you need your licenses loaded into the license manager to make them available.
@@tomoprime217 Yea Tomo, its amazing how many people, dare I say 98%, have no idea what the announcement even means. They're all like yay!! but it doesnt even apply to them I'd wager :)
This is not a free version of the Houdini Engine, you can't create anything with this plugin. It's essentially just an asset importer and parameter editor that still requires a commercial Houdini license in order to create assets.
For those new to Houdini like me, the platform is like this - 'Houdini Engine' is the runtime for executing content created in the 'Houdini Editor' - which is just referred to as 'Houdini'. The 'Houdini Editor' has a free option, which is called 'Houdini Apprentice' which has severe limitations - no exporting models - content created in 'Apprentice' will run on 'Houdini Engine' - and you can't even take something designed in 'Apprentice' and import it into the paid version of the editor so you can do these things. The 'Houdini Engine' can be had for free - this is the 'Houdini Engine Indie' license - but keep in mind - unless you have a license for the 'Houdini Editor Indie' (just called 'Houdini Indie') - you are not going to be able to author content to run on the engine. What can you do for free? You can find content that was already created by someone else and run it on the engine. There is some of this available on sidefx's site, free to download. You can play with the 'starter kit' which is specially designed for integration with Unity or Unreal. Here you can 'tweak' this premade content in a few ways - change the procedural algorithm to scatter features of a model, generate a level skeleton - have them reconfigure in-editor and be 'baked out' to be used in the build. What can you not do? You can't create your own content to be run on the engine - you'd need 'Houdini Indie' for that which is $269 a year. Probably not what you had in mind when you saw 'free' in the title here. However, if you are actually considering developing a commercial title at a small game dev shop with multiple employees, the 'Houdini Indie' license is compelling - you can create procedurally created content for *level designers who work only with the 'Houdini Engine'* via these plugins. Those level designers workstations use the free 'Houdini Engine' license. You're not getting away from the $269 license if you intend to use the 'Houdini Editor' because of the limitations on 'Apprentice'. Just wanted to give a rundown to hopefully save others time/confusion about licensing in case they're assuming the whole platform is at their disposal for free now - it's not!
To create own procedural stuff you must buy Houdini Indie for 269$ per year, Houdini Engine can only use files created in Houdini Indie (or Pro) inside Unity or Unreal. So its not that expensive with income under 100k $ but not free
If you buy it on Steam it costs 229$ for 12 month and 355$ for 24 months. So 19$ per month for 12 or 14$ per month for 24 months. This is one of the cheapest offers for an 3D Suite out there. Maya LT, for example, costs 28$ per month and has even not an itegrated renderer.
They best way to think about Houdini is that you are writing recipes(using nodes) instead of actually cooking. The recipe can be changed at anytime, and the result will be different.

@@irql2 No, having stuff free in a closed ecosystem like Unity is harmful. I bet Houdini are using a lot of open source libraries under the hood but they don't contribute to open source as much as they should have, which is disappointing, so they rather give Unity special treatment while charging "not only big studios", but also small individuals who maybe can't afford software and choose to go with open source, those people are pretty much forced to use Unity.
They should support open source game engines like Godot and allow use of the Houdini Engine from within an open source game engine, but they're just helping Unity and UE to monopolize the market.
We've all been jebaited, "Houdini Engine" isn't free for Unreal/Unity users, the "Houdini for Unreal/Unity" plugin is free. Still costs $269 (every year) to be able to make something in Houdini and export it, you just don't have to pay anything EXTRA to put it in unreal/unity.

@@lennysmileyface thought it worked with Houdini apprentice. Oh well, still a better investment for a procedural generation option in the long run since on it's own it's not limited to one specific type of asset at a time, so my first comment still stands.
Hasn't this been the case for at least a good couple of years now? I could swear I've seen this being free for some time now, I've even seen ppl sharing their Houdini engine plugins on gumroad etc, for UE4, Unity.
With the free Houdini Engine for Unreal I was not even able to work with a sample HDA file downloaded from their website, because the session between Unreal and Houdini kept disconnecting. It turned out you need to have a paid Houdini version in order to keep the session open in Unreal.
Wait im still confused. If i want to make effects i would still need to get the actual license right? So what this is a way to preview content in hudini only?
If you want to make effects, yes you'll need a license, either indie or full depending on your needs. This is just for running houdini digital assets (also known as OTLs) in Unreal/Unity. So say someone creates a pipe making tool for unreal/unity in Houdini proper, that creates pipes procedurally based on curves. You can just load up that asset now using one of these free-licenses and make pipes in unreal/unity. This enables more technical artists to create tools and assets that now unreal/unity users can use.
@@kennyfxtd You can't load up that asset and make pipes yourself- you'd need Houdini for that as it uses it as a headless backend for the actual rebuilding of assets. Without Houdini all the Houdini Engine gives is the ability to load a scene using the pipe tool that someone else has built- once you try to add or edit a pipe it calls out to Houdini to build the mesh and you need a license. Have a look at www.sidefx.com/forum/topic/50639/ - A SideFX staffer says "A license is not needed for building the plugin, and is only needed to instantiate new HDAs, cook them (change parameters etc…). A team member who doesn't have a license will still be able to open levels with placed HDAs, but not use them."
@@normal_vector right, as the faq says though. You do need Houdini engine and the licence. In this case the new Unreal/Unity license. The process is download Houdini/Houdini Engine. Normally to use Houdini to make an asset you'd need a full/indie license. So now the asset is made, and now your team can use up to 10 (or however many they announced) free engine licenses just for unreal/unity. These licenses allow you to run Houdini Engine in unreal/unity to "cook" those assets and change parameters and what not.
Looks like comments like this are removed. Dare to sat Unity and Unreal are big bag of awful? Do not even like Godot or flax. Yet they are at least grate software.
as i said before, you need 1 year nodelocked license to use Houdini engine (starting from 269/year upwards). I doubt whoever is interested in godot or flax would put houdini in their pipeline.
@@UltimatePerfection Unreal is free until you start making some real money. I'm not sure about Unity's license, but I did use it for free before I found out Godot is much better for 2d games
I believe Ubisoft used Houdini for Far Cry 5. I would love to learn Houdini Engine tp make procedural buildings (and pretty much procedural everything), but I find it is really hard to learn. a couple of basic templates would be nice so that you could start and learn.
So in other words you need houdini to even use houdini engine. And Houdini is a digital content creation tool, that uses nodes to create content (3d models and what have you) procedurally? So what do I care if it's free for?
damn you speak fast, can't tell if it's due to me not sleeping all night, but it was the first time I put a video on 0.75x ahah, but then realized that I can't listen to those audio artifacts and put it back on 1x
First Blender & Davinci Resolve Express, UNREAL Engine and now Houdini, jings who's next Maya, Cinema 4d and 3ds Max??? Although new cgi creator's should be warned that Houdini isn't easy to get to grips with aswell as the strains on gpu processes over fps aswell as running and rendering times that should not be underestimated!
All this means is companies can now save 10 licenses worth of Houdini Engine. Houdini Indie was already free for Indie Users, and it already provided a free license of Houdini Engine for Indies... That is some fun clickbait, I am surprised you have so few dislikes.
Can these plugins be used to create and modify nodes in game engines, or can they only be imported into Unreal and Unity, created only through a commercial version of Houdini?
"Hey, our importer now FREE!!!". Looks like joke. Just imagine paid importer for Substance, FBX, glTF, PSD, Alembic, etc... Thx SideFX, but I'm still using Sceelix.
So I can technically get the exporter for free and still have to pay as an indie or an artist? well that's exactly what I want, who would need the core of the houdini to create your own procedural assets anyways? I mean other companies such as autodesk and what not are forcing us to pay shit ton of money for their exporters. Thanks for revolutionising the entire industry side fx! lmfao.
So this is just a plug-in or is it Houdini itself? I'm confused.. because if Houdini itself isn't free this is kinda useless tbh if you can't use the actual software then you can't edit or create anything your just able to import pre created examples into engine?
I don't think they will ever do it for godot, even if I hope so. Usually when a thing like this happens is because there is some sort of agreement between companies. But hope will never die! xD
Have used Houdini on and off for a few years. Looks to me that you still need a payed version to create HDA's. Not much of a change to developers. The problem I have with Houdini is I lose all my HDA's if I stop paying.
Unfortunately is not really really free. You still have to own at least one Houdini Indie licence in order to use it along with Houdini Engine. So I don't see the point in having Houdini Engine free if I can't use it. LE: Actually it turns out you can use it free. You just can't edit the digital asset or create new ones.

You're right, this is HUGE!!!
A huge disappointment that they rather support Unity and UE4 users than open source community.
@@theohallenius8882 1. It's better than nothing
2. You are absolutely right, support for open source community would be truly huge
@@theohallenius8882 I'd argue this current "everything free" mentality we have right now is more harmful to the industry than anything. Especially folks in the business of creating content such as training.
All of Sidefx labs is open source. They do contribute.
*cries in Godot*
It can help soo much specially for indie game devs
Useful for marketplace assets and for studios that need access to assets without paying for extra seats. This should have been the default ages ago.
this is great news... I wish I had learned houdini during quarantine
I remember trying to learn Houdini 15 years ago?
Looks like this might open up a lot of opportunities in the marketplaces. It'll be cool to see what comes from this.
Blender 9.2 just got released and then this, wonder if SideFX felt they need to make some news them selfs on same day :D
2.92 you mean?
They should support open source game engines like Godot and allow use of the Houdini Engine from within an open source game engine, but they're just helping Unity and UE to monopolize the market.
Sharing this news on my LinkedIn for sure!
"They're above my favorite Chipotle" 😂😂
My first reaction was “wait, there’s a Chipotle in Toronto?”
a bunch of unity asset/tool creators that do (or at least try to do) things similar to what houdini engine does just got shot through the heart.
No they didn't because you still need to pay for the procedural creation application to create things.
@@lennysmileyface
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ eh, free for non commercial use. One can simply use'em to get a quick prototype together for a game jam, simplistic free game or quick scenery for an animation project. So still some potential profit loss for em.
Maybe down the line when Blender's Geometry nodes mature, a dev with some skill could probably make a similar plugin to bridge it and Unreal since it's source available.
@@Rez996 You can't create anything with the plugin. You still need to buy Houdini.
Was free for only Apprentice, Education & Indie. Now for Artists and Studios as well.
@@zinetx Hah! Yeah that might've been the case! Thanks for clarifying!
@@kennyfxtd oh I see thanks for explaining
@@normal_vector the Houdini engine for unreal/unity plugin will cover that for you?
@@normal_vector right, as the faq says though. You do need Houdini engine and the licence. In this case the new Unreal/Unity license.
The process is download Houdini/Houdini Engine. Normally to use Houdini to make an asset you'd need a full/indie license. So now the asset is made, and now your team can use up to 10 (or however many they announced) free engine licenses just for unreal/unity. These licenses allow you to run Houdini Engine in unreal/unity to "cook" those assets and change parameters and what not.
This guy is omnipresent...
take a shot every time he says "consume houdini content"
Correct- you still need Houdini Core/FX to "author" the effects but Houdini Engine let's you "play" these exported assets in the editor if that helps.
I wish it was available for more engines like Godot or Flax. Neither Unity or Unreal are very interesting to me now.
@@RiccardoBocci Maybe they aren't interested in Unity/Unreal because they want to be able to afford Houdini?
@@UltimatePerfection Unreal is free until you start making some real money. I'm not sure about Unity's license, but I did use it for free before I found out Godot is much better for 2d games
@@gernottiefenbrunner172 Unreal is a resource hog that is incredibly hard to use though and Unity sucks in general.
Wow Geoff Ramsey is branching out.
OMG! I'm SUBSCRIBING NOW!
Houdini here I come!
Next day: Epic acquires Houdini
Wasn't this always free for Indies- this is only now free for commercial licence holders.
Yea its kind of a big nothing burger for Indie / Apprentice users. Which is probably the vast majority of people in th comments lol.
I'm gonna wait for GODOT & blender to fork the crap out of them
you gonna be waiting a while.. houdini is a 30 year old piece of software.
@@irql2 Well then I'll be using Libre assets then
I believe Ubisoft used Houdini for Far Cry 5. I would love to learn Houdini Engine tp make procedural buildings (and pretty much procedural everything), but I find it is really hard to learn. a couple of basic templates would be nice so that you could start and learn.
No way!!! This did not just happen! 😱

Houdini is around 30+ years.
Your channel is so informative thanks alot ❤️
keeping those algorithms happy..
Not sure if i'm happy or sad about that lol (wanted to learn houdini, but spent few years studying another pipeline because i couldn't afford houdini)
Thanks for make this video ;)
Still don't know what is it capable of :D give me some example
So in other words you need houdini to even use houdini engine. And Houdini is a digital content creation tool, that uses nodes to create content (3d models and what have you) procedurally? So what do I care if it's free for?
damn you speak fast, can't tell if it's due to me not sleeping all night, but it was the first time I put a video on 0.75x ahah, but then realized that I can't listen to those audio artifacts and put it back on 1x
This is really awsome, its time to learnan new things.
I am not sure if I understand...
But for create content inf Houdini I will have to pay?
At least until Epic buys them then it becomes exclusive to Unreal.
That would be great, and offers it for free to use inside Unreal. xD
They would have to be wanting to be bought. It doesn't happen just by waving cash around.
Most of the products Epic buys make it available to non Unreal users as well.
Houdini have Houdoneit!
OH HELL YEAH!!!!
I’ve spent two years heavily in Houdini. And can do quite a bit. Still... I absolutely hate the software
Charging for both the dev tools AND the runtime??
Kinda reminds me of Oracle licensing.
oh miracle of miracles!
nevermind... I just saw the licensing details. It's a spider web.
Houdini VFX can be also exported to OpenVDB and imported to Blender
So clickbait title. You got me 😏
"Hey, our importer now FREE!!!". Looks like joke. Just imagine paid importer for Substance, FBX, glTF, PSD, Alembic, etc...
Thx SideFX, but I'm still using Sceelix.
Plugin was always free - available in C4D, Unity and Unreal, the engine wasn't... until now!
I was like whats Sceelix? Then I googled it and watched some youtube videos. So disappointing. Oh well.

So I can technically get the exporter for free and still have to pay as an indie or an artist? well that's exactly what I want, who would need the core of the houdini to create your own procedural assets anyways?
I mean other companies such as autodesk and what not are forcing us to pay shit ton of money for their exporters. Thanks for revolutionising the entire industry side fx! lmfao.
Yeah this really is a nothing burger announcement, moving along.
Curious question. Is Unreal Engine is free or is there a subscription base ?
Life is getting good 😎
So this is just a plug-in or is it Houdini itself? I'm confused.. because if Houdini itself isn't free this is kinda useless tbh if you can't use the actual software then you can't edit or create anything your just able to import pre created examples into engine?
I’m sure this is Thanks to Blender 😂👏👏👏
I was going to say something witty, but now that I'm typing it's escaped me.
Thx for info ...
What about Godot?
I don't think they will ever do it for godot, even if I hope so. Usually when a thing like this happens is because there is some sort of agreement between companies.
But hope will never die! xD
i want to learn it, if not only for the simulations. doesn't it do simulations better and faster than almost any other software?
It does simulations THE BEST on the market as far as I know
Have used Houdini on and off for a few years. Looks to me that you still need a payed version to create HDA's. Not much of a change to developers. The problem I have with Houdini is I lose all my HDA's if I stop paying.
Wait, what, why? I can see how you couldn't edit them anymore, but why would you lose them?
Why would you lose them? Just do a backup
@@pizola3285 its that without a licence I cannot change the HDA's
@@gamefromscratch if I cannot edit a HDA it's as good as lost. It's like not being able to edit my code
Well, I was tinkering with Godot. I guess I will be sticking with Unreal.
I wish I could use blenders shader nodes in UE4 :(
Thanks for the share. It's a great app however I confuse how to download as payment required. Is it really free or not ?
It is fully free. You do not need to pay anything.
Whoooaaa... Houdini is Canadian??
Unreal! (Forgive the pun)
what a new pun you came up with, never seen it before.
"...are baked out before going to runtime"
is Houdini software free too or just engine? i think the engine was already free
seems free version of Houdini wont work with the free engine licenses

YES
Unfortunately is not really really free. You still have to own at least one Houdini Indie licence in order to use it along with Houdini Engine. So I don't see the point in having Houdini Engine free if I can't use it.
LE: Actually it turns out you can use it free. You just can't edit the digital asset or create new ones.
With Metahuman and this, Unreal is gonna outweigh Blender soon probably
I doubt that, honestly.
