LeBron is a great player, but as he gets older he seems to think the travelling violations do not apply to him. During the preparation/exhibition tournaments he absolutely abused those. In the game against Serbia (I only managed to see about 2/3 of the game) he had perhaps one or two that I've seen but he was also called on one (if memory serves). I don't think Serbia lost because of referees. Serbia lost because against this USA team they needed to be perfect basically 100% of the time and in the 4th quarter shots just stopped going in. When you have players like LeBron, Steph, Durant, etc., in front of you, you cannot give them that advantage. Still, considering the difference in quality overall between the players (taken one by one), Serbia had an extraordinary game and would've been deserved winners.

I'm an American 🇺🇲 and I didn't believe that until I saw that France had major points from free throws against Frnace and Germany in which both games they scored under 90. Serbia vs U.S. was nowhere as bad as that officiating. Fouls will happen, but not like France.

Tell me which specific calls you're talking about. Enough with these vague, "the refs changed the game." Because so far, every time a specific accusation is made, its quickly shown that the person complaining simply doesn't understand the rules or didn't observe the scenario correctly. For example, the 2 calls most non-USA fans bring up the most were clearly shown to be correct calls in this video. Yet, they continue complaining *about those specific calls* EVEN AFTER watching the video. Proving that the issue is they just don't understand the rules. Example: The halfcourt violation. That was very clearly shown to be a correct call by the refs. A difficult scenario to call correctly, and the refs nailed it. Same with the 6 pt play in which Jokic did an offball foul while Durant was in the act of shooting a 3. So have you considered the issue may be that you're not understanding the rules just like all these non-USA fans? (Which, to be honest, I suspect you may actually be in reality)? So far I haven't seen anyone at all bring up the numerous calls and no-calls that benefited Serbia in the 1st half. Why? Because it's a well known issue among casuals that they only pay attention to officiating when emotions are high in late game scenarios. But the officiating matters just the same throughout the entire game.
I'm not from either country, not a fan of basketball either, was only watching it cause my country was casting it. Serbia deserved the win. A few calls were very suspect. You had a situation in 4th where Serbian player had an intentional foul movement to stop US counterattack and refs just let the game go and US hit 3pt after that (and with foul it would be a side ball with Serbian defense in line), just things like that decided the game since this was a close game.

FIBA has a chronic problem with the quality of referees officiating their competitions. It's bad that they ignore this from one competition to the next, and the worst part is that, for some reason, they reward such referees by appointing them to future competitions. Yesterday, we were expecting a spectacle between the two best teams of the tournament, but we got referees who weren't up to the task. It's a disaster!

You fail to see the point that players decide the game. After the US got the lead, coach Pesic for his greatness called an early panic timeout, then used up another one. Serbia were up 2, then missed a 3 that could not be any more wide open than that. As for those travel calls - same can be said for Serbia. The block by Embiid?? That was a missed call I agree - but you cannot blame it on him when Serbia didnt even bother looking to Joker to make a play leading to an open dunk. Hey guys, honestly, I understand how one would think it's a good idea to bring some other ref to judge ref'ing quality, but seriously, this is getting into Monty Pythons territory. Being Greek it reminds me of recorded divinations people got when they went to the oracles in ancient Greece to consult them if they would die if they went to war. "You shall return, not in the war you shall perish". So they went and when they died their relatives went back to the oracles to explain themselves. All of these things could be true - the refs did a so-so job, Serbia ran out of steam, and the Americans cranked it up in the fourth quarter. The main issue really was that spotty officiating derailed Serbia's momentum. The officiating in these games has been somewhat spotty, and there have been cases in previous Olympics where officials/judges were not exactly impartial. As a non-American myself, I feel for the Serbians, because underdogs sometimes really get the short end of the stick. Props to Stephen Curry, if he didn't go supernova we would be having a different conversation.

I'm an American, and just watched the highlights of USA v Serbia. There were some awful calls, and they came at a crucial time in the game. Triggering the comeback for USA. Embiid walk, moving screens, couple of fouls called in Lebron's favor were VERY light. But it was not called the same way for Serbia

At the end,referees tolerate it a way to much talking from Le Bron and rest of the crew…several technical misses from the refs. During the whole tournament we don’t see consistency,and then you have what we saw,a grey zone . This is not a circus,and show for the masses like the NBA is becoming ,it has to have rules and stick to them,no matter who is on the court.

If KD swiped at the ball Bogdanovich lost possession therefore it cannot be back court violation until he has full control of the ball again, but that was just one thing. There were so many fouls not called on USA and just as many nonexistent fouls called on Serbia.
You're having a fundamental misunderstanding of that call. The ball was indeed in his possession when he bounced the ball again. He could've gathered the ball and started a new dribble without any violations occurring, but instead, he dribbled it after KD touched the ball. That's textbook backcourt.

The video is biased, on 6 point play focusing on wrong parts of the play. If those 3 points were fairly counted, was it a foul, why, why USA ball too? Missing too many other plays with clear mistakes. Clear traveling throughout, out of bounds, too few fouls called on Jokic... It was a 4 point game, if just a few of those biased calls were fair, USA would lose.

Sorry to say this guy is wrong on the 6 point play. His video evidence is slow and fails to show that initial contact occurred when Durant was bringing the ball down not up on the shot. His video evidence is a second slow. Part of that is because Durant brings the ball down on his shot before bringing the ball up. Plus he fails to look at the screen set by AD which was illegal. Im a 25 yr referee of fiba bsketball. Sloppy replays by this guy but his knowledge of the rules is correct.

Hey BasketNews! Love the content, but I feel like the questions posed in this video lead toward the opinion that Serbia was mistreated by the refs. The game was refereed quite consistently. I agree with the referee's no-call of Lebron's hand-checking because hand-checking was rampant on both sides. While it's true that there was a missed call on Embiid's moving screen, there were a ton of no-calls on Jokic's moving screens which were prolific throughout the game. Look at some of Serbia's first baskets. Jokic is essentially moving Jrue Holiday out of every play with his backside. Anyways, great fight from Serbia, but they lost fair and square.

You are correct on most points. The referees made a lot of bad calls on both sides, they never had such a big game in their careers, so it was expected that they missed some calls. But, two things were really eye poking - letting LBJ constantly talk to the refs without a single technical foul called and a ton of missed travelling calls (by FIBA rules) on LBJ and Embiid. The refs were completely overwhelmed by the fact that there are big stars around them and by the importance of the game. Did it affect the game? Yes. Would it be different if the refereeing was better? We'll never know. In general, great game, and it's a shame that in such a good game refs are playing a role at all.

@@MilanFONovac FIBA adopted same traveling rules as NBA (gather step or zero step was added), so they are equal now. What is not equal is that in NBA referees are disregarding those rules and are letting players walk around. NBA players just get confused when in FIBA they actually get called.
So what if Jokic only shot 4 free throws? Rather than complain about the # of free throws, he needs to actually identify specific instances where he was fouled while shooting and it wasn't called. Exactly this the foul was on AD and not on KD who was taking that shot. The 3 should not have counted and USA should have just got a ball throw in. All in all a horrible decision by the refs which let the USA score 6 points in basically one possession. I'll admit we missed some important shots in the 4th quarter but if refs did a better job we would have entered the 4th quarter with score difference higher than 13 which would have been enough for Serbia to win.
The 3 absolutely counted. In both FIBA and the NBA when an off ball foul occurs while someone is in the shooting motion the ball doesn’t become dead until the shot is complete. KD clearly started his shooting motion before the foul was called and therefore the bucket counts and the us got the ball on the side as they weren’t in the bonus. This exact situation actually helped Serbia earlier in the game where the exact same thing happened.

Mate, I know the rules as well as anyone and I coach this beautiful game. And objectively, Serbia went away from what was working for them in the 4th especially after they gave up the lead. Jokic was not used well in crunch time - he didnt get a play called for him despite my admiration for Coach Pesic’s offense and defensive schemes. The last 4 crucial possessions for Serbia - Jokic got the ball in awkward spots and was not used as a scorer in the post or as a playmaker in the highpost. Instead what you got was: Serbia missed WIDE open 3 - mind you Jokic caught the ball in the post but had no cutters, but great ball movement when he passed it out - which would have given Serbia a 5 pt buffer. Then Curry made a 3 - US +1 - the illegal screen argument is a 50-50 call in my opinion. When the Serbian defender fell to the ground Embiid released to roll. It wasnt like he wrestled him. If anything the call should have been made at the point of attack, but the Serbian defender tried to spin away which would have affected what the ref saw (look closely - Embiid DID hold momentarily). But instead of waiting for a call - Jokic should have at least tried to close out and run Steph off the 3 pt line… but no. Micic quick trigger 3 off a hand off leading to LeBron’s runout. Poor shot selection tbh. Then Bogdanovic can argue he got pushed when he drove to the rim but instead of bejng patient, he went hero and ran into nobody and gave it away leading to Curry getting a runout. Then Coach Pesic calls his last time out. And for some reason, all the plays after that did not involve Jokic being the focal point. Kudos to Serbia for the near perfect game. But next time you blame the refs, watch the entire geme. It ultimately comes down to the players and coaches as they’re the decision makers out there.

LeBron is a great player, but as he gets older he seems to think the travelling violations do not apply to him. During the preparation/exhibition tournaments he absolutely abused those.

The officiating in the olympic basketball tournament was soo awful... just look at any French game that happened.
I'm an American 🇺🇲 and I didn't believe that until I saw that France had major points from free throws against Frnace and Germany in which both games they scored under 90. Serbia vs U.S. was nowhere as bad as that officiating. Fouls will happen, but not like France.

Tell me which specific calls you're talking about. Enough with these vague, "the refs changed the game." Because so far, every time a specific accusation is made, its quickly shown that the person complaining simply doesn't understand the rules or didn't observe the scenario correctly.
For example, the 2 calls most non-USA fans bring up the most were clearly shown to be correct calls in this video. Yet, they continue complaining *about those specific calls* EVEN AFTER watching the video.
Proving that the issue is they just don't understand the rules.
Example: The halfcourt violation. That was very clearly shown to be a correct call by the refs. A difficult scenario to call correctly, and the refs nailed it.
Same with the 6 pt play in which Jokic did an offball foul while Durant was in the act of shooting a 3.

Serbia deserved the win. A few calls were very suspect. Serbia wanted to look at the replay of most fouls and were denied. At the end of the game can see the ref's all happy and hanging around USA.

You had a situation in 4th where Serbian player had an intentional foul movement to stop US counterattack and refs just let the game go and US hit 3pt after that (and with foul it would be a side ball with Serbian defense in line), just things like that decided the game since this was a close game.

FIBA has a chronic problem with the quality of referees officiating their competitions. It's bad that they ignore this from one competition to the next, and the worst part is that, for some reason, they reward such referees by appointing them to future competitions. Yesterday, we were expecting a spectacle between the two best teams of the tournament, but we got referees who weren't up to the task. It's a disaster!
They're in war with euroleague, that's why the best referees don't get involved and we have to stick to those amateurs from Bosnia, Panama etc.

After the US ties it, Coach Pesic calls a panic time out - you needed that. But to his credit, it led to a bucket. Serbia up 2.
Serbia gets a stop. You fail to get a quality look, and settle for a tough shot. Serbia offensive board - leading to A SUPER WIDE OPEN 3 on the right wing with nobody within 15 feet of the guy in the vicinity - you missed it.
Next possession Curry hits that 3 to put them up by 1, no pass offense leading to the run out. You can argue illegal pick, but to me, it was a clean strong down screen. Where was Joker? Picking his nose and didnt even bother to run Curry off the 3 pt line.
Micic decides to go solo, and pulls up for a quick 24 footer… led to LeBron running out. Because Serbia used all their bitch ass clear take fouls, no choice but to let him run out for a score.
Bogdanovic next play, decides to drive and kick, didnt even use Jokic. Decides to kick it out, leading to Curry’s steal and run out.
Coach Pesic decides to use his last time out.
Next play, which Bogdanovic fucked up again - got picked up by KD full court and at mid court, it was a clear and clean reach/deflection by KD. And if you know the rules, the ball was recovered and bounced AT the halfcourt line - CLEAR backcourt violation. Now, you can argue 50-50 call, but Coach Pesic decided not to challenge. If it was challenged - it would have allowed Coach Pesic to draw something up, like a quick hitter for 2 or 3.
After that, you got what you wanted and force the US to chuck up a poor shot - LeBron’s questionable 3.
That led to Serbia getting the and 1 play for Bogdanovic.
Then next possession, your team forgot that KD was on the floor and the ball was probably gonna go to the US’s best closer/iso scorer. Instead of changing something up - Serbia decides straight man to man, knowing the US GOT their favoured match-up. You could have fouled or sent a double team to contain KD to get the ball somewhere but you failed yet again.

All of these things could be true - the refs did a so-so job, Serbia ran out of steam, and the Americans cranked it up in the fourth quarter. The main issue really was that spotty officiating derailed Serbia's momentum. The officiating in these games has been somewhat spotty, and there have been cases in previous Olympics where officials/judges were not exactly impartial. As a non-American myself, I feel for the Serbians, because underdogs sometimes really get the short end of the stick. Props to Stephen Curry, if he didn't go supernova we would be having a different conversation.

I'm an American, and just watched the highlights of USA v Serbia. There were some awful calls, and they came at a crucial time in the game. Triggering the comeback for USA. Embiid walk, moving screens, couple of fouls called in Lebron's favor were VERY light. But it was not called the same way for Serbia

He could've gathered the ball and started a new dribble without any violations occurring, but instead, he dribbled it after KD touched the ball. That's textbook backcourt.

The video is biased, on 6 point play focusing on wrong parts of the play. If those 3 points were fairly counted, was it a foul, why, why USA ball too? Missing too many other plays with clear mistakes. Clear traveling throughout, out of bounds, too few fouls called on Jokic... Sorry to say this guy is wrong on the 6 point play. His video evidence is slow and fails to show that initial contact occurred when Durant was bringing the ball down not up on the shot. His video evidence is a second slow. Part of that is because Durant brings the ball down on his shot before bringing the ball up. Plus he fails to look at the screen set by AD which was illegal. Hey BasketNews! Love the content, but I feel like the questions posed in this video lead toward the opinion that Serbia was mistreated by the refs. The game was refereed quite consistently. I agree with the referee's no-call of Lebron's hand-checking because hand-checking was rampant on both sides. While it's true that there was a missed call on Embiid's moving screen, there were a ton of no-calls on Jokic's moving screens which were prolific throughout the game. Look at some of Serbia's first baskets. Jokic is essentially moving Jrue Holiday out of every play with his backside. Anyways, great fight from Serbia, but they lost fair and square.

You are correct on most points. The referees made a lot of bad calls on both sides, they never had such a big game in their careers, so it was expected that they missed some calls. But, two things were really eye poking - letting LBJ constantly talk to the refs without a single technical foul called and a ton of missed travelling calls (by FIBA rules) on LBJ and Embiid. The refs were completely overwhelmed by the fact that there are big stars around them and by the importance of the game. Did it affect the game? Yes. Would it be different if the refereeing was better? We'll never know. In general, great game, and it's a shame that in such a good game refs are playing a role at all.

Exactly this the foul was on AD and not on KD who was taking that shot. The 3 should not have counted and USA should have just got a ball throw in. All in all a horrible decision by the refs which let the USA score 6 points in basically one possession. I'll admit we missed some important shots in the 4th quarter but if refs did a better job we would have entered the 4th quarter with score difference higher than 13 which would have been enough for Serbia to win.
The 3 absolutely counted. In both FIBA and the NBA when an off ball foul occurs while someone is in the shooting motion the ball doesn’t become dead until the shot is complete. KD clearly started his shooting motion before the foul was called and therefore the bucket counts and the us got the ball on the side as they weren’t in the bonus. This exact situation actually helped Serbia earlier in the game where the exact same thing happened.

The refs were letting both team hand check all the game. You don’t have that physical of a game with only 24 total free throws distributed evenly (12-12 until intentional foul to end the game) without the refs allowing physical play across the board. Quit whining
Serbia won this game, and its a shame for whole world and specially for "so called dream team" Whole World agree on that. American team should gift a medal to Panama's ref.

Mate, I know the rules as well as anyone and I coach this beautiful game. And objectively, Serbia went away from what was working for them in the 4th especially after they gave up the lead.
Jokic was not used well in crunch time - he didnt get a play called for him despite my admiration for Coach Pesic’s offense and defensive schemes. The last 4 crucial possessions for Serbia - Jokic got the ball in awkward spots and was not used as a scorer in the post or as a playmaker in the highpost.
Instead what you got was:
Serbia missed WIDE open 3 - mind you Jokic caught the ball in the post but had no cutters, but great ball movement when he passed it out - which would have given Serbia a 5 pt buffer.
Then Curry made a 3 - US +1 - the illegal screen argument is a 50-50 call in my opinion. When the Serbian defender fell to the ground Embiid released to roll. It wasnt like he wrestled him. If anything the call should have been made at the point of attack, but the Serbian defender tried to spin away which would have affected what the ref saw (look closely - Embiid DID hold momentarily). But instead of waiting for a call - Jokic should have at least tried to close out and run Steph off the 3 pt line… but no.
Micic quick trigger 3 off a hand off leading to LeBron’s runout. Poor shot selection tbh.
Then Bogdanovic can argue he got pushed when he drove to the rim but instead of bejng patient, he went hero and ran into nobody and gave it away leading to Curry getting a runout.
Then Coach Pesic calls his last time out. And for some reason, all the plays after that did not involve Jokic being the focal point.
Kudos to Serbia for the near perfect game. But next time you blame the refs, watch the entire geme.
It ultimately comes down to the players and coaches as they’re the decision makers out there.
