There I was, a new student at Polytechnic High School, in San Francisco, September 1957. Bob St. Clair, came to speak to the students, and the auditorium was full. He told us how he tried out for the football team, and was rejected because he was “too small”. Then he told us how he “went home that summer and filled up on banana splits”, and made the team the following year.
During the 1980's, I was at the Bank of America in Sunnyvale, California. The man in front of me went to the teller, and said, “I was the captain of the 49ers”! I knew who that was, and when I finished my transaction, Bob was at a small table doing some paperwork. I introduced myself, and reminded him of his visit to Poly High. He said “It is nice to meet some one my size”. I am 6'7" by the way.
We spoke for a few minutes and he invited my wife and I to his home in Santa Rosa. He then gave me his business card, and wrote his home phone number on it.
I never took him up on his kind invitation. He was one of my heroes! We miss him so much!

He would be big enough to play defensive end

This is the 49ers all-franchise OL:
Williams(3 time AP in a row in SF?! Who does that?! Very few; plus, a very decorated career)
    St. Clair
    Staley
    Mudd(60s all-decade and later a co-leader of Dungy's Colts)
McIntyre(5 PBs in a row showing dominance with 3 SB rings and 1 AP selection. Big silent part of why the 49ers were the team of the 80s)
    Cross*
Blue(4 time PBer and 3 time AP)
    Bosley(4 time PBer)
Imagine giving the 49ers all-franchise team of QBs, RBs, and FBs one of the best OLines of all time. That's what this is! Did not include 1 or 2 year players. Cross and Iupati at G were close, but Cross--like McIntyre--was a key part of a dynasty...
