Why is Casper the alligator you swim with???

  • Casper is not the only gator that I swim with! Let’s take a walk down memory lane and talk about how my tours were when they first started, and we had 15 alligators in here at once! And about how I dive with wild alligators, and crocodiles around the world! I know I sound a little defensive in this video, sorry guys, but this is one of the most common critiques people have on my work and it really makes me crazy 😂. Remember, you can come do a tour with me and Casper! If you want to come join you can book online now, go to www.crocodilechris.com Let me know if you want to go! Observation and photos only at @evergladesoutpost and tour participants are separated from gators by safety fence. Remember all the gators you see me working with are rescue nuisance gators, caught from the wild as big as you see them now! The state kills 7k-8k each year. We volunteer our time to catch & rescue them and bring them to sanctuaries, unpaid. Wetsuit by @cressi1946

To slightly counter your argument, you actually might be overlooking a third option hinted at in your Disney analogy:
If you have fixed days/months where specific gators 'headline' the encounter, then people will come back so as to encounter each separate gator. They will also be inclined to compare the gators they encounter, either across multiple visits, or with the ones that their friends had; which will only further entrench their loyalty to a specific gator or two.
This is what people do for Disney Princesses. They will actually return to see more than one princess, and compare experiences, or even go so far as to see the SAME princess but in an alternate outfit (Winter/Summer/Holiday/etc).
Now, to go FULL Disney on you: this will also be a good opportunity to sell merchandising.
Say, each gator has a shirt (just one example of merch, it can also be figures/jewelry/phone cases and so on), and each shirt has a distinct design (Capser is covered in leaves, Darth had a light saber, Snoopy eating a yellow bird), well not only are guests going to want to buy 'one' funny shirt, they're going to want to buy a shirt for mom (who's favorite is Snoopy), Dad (Who likes Darth), and little Tammy (Who thinks Casper is the cutest).
    Just food for thought.

I'm assuming that Casper has a more relaxed temperament than some of your other gators, which makes it easier to do tours.
Do you have a bond with Casper that's more unique or trusting than other gators? Is he your favorite? If that's how you would describe it. Just curious as you didn't address, at least in this video, if you felt you had a different type of bond with him.
You can definitely see the comfort level between you both. I think channels like this are invaluable, when it comes to educating the public about animals that most of us have been taught to be afraid of.

    • @OrphanMartian
      @OrphanMartian 11 місяців тому +2

@@LeadMe2TheBliss I don't think it's just intimidation, since Casper is so comfortable around Chris. Maybe initially it was like that, but through training they've gained a form of mutual respect. Casper knows that he gets food if he behaves, and also that Chris is not a threat. It's basically the same type of respect a croc would give a plover bird that cleans its teeth lol.
Of course, the moment Chris becomes a threat or stops being useful, Casper would definitely eat him. They both know it too lol, that's where the respect comes from.

Alligator wrestling. Man, that's something I've not thought of in ages! I've got a photo from when I was a kid that I'm assuming FWC would flip out entirely about now. A friend's family took me to Sunken Gardens (I think) with them and we watched the Kachunga and the alligator show. I got selected as the audience member as a little kid (elementary school) to be the one that got a photo taken sitting on it. Everyone who sees it says it looks like a jailhouse photo because I was wearing a horizontal black/white striped shirt and as a kid I had so little reason to smile that I basically couldn't, so while I SWEAR I was, I still look like I'm grimacing 😂 Shame it's been so long because all I really remember of it was him having his gator on the sand/"beach" area and telling all us FL kids+the few tourists to remember that if we saw an alligator in our yard and got scared, all we had to do was "this!" before grabbing his tail and dragging him to the "neighbour's yard". Not anything I'd try, but the little things stick out, eh?
As for the tours without grating, I mean, you cooouulllld break their rules, right up until a FWC person came in undercover and got the "privileged" treatment. I agree completely with you that it's totally not worth it to risk the life of the animals there just so someone can feel special. Also, I've seen videos with other alligators in the pond, so I'm not sure why people ask that? I mean, all they have to do is go through your history and they'll see that it's wrong.

Amazing video! It's so great that you share your love for water and, of course, Casper. Keep going with these great videos, especially because water activities are the best. If it doesn't bother you, I'd like to give you a suggestion, a tip for the next videos: Basically, you could try inserting some comic and funny stuff... to give everyone a pinch of humor that, in the world of water activities, can never be missing. Now, I don't think much of it, but the first thing I could think of in your sport might be peeing in the water. Once, my uncle, who is a scuba diver, peed in his wetsuit during a long diving session and that moment was absolutely funny, he even wrote "I’m peeing" on a waterproof notebook during the session. He has always been telling me that there are 2 types of divers and swimmers: those who pee in the water and those who lie. I know it may sound strange as a request but, in my opinion, these are moments of happiness and carefree that always make everyone smile. I hope you like the idea and I hope you have a wonderful day!

    Chris
You should promote other gators too.
I want to go to your tour, hope next year i can schedule.
In the mean time until i schedule etc, if something happen to casper, it would be cool to know other options you have, and see them here on your videos.
It’s only me and my thinking.
Superb work and channel, entertaining and informative 🧠🔝
    Footage is 👌

Hey Chris. Love watching all your channels. UA-cam, Instagram, Facebook, etc. Question: Are all gators trainable? You say that each gator is different and, while they’re NEVER “tamed” they are trainable through all the work you put in. But are there any gators you’ve acquired that just WILL NOT be trained; that no matter how much time and effort you put in, they are ‘untrainable?’ Thanks for all you do. So educational AND entertaining. I swear I'm going to make it out your way to do a tour sooner rather than later.

I love your videos.. have such respect for you and gabby and the work you do….best of luck with your new home and I think the tourists will love the fence and being able to be even closer to Casper…. Casper is definitely a rock star… do you have a gator or croc named Elvis? Just a suggestion :)

@@GatorChris_ you’re welcome anytime…. I admire how composed you are in such a dangerous profession….and it’s quite fascinating how you have picked up that kind of instinct when animals behavior changes… remarkable to say the least :)

Given your experience with crocodilians (and Casper in particular), what are your thoughts on whether they have "minds" in the kind of sense that we associate minds with humans, other apes, dogs, and corvids? Do you get a sense of "Casper" being inside that skull or just a sophisticated, non-sentient biocomputer running the show?

I always think about Seven when Chris mentions he could do the tour with just about any alligator. I’d love to see seven in one of these videos.
