In the US supplements aren't really regulated that goes for all supplements including b12, d3, and omega 3 all of which Dr Gregor advocates. All they have to do is slap a label that their claims haven't been approved by the FDA. Now if they are selling a product that doesn't have what they claim then they can face legal ramifications. Many companies have good scientific backings while others will sell you snake oil. He is just saying be careful as a consumer and try to eat your nutrients and supplement as little as possible. I don't think their is an issue with b12 if that is what you are asking because its easily synthesized by bacteria in labs and has been for a while now so I don't think you need to worry too much.
i think vitamins are so cheap, that there is not much scamming going in there. the more exotic and expensive supplements are the once that have more scammery going on. one thing i would be really cautious, are omega3 supplements. polyunsaturated fats will go bad really fast, so i think most fish oil & algae oil caps are probably gone bad already. i would always ask for manufacture date, i think algae omega3 supplements have a shelf life of 2months. that is pretty short time to put it in caps, and get it sold.
Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong, supplements have been regulated by the FDA for decades, but not to the extent of drugs. The most likely way people could get away with false products is if the suppliers of raw material are knowingly passing false products onto the supplement companies with a phoney certificate of authenticity. However that is only possible for inactive ingredients, active ingredients require testing to identify the component.
Just because a supplement is expensive doesn't mean it's safe and effective. Look for GMP or USP on the label, that means they were tested for purity and potency. Consumerlab.com is also a good resource.
NutritionFacts.org/Dr.Greger what supplement company or companys would you recommend for my vitamin B-12 as will as my vitamin D-3 supplement.Oh keep in mind I have to take Methylcobalamin not Cyanocobalamin because I have had kidney stones in the past and my kidney can't process the Cyanide through my kidneys very well.
I'm sure if you contact the company they can give you the names of the companies that have independently tested their products or even better the published research on the purity and quality of their products.
Pretty horrifying. There are only a few companies with very high quality control, internal testing, and third party testing. And this is no different from the restaurant industry in which most companies will try to cheat you with shit ingredients every chance they get.
I know the point is to eat the actual fruit or vegetables, but can you let us know the two supplements providers that were legit anyways? I haven't seen fresh St. John's Wort in a store.
this is so fucked up.. now i am trying to think about any herbal supplements i have taken recently, the only thing i can think of is milk thistle (i like booze)... guess ill never kno if it was real or not.. but seriously who would buy raspberry powder and why?? if they aint in season, then eat whats in season..
I take Milk thistle too to help from all those years of alcohol. When I buy supplements, I use 2 extensions that show if the reviews are fake or not. Then I find the genuine highest rated one and buy from there. Can't go wrong like that.
If people are finding what you say they are finding Doctor, they should tell the FDA, and they can launch investigations into this, and recall products. The laws are already on the books, its just a matter of testing products (which was already done apparently) and then prosecuting perpetrators.
LMAO! Amazing how the these supplement manufacturers get away with phony photos, ingredients etc. There has got to be someway to hold them accountable for misleading (lying)to the consumer.
The third party tester, let´s face it... is it Consumer lab? Do you think Consumer lab is all clear about their tests or could be that some privileges are given to those who may pay more, or something? I´m not doubting, I´m just asking, really. Love your channel.
You can though, at least with the B12. There are foods that have added B12 like plant milk, some cereal, tempeh, and mock meats. Because they are food and not supplements, they undergo a much more rigorous testing and approval process by the FDA. As for vitamin D, just go outside! 5-10 minutes of sunlight on your skin daily should be plenty to fulfill your daily requirements.
Many people cannot properly absorb the B12 in fortified foods, for instance Vegan Gains had to take B12 injection because he could not absorb the B12 in the fortified foods he ate. For vitamin D, going outside simply doesn't work especially for those living in the northern hemisphere where the sun shines from such an angle, no matter how long you sanbath naked, you ain't gonna make any vitamin D whatsoever. Other than that, our ancestors where running around naked in the savannah in the sunshine, where as we wear clothes all the time. My point is that we live in an unnatural world, which means that there are essential vitamins and minerals that we cannot get naturally from food, which we have to supplement. And not all supplements brand are all bad as Michael Greger makes it to be in this video, the hard thing is just the find the right brands...
Could you provide some sources for people at higher latitudes being unable to make enough vitamin D even with adequate sunlight exposure time/surface area?
Don't touch supplements. got it. I gotta get vitamin D and iodine so hopefully the vitamins D supplements at Walmart from natures valley is ok and the iodine in big salt is ok too! Something's gotta give! oh and methyl b12 vitamin supplement in the "healthy" isle in Kroger is another I take. It has a yellow label on it. Hopefully I'm safe!
All these can be gotten from food though. They put B12 in fortified foods like plant milk, tempeh, some tofu, nutritional yeast and some mock meats. Your body makes vitamin D when your skin is exposed to sunlight, and your body can convert ALA which can be found in foods like walnuts and flax into DHA. The longer you go without consuming any straight DHA from sources like fish, the better that conversion becomes. It is also worth noting that a diet high in oil (often omega 6 fats) will make the conversion of ALA to DHA worse so cutting down as much oil in your diet as possible is definitely a good idea.
Tell that to the people in the Northern hemisphere, where they cant make vitamin D most of the year. So you either eat organs of fish or you supplement.
It all depends supplements are time saver is your busy like me! Plus supplements brought from PipingRock.com can be cheaper and pure just like food but in different ways!
what oil are you using that's that high in omega 6s lol always supplementing with plant-based omega 3s is great. dunno what you're talking about! plus what's the conversion rate when you factor zinc oxide 12% sunscreen? the planet is becoming much and the atmosphere has been badly damaged already. what's it supposed to block? harmful radiation. i'm not going to burn or develop skin cancer on the basis that there's a possible silver lining at the end of it all that's hardly even noticeable
they should put out the names of the 2/44 companies that had exactly what they said on their products with no contamination and no fillers
Agree!
Yep that is a great idea. I'm keen to know what brands I can trust outside of big broccoli and corrupt cauliflower and corporate carrot.
Any word on which brands are more reliable than others?
what about b-12 supplements are they not regulated too?
I think unless it's listed as medicine, it is not regulated.

what about herbal teas? they come in these fancy packaging nowadays. although based on taste they taste good..
What about Solgar and other higher quality brands?
They're in a glass bottle therefore, they're better! I'm a Solgar user because of their long-standing reputation. But I really wonder!
I guess you can't really trust any brand fully nor can you trust anyone fully on youtube either.
Blaq Shiep Oh really?
Just because a supplement is expensive doesn't mean it's safe and effective. Look for GMP or USP on the label, that means they were tested for purity and potency. Consumerlab.com is also a good resource.
Wow, you really can't trust companies these days. How sad and frustrating.
You can trust certain companies, while certain other companies you can't trust.
Piping Rock is good company and supplements are pure what I tested!
Thank you for this valuable information.

Great to know !!!
I have relative faith in Mega Food, Deva and Solgar. Anyone know if they've been independently tested?
Would like to know too - I take MegaFood Vegan B12, D3 and Probitiotic.
I'm sure if you contact the company they can give you the names of the companies that have independently tested their products or even better the published research on the purity and quality of their products.
Someone should file lawsuits against these companies who aren't selling what they promise. That's called fraud!
You only need to supplement with B12, Vitamin D and maybe DHA+EPA Omega 3 if you dont eat fish. The rest you should get from food.
Please start leaving cited sources on your video descriptions on here too!
Those are some scary facts! Why is the supplement market not regulated? What can we do to change this?
Pretty horrifying. There are only a few companies with very high quality control, internal testing, and third party testing.
And this is no different from the restaurant industry in which most companies will try to cheat you with shit ingredients every chance they get.
PipingRock.com could be one of those companies too!
so what about B12 pills? As a vegan this is vital is it not?
Awesome and informative video :)
Are supplements regulated in Europe, Japan, etc? If so, perhaps that would indicate which brands are trustworthy.
so what are the good/safe/true brands?
fUP420babe the actual foods apparently
I like that expiration ACTUALL FOOD...
Whoah that's shocking!!! Although I'm not sure why I'm surprised!
Purely Vic spoilers: you're not
I know the point is to eat the actual fruit or vegetables, but can you let us know the two supplements providers that were legit anyways? I haven't seen fresh St. John's Wort in a store.
You shouldn't be taking St John's Wort, it's not good for you. It can also interfere with medications.
this is so fucked up.. now i am trying to think about any herbal supplements i have taken recently, the only thing i can think of is milk thistle (i like booze)... guess ill never kno if it was real or not.. but seriously who would buy raspberry powder and why?? if they aint in season, then eat whats in season..

wow! thanks
Pure Health. Busted.
So from what I got from this, buy herbs in plant and leaf forms. Also to eat you fruit not take pills. Thanks!
well something to think about next time I plan on adding anything to my supplements.
Good to be informed about deception!!!!
Who were the 2 companies that actually had products having the actual ingredients in their products?
I read the study and unfortunately, they do not disclose the names of the companies they used :(
That's called a Perpetration with hold! Bummer!! I guess I have to figure a way to grow my own plants!
Rock on, Doc!
How about black raspberry jam?
I have the right to know the companies name!! Give us a list Please
Then what about b12 and d1&d2? What do vegans do?
D3 is sunlight during the summer in the middle of the day without any sunscreen on. B12 is propably best to supplement with once in a while.
Cat N. Sorry I meant D1 and D2, I'll edit it now.
What is D1 and D2?? D2 is the synthetic form of D3, hardly something to strive for ;)
If people are finding what you say they are finding Doctor, they should tell the FDA, and they can launch investigations into this, and recall products. The laws are already on the books, its just a matter of testing products (which was already done apparently) and then prosecuting perpetrators.
Just a crazy thought, but you could eat the actual berries.
how about gojinberrys universal brand
Wow. That was a shocker.
So there is some value in taking a course to be a modern shaman, so one can herbs oneself...
this is insane!!
THANKSGIVING
Busted
That figures. Hmmm
0 dislikes?? I must be dreaming.
amen
depressing to hear this ...
Wait, but how is this legal?!
LMAO! Amazing how the these supplement manufacturers get away with phony photos, ingredients etc. There has got to be someway to hold them accountable for misleading (lying)to the consumer.
Try PipingRock.com there good honest company from what I tested!
