  • I recorded this quick demo of the features of the Westone Pantera X390 for the Westone Forum. I've had this Pantera from now (1986) and it's still one of the most versatile and cool sounding guitars I own.

Thank you for this video. Through some unknown circumstance one of the Caspian Blue models ended up in my small middle of nowhere steel mill coal mining Ohio town when I was 13. Around 1986, like yours. I loved it immediately but the original list price was $1,200 in this particular shopping mall music store. Way out of my 13-year-old budget even though I had summer jobs. But as fate would have it everyone else in my area seemed to want Ibanez and Gibson and Charvel guitars. It stayed on the shelf long enough that the store eventually marked it down to about half that list price. As you have probably guessed by now I bought it. I still have it although I admit I don't play guitar that often these days. In recent years I read about how rare these guitars were and as a result I don't think I'll ever be able to part with it. I'm hoping my kids get interested in guitar and if so it will be a nice family heirloom to pass on to one of them. LOL all these years I've had it but it did not come with any sort of an instruction book. I never realized that the leftmost tone pot did phase reversal. I always thought that each tone pot split one or the other humbucker. So thank you for the education and I share your love for this gorgeous guitar. (Mine is named Johara, which means "jewel" in Arabic.)

Thanks for the message Jeff, My story is similar to your. I was actually going to buy a Brian May Guild but it was too much of a wait and the price on this was dropped to the point where I could afford it (one of my students bought the other Caspian Blue model that was in the shop). I could never sell mine either :-) Ron

Wait! Where in Ohio did you get it? I got mine from Centerville Music. I got a good deal because I played a very short time with the owner and his wife. Oh and (LOL!) I had that thing for two and a half years before realizing it had coil taps! I accidentally pulled it out while trying to turn the knob! Lol!!

I owned Spectrum Series II (79'). It was the most comfortable neck I have ever played. Just perfect.

Love mine too! Got it used in 89 (the blue one). Yours sounds really good. Unfortunately (fortunately?) when I got it it had a DiMarzio Rick Derringer in the bridge. Hearing yours I wish the previous owner had left in the stock. Also I'm not convinced after thehearing yours that mine was wired properly. Thing is I've gotten too used to it to track down a stock (and rewire!). Thanks for posting this rare gem of a guitar!

My buddy had one that was IDENTICAL to this one. I reconnected with him recently and was absolutely heartbroken to find out that he had sold it at a pawn shop for like $200. I seriously felt like crying. 😔

I had one identical to this, even had the chip in the paintwork! Sold it for £120 to pay an electric bill. So sad.. :(

Would you happen to know where I could get my hands on one of these? I'm a big fan of Trevor Rabin and I'd love to get one for some studio stuff. It has a super unique sound

They come up for sale very very rarely. You might have better luck looking for an X300 or X350 in the meantime?

Amazing axe. I hate to be that guy, but you can't coil "tap" a humbucker. You are coil "splitting". The "Mighty Gibson" still claims their American Standard LP has "coil tapping". What a company.
