  • I gotta be honest, cigars are not good for you. Like lots of things in our world today, they come with a health risk that each adult has to consider for themselves. And when it comes to the topic of cigars and fitness, there are not a lot of studies to look toward. Nonetheless, this question did come up recently and this is one topic that I have invested a lot of time and attention to.
I don't have any conclusive facts to give you, and this video is NOT medical advice. But I can share my experience with you. As someone who loves both cigars and physical fitness, this is my experience.

I’ve been fighting stage 4 cancer for nearly 3 years and started smoking cigars only a few months ago. Life is too short and it’s the experiences that really matter. Even if there is a small impact on health, it’s worth it if you’re living. No one lives forever. Enjoy the time you have. You should still eat well and exercise though.

If you haven't yet, it's not too late to come to Jesus. I'm not saying you'll definitely beat this and I hope you are doing well. But with Christ, we can have hope; not necessarily in this life, but with him in Heaven. Romans 3:21-31 lays out the Gospel Message very clearly; that while none of us can be good enough to get to Heaven, by faith in Jesus Christ and acknowledgement of his work on the cross, we can take on the righteousness of God himself, in that he will no longer count our sins against us. I can tell you first hand that I was hopeless and miserable for years but when I finally committed to being a servant of God instead of trying to be good enough, my outlook on life changed. Knowing that I have a place in Heaven has made all the difference. I know I can't be good enough, but placing my trust in Jesus has taken that burden away from me. You might not believe, but if you're even a little bit open to it, please pray once that God would show himself to you and show you the truth. I'll be praying for you as well. And as for good cigars, I will recommend Blackbird all day. So far my favorite is the Jackdaw. Have a great day

You didn't use the Surgeon General's report to break the political propaganda? Oligarch's can't own and feed off of the cigar industry because they can't do it. It is an Artisan's work.
My post to Tim. 1972 and 1976 Surgeon General's Report regarding non inhaling light to moderate cigar/pipe smokers compared to total nonsmokers brought longer life expectancy as many as four 4 years. Multiple Surgeon General reports clearly show that pipes OR cigars ARE safer, a lot safer than cigarettes. Cigarettes burn very hot on draw which make much more tar per gram of tobacco. Inhaling those kills a lot and causes much disease. "Not a safer alternative to cigarettes" Stop parroting the politically correct propaganda of elitists politicians. Anti stress hormones produced are like the ones from petting your cat or dog. Tending to and watching your aquarium etc.

See this: FROM THE LINKED 1986 ARTICLE. [[ The Surgeon General, for instance, states in his current report that pipe and cigar smokers do not appear to experience risk of heart disease that is significantly higher than that experienced by nonsmokers. Other studies have found that pipe smokers seem to even have slightly greater longevity than nonsmokers due to the relaxation factor. And as for cancer, the incidence of oral cancers in pipe and cigar smokers was at one time found to be .0025% above that for nonsmokers, a figure that still stands in the body of research. ]] .0025% is 25/ten thousandths of ONE percent increase of lip cancer. I'm 51 and have been smoking cigars for about 25 years now and 1-2 a day for about the past 5 years. About 95% of the time, I'm smoking while out on a 5-6 mile hike-year round in Minnesota! Having my cigar is my motivation for going on a hike in the first place. Being out in nature while having a premium smoke go hand in hand for me and I still feel the benefits outweigh the risks-or at least even them out I hope!

I have been smoking cigars for many years. While I am not a heavy smoker, I do smoke 1 - 2 cigars a day. I am 76 years old and am in better shape than friends that are my age and some even years younger than me. I play golf on regular basis and still ride my Harley Davidson. While cigars may not be good for you they are good for your mental health. A good cigar and something nice to drink (bourbon, scotch, coffee) is very good way to come down from the pressures of the day. Great Vids

Nothing is aboslutely good or bad. We have to make our own decision. Most importantly, using cigar meets more friends and ahappy life is what we want. Just don't abuse yourself with anything, even water... you can't drink too much or you get poisoned right?

Hey Tim, can confirm I’m not a bot. Just thought I’d echo your message but with my own results. I’ve never been in better shape and I’m now 36, the last 12months of taking my fitness seriously I’ve managed podium finishes in both CrossFit and triathlon competitions and now preparing for my first Ironman.
Something you didn’t touch on and I thought was worth sharing as someone from the fitness community is the downtime associated with cigar smoking. As you can imagine busy life + high intensity training/hobbie needs quality downtime. 1 hour of just sitting peacefully is needed and is my solitude as the man of the house and I attribute this to my success with sport and day to day life.

Pure air cured tobacco has high alkaline content when smoked, antiinflammatory, and gauges my breathing like some breathing exercises I do for free diving. Smoking labors my breathing when running but not with body building movements. If I didn't have to run I'd be smoking more so I guess it's good I have to run hahaha.

I frequently enjoy an afternoon cigar at work followed shortly by an evening lifting session at the gym. My experience is you can have both. I also try to protect my health on those days by smoking lighter cigars, drinking plenty of water, and allowing an hour of rest between my last puff and hitting the weights. Game on, bros.

What about the smell? Even when I go into my local cigar shop to pick up a stick or two I come out smelling like cigars. Do you always smell like a cigar? Do you shower and throw on a new set of clothes when you get home? Do you have any specific laundry tips? What does your spouse think about the smell? My wife has a pretty sensitive sense of smell so when I smoke a cigar I usually shower before going to bed. I apologize for the barrage of questions but I’ve always been curious about how people that work in the industry or smoke multiple cigars a day deal with the smell on their clothes and whatnot.

I smoke 1 cigar a day for 7 yrs now. I smoke at night before bed, afterwards i immediately take a shower and put my smoke clothes in the garage to air out. I love cigars but im not the kind of guy who smoke in the car or light up a cigar after lunch. I love the taste and smell while enjoying but afterwards i dont want to smell like smoke on my clothes or have cigar breath or go to work smelling like a chimney for i feel like being around alot of people smelling like old smoke is unattractive and rude. Lets face it. Even though we love our cigars walking around smellin like old smoke stinks regardless of anything you smoke

I found that always wearing a hat, and a zipped up hoody or a jacket on top of your regular wear shirt while you smoke can keep the most of the bad smell away from your hair and the shirt.
I just wash my face and brush my teeth after smoking and go on with the rest of the day.
Not a smoke shop worker btw.

I rplied this to Tim.

You are giving a great speech, and I really am enjoying the fact that you are giving both sides of the coin but as a registered nurse who works in the hospital environment or I should say did work in the hospital environment, any type of pipe and cigar smoking, you inhale a very small amount of the cigar or pipe smoke into your lungs and over a period of time. This will affect your lung capacity. With that said, every person is different, every person inhales a different small amount of smoke. this is the information that I have received and have been told by a lot of pulmonary doctors. I myself had been smoking cigars since I was 15 years old. I am now 63 and yes, as for me, I can tell you that my ability to run a mile like I did 20 years ago I can’t do it. I hope this helps you in your quest.

@@franco2739 Google "nicotine's effect on muscle growth/recovery" what I see is that nicotine effects a lot of things that can slow muscle development such as testosterone, o2, growth hormones, proteins etc. but most of all, like caffeine it constricts blood vessels thus slowing down blood flow and the delivery of oxygen and protein to the muscle. But obviously I'm not a doctor so one's own research is important.

I've trained jiu jitsu consistently for going on 7+ years and smoke 1 cigar a day on average. I don't feel like it has had any sort of appreciable negative impact on performance.
While I don't do competitions myself, I train with all the competition guys at the gym. I can do 2 hours of grappling without thinking about it (usually 5-8 minute rounds, 60 seconds rest in between).
Cigars are a net positive in my life.
Thank you for making this video, Tim. It's a subject I've thought about on occasion and wondered what others experience with it may be.

I’m not a health expert, but I started smoking 13 months ago and smoke 1-2 per day. Since starting, my doc has taken me completely off my blood pressure medication and said my BP is better than ever. Not saying cigars are healthy, but maybe the relaxation aspect and reduced stress outweighs the other risks?

There's no link between smoking cigars and fitness level. The studies that say otherwise are correlational. Obviously if you smoke you are less likely overall to be into health things. You would have to claim that nicotine negatively impacts fitness which it doesn't
