As a non-truck driver...ever.....never even been in a rig, I watched this cause I saw a 2024 KW W900L Limited Edition, thought it was beautiful. Anyway this vid popped up after some UA-cam searches. Now I'm sure from the comments you're teaching right but I have to say....I would F that up 6 ways from Sunday 😂😂😂😂😂 GREAT VID I REALLY ENJOYED IT!!!
This actually helped a lot man. I've had 4 years experience on 10 speeds but never anything higher. I asked my coworker for pointers and got the typical answer....you'll figure it out. My brain only works that way after I've seen it in motion.
Yo, you did your thing right here man. Heavy hauling and you in NYC (my hometown) with an 18-speed. I salute you my G. I learned how to drive in a 10-speed International, but over the past 4 years since I got my CDL every company I've worked for has automatics. I have what many call an automatic handicap smh. Lost out on a lot of jobs in the oilfield because of that.
Exactly the instructional video I was looking for. Learned to drive a 9 speed a year ago and been driving automatics since but needed to learn an 18. This really gave me a great understanding of how to shift. Thanks for making it.
Hell ya brother, great explanation of how the 18 speed works. I wish I found this 2 months ago . I've been running 18 speed now for a month by trial and error. This with help sharpen my skills. Thanks.🔥🙏
My work truck is a 21’ kenworth t880, before this it was an 07’ w900L, and before that, it was a 21’ freightliner 114sd, all 18 speeds at all different power outputs. 470 for the freightliner, 510 for the t880 and 600 in the w9 all rocking the 18 speeds. I haul rock at my max gross of 46,500kgs/102,300Lbs multiple times a day. Every trucks setup requires different driving styles. I can only take off in low-low or low-hi in the t880, but can walk from a dead stop in 2nd the 114. The w9 will do 2nd. I never do this and always leave in either low-low or low-hi anyways, but unless I’m in the muck or in a turned position, I am able to comfortably pick whole gears until 6 hole and split 6L to 6H except for in the 114. It is almost necessary to split from 4L to 4H. Really comes down to clutch and power setup. Good video man
I can remember 30 years ago we use to use a 8 speed with deep reduction for heavy haul which was a heavy tranny for heavy Bush haul b train or 5 axle straight trailer for logs but when 18 came it was a nice tranny we had them in heavy spec Western Star which are were best Bush haul truck 550 cat 4 wheel lock good in Bush then hwy to mills but the old 8 speed was also good tough Eaton transmission
Well done sir. I learned a lot. I'm not a driver but I'm here because I want to learn 18-speed shifting in American Truck Sim. So, if your hauling heavy cargo, you want to split all 9 gears? And if you're empty, you can just do 1-8 without splitting? Is that right?
Great video king! what's the rpm jump on shifts/downshifts on one of these 200rpm? Iv'e only ever driven a miata manual, this is a whole other ball game
If you ignore low and the splits, an 18 speed is x2 4 speeds (low range and high) in a standard H pattern. When you add the splits each gear becomes 2. Seat time and you'll get it 👍👍
Thanks for your expertise in showing us how to change the gears Jeff. ''You were really easy to follow. You are a great driver Jeff Jele one of the best lucky you bro...
Hey this is great! Fascinating. I knew about the range selector but had no idea about the hi/low splitter. But I’ve never even been in a truck so I’m just curious. Maybe a stupid question, but since it wasn’t covered in your otherwise thorough video: those trucks have a clutch like a manual transmission car, correct? I’m assuming you’re pressing the clutch to shift between each gear, just not the hi/low split? Thanks!
@@Jeff_Jefe I’m serious bro I just brought this 18 speed PETERBILT 379 and to be honest you just taught me how to shift it and understand it. So I appreciate you and you have just gained a new subscriber
Could you do a video concentrating on down shift instead of up shift? Can the splitter be in 5Hi and go to 4Hi after dropping the range selector?? Also can you skip the splitter all together till you get to 8th and just use it as an overdrive? Is that bad for the tranny? Awesome video by the way!!
Great over all video it's just I'm a little dyslexic when it comes to shifting gears because I haven't done it in a while I use to know how u to double clutch and float but it's been almost 6 years since I did it fam
What's the reason you run through low and high split in every single gear? Is your truck down on power? I'm in a T880 18 speed and my normal gross is 140,000lbs (super B's). When fully loaded its lo low, 1 low, 2 low, 3 low, 4 low, 5 low, 5 high, 6 low, 6 high etc I only split high range. I'd never make most left hand filter turns if I went through the entire low range box like that as I'd have changed gear 9 times before I even hit 24kph.
So i drove a ten speed and a 9 i see that the pattern is the same as a 9 speed just splitting the lows and highs my question is do you have to keep using the gear splitter goin down or can you just put it down and shift down that way
I drive a fuel truck and drive around to sandy/muddy job sites and the amount of sand and mud i sweep out of my cab every day is ridiculous. I searched around and found some videos of the product and easy installation. Would have never know the cab seat air guns even existed if it wasn’t for me finding your UA-cam Channel and watching all your videos yesterday.

I also pre select.. however it is right as I want the selection... not 10 seconds before

What rear ends do you have? That truck is long legged.
3.90
You only need the splits for going uphill or when u r on logging roads. On a flat road, You can jump over the splits. it doesn't make difference.
When you put switch back into low before up shifting it won’t down downshift ?
No it will not downshift as long as u keep your foot on throttle. Once you let go then it will shift
Excellent explanation! Thanks
Np thanks for watching
Question: when you downshift with your spiltter, i.e 5H to 5L, do you apply gas to rev match or it automatically does that?
Yes rev
Question high gear switch at 4th to 5th instead 5th to 6th in ten speed ???
Yes 4-5
Nice explanation
At around what rpms are you shifting when loaded ? Having trouble shifting
anywhere from 1300-1500 rpm on the low range gears (1-4) then 1500-1600 on the high range gears (4-8) all depends
Would be nice to see your rpm !
dude is this a road ranger box?
My man explained it well.

I’m just showing how to. Doesn’t mean I do it like that
How do you know what speed or whatever to shift at?
I go by the sound but you can go by the revs 12-1500 rpm
Thank you so much sir!!
Np
So i drove a ten speed and a 9 i see that the pattern is the same as a 9 speed just splitting the lows and highs my question is do you have to keep using the gear splitter goin down or can you just put it down and shift down that way
