Absolutely brilliant. What a gem of a video. I don't have the money to pay a shop to replace the radiator -- after seeing this video, I realize that I can absolutely do this job myself. Thank you for the thorough explanation. Great job.
I just got quoted $500 dollars to replace Radiator. After watching your video I feel very confident in replacing it myself. You illustrate and explain each step so clearly and your video work shows the exact work area with good lighting. I am completely grateful for this video! I had eye surgery and have been out of work so this is gonna save me some money I don't have. Great Job! cheers
First time changing a radiator for me and watched this video twice and it took me about two hours but saved 200 dollars that the mechanics quoted me! Excellent video! Keep up the awesome work!
Excellent video! Made changing my daughter's radiator as easy as changing oil. Pep Boys wanted $300+ just for labor (3+ hours for "professional" labor, really?!?!?!?) so thank you for saving me a few bills :) And yes, to agree with another commenter, you do not have to remove the fan housing completely, just take the four bolts out and push it back some- more than enough space.
I learned this by accident...if the left and right radiator brackets that the radiator is hanging on are in good shape. Take the 4 corner bolts off that connect the two and slide the radiator out of the brackets. Take the new brackets off the new radiator and slide the new radiator between the brackets in the vehicle and bolt the corners back. Those corner bolts come off and on 100 times easier than the front bracket bolts through the grill, and you don't need swivel sockets/adapters. I live in Florida, so my brackets are rust free. Of course, if yours are rusty, or you just want the new ones on, then, this gentleman did a text book Toyota shop procedure. Great video!
Thank you! I've been a shade tree mechanic for years, but you introduced me to two new tools I never new I needed (line clamps and radiator fill funnel system). BamM, ordered from the devil (amazon) and they'll be here in time to change the radiator Saturday. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this video. It is so clear. You helped me to replace my radiator for my car. This is my first big work on my car. I'm so proud of myself. All thank to you! Much appreciated.
Hey man, this video is great. Super simple and it was instrumental when it came to me replacing the radiator in my 4Runner by myself. Thanks a lot man.
It's been a pleasure to watch your channel grow and to be a part of this journey as a subscriber. Keep it up Peter. You are doing all the right things on this channel!
Great video. The only thing I did different was I didn't unhook the fan shroud. After I unscrewed it I was able to push it back enough to remove the radiator. Amazing detail in your video. I did this in about two and a half hours but would have taken five without your video.
Lol I wanted to know how to remove the clips holding the grill to access those radiator support bolts!! I like how you went thru the openings available!! And the climate in California compared to north-east Canada is night and day for the vehicles!! My '97 is nowhere as clean as this one!! Thanks for the vid!!
When I replaced my radiator at 230K miles, I removed the air pockets by just having the vehicle running and leaving the radiator cap off and kept adding more coolant until the vehicle reached normal operating temp and nothing was bubbling anymore, but your way seems bulletproof! Thanks for the reminder video as I have to possibly do this to another 3rd gen 4Runner soon since the vehicle still has the original radiator with close to 300K miles on the clock! Amazing!!! Also, it's a good idea to replace the thermostat and gasket while doing this job and remember, the jiggle valve must be at 6pm position!
Just came here to comment that this is a wonderful video. Will be tackling some maintenance items since I am staying at home because of the coronavirus and this was on my list. Thank you!
Great video!! Thank you so much for the great quality. Question, tho. I have a 2004 with a V8 with the dreaded rusted hard cooler lines that run across the cross member. Is there a diagram that show which hose goes to which hard line for the transmission oil cooler? Thanks!!!
Another perfect video. I was wondering if raising the front about a foot higher than the rear can get the same results? I usually park mine with rear wheels down the curb and front wheels up on 2x8 boards.
A couple of additional points here when changing to a new radiator. Flush your system with distilled water. Meaning run the engine with at least two cycles of water. After draining check the color of the water for how clean it looks. After that add the red stuff and if it’s the concentrated one use distilled water, never tap water.
Great video on the removal and installation process! I really appreciate it. However, one thing I noticed. The coolant that poured from the system was yellow. And I don't remember hearing you state that you fully flushed the system before adding the red Toyota coolant. Also, the coolant didn't seem that it was of the pre mixed 50/50 variety. Since I didn't see the system fully flushed, aren't you running a risk of mixing two different types of coolant in the system now? The system is known to hold almost a quart and a half in the heater core even during a full flushing process. From what I've seen, it takes almost 3-4 full flushes with distilled water to actually get most of the old coolant out.
Thanks! Just to be clear though, when you say "gel" do you mean they'll mix fine? Or do you mean that they'll actually turn to a gel like composition? Just making sure. I'm going to do the full flush method. I currently have green in mine but I want to switch it back to red with the new radiator.
Great video, I'm sorry, this may be a dumb question, when filling antifreeze to radiator after installing new radiator, you used the Toyota anti freeze long life, can the same Toyota product only 50/50 be used to fill it? Or is 50/50 only for the extension coolant jug?
A clear funnel allows you to see the bubbles easily when you burp the cooling system especially when you rev the engine to higher RPMs white seated in the driver’s seat. It took me about 30 minutes to burp the cooling system of air.
I got a little hole underneath the radiator cap should I get a new radiator or it be fine? I notice when I accelerate some comes out only if I push on the gas and or it’s full of coolant y then it comes out ? Thoughts anyone
More videos please!! My emergency brake does nothing, a couple of my friends with 3rd gens have the same issue. Can you do a video on how to adjust that please?
I finished the radiator installation and the there's transmission fluid pouring out of the trans pan. Could I have hooked up the lines backwards? I noticed a red and black cap on the radiator out of the box, but don't remember how I unhooked it.
What is the name of the different position extension wrench at the 5:23 minute mark to remove the radiator out of the vehicle? And where did you buy that? I'm also assuming all 3rd generation 4Runners are built the same...I have a 2001 4Runner SR5. Thank you again!
It's just a regular socket wrench + extension + universal joint. Any decent set will have all of those parts and more but you can go to any home depot or auto store and buy the universal joint individually. it's a life saver on a toyota
Thank you for the fantastic video! Would you mind posting some links to where you got your radiator AND THAT COOL ADAPTOR TOOL! I have never seen that before. Thanks so much and please keep up the videos!
Toyota Maintenance I ordered one off Amazon for $20. It seems pretty universal. I wish I saw your video before I started on this project. Thanks, good video by the way
Hi boss again! Thanks a lot for your great videos. I have a request to you: could you make a video showing some automatic transmission issues. My 2003 4runner shakes when I change from P to R or from N to R. I mean, when I put the lever on R, the engine shakes strong. Also, when I want to take a curve on a street, when I slow down the speed, the gearbox automatically changes to first speed and after the courve when I press the accelerator the engine makes high revolution and changes to next gear but in my opinion is not necessary. I hope to get some opinion from you. regards!
Hi Anthony, my 1997 4 runner does the same thing and I believe it to be my universal joints on my drive shaft. I’ll be replacing them tomorrow and will comment back if it resolves the problem.
Great video Peter. Thanks. The grill was different however I got the radiator out. My 1999 Toyota had a replacement filter from Autozone a B1755 that I installed. There were 3 choices mine was a 22 and 5/8 inch. There was a 20 and 18 inch choice. Sadly the website said width and it was actually the height. Not of the radiator core (aluminum metal) but the rear cowling size. Good luck and thanks.
Please do a video on the check engine code 0430! UA-cam needs one to help being scammed into buying an expensive exhaust system just to pass emissions inspection.

Just changed the radiator in my 1999 4Runner SR5. So much easier with your video. Simple to follow but thorough. Thanks!
Just found your channel today. I have a 1999 4runner SR5 V6. Your videos are very much appreciated.
glad to hear that....

Thank you for the video and walk through! Informative and simple.

Instructions were perfect. Replaced the radiator in my 1999 Limited 4Runner in just over 2 hours as an amateur who doesn't work on cars much. Thanks!
you are welcome, good job !
Jeremiah Roy how much money you save?
Thanks so much for sharing perfect I did it on my 2000 follow your steps.
Good job, my friend! Your instructions are detailed and clear. Thanks!

God job, thanks for your video.
Love the video I have a 2000 Toyota 4Runner where do I get that funnel you used to put the antifreeze into the radiator?

Link to the radiator to buy and funnel?

Excellent video, very clear explanation ! thank you
Super helpful. Thank you!
you are welcome....
That was incredible ...a must to watch...how to do it the easy way!
yes
Did you flush out the radiator or just drained what came out of the nozzle and lower hose? Thank you!
@toyota maintenace, how much coolant did you use to refill this radiator?
Excellent video! Thanks. I will subscribe!
If I'm doing a flush do I drain the transmission coolant too? Thanks!
THANK YOU...Very good video

Do you need to mix the Toyota long life coolant with water?
What's the best route to take for buying a rad for my 3rd gen 4 runner? I,want to replace it soon!
Awesome video
Great video sir
Thank you...
Thanks for sharing this
do you have to turn on the heater to start bleeding air from the system?
I got a little hole underneath the radiator cap should I get a new radiator or it be fine? I notice when I accelerate some comes out only if I push on the gas and or it’s full of coolant y then it comes out ? Thoughts anyone
Ассаляму Алейкум
Спасибо тебе добрый человек
Все ясно и чётко хотя я английский не знаю
Did you add more transmission oil too?
More videos please!! My emergency brake does nothing, a couple of my friends with 3rd gens have the same issue. Can you do a video on how to adjust that please?
Nikko Azan I have the same issue on my gen 2
Excellent! 🙌🏻
Where did you get the new radiator from ?
Awesome thank you
I finished the radiator installation and the there's transmission fluid pouring out of the trans pan. Could I have hooked up the lines backwards? I noticed a red and black cap on the radiator out of the box, but don't remember how I unhooked it.
Sounds like it...
Thanks man!
you are welcome
Is that just a denso radiator?
Is the original radiator made out of plastic? The top of the old one almost looks like some type of fiberglass.
- Thanks for the video!
Where did you buy that funnel adapter?
What is the name of the different position extension wrench at the 5:23 minute mark to remove the radiator out of the vehicle? And where did you buy that? I'm also assuming all 3rd generation 4Runners are built the same...I have a 2001 4Runner SR5. Thank you again!

Radiator from dealer.....adaptor from part stores like Napa......
Thank you sir.
you are welcome
Thanks!
How much time should it take to fill and purge the radiator with the funnel? Thanks in advance
I do approximately 15 minutes...
Where did you get that funnel adaptor? I'm have trouble getting the coolant in.
you can get it at auto parts stores...
Toyota Maintenance I ordered one off Amazon for $20. It seems pretty universal. I wish I saw your video before I started on this project. Thanks, good video by the way

Doing this today

when service like that will be available...
maybe replace the O2 sensor(s) before replacing the cat?
I need that funnel!!!
I agree....everybody needs one !
Dildo Swaggins , Wallmart $2:50
Come on people is not a car it's a truck it has a truck frame
Never use plastic/aluminum radiators.
I have a manual and my fan shroud is one piece. :(
fyi ( for anyone with the same thing) you can still get the radiator out without taking it out . just more difficult
still have to take out the screws s it is loose
Easy peasy they need this type download in the new matrix movie
