- Mark McGwire, often referred to as Big Mac, forever altered the landscape of America’s pastime. In 1998, McGwire and Sammy Sosa’s thrilling pursuit of home run history captivated fans around the globe. The spotlight followed this duo every night during this storybook season that included numerous tape measure shots. Mark’s compact swing, brute strength, and timely hitting allowed him to break a hallowed record. Before attaining legendary status, he and Jose Canseco formed the iconic Bash Brothers tandem with the Oakland Athletics. Unfortunately, McGwire’s legacy was tarnished by steroid use, casting a shadow over his achievements. Once a surefire Hall of Famer, gate-keeping voters have delayed his entrance into Cooperstown.

Video idea: "the insane prime of alfonso soriano."
I agree with this one.
The insane outfield jump catches of routine pop flies of Alphonso Soriano!
Mr. 40/40 club! 😎
I like it
I still want 3B 9 Matt Williams
Dudes so slept on
He’d be considered 1 of thee greatest hitters of all time if not for injuries .
He was the 1st Dude on pace to break Marris & Ruth 60 HR marks
& He was on pace twice before Mgwire , Sosa, Griffey any of them but then getting injured and also the 94 lockout season Him & Grif were both tearing it up .
9 Matt Williams needs His 💐
For sure. He could rake
Made 3 World Series with 3 different teams and Won 1 .
YES PLEASE!
If it wasn't illegal when he played, he should be in
I agree. Bud Selig knew of it & encouraged it. Still have to have the talent like Big Mac did
Yeah, but I think it was illegal. Back in 90's if the cops caught you with or taking steroids without a doctors prescription. You could get in trouble. Think they were considered a class 3.
@@robtierney5653 who cares? lol
@@robtierney5653 Wasnt the andro McGwire taking over the counter stuff?
@@BatFan1yes. We used to walk in Gnc and get it. They were called pro hormones. They were legal until 2005. Stuff was awesome.
The most impressive home run hitter I've ever seen. He hit the longest homers in like half the stadiums in the MLB.
Steroids are a helluva drug
Same. I know about the roids but he and canseco were hitting fuckin moon shots. McGwire was truly one of the best ive ever seen. Arod too imo. When they connected it was over 💯🥶
I don't think most people realize how significant the most HRs / PAs statistic really is.. essentially the greatest pure homerun hitter of all time in his prime, by a handful of measures.
Man I can't tell you how much I love these "Insane Prime" videos you do! My brother and I always look forward to them, and I tell everyone I know about your channel. Excellent work! 🤝
That means so much to hear, thank you for the kind words! I appreciate your support of the channel, and for spreading the word about the insane prime series 🙌

The insane prime of Eddie Murray but it’s just his entire career
He did it, man!
ua-cam.com/video/ruqihJ54-y8/v-deo.html
Eddie Murray was great. One of those underrated players that flew under the radar, but was consistent enough to put up good numbers his whole career. Every team he was on was lucky to have him.
I love Beverly Hills Cop!
@@poindextertunes
(inward Eddie Murphey laugh)
Have you ever seen the comparison between Murray and Palmeiro's numbers? Like freakishly identical.
I remembered going to a game at old Tiger stadium as a kid. Mark Mcguire was the star attraction as his team was playing... he wasn't, as was hurt again 😢 but he did come out for batting practice and managed to hit one over the roof in left. Made everyone's day.. 😮
Day 27 of asking for Ted Williams
Yes!
Give it up, it's not going to happen. Don't you watch this guy's videos, he shows highlights of all the players he does videos on. There is not that much footage of ted Williams highlights out there
Never stop believing. Keep asking! It will happen.
its beyond his paygrade lol
Still a hall of famer as far as I'm concerned, especially since the substances in question weren't illegal while he was playing. Forgot how dominant his rookie campaign was too...random suggestion but I'd love to see a Carlos Delgado video, really unsung player of that era
They WERE illegal while he was playing. They just didn’t have mandatory testing for them.

Another excellent installment of content from Cam23!🎉🎉
Great video bud, it was a wonderful trip down memory lane! I wasnt even a teenager yet when the homerun race happened yet I remember it so vividly! Cant wait for the next video, keep up the amazing work!
Thank you Chris! I'm glad this video was able to provoke some memories. I feel like after making this I somehow have implanted memories that I do not have. It's so nostalgic looking back to this era of baseball!
I love how you talk about different eras of baseball players, from roberto clemente to someome like todd Helton is amazing. I cant believe how good your videos are! A Bob Gibson vid would be amazing!
Thank you so much Sergio, it means a lot to hear that! I think it's important to cover different legends from different eras of the game, when and where I can. Obviously, limited footage makes that difficult sometimes but it's always worth it to honor the all-time greats
Love to see a video about my favorite player gary sheffield. So vastly underrated Thanks!
Thank you so much for the super! Sheff will definitely get a video one of these days ⚾️
thanks for this @Cam 23 I was one of the ones who requested this in your intro. Also loved the griffey and pujols ones you did.
Thank you, I appreciate you supporting the content!
The most dominate right handed power hitter of All-time-BIG-MAC!!!
I think it’s time Andrew Jones’s prime needs a recap
Great video!
Thank you!
The one thing that made me angry about McGwire wasnt his sterioid use (everybody knew he was juicing; it was pretty obvious lol), but MLBs willingness to take advantage of his growing popularity only to take everything away from him later on because of the steroids they already knew he was taking. They get to keep the money they made because of him and Mark gets nothing. That was one of the reasons I stopped watching baseball in the 2000s. But I still love it enough to watch videos like this, so thanks, Cam23 :D
McGwire made $75,000,000 in salaries over his career. He was not left with “nothing”.
@@matthewbolin9646
I meant that his legacy was destroyed. He was dragged through court, his chance of getting into the HoF was ruined; I know hes still rich, but after doing the things he did and bringing a much needed boost to the popularity of baseball, thats a small comfort. Once he retired and MLB didnt need him anymore, they just threw him under the bus.
I went to a Giants vs Cardinals game during this era. Watching McGwire and Bonds take BP was incredible. The sound of the crowd after each bomb was incredible to witness.
Imma need you to cover Lance Berkman, Aramis Ramirez, Tom Glavine, and Jeff Kent for this series, man. Great content.
Thank you for supporting this series, it means a lot!
I have him in my HOF, he was never tested therefore he wasn't trying to cheat a test. He led the nation in home runs at USC, he led MLB in homers his rookie season. He was the true definition of the power hitter. I just thought the A's should have won more rings than that one. But they got beat, those A's teams were stacked.
The Insane Prime of Mark McGwire…..better Baseball through chemistry.
Still waiting for "The INSANE Primes of Barry Bonds" That titling is necessary.
“PrimeS.” I like that subtlety. The plural. The pre and post-steroid Bond primes. Yes, I’d like to hear about both.
Mark McGwire absolutely deserves to be in the HoF! Steroids were a part of baseball in that era, and were not against the rules. I still despise Henry Waxman to this day!
Uh, yeah, they *were* against the rules
Uh no…they weren’t. Do some research
Just another epic video ❤
I appreciate the kind words!
I keep looking back on Jeters career and I think you’d do a great job telling his story.

Thank you for watching!
I watch all your videos and have had a great time with your content, thank you. As unpopular as he is I’d like to see a deep dive on Barry Bonds. Not so much bc of the one year he crossed the 40+ homer line or the 762 lifetime, but bc of the 500/500. It’s an insane combo that’s only been achieved once and PEDs or not, that’s impressive.
I'm really glad to hear that. I appreciate you supporting the channel!
I wanted to kick off the PED age with McGwire but Bonds is a must, he's on the short list
Video idea. Prime Pudge Rodriguez. Best defensive catcher of all time
Hey cam, I just want to say you're doing a really great job 👍. I'm even impressed that you're doing the steroid guys which should be in the Hall of Fame regardless of how we feel about all the aspects of what happened back in the 80s and 90s. There are some stuff that took place back in the 50s 60s and 70s when it comes to amphetamines and greenies. Hall of famers like Mike Schmidt and late Henry Aaron have once admitted to using. Sammy Sosa should be the next one, Pedro Martinez, Mike Piazza, Ivan Rodriguez, Tim raines, Alan Trammell, Jack Morris.
My middle name is David too. And I lived in Pomona for about 7 years. But that's not the point of this post. They haven't let him into the Hall of Fame yet? That is crazy.
That's actually a pretty cool coincidence! He's on my ballot if I was voting that's for sure. I agree with you, it's crazy he's not in yet
My dad worked for a company based in NY but him and many of his co workers would go to St. Louis pretty frequently for work during Mcgwire’s cardinals tenure. They naturally made friends with many of the people working in the office in St. Louis, one of the biggest topics of conversation being baseball. Long story short, the guys in St. Louis were surprised to receive a package containing a cheeseburger with syringes sticking out of it. It was clearly a memorable joke as the office in NY would receive something similar 10 years later when Aroid got busted.
And i need a video of jose canseco
Mac from 1996 to 1999 was crazy.
Video ideas:
A Rod prime (from 1996 to 2007, he hit 513 homeruns, 1300+ RBI, scored 1482 runs, slashed .308/.392/.585. Won 3 MVPs, an all star every year except one, 9 silver sluggers, 2 gold gloves. Just in an 11 year stretch. Ended his career with 696 homeruns despite missing an entire season because of the suspension and 2 seasons worth of games due to injuries).
Manny Ramirez from 1995 to 2006 slashed .318/.415/.606
Jim Thome's prime was insane.
Jose Bautista.
Jason Giambi.
Say what you will...watching the homerun derby at fenway park was amazing
Can you make a Jim Thome one?
If McGwire doesn't miss nearly all of '93 and '94 and a big chunk of 1995 with injuries and then tries to hold on as a DH in the American League after 2001 (imagine Mark as a veteran leader on a cheap contract with the Moneyball A's, he may have basically been late-career Pujols at that point but he could still mash and had above average OPS so he could've fit in) he probably breaks Aaron's home run record before Bonds
I think McGwires' right knee was shot, which is why he retired. It's hard to pivot on that knee and generate the power needed to hit the ball out. If he changed his swing to utilize more of his upper body strength, that probably would have injured his back.
Yes. At least another 70 to 80 HRs if he plays in 93 and 94.
That's when the ball changed and really started flying out of parks at a crazy rate.
Add another few late career years as an AL DH, and he could have cracked 700 HRs.
Injuries unfortunately have ruined potential bids for some of the most incredible baseball records. Ken Griffey Jr. is #1 on that list for me
Well steroids mess with your joints. To much weight/mass/muscle gained to fast. So he only can blame himself. And without the juice he wouldn’t have made it. Watching him and Sosa battle that year was fun but deep down we all knew seeing a sacred record be crushed as by not one but 2 people was icky and wrong. Him lying to congress and going on offense was pathetic. Andro was legal and he took it. Just admit it. Instead of breaking a record that’s important to real fans then hugging Maris family. I used to rush to get the paper as a kid to check home run Leaders now who gives a fk.
@Vontastic80sbaby1 he's admitted it like 18 times now? What else do you want from the guy?
Personally, I never fault these guys for denying it. Because admitting it never buys them one iota of goodwill or ease from anyone. In fact it usually makes it worse, bc now the writers will call you an "admitted cheater (or insert other super loaded moralistic term) " and write how your apology wasn't anywhere near good enough and your only sorry you got caught, etc.
It's all about making these guys grovel and knocking them down a few pegs.
No one ever asks these guys " Did you do steroids" in good faith. It's always designed to humiliate the player, by either labeling them a liar when they deny it, or an" admitted drug cheat" in the rare instance they do.
So if I was McGwire or one of these guys I would feel no obligation or need to admit to or apologize for anything.
Say what you want about steroid users, but you cannot deny the impact they had on the game in the 90s. And in the case of McGwire and Sosa, they revitalized baseball when it had been dying after the strike (and it was pretty damn fun to watch, too)
People forget that McGwire was in fact a pretty damn good baseball player, not just a home run hitter. He's in my personal HOF.

Late this week, never got my notification.
Do you think he ever had a season in the bigs when he wasn't on the juice? As its not like he was hitting 15-20 then exploded 49 as a rookie is a bit suspicious no?
Put McGwire in. Andro was legal at the time, and he came clean at any rate. They saved baseball.
I can’t agree. Hear me out. I grew up a Oakland As fan. Base brothers. Bay Area huge baseball fan. Was at the game when Jose Canseco got traded. While he was in the batting circle. They announced he’d been traded to Texas. Marks Rookie season was legendary. But his down season whole going thru that divorce. *If you remember his home run race season vs Sosa his son being there was a major theme. But Marks resurgence was totally roids. Ankles and knees ended his career which is a side affect of usage. Bonds and Clemens had HOF careers before steroids. Barry could’ve retired after Pittsburgh and Roger after Boston when they clean and still made it. MM now way. Plus him lying to congress and acting like Jose & Him never interacted when Jose was shooting him up is clown s**t. He’s memorable to us if you seen him but shouldn’t be remembered or immortalized. Players who went from great to insane should get in with an asterisk. But Mark ain’t one of those guys. Saint Louis should be celebrating Bob Gibson Ozzie Smith Albert Pujols not Mark. That’s why they renamed 70 from Mark McGuire to Mark Twain. Andro was legal he should’ve admitted he used. But him tryna lie and act like he broke the most important stat in sports *at that time* home runs then hugging Maris kids is scummy. Roger lost his hair and bleed for that record and Mark destroyed it on bullshit.
Those injuries are also just a result of being big. Human ankles and knees aren't much stronger just because a person is big. Bigger guys in every sport stay hurt once they get a little older. Did the roids contribute? Possibly. I don't know what he was on but they certainly made him bigger which alone put more stress on his joints
Also, we already know that it's very likely guys like Pudge, Piazza, Bagwell , and Ortiz weren't natural. It didn't keep them out and we have no idea how much it contributed to their careers
Bullshit
Imagine if MLB The Show actually gave McGuire a two handed swing for his 80s batting stance and swing
Can we see a Alfonso Soriano video?
PLEASE CAN YOU DO A VIDEO ON GARY SHEFFIELD AND CHILI DAVIS THAT WOULD BE AWESOME ONE GUY HIT 500 HOME RUNS AND SHOULDV'E BEEN VOTED INTO THE HALL OF FAME AND THE OTHER GUY WAS AN IMPRESSIVE DESIGNATED HITTER WHO HIT 350 HOME RUNS AND IS 7TH ALL TIME AMOUNG SWITCH HITTERS IN HOME RUNS.

I recall how McGwire's BA slipped to .230 for several years then all the way down to .201 w/ about 20+ HR's.
Already he was looking washed-up in his late-20's. But the next year he rebounded to 42 HR's and a .268 average. Injuries curtailed his performance the next two years before storming back in a big way. At the time it just seemed like wow this is the guy we all expected to see after his early returns and now that he's finally healthy again this is the result...THEN we learned what really happened.
Babe Ruth was messed up in 1925, he could have taken steroids too but they weren't around, so either way Mcgwire had an unfair advantage, and Ruth got 714 anyway despite many disadvantages....shorter seasons, 5 years of dead ball era (1914-1919).
What’s fascinating to me is that if we ignore the steroid usage (which we should), mark’s overall war is…much less than you expect. Like BY ALOT. I recall going to check up on mark’s career and it was only 62.1. His highest war in a season was about a 7. It’s high but not exactly that much. His jaws (which tries to be more specific on the position) he is below. I mean really. So what did it? How can I guy with. Near .400 obp be things…pedestrian? Defense. I mean it’s really bad. Which is shocking since being a first basemen is suppose to be easier for a big slugger.
So this actually makes mark hard to evaluate. Is he a HOF? Well by offensive stats yes, but his post season was surprisingly not good, and his defense really lowers bar. He really is below the standards on paper but is that enough? His offense is jsut too good much like Gary Sheffield. I’d say he’s prob borderline much better than Sammy Sosa overall.
Cecil Fielder? 🙏
The home runs have to do with the juiced balls and the new offensive friendly stadiums rather than the steroids themselves
Honestly the steroids actually may have made McGwire’s career worse because he kept getting injured and going on the DL
Yeah sure Which is why Pujols and Thome Hit 89 Hr in 02 and 94 HR in 06 respectively and were later bested by Trouts 97 and Judges 123....It was the stadiums You see! Bonds going from 40+ to 73 had zero to do with roids, never mind the fact that his head got bigger but it was all because of Jacobs Field, Camden Yards, Coors and Joe Robbie!! and all just happened to have been leaking radiation.😂
Exactly! Thank you!
@@pycellesbeard9728 Huge difference
Mark McGwire took stuff that was legally over the counter at GNC over the time while Barry Bonds was literally taking stuff that was making him a science experiment of sorts and was involved with a company that was under federal investigation
@@ohsoedgy6888 LMFAO! McGwire has openly admitted to taking roids from as early as the 89 season and numerous other times throughout the 90's including 93 and 98, which totally shocked everyone, did new stadiums like Coors cause a few HR here and there for him? probably, but the Roids obviously helped a tad more. It really is a shame because sans roids He was probably still a HOF Who would've maybe approached 500 HR clean but that just wasn't good enough for him.
@@ohsoedgy6888Wrong. McGwire was taking GNC stuff IN ADDITION to roids. Canseco was shooting roids into Mac’s ass in Oakland, pretending it was B12 if any press inquired.

Ive never really watched Mark's numbers play out this way. I can go back and watch a majority of his career. So the numbers have mever mattered. Nobody his clutch Homers like Mark McGwire. I dont think you can objectively say, in the unbias, that Mark isnt the second greatest Home Run hitter aside from Babe Ruth. Yes, you can look at steroids and all. But, honestly, he chose to retire after the season if glory, he was doing normal things for the time, and saved baseball from a ghoulish fade into obscurity. The game is yhree true out ome because of the 1998 season. It changed our game. He was that good. Hes admitted wrong doing, won a World Series as a BATTING coach. He is a top 15 power hitter of all time and the greatest of the home run hitters. Come on man. Plus, he was the MVP in 1998, the voters didn't follow the national game. Just the region they covered. Soap box over. The man is a top 50 offensive player ever and one of the most prolific producers to ever step in to an big league box.
Mark gets a lot of flack and hate, but the reality is he was pivatol in the history of the league. Big Mac made life long baseball fans out of many of us in our 30s. My parents were finished with the MLB after the '94 strike. Big Mac brought my family back to the ball park. The MLB and fans cherry pick which PED users they wish to villafied. Guys like Ortiz get placed in the HOF, yet Big Mac will always be looked at as a stain on the league.
I agree 100%, 1998 saved MLB's reputation and restored fans' interest. You saying that reaffirms the truth to that claim!
Not putting some of the best players ever into the HOF is a joke.
PED SHOULD BE IN
ESPECIALLY THE GUYS BEFORE IT WAS EVEN BANNED
THEY DID NOT BREAK ANY RULES
@7:33 the two fans in the stands (were in the stands.) Wtf?
Dave Stuart or oral hershiser or Dave justice or Greg Olson or bo Jackson or Rickey Henderson idk.
he desversv to be in the hall of fame. but look at how it took mark to get big look at 1987 how skinny he was. i guess from 1987 to i guess around 1995 is when he started to get big. so about at least 8 years it took him to get big compare to bonds. it look like bonds grew over night
Babe Ruth💪⚾️
The insane prime of Paul Molitor
Big Mac was something else. He was like Mark McGwire on steroids.
While it's up in the air about letting people who have used steroids in the HoF or not. I do think the accomplishments themselves should.
Baseball may not have the place it does in the USA without the '98 HR chase between Sosa and McGwire, steroids or not.
That time period is a stain on baseball. What stinks is the apologists and McGwire/Bonds etc. lovers puking out how "everyone was on PED's then" which is a slight to all those who didn't cheat and made the grade w/ their natural gifts.
@@GizmoBeach We don't even know if baseball would be around for you to call that time period "a stain on baseball" if it didn't happen in the first place.

PEDs do nothing to improve you’re skill, hitting mechanics, vision, pitch selection, etc. it definitely makes a difference in your power but that’s it. You can take all the PEDs you want to but if you don’t have the skill it’s not gonna make much of a difference. Like you can upgrade an engine all you want to get the most power but without tires it doesn’t matter if it’s 300HP or 800HP it’s not going anywhere.
Did PEDs effect the numbers in the end, I think it obvious they did but to what extent we will never really know. PEDs or not it doesn’t change the fact that McGwire was a great hitter.
