Well done on another good repair👍 I’m not sure that modern locomotives will be running at 40 + years old
It’s funny you should say that. I found an old, 1987, Lima catalogue in a storage box yesterday and flicking through it. I reckon I own about 25% of the diesels in there and every single one is still an excellent runner. They just don’t make em like that anymore.
Remagnetizing the ring magnet was exactly as instructed by John Holland . Nice one Bill 😊
What a great puzzled solved… The older the model the greater the satisfaction upon getting them running, roll on the next 10 or 20 plus year of fun and enjoyment. Great to see a master craftsman at work. Good product placement with the mug🤣 all best Marc from Leighton Buzzard
These early Doublo locos are the Tonka Toys of Model Railways. It's never time wasted to bring one back to working order.
another great job bill
OOBill Having serviced several dozen of these Hornby Dublo 08's over the years - the problem you were coming up against lay with the free movement of the brushes in the brush tubes & the alignment of the brush tension springs. With the motor top housing removed & placed on its side, the test is to see if the brush will 'fall through' the brush holder tube. it has to be really free to do so as the slightest undulation in the commutator face will cause the brush to rise & then stick in the tube if there is any old oil or dirt present. Equally important is the alignment of the brush spring, it has to lay centrally across the cut out in the outer end of the brush tube - watching your video the the tail of the spring on the negative side (nearest to the camera) was very distorted & way out of true. Hope this helps next time you come across one of these fine locos.
A great repair job, Bill. I had one hell of a job with a Bachmann Split Chassis loco. It was advertised as a non-runner. I took that loco apart 6 times. I left it in pieces on the worktable. The next morning I cleaned and checked every item and rebuilt it, Tried it with a 9-volt battery and it ran as good as gold. What did I do, that I did not do the last 5 times? Not a clue. Martin. Heh, it occurs to me that this is the first time I've seen a pipecleaner used to clean something instead of a crafting material. :D
Lovely to see another 3 rail fixed and back.on track
Another Quality Repair oobill ,Even Though It Was Been Troublesome, Was Nice To SeeThat Horrnby Dublo Is Alive And Well ....!,
Can't Wait For The Next Repair Video, Great Work ooobill...! 👍👍
Great repair there Bill, just goes to show there can be multiple issues that all contribute to poor, or no running.
The Dublo 08 is a lovely old model, I wish i still had my Wrenn version.
That was a nice challenge and a nice model too. I have had the same problem with brushes that looked fine but didn't work. I filed them and they came good. I wondered if the end of the brush became contaminated and needed to be 'refreshed'. All part of the fun. 😊👍
Wonderful job bill, that old loco was a mess, and very very manky as you said
Another good repair with good insight
I’ve never seen the Dublo 08. Given it’s age it actually looks fairly detailed!! Good job with the repair!
I used to have a Wrenn version of the Dublo 08 and it is a great model for its time, much better than the Triang equivalent!
@@ScreamingLordStokes the detail of the Triang version is why I was so surprised this one looks as good as it does! In my opinion the triang one not having the outside crank things attached to the coupling rods (sorry forgot the name of them 😭) kinda stops it from looking like an 08
@@modelrailfan37 The real 08 has the chassis frames outside the wheels like this model. The Hornby ones until quite recently used a steam loco chassis with inside frames which once you realise this never really looks right.
@@user-pf3ye6yi9n exactly! I don’t care too much about detail and accuracy, but it does bother me when something is glaringly wrong such as on the older Hornby 08. I’m glad Hornby retooled it primarily for that reason!!
Often with the Hornby Dublo models, it's getting that 'sweet point' with the position of the armature. From experience, they need to be able to move a bit up and down, but not too much. And, as you've found, brushes need to be good. Keep up the great work.
good vlog on channel nice work on the fix of the locos you do keep up the vids you do on the channel thanks for the share on channel
My wife has said that some of models are like children in that they suddenly have mood swings.
Wonderful to see another 3 rail loco sorted out ^.^
I'll admit to having a soft spot for the old 3 rail stuff, for me, it's much better than the modern stuff. So much more interesting in my eyes compared to modern locos.
Might be why I collect it and aim to build a layout with it sometime
I have to say that in my experience of Dublo, those copper-coated brushes have caused me no end of problems and replacing them with the more usual plain carbon ones works for me. Looks to be an early 08 - single piece coupling rods and no milling of the chassis to improve ventilation to the motor, which could overheat easily.
I was starting to wonder if the old suppressor had packed it in.
I chased a gremlin on one of my dublo locos for hours and hours, until I removed the suppressor. Then she was as good as gold.
I usually file up the end of my brushes or just replace the shorter ones if I do a rebuild.
They bed in again pretty quickly.
Will there be a OOBill craft beer as sold at the Gnome's Legs? (merch?)😀
I'd just drink it all....
Great video, Bill. I like these older locos and i'm glad to see another one running again. I would suggest that that loco will still be gong long after most of today's models have packed in! Cheers, Jim L
PS, See you at St Andrews?
Sadly no I won't be at St Andrews. Hope to be at the Dundee and Falkirk shows.
I am not a fan of three rail, but the repair was interesting so nice repair and video. I think if I seen you cleaned both ends of the old brushes I would feal better about replacing them but, brushes are cheap. Jersey Bill
The brushes were cleaned in the sonic cleaner and both ends were filed. They had a very high proportion of copper to carbon which I think is part of the problem. Replacing them with softer carbon brushes sorted the running immediately.
@@oobill I Missed that and will try to be more attentive. Thanks for replying and clarifying. I now feal better. lol
help,my hornby old 9f dcc working greatstop start a wire from pivot one of two broken off,so tried resoldering now shorted the circuit, this old connector needs your kind help can you have a look please
Can you claim to do your own maintenence if you dont own a Manky brush? Great to watch as always
And other content creators are loosing the mind over the £250-300 price for the forthcoming new tooling Bachmann 08
Hi Bill, could you please put the details of the endoscope you use in FAQs? Thanks
Will do.
The gnome should have a vest on while lineside and should abstain from alcohol
The vest wouldn't have even been thought of and abstaining from alcohol would have been merely "recommended" when this model was first manufactured!
Asking a gnome to wear hi vis and not drink would be asking for trouble. Dinnae mess wi gnomes...
@@oobill I'll drink to that and so will he. 10/10
Interesting to See the Gubbins inside these old Workhorses Great Job 👍🏻
Common tater...🤭
I didn't know the original 08 model was correctly outside framed. Was there a 2 rail version?
There was a dublo 2 rail version. It went on to become the wrenn version. When wrenn bought the dublo tooling.
