Korg Poly-800 - Stringy padded things (some more patches/presets)

  • I was briefly in possession of another Korg Poly-800 this month, which I only had time to use once, but I created a bunch of mostly string pad-type sounds, as I was originally aiming to re-record a couple of old uploads (links below):
    • Korg Poly-800,Doepfer ...
    • Korg Poly-800 & Doepfe...
    • Korg Poly-800 Mk1 some...
    The Poly-800 was a strange synthesizer; whilst being an 8-voice polyphonic synth (or 4 voices with 2 oscillators per voice) it only had one analog filter shared across all voices, which was limiting, but could produce some interesting musical results.
    Buyers beware: Both my Poly800's had the common dead motherboard battery problem for this particular model, and lost the preset storage memory after power-off. On my first one it only seemed to retain them with power batteries constantly installed (I didn't have batteries the second time), but this isn't advisable for extensive periods of time due to potential leakage.
    Enable subtitles/captions for comments/info about some of the patches.
    tomorrowthecur...
    Geek stuff: recorded using AUM on an iPad, Audio Damage EOS2 reverb, via an iConnectAUDIO4 interface. Filmed on a LUMIX GH4 and GX7.

    Well finally! A video of the poly 800 that sounds good! Thanks so much for not just playing lame 80’s cover band sounds. Mine comes in the mail today. Mark II, super excited again thanks to this video.

      Thanks, glad you liked it. My keyboard skills are almost 0, so I couldn't play that kind of stuff anyway, hehe. I hope you enjoy your Poly 800.

    Lets go folks..If fan appreciation was the coin of the realm than DreamsOfWires/Tomorrow The Cure would be huge...But it doesn't pay the bills! I just purchased the One Synth album, this is something EVERYONE should own. Let's keep music a viable option for this truly gifted composer and artist! Please buy his work, we cannot afford to lose this magic!

    For what it's worth, you have the talent to make recordings and videos with minimal gear. My videos are all made with my phone and some cheap effects, and I've recorded several tracks using a single synth such as a Volca Bass and small digital recorder with built-in effects. It's limiting but manageable. I know next to nothing about making real videos so I just wing it and use Windows Movie Maker or similar freeware to edit stuff. I have bought your music off of Bandcamp and appreciate your work. Hang in there and don't give up, you'll find a way to carry on.

    • @DreamsOfWires
      @DreamsOfWires  5 років тому +1

      Thank you. I just wing it too, but I keep thinking of ways to improve things and give it a shot, even if I don't know what I'm doing. It's satisfying finding your own way to get around problems and limitations though, when the result gives you what you wanted from it, or near enough. Thanks for your ongoing support, it means a lot.

    I really enjoyed your presentation, you program the same style of sounds I do. I owned an original 800 for many years from the mid 80's to the early 90's and more recently a MK11. I love both but the MK11's digital delay is quite magical as it is oddly phase inverted on one channel which throws the sound out into the third dimensional ether, but phase cancels if played mono (but why record or listen in mono if it sounds this great) The main difference between the 800's sound over other polys of the day (ie Juno's) is two elements that make up the sound, firstly how the saw wave is created with square wave additive synthesis and secondly with its paraphonic filter. A very unique and beautiful synthesizer.

    • @DreamsOfWires
      @DreamsOfWires  5 років тому +2

      Thanks for the information. I've never tried a MkII, but the delay sounds more intriguing now, especially when used with the sequencer for example. I like the chorus in the MkI - it's not particularly remarkable, but it's more appealing to use as a feature of the instrument rather than using an external one.

    I was about to let go of my Poly 800 until I watched this video which have made me change my mind. Your take on this synth is so amazing and I really am amazed by the fact that your video of it’s sequencer had also made me bought the Poly 800 on the last couple of years before! I pray your channel survive and to many more great videos of this beautiful machines!

    • @DreamsOfWires
      @DreamsOfWires  5 років тому +2

      Thank you very much for saying that, it's much appreciated. Like most instruments, it's got its sweet spots in my opinion. I think the 800 is better for it's unusual qualities, rather than when compared to most other polys, which are mostly too expensive for the majority of us.

    Greetings to all, someone who can help me with my korg poly 800, connect a charger, I think it has a lot of voltage and it turned off and does not turn on anymore, what happened? could it be the protective diode at the input? Would the internal card be burned because of that? any trick remedy or solution here?

    I'm lucky enough to still own my MkII with reverse keys. It's so nice to run it up once in a while just for the great sound. And to prance round the room using it as a keytar all 80s-like.

    Love your work, great video!
    Concerning profitability...it is very tough I’m sure. I’m sorry that it is causing financial stress for you to pursue your creative drive, I share in that pain...
    Have you ever tried to sell sound packs / patches? Either by being contracted by a synth manufacturer or by selling them on your own?
    Maybe making kontakt sample packs / samples instruments?
    I feel like your patches are inspiring to those that watch it and smaller impulse buys of soundbanks can add up
    No personal experience in it, but just a thought!

    • @DreamsOfWires
      @DreamsOfWires  5 років тому

      Thank you, that's nice to know.
      Yeah, that's the problem, most people are in the same boat. Websites rarely help as much as they could unless there's enough profit in it for them.
      Thanks for the suggestion, but I couldn't sell patches as I don't own any such instruments anymore, and I doubt a manufacturer would offer me any work. It's nice to know my sounds inspire some people though, hopefully to create their own sounds.

    • @DreamsOfWires

      It's only sound 4 or 8 notes simultaneously (depending on the preset), so it'll steal the first note when you play 5 or 9.

    This channel is unique in its approach. You can tell music means a lot to you and the way you present it is pure. The music and especially the outside footage match really well and the descriptions you write are personal. Remember, this is a tough genre to sell. I understand you would like to live off it, but I can see this is important to you in other ways and I mean that as the biggest compliment to your work.

    • @DreamsOfWires
      @DreamsOfWires  5 років тому

      Thank you very much, I'm really glad it comes across that way. My immediate problem isn't living off of it, but being able to afford to do it in the first place, particularly the UA-cam side of things. I'll write a community post or something soon to explain the background of what I do on my channel then it might make more sense.
