I'm french an I get emotionnal watching this report. First because I was a basketball player, coach and I'm still a lover of the game. My most important coach (when I was 15 to 19) was Srđan Kalember (I knew him as Serge, like me, at the time), who really teached me the fundamentals and the game, but also helped me to be who I am with his exigency and discipline. [EDIT : he appears at the beginning of the video, he played with the Red Star in the 40's and with the national team in the world cup 1950 in Buenos Aires] . He was semi-retreated from the game as a professionnal, but he lived in my little town of Rixheim (Alsace, near Mulhouse) in the eighties and he offered to train our non-professionnal team for free, for the love of the game. I often think about him when it comes to basketball, or Serbia, and this report gives me the wish to come and visit Beograd one day. RIP, coach.

All the while we were comparing these two basketball legends. The city was amazing and full of athletes. You can see them on the courts even on Saturdays. Respect Serbia and its culture

Their National team was defeated in the best basketball game I had ever seen, but their team played with so much heart and emotion, I became a fan for life. I have ordered a "SRBIJA" basketball jersey like they ones they proudly wore against the USA.
As a Greek, i am proud of our basketball history and heritage but my god i'm so envious of serbian school of basketball....how is it possible for such a small country (smaller than mine) to produce in EVERY generation such huge talents and have an even bigger talent pool coming from behind!! Dare i say that the talent in serbia (and Spain for that matter) surpasses the US talent nowdays. P.S. Pop was (and still is) light years ahead from his time!! Hat's off to the Serbians and Jugoslavians for giving so much to the game!!
I get it why it's hard to understand from Your perspective, but we who grew up training basketball in Serbia can tell you - when you watch those guys bring those medals to the balcony in Belgrade, and you know you're a member of a small nation that just beat everyone and anyone - you get to stand on the shoulders of those giants and you either put in 250% of yourself into the training or you realise you're not really cut out for it and you should make space for someone else who is. Coaches are rigorous, basketball trainings were super tough and repetitive - GOD how repetitive it was, I get anxious just thinking about it. But you know that saying "I don't fear a man who threw 10.000 punches once, but the man who threw 1 punch 10.000 times. Repetition is key, coaches demand results, they push you to your limits and you overcome those limits, then you just want to see how far you can go. It's a tough environment to be in, but know that, at least in my time, some 20 years ago - over 70% of kids tried and trained basketball at least for a year or two. Serbia bro. Much love from a neighbour :)
It's the way of living and how Serbian kids are raised - you're always part of a family, or a Friendship group. The team is everything in Serbia. Also sports - it's important kids do sports activity from early age- anything to keep your body moving and make friends. From there things evolve

As an ex-basketball player from Angola, I was raised in Europe and admire and respect the power and impact that the balkans philosophy and approach to Basketball instil in players worldwide!
Balkan basketball philosophy is Serbian philosophy because everyone learned from Serbian coaches. I believe that African national teams would reach the top of basketball faster if they adopted the European basketball philosophy instead of the NBA style. If African coaches were trained in Europe, basketball in Africa would quickly break through to the top of the world. African football teams in the past were at the level of today's African basketball, and now they can compete with the best teams in the world. That time will come.

No one was a die hard fan, but watching basketball and going to a game occasionally is just normal stuff here so yeah, basketball is unavoidable. As a Serbian thank you for this, glad we are getting some love from NBA we Serbians had players in NBA for a while now, since Vlade Divac and Pedja Stojakovic, even coach Pop has Serbian origins.
The first Serb in the NBA was Zdravko Govedarica, known as Bato. Back in 1951, he was selected in the draft as the 24th pick by the Syracuse Nationals, today the Philadelphia 76ers. The second is Ljubiša Stefanović, known as Lou in America, who was chosen by Seattle in 1985 as the 97th pick in the draft.

Serbia lives for basketball. Children in my area play for hours...they don't wait for scouts, basketball is a way of life for us. Feints, passes, the art of playing is what Serbs enjoy. And stubbornness works on the field, you don't give up if you're a Serb, until the last breath, until the last second.
I remember that as kids during 90s, we had one sports magazine called Tempo, and in every issue of it there was a poster of NBA players in actions. Since the popularity of basketball was huge, cause we won Euro and World championship, we were also crazy about the NBA. Bulls were dominating, so my room was full of posters with Rodman, Jordan, Pipen, couple of Kemp, Hardaway and so on.. Beautiful basketball has saved us from the streets, war, poverty and all those bad effects on us as a children.

Im from the Philippines who is tagged as a basketball crazy nation but I would say that this country is doing the right way. Their passion translates into world class 11:15 basketball unlike in our country that is full of politics in it.

Finally some recognition, but it's not only Belgrade that is the head of the basketball, many talents move there to get scouted easier, but all of the greats always came from different cities as even the best Serbian coach Zeljko Obradovic came from a small town called Cacak. Basketball is infectious in every city, summer tournamets, people just love sports and want to be the best in it

You better have respect since your country was part of the most obvious match fixing in the history of basketball. You know what I'm talking about. There is no way any referee team can be that bad. It was obvious what was going on and you know it.
RIP, coach.

As a basketball fan from Turkey, I visited Belgrade last year and got into a conversation with a taxi driver about who was the best coach in Europe. As I was trying to convince him that Obradovic was the best coach in the world at the moment, he looked me in the eye and said: "Have you never heard of Ivkovic? All the while we were comparing these two basketball legends. The city was amazing and full of athletes. You can see them on the courts even on Saturdays. Respect Serbia and its culture
Obra is the most successful coach in Europe for sure but Duda Ivkovic his coach was at another level with his wisdom, high IQ, and calmness. A true general. Fun fact: Duda Ivkovic is a distant relative of Nikola Tesla
Even on Saturdays? :D Most of us use all of our free time to ball, so Saturday is probably the main day for sports activities.

Also, this summer and following summers too, there is direct flight from Cagliari to Belgrade (apart from all year round from many cities in Italy) and in less than 2 hours you are here! Welcome!

Interesting because there is a possibility that people from Serbia and Sardinia are relatives according to genetic maps and old writings. God bless Serbia and Sardinia.Respect!
Their National team was defeated in the best basketball game I had ever seen, but their team played with so much heart and emotion, I became a fan for life. I have ordered a "SRBIJA" basketball jersey like they ones they proudly wore against the USA.
Where did I order the jwrsey
Also genetics, we are in top 3 tallest nations, combine with smarts and tough/warrior mentality really shows in sports
As they say, size doesn’t matter 😂
It's the way of living and how Serbian kids are raised - you're always part of a family, or a Friendship group. The team is everything in Serbia.
Also sports - it's important kids do sports activity from early age- anything to keep your body moving and make friends. From there things evolve

balkan philosophy needs more public exposure. Most people growing up in balkans are tough

Kakve emocije izaziva ovaj film.Sve čwstitke za isti👍.
You can find basketball court everywhere in Belgrade. Specially all around buildings in New Belgrade. I invite basketball lovers to visit Ada where there're few courts and always good players (and bars to refresh after hard games). I am not Serbian. I am just a basketball lover, a man that life decided that I will spend some time in Belgrade. I feel like I landed at paradise for basketball
Summers hot evenings mean only one thing... you open the window to cool your room and all you can hear is the bouncing basket ball going on for hours... that's the true sound of Belgrade 🏀
Finally some recognition, but it's not only Belgrade that is the head of the basketball, many talents move there to get scouted easier, but all of the greats always came from different cities as even the best Serbian coach Zeljko Obradovic came from a small town called Cacak. Basketball is infectious in every city, summer tournamets, people just love sports and want to be the best in it
True, but to be fair, it's the only large city in a small country, and other Hoop Cities are also regional basketball centers.
The industry centers always attract the best talent.
Pour résumer tout vos superbes commentaires, le basketball est le jeux à 5 contre 5 et la plus part de temps ce sont les Serbes qui gagnent… Puisque il y a une justice céleste. Gros bisous a toute ma race .❤❤❤
Thank you NBA for this lovely documentary! Greetings from Serbia to all the basketball fans around the world! 🇷🇸
