    This was a good informational video. In order to remove the whole cylinder head do I have to remove all the cam bolts or are there other bolts that need to be removed?

      Bought my 2000 LSV8 Sport in California before having my right shoulder rebuilt after completely blowing it out after 10 years of destroying it in Seal training, I had a '92 SHO 5 speed so I needed an automatic while my shoulder would be in a sling. It was an excellent car without a stitch of trouble for 4 years. I replaced all the brakes right after purchasing it. Shortly after buying it my ex totalled the Camry I had bought her and as soon as I was no longer in a sling she absconded with my car. 4 years later the cooling system blew the upper radiator hose off a couple of times and it overheated. I replaced the whole cooling system and after that it ate ignition coils constantly. I still have the car, chain tensioner failure skipped time and I still haven't fixed it years later although I have the whole timing set just waiting. As soon as I do that I am pulling the engine and transmission and replacing it with a rowdy 351W 6 speed combination! I may actually put the 3.9l and drivetrain from the LS in my '77 Cobra II for something a little different.

      Chain slap isn't something you want to play with. If that chain snaps, off goes the timing cover to replace the chain. I get why they didn't. They longer it runs the more likely it'll break

    • @Gkitchens1
      @Gkitchens1 3 роки тому

      You really don't want to run an interference engine with chain slap. It sounds like a loud clicking not quite knocking noise, and in my case there is a metal on metal squeal too.

Wondering i think did torque correctly but i couldn't get the 90' without feeling like i was going to break the bolt. Any tips would be awesome appreciated 😅

    From my research, it's recommended to replace all 4 chains and tensioners due to the poor design they had on the early engines. They say that the plastic debris from the secondary tensioners fall downward along the primary chain and get into the primary tensioners and/or chain and sprocket causing even more damage. If they fall and don't cause any issues, the debris is still in the front engine cover/oil pan also running the risk of other issues.
    I'm so fed up with plastic or nylon parts inside engines ! Who dreams this stuff up?

    • @OscarMartinez-ob3wi

      Well, I have 270k milles on mine with no engine problems at all other than normal wear and tear on certain minor things. But yes changed oil panel gasket due of leak and found debris on bottom. Drive it as hard as I want and still good.

    • @Garth2011
      @Garth2011 2 роки тому +1

      @@OscarMartinez-ob3wi That is a hint...better to fix them now than later because these engines are called "interference" engines meaning the valves will hit the pistons if they are out of time...complete engine job if that happens

    Just curious how much this would cost as apposed to replacing the entire gears and everything. I thought this might be a cost affective and great preventative maintenance measure since this is the tensioners are what normally fails on this motor.

  • @Garth2011
    @Garth2011 5 років тому +1

    Big question. What about the right side? Wouldn't it be fair to say the right secondary tensioner is also plastic and on the verge of breaking? Also, Isn't it also possible that the plastic that broke away ended up in the area of the primary chain sprocket and likely be a good candidate to replace all four chains because they stretch at some point? Seems that there could also be plastic primary tensioners that might also be suspect to too early wear and failure. What does Ford recommend when the engine has all plastic and is experiencing failures?

    When u took off spark plugs where they back?

    • @GrandTouringConcepts
      @GrandTouringConcepts  6 років тому

      Fabian Ayon the sparkplugs were not unusually fouled, they were in fact original Motorcraft piece as well. The timing being out by one tooth was only really enough to make a small impact on power, not quite enough to really impede exhaust performance. Left unchecked of course, the likeihood long term of damage is high. Thanks for commenting! -Darren

      I have low compression on cylinders 5-8 can that be that the time is wrong?

    • @GrandTouringConcepts
      @GrandTouringConcepts  6 років тому

      Fabian Ayon low compression on one bank may suggest and issue with camshaft timing. Are the compression numbers across that bank all similar to each other? A better test would be a leak down, which would identify the sealing of each cylinder. If you have a "good" test results with a leakdown it would suggest a cam timing or other issue before opening the engine. Of course if the leakdown results are poor, or the compression test result vary wildly from cylinder to cylinder there may be a more serious issue to investigate.

    • @fabianayon2105

      The about the same but when i scan the check engine code it gives me low compression on cylinder 7

  • @lg864

    Besides a knocking noise, do bad tensioners cause other symptoms? My 02 v8 LS has a rough idle, misses and hesitated while driving at all speeds, CEL scan shows bank 1 & 2 running lean but no misfires. I’ve changed my coils and plugs and still not better. Could my issue be this?

    • @carlmonroe9267
      @carlmonroe9267 5 років тому

      Luke Garner did you ever resolve this?

    • @lg864
      @lg864 5 років тому

      Carl Monroe I pulled the valve covers and took a look. Everything seemed fine, my tensioners were already the metal ones. So I drained the radiator and replaced the intake manifold gaskets and also valve cover gaskets. Put it all back together and put some KSeal in the coolant. Haven’t had any problems since, gas mileage is better too. If you’re having similar issues, let me know and I’ll do my best to help. I have workshop manual stuff I could send you.

      Lg can you help me out w the work shop manual stuff? I have to replace the tensioner on 05 LS v8 and all the videos are great but they all start w the vehicle already taken apart. Kind of need a step by step. I am having trouble getting things out of the way to get to the valve cover

    • @Garth2011
      @Garth2011 5 років тому +1

      Valve cover gaskets "O" rings need replaced to prevent oil seepage in the spark plug wells which cause the coils to ground out vs. fire the spark plug. The computer will still think the coils are igniting the plugs. Common problem with this engine as were the coils and many folks got confused which problem was causing spark failure, the oil or the coils. Fix the oil leakage issue first...then the coils if problems still exist. Not an easy fix, much labor involved however, the valve cover gasket sets have been improved since 2001/2002 were built. Felpro would be a good brand to use.
