  • Create some beautiful dragonflies with iridescent wings in this easy to follow step by step tutorial. I should just mention that in the UK we also call 'Wheat' ears 'Corn' ears ;) just to avoid any confusion :)
This is suitable for complete beginners upwards and makes a head turning pendant. So, sit back and relax as you watch the process unfold, then have some fun and make one of your own.
The Dragonfly Template is downloadable from my Website here, scroll down to the bottom of the page to find it - www.fionaabel-smith.co.uk/yout... and is free for you to use - but please do not copy/sell/teach using the template without my express permission.
You can also follow the general website link below, go to The UA-cam videos page, and scroll down from there.

The Stencil set is No 006 and is from Polymer Clay UK and is available from their website here - www.pcuktools.com/stencilsa5 or their Etsy shop here - www.etsy.com/uk/market/pcuk_t...
I use iridescent mica powders - these are widely available from well stocked craft shops or online. You can use unwanted shimmery eye makeup powders instead.
I have used a pinch bail at the top of the pendant, again these are widely available from bead shops or online.
I use a Lucy Clay Czextruder to extrude the thin lines of clay - other makes are available, and the Makins brand is also a good one - but if you want to extrude a lot of polymer clay, then I can recommend this brand, although it is more expensive. You can of course always roll the stalks by hand for this project. At the moment I can only see them available to buy through Amazon, but that will probably be temporary.
I use FIMO Gloss varnish, this is the water soluble one, and gives a nice soft sheen to the wings. It is available from most stores/online shops that sell FIMO polymer clay. Other brands of polymer clay varnish are available.
The Blanda stainless steel bowls are available from Ikea, in a slightly larger size at the moment - www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/pro... , but you can use any suitable bowl, or the back of a spoon, a semi sphere mould etc., as long as your mould is oven safe, and will release the clay after baking.
For those rolling the clay by hand - setting 9 on my machine is 1 card thick, setting 3 is 5 cards, setting 2 is 6 cards and setting 1 is 7 cards thick.
If you like my work, then please do have a look at my website, www.fionaabel-smith.co.uk/ and follow me on Facebook / fiona.abelsmith and Instagram. / fionaabelsmith.artist
I also have a number of Polymer Clay Tutorials to buy, both in my Etsy shop, PolyOriginals - www.etsy.com/uk/shop/PolyOrig... where I have more tutorials in a PDF format, and as a video tutorial here - polyoriginals.thinkific.com/co...
The music from the video is English Country Garden by Aaron Kenny and is available from the UA-cam Free Audio Library.
Thank you so much for watching.

Thank you for this lovely tutorial! The Navajo peoples feel that the dragonfly represents water, ie: if a dragonfly is near, so is fresh water. Can't wait to make this with a stream as a background! Like another commenter, I may have to wait for cooler weather...the monsoons are coming soon, though!

Hi Fiona,,, love these pendents,, I was lucky enough to have a dragonfly land on the tip of my finger a few years ago on a real hot summers day after the dew,, there were two flying around,, a metallic blue and a metallic green it was the green one that landed on my finger just sitting looking right at me!!! till he flew away, about a week after a gold one was on a rose Bush and it looked like it had diamonds all over it from the dew that hot morning, soon as I went to approach it flew away, once in a lifetime experience that I'll never forget. It was amazing and wonderful. And these pendents really hit the spot for me. They are so very beautiful ,,and you always make beautiful things.

One question: After using the mica powders, do they have to go under the UV light? Or only after resin? TIA❤😊❤

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  Рік тому +1

I am so glad you enjoy them, thank you very much 🙂 No, Mica powder does not need UV light, it sticks to the clay, but can rub off a little, hence using varnish just to finish sealing it. Of course, you could instead add a coat of UV resin on the wings, cure that with a UV light and that would give a lovely effect. But it is the resin that needs the UV light, not the mica powder. have fun 🙂
