@@TheAtkey I love this comment. The annoying thing about not liking Discovery is you tend to be put with the people who don't like it because of it having a black lead.
My question about this scene is: How did Riker know a simple nod from Picard meant "Confine them in a force field"? Why didn't it mean "Beam them off the ship", or "Stun them with phasers", or "Beam them to the Brig"?
They were not an active threat, so phasers were not it, and Picard seemed to want to continue to talk with them, so leaving the bridge wasn’t it either
Next Gen was the best. Imagine if this was Star Trek Discovery? The crew would be yelling insults at each other and then they would have started an intergalactic war with these aliens. And Tilly would have yelled "ScIeNcE iS aWsOmE yOu FuCkErS!!!1!1"
This goes back to Encounter at Farpoint, Troi said she taught Riker telepathy but it seemed he was rusty. It can be assumed she continued to now that they are reunited... off screen.
We have all learned, that there are many ways to communicate. Verbal and non-verbal. In TNG there are many hints, that they have several communication-codes. like eye-blinking, sings with hands and so on. All commanding officers have to know them 100%.
They can also utilize text codes via their consoles. We have already kind of well developed non-verbal means of communication over a thousands years of communications development.
Sadly If I were part of the bridge crew of the Enterprise-D I wouldn't know what Picard's plan would be because it's next to impossible for me to read non-verbal cues.
The only non verbal cue was to Riker. Everything else was likely his plan, communicated from the commanders console to tactical and ops. Riker and Picard have served together for a short period, but Riker was an excellent fit to Picard’s command style.

*Problem:* You think he was saying that it is WRONG to imprison people under any circumstances. That is not what he said. He said imprisonment is an injury. In the clip above, the aliens took someone without consent or cause from that person, held them against their will, and altered their entire lives. While the aliens did not physically *harm* Picard at all, the injury was to his mental state. It was unjustified given that he had broken no law, and committed no wrong. If Picard was arguing that imprisonment *in all situations* was an injury, and thereby morally wrong, then his imprisonment of the two aliens would thereby also making him guilty of a crime. But it wasn't, was it? It was *justified*. They broke human laws, or at least violated a person's rights, and needed to be taught why humans and the Federation thought that was wrong. *Solution:* Numerous times through-out the series Picard was in favor of lethal force, and imprisonment. Imprisonment *can indeed* be an injury. However it must be understood that some injuries against a person might be necessary for punishment, reform, and justice. You cannot murder someone, or cause someone to die from neglect, then tell the judge he is immoral for putting you in prison. That isn't how the concept of justice works. That isn't how a rational person would view the circumstance.

You should get to know Wil Wheaton. He’s a great guy, and he doesn’t deserve the vitriol people toss his way for this character
Wesley was the Jar Jar of Next Gen
Angry Picard is best Picard
Even this clip was better than the entire first season of discovery.
@Manek Iridius You probably love the new Star wars movies too...
@Manek Iridius It doesn't suck because it's different it suck because it sucks. Deep Space 9 was different and it was awesome.
@@TheAtkey This.
@Manek Iridius It sucks because it completely abandons the core tenets of what made Star Trek great and castrated the philosophical hallmarks that made it retain its relevance and popularity for over 50 years. People are still referencing TOS, TNG and DS9 as touchstones in moral, ethical and philosophical debate whereas Discovery will likely be forgotten and rarely mentioned the same as Enterprise and, to a lesser degree, Voyager.
@@TheAtkey I love this comment. The annoying thing about not liking Discovery is you tend to be put with the people who don't like it because of it having a black lead.
that was his coolest "engage" ever
My question about this scene is: How did Riker know a simple nod from Picard meant "Confine them in a force field"? Why didn't it mean "Beam them off the ship", or "Stun them with phasers", or "Beam them to the Brig"?
They learned Klingon ocular language.
They were not an active threat, so phasers were not it, and Picard seemed to want to continue to talk with them, so leaving the bridge wasn’t it either
I understood it as, "stab dis foo."
Any of them would have worked just as well. The nod just meant do something that will teach these fools a lesson.
its a tv programme
Just wait until Picard gets the bar tab (I know, I know, they don't have money) ;-)
Which makes buying a round of drinks for everyone kind of a meaningless gesture. They were free anyway.
STD is not canon Star Trek.
If this was STD, I wouldn't have watched it... LOL
Non-verbal my eye. The crew didn't know Picard was captive. That was telepathy.
He explained he was captain
This goes back to Encounter at Farpoint, Troi said she taught Riker telepathy but it seemed he was rusty. It can be assumed she continued to now that they are reunited... off screen.
3:24 always made me laugh seeing Picard befuddled.
“Now, worf!”
“Firing photon torpedos, full spread!”
It also doesn't hurt to have standard operating procedures and protocols in place beforehand.
That gesture with hand to neck could have been interpreted by Worf as "send them through an airlock".😆
Non-verbal communication...'Now Mr. Worf!'
Now.. what!?
@@Bartonovich52 Now.. what!? Oh yeah, aliens vaporized sir!
"Today is a good day to die" NO MR. WORF!!

'nuff said
Now this is a good example of speaking without words. ♠️♠️♠️
Sadly If I were part of the bridge crew of the Enterprise-D I wouldn't know what Picard's plan would be because it's next to impossible for me to read non-verbal cues.
When you've been with one commander long enough.
You would never have even been admitted to Starfleet Academy.
Dom Oranzi
Lol
The only non verbal cue was to Riker. Everything else was likely his plan, communicated from the commanders console to tactical and ops. Riker and Picard have served together for a short period, but Riker was an excellent fit to Picard’s command style.
most probably there was a protocol for something like this. picard probably cued which protocol to apply, rest is dominoes.
so we re not alone.
I love how it takes 3 different crewmen to turn on one force field
the fact they beamed through the shields didn't register to you
@@toomanyaccountsThe ship runs on antimatter.
We're just saying irrelevant things, right? Am I getting this?
"Imprisonment is an injury regardless of how you justify it.."
Saying it's an injury is a bit of a stretch, but it's certainly a use of force, with intent to deny freedom.
@@illshouyu the statement wasn't restricted to "physical" injuries, tho...
Wholesome, smart, fun, moral. Good times.
Non verbal communicay: whips out my wally.
"Imprisonment is an injury regardless of how you justify it." Captain Picard said abolish prisons.
Well no, injury is sometimes justified. In self-defense, or to prevent greater injury. But not for curiosity's sake.
Later on Picard made a deal with "Q" and had the crew Mind Wiped of the whole Incident… After banging the Doctor
That's literally pro-rape talk. Hope you realize that.
@@chewbackagrizelda6617 He's clearly talking about consensual sex since Dr Crusher was attracted to Picard, but it's interesting to know what's constantly on your mind.

When the dudes having a conversation with Picard and they are nodding and pushing buttons. That is the epitome of what is going on in my head when people speak and I just dont care about the words coming out. Completely spaced out on every single word the alien was saying and was just so strapped into the buttons being pressed like crazy and nodding. lol, at least I can re-watch it.
By non verbal communication and that thumbnail I was expecting Riker to whip out his second in command=D
Puts a whole new spin on the "Riker Maneuver."
LMAO 😂
Aaaahhhhh back when Trek was Trek
that look on her face and that pause of picards "engage" was pricelessly funny XD
its like "what sexual things has my doppelganger been up to with beverly?!"... its funny nonetheless
Picard: *gives look*
Wesley: *fires torpedo into the bridge (to disable)*
2:56 - 2:57 how is that not a meme yet
kevinerosa **_**
did you have to do a timekey spread of one whole second? lol
Frakes has the best exaggerated expressions.
love how Picard doesn't think to demand the freedom of his fellow captives
What happened...
Wait they are awaiting my commands
*N'gage*
That was the best part of that episode. "Now get off my ship".
"Get the hell off my stage." (Steve Wilko)
I will always love this show. Miss TNG.
Picard , we find your uniforms offensive , worf , narrow the force field ..
This was when Jack was conceived.
"We now know of your race"
But don't they only know them in Physical Appearance & Tactics only? They never got their names, planet of origin, history, etc.
Sensors likely gave them enough to distinguish them from range.
Beverly Crusher gave a look of Make it So with your photon torpedo.
“Imprisonment is an injury, regardless of how you justify it.”
You hear that 2019?
I been saying this for years! We need to ice motherfuckas doing crime and shit instead of this incarceration bs we doing now.
Gaius Maecanus Sir, this is a Popeye’s.
@@MichaelParthum Any point to what you said though? Or are you just upset someone caught you taking a quote out of context and giving other people a framework?
Or are the the type of stoner-bro-dude-guy that wants to sound smarter than others by purloining famous quotes but then lack the cognitive ability to form them into a philosophy?
A malt liquor philosopher.
Gaius Maecanus If you didn’t understand the subtext of what I was trying to say, basically Picard would agree that keeping immigrants in cages is an injustice.
Have the whole star trek series on DVD I always liked them
When this episode first aired in UK in early 1990s my dear sister said i looked like one of the aliens,, i said not funny!
I bet Riker will enjoy writing that report.
Back when Trek was awesome, well written, character driven, and entertaining. Unlike Discovery... YEESH!
Although I will add that Lower Decks is pretty damn good so far!
You'd think on an advanced ship like a Galaxy class you could create a bridge forcefield a little more easily than by having to input commands on three different consoles by three different crewman...
Only took 3 computer commands from 3 diff people to establish the force field lol
I figured, given everything aliens could have on hand, they wanted to be REALLY sure they couldn't escape.
KingOfElectricNinjas...That makes sense...and to show teamwork as opposed to the aliens in the episode who were just into trapping people and not much else.
One of the Best Series i have seen.
Love Picard owning these toe rags.
So it begs the question: Did Picard's double "get it on" with Dr. Crusher?
1:02 Picard Maneuver before a cool move :)
Damn!! And here all this time, I thought Frankenstein was ugly.
1:38 The other picard manevuer. The "Picard Stew". Usually applied to the enemy of the week.
there are some episodes in some tv shows that stand out among the crowd , this is one of them, the skit "silent communication" is most eggscllent.
