Excellent video! 6 years a go I saw this video to see how shift this transmission... today I have my own car carrier thanks to this video... thanks very much.
@jaylu88 It is RECOMMENDED that you double clutch whenever you move the gear select to the next gear. (eg from 2nd HI to 3rd LOW.) This allows you use the accelerator to bring the rpms to the manufacturer's recommended shift range. (Depends on the make of rig you have) When you split a gear, you flip the splitter switch on the gear select, then break torque by letting off the accelerator, then reapply the accelerator. The transmission shifts automatically doing this.(eg 3rd LOW to 3rd HI)
Love the video! Just makes me wonder why everyone seems to hate my love for the Renault B18 range-change/splitter box. Admitted, it won't split without clutch, but if you don't need to split, everything's OK. And if you need a split, you can touch the clutch, just remember the gear you split whichever way you move the box to. Oh, the endless stories I could tell about the sweetie..!
@BlkM84 That is correct in most cases. Some transmissions have a double overdrive where the last gear in the main box is overdrive, and on the splitter the back position is direct and the forward position is overdrive. So top gear with splitter up is double overdrive.
By far the most accurate video on to shift through 18 gears and all the ppl that say you don't use a clutch just dry shift it that's how you eventually wreck the box
It's the best video on Y-T by far. What you did was outstanding about showing the reverse and the technical and regular way of putting it as 1 through 18 or the low and high. Phenomenal. Now, if you could make one on how to shift down, and one for 21,15,13,10. Thank you for everything
@brossmart Flip the switch, THEN release accelerator, (you can now single clutch half way) or re-apply the accelerator and it should shift for ya. When you are moving the stick, you can double clutch it (half clutch out of gear, half back into the next one). When shifting down on a splitter, release accelerator, flip the switch, move the shifter to the next lower gear, then match the RPMs and it should drop right in! Remember to slow with your brakes enough before trying to shift down.
No you don't have to split every gear, depends on the load, however you can save fuel by splitting every gear and shifting at a lower RPM until you get into the higher gears.
Very nice video. Watching this actually ended all of my confusion concerning the "splitter" and the range buttons... Thanks for posting. You made some really smooth shifts. Awesome.
para cambiar de corta/low (L) a larga/hoigh (H) es necesario pisar el embrague de los camiones o solo hay que pulsar el selector to change the selector from L to H is necessary to depress the clutch trucks or just need to give the button? muchas gracias por el video es muy bueno/ thanks for the video it's more it's very good
I drove a 1998 Mack (I'm just guessing on the year), with an 18spd and I loved it. I could shift it much faster than this driver is doing and never miss a gear. I used to haul logs and bulk milk and it worked great for either job.
@StraightSuccess This not my video, but this is how I did it. I drove semi's for 12 years. When downshifting I still "floated the gears". It gets tricky. the trick is to blip the throttle to get it out of gear, then rev the engine to the proper RPM and then slip it into gear. When going from 4th high to 5th low you do not have to use clutch. I have limited space here, so if u have any more ?'s feel free to ask. Hope this helps.
Felicitaciones. CONGRATULATION MISTERS.
+Chris Lee I made it to 0:10 and I was already done. How can I learn from somebody who can't even spell "reverse?" I didn't even watch the rest of the video.
great video.. Do you have to spit every gear?? We also got 18 speed in the MAN and Mercedes Trucks but most the time you can shift the hole gear till 6 and then when your loaded your split gear..
Good comment because knowing what speed you were at when you UPSHIFT into any gear is a good clue that you should get to that same speed to DOWNSHIFT in as well.
this guy is going through every gear splitting all of them. it also depends on your loads. if you are heavy hauling then you would split the low side as well as the top side. if just regular easy loads that you are under 80,000 gvw then like i said split your top side only
if you realy want to get technical, its not Low & High on the split, its Direct & Overdrive. Low is the bottom range in the box & High is the top range!
I am looking at a truck to buy right now that has a 18spd in it. I really really don't need that many running gears and stops and starts a lot . Would it be hard on the tranny to run the 18spd through the low gears only through all except last gear or last couple gears or reverse it and split a few of the low gears. making it a 10-13 speed in shifting? The truck has 60s 500detroit in it with 3.55 rears.
@StraightSuccess Nope....it called "floating" or "speed-shifting" Learn it and it'll cause less driver fatigue! Find out where your shift point (What RPM to shift up/down from) is......move the shifter from the slot it;s in....move it to the slot ya want and when the RPM level is right....it should slip right in if it's on the right slot. Might take a little practice at first. Once ya get it....you'll never clutch again!
Most people have no clue how busy a truckers shifting arm is. Bad enough holding hands with a girl with a 4spd. It would be helpful if there was an small corner of the screen showing what the speedometer was doing at the same time.
Hi everybody, at first I am not a Trucker, but I am very interested in the technology of trucks and other heavy equiptment. I have a question, do you have to use the clutch when using the splitter, or is it enough to take the foot off the accelerator? Sorry for my bad englisch, greetings from Austria
it`s simple! Find out some truck`s operation manual and read. For Freightliner Cascadia is one of the best op.manual. imho.THERE you find 10-13-18 variants and automatic . Each of them have a little difference and common safety rules for shifting . I`ts best for you to read by your own! Also pre-trip inspection,air-brakes adjust ,5 wheel operation and much more interesting things you find there.

Thats the way you do it man it's clear and understandable...... But tell me if your pulling up from a stop sign in low or the first ,second gear should you use the clutch for your all low ranger gears or what man the problem is we do'nt see how your using the clutch that if your using one
Hoenstly...my problem is getting the right gear when slowing down/downshifting. What's the best way to rev match the gears in order to avoid grinding them? Is it just a practice thing? I'm a tech so I'm always road testing different trucks. From 8 speeds up to 18 speeds.
You just gotta get a feel for the truck..... And hear... Shit, I even float the gears in my 2500 dodge Turbo deisle... U just gotta practice...... And like I said, try ND feel ND b one with the truck.... Then when u get good enough, and your in a big bad bitch witch 10in stacks and wants wanna make that bitch roar, you'll learn how to drive with the Jake brake engaged that whole time whether floating up shifting, or down.... It just practice.... Just like with everything in life.... If u need more advice, let me know...
Each motor and transmission is different... Not matter what kind of vehicle your in.... You just gotta get a feel for that bitch and understand how it works.... Shit, even when I use to drive e double sticks, that was hard.... But you learn. That's what's it's all about.
SPLITTER SELECTOR MAY BE SHIFTED IN 5-6-7-8 ONLY DO NOT RANGE SHIFT WITH SPLITTER SELECTOR IN H (MOVE RANGE SELECTOR BEFORE MOVING SHIFT LEVER) START WITH RANGE SELECTOR DOWN SHIFT LO-1-2-3-4 RAISE RANGE SELECTOR SHIFT 5-6-7-8 SHIFT 8-7-6-5- MOVE RANGE SELECTOR DOWN SHIFT 4-3-2-1-LO......thats it is the rigth way
I finally got to understand how to shift through the gears of a "range-split manual" tranny in a mechanical horse by watching this video after having watched countless others...
Do you disengage the clutch when you shift from high to low? Also, when going from 4th high to 5th low, does the clutch have to be engaged when you flip the switch?
Andres Prieto you just need to let off the throttle when you split the gears. I haul gravel in mich and i have an 18 eaton with a 550 cat and almost 475 000 on the original clutch and transmission and only use the clutch starting and stopping
FINALLY! A proper video of shifting an 18 speed! Thank you
Gino Byers ABSOLUTELY!!! My EXACT sentiments!😃😎
Hands Down The Best Instructional video for a rookie wanting to see the proper way to drive the 18 speed. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.....
Excellent video! 6 years a go I saw this video to see how shift this transmission... today I have my own car carrier thanks to this video... thanks very much.
by far, the best demonstration of shifting pattern I saw on youtube. thank dude!! :-)

tnx. the best video about 18spd out there! everyone else are trying to make rocket science out of it.
damn straight I also drove truck to 8 speed though
Thats pussy. Take ur gay air shifting else where. U physically shift a 10 speed more starting in first.
Thank you sir, this has got to be the most helpful instructional video on the Internet for shifting an 18 speed, thank you again.
@BlkM84 That is correct in most cases. Some transmissions have a double overdrive where the last gear in the main box is overdrive, and on the splitter the back position is direct and the forward position is overdrive. So top gear with splitter up is double overdrive.
just starting back into trucking again, this video was excellent.

You dont need clutch with fuller

Helps me a lot about the splitter thank you for this video. All the way from Fiji Island ✌️✌️
Awesome video this help me a lot with my driving career as a dump truck driver
One of the best shifting videos, I have seen on youtube.
Thanks

FACT OF THE CENTURY: THIS IS THE VERY BEST NO NONSENSE 18 SPEED SHIFTING VIDEO ON THE PLANET... WELL DONE!!!
This man is the FN MAN!!!!!THX SO MUCH DUDE. I HAVE A RD TEST TMRW NEVER DRIVEN AN 18SPD. WISH ME LUCK. THX AGAIN FOR YOUR HELP.

that was the best shifting video i have seen yet
The best video tutorial I've seen thus far. Thank you!!

The best video of 18 speed transmision
Best instruction on youtube so far!
+Chris Lee I made it to 0:10 and I was already done. How can I learn from somebody who can't even spell "reverse?" I didn't even watch the rest of the video.
+MetallicaPlaya24 Well,ur right but he can't spell doesn't mean he can't drive
+Chris Lee ....Agreed =D
Palanca de cambios,selectora de alta y baja(blanca)y la multiplicadora(gris)
Amazing this is the best video so far that I've watched for this.
Great video very simple for anyone to understand how the split works
Yup, that's how it's done. these transmissions are smooth.
great video..
Do you have to spit every gear??
We also got 18 speed in the MAN and Mercedes Trucks but most the time you can shift the hole gear till 6 and then when your loaded your split gear..
Very great video. Simple and illustrated
mejor video que eh visto hasta ahora ...gracias ..
Now!!!!!!! that's how you really supose to drive and 18
Thank you so much what I have been looking for!
@aid2003 if you count every single gear its a 20 speed
Very nice! Smooth, precise and done properly!
preselecting direct when upshifting is wrong. so is preselecting OD when down shifting. according to the manufacturer.
I agree on being the best, straight forward all the others had me scratching my head, since I haven't shifted anything over a 10 spd.
Good comment because knowing what speed you were at when you UPSHIFT into any gear is a good clue that you should get to that same speed to DOWNSHIFT in as well.
Thank you. I appreciate your video, it was a good refresher for me. Keep your bottom side down and the upside, up.
this guy is going through every gear splitting all of them. it also depends on your loads. if you are heavy hauling then you would split the low side as well as the top side. if just regular easy loads that you are under 80,000 gvw then like i said split your top side only
@jaylu88 if your just splitting the gears you can just let off the throttle to break tourqe
if you realy want to get technical, its not Low & High on the split, its Direct & Overdrive.
Low is the bottom range in the box & High is the top range!
Nice shifting and splitting gears video.
best damn video on shifting an 18 speed bravo
I am looking at a truck to buy right now that has a 18spd in it. I really really don't need that many running gears and stops and starts a lot .

This is the pro💪👍😎 no talking straight up very well done sir!👍
That's lots of gears. Do you have to use splitter on normal weights or only when extremely heavy?
Nice video congratulations
Tks buddy best I seen yet on YT
Very nicely done....were you floatin them all. By watching his legs, i think he was
Yes sir! That's the easiest way to do it... No need to put more work on yourself.
@101HeyNow That means that they actually have the clutch on the stick shift but electronically activated clutch?
I've never driven an 18....but I understand now. u got a low high in the lower 4 gears. Hell...simple enough. I'm sure i could drive it.
Great video..
I am happy to handle 12 gears but 18.. WOW..
THX 4 Share..
Informative and to the point, thank you!
When you splitt the gears (low high) you don't use the clutch, you simply release the acceleator and it switches range right ??
I want to change this exact transmission to automatic.... how would i do that ?
Most people have no clue how busy a truckers shifting arm is. Bad enough holding hands with a girl with a 4spd.

nice video the explanation was excellent'm starting to handle that kind of cash fuller and was a great help thanks
@4NZZZ454CATEngine well there are some guys that reckon you can use the LO pos in high range as well and therefore make it a 20 speed
Thats the way you do it man it's clear and understandable...... But tell me if your pulling up from a stop sign in low or the first ,second gear should you use the clutch for your all low ranger gears or what man the problem is we do'nt see how your using the clutch that if your using one
If you know how to float, there's no need for the clutch.... Only when taking off from a start.... I even do it in my Turbo Diesel dodge pickup.

Exelente video!
nice job on your video BTW... and one Hell of a Clean Cab... Kudos...
Good job. Well done. Good shifting!
It looks difficult, but it´s easy to do!In practice are not all the gears in use.Me myself got 16,but use mostly 10 or 11 only

gracias por la buena explicacion asi aprendemos rápido
excellent video really helped me a lot thanx
I finally got to understand how to shift through the gears of a "range-split manual" tranny in a mechanical horse by watching this video after having watched countless others...
brilliant video man...now i know for sure how to shift an 18 speed..nice!!
Best videos out there
What kind of truck is it?
I am wondering you count the LOW and Reverse gear to..
Here in Europe we would say its and 16 Speed..
nice and simple video thank you
when does one use a splitter?
nice... what truck?
Do you disengage the clutch when you shift from high to low? Also, when going from 4th high to 5th low, does the clutch have to be engaged when you flip the switch?
you have to press the cluch when you shift with the split,,or just release the gas pedal ?,,,

GREAT,,thank's man,,,,drive safety,,,,,,
Great video , easily shown . Thnx
even though the first stick position is labled as low it is first gear
your video is the best now give us one of you down shifting
answered alot of my questions. dont say it just do it thanks from a newly aquired cdl owner.
GREAT TUTORIAL OR TRAINING, THANK YOU.
Lol I actually saw your video then went to work the next day and figured it out lol thanks 👍
does it work with double clutch??
Excelente video ilustrativo, felicitaciones ...
