      @TheDashACorner 6 років тому +59

      @Jebediah Clang And how is a fixed force field any similar to a uniquely used force field like this one? On the Shuttle bay all variables are set in stone. This one needed to be handcrafted to the position and size.

    • @TheDashACorner
      @TheDashACorner 6 років тому +22

      @Jebediah Clang You could modify the hardware of a shuttle bay force field altering length, width, position etc. (which are the variables or you could also say parameters I'm talking about). A shuttle bay force field generator is not made to have these parameters to be variable. English is not my native language. But I think you already gathered so much by now. So why being so picky?! It was entirely possible to understand what I meant.
      There are many complicated things done easily because of someone who already thought it entirely through. They create a function that does most of the hard work with one click. So, of course, can 1 person perform a lot of things simultaneously. So while force fields need to be in place everywhere on the ship they are usually there to seal hull breaches. Maybe there is not a standardized function to create a force field on the bridge at any position/size given so they have to (re-)configure it entirely by hand.
      Your very mobile phone can do remarkable things but what happens if you want something that your phone isn't able to do? You need more software. And sometimes there is no software because no one made it. So easy things can get very complicated.
      While this is science fiction it is not "god we know it all fiction". If they had thought everything through already and made a code for every little detail then this show would have been quite boring.

      @hellstorme 5 років тому +5

      *Problem:* You think he was saying that it is WRONG to imprison people under any circumstances. That is not what he said. He said imprisonment is an injury. In the clip above, the aliens took someone without consent or cause from that person, held them against their will, and altered their entire lives. While the aliens did not physically *harm* Picard at all, the injury was to his mental state. It was unjustified given that he had broken no law, and committed no wrong.
      If Picard was arguing that imprisonment *in all situations* was an injury, and thereby morally wrong, then his imprisonment of the two aliens would thereby also making him guilty of a crime. But it wasn't, was it? It was *justified*. They broke human laws, or at least violated a person's rights, and needed to be taught why humans and the Federation thought that was wrong.
      *Solution:* Numerous times through-out the series Picard was in favor of lethal force, and imprisonment. Imprisonment *can indeed* be an injury. However it must be understood that some injuries against a person might be necessary for punishment, reform, and justice.
      You cannot murder someone, or cause someone to die from neglect, then tell the judge he is immoral for putting you in prison. That isn't how the concept of justice works. That isn't how a rational person would view the circumstance.
