How to spool a spinning reel on line. Properly put line on a reel. Spool a reel with line in only a few minutes and fish with it right away. AndersFishing.com
Wow, as a new fisher I was really afraid to put line on, but this video helped me tremendously. 8 years later and your video is still helping people like me get into fishing! Thanks a bunch.
If you look at your spinning reel from behind and reel it actually is spinning counter clockwise. If you don’t want birds nests and twisted line you should be making sure the line is coming off the new spool counterclockwise and not clockwise
This video has quality that holds up tp this day, even as an amateur i can tell that this dudes got one of the best vids on this. And the positive ass energy was a plus. Appreciate it 12 years later man🙏
Don't fret.... Sometimes it's better that way. Not always.its more frustrating and sometimes damn near impossible... You'll learn that particular task better than if shown if you figure it out on ur own. Have a good one and Keep that tip up! 🙂
Tape on the knot was a good idea. I stick the label inside the spool with the line test info and date on it. If you write small you can can use the label several times.
Took me damn near 6 years to come across this and it has made my life with my spinning reels so much better. I have now subscribed. Keep up the great work!
I have been fishing for 50 years and the idea of using the sticker to cover the knot and hold the line on the real never occurred to me. This is a great tip. Thank you.
Taking something that seems simple, but really is complicated, and turning it into something simple is an amazing skill. I have been fishing for 30 years but NOW I know how to put line on a spinning reel. Amazing. Thanks.
It must be cool having the #1 video pop up when someone asks their phone "how to put line on a spinning reel". It's well deserved and exactly what I needed.
Cool to see someone else use the tape trick. I have been doing that for years and use blue painter tape. It also serves as a visual cue - when I see the blue, I know I am getting near the end of the line. Sometimes that it is not so easy to tell, especially if there is a fish on.
Not my first time spooling a reel, just watching videos for no reason. Probably not a kid anymore, but just loved watching this video, what a personality! If he was this cool spooling a reel, he must be cooler when reeling them in! Great video.
Thank you dude I’m 25 now and the last time I went fishing I was a kid and didn’t have to spoil my own rod so this was really helpful. Got my reel in a cup of warm water right now!
My felt washers are oiled . Warm water may wash it away , but they can be dried and oiled again . I spooled 100 yards of 17 lb.mono on a reel today with the label up and the line became badly twisted , so I took it out side and dropped the new line upright in the snow and filled my spool , seems to be fine . I'll be sure to toss the line out far with a lead weight and swivel before I use it to fish.
i have watched soooo many videos on how to do this and NOT 1 other person has ever mentioned the water!!!...AMAZING!!!!!!!.....and it really does work!!! THANK YOU!!!! great video!!!!!!!
Used to fish as a kid and young teen. Havent ever had to worry about these kinds of things til now! Got my license vouchers for next year and now I'm ready to get back out there thanks to you!:) subscribed!
This video has *SAVED* my ass!!! I had an absolute disaster last week when changing from a pre-spooled reel, to having a new rod and reel that I needed to spool myself. Everytime I was abput to cast, my line was springing off the spool and creating massive knots... i spent 6hrs rinsing and repeating the same issue and didn't know where I was going wrong!! These tips have saved me big time so thank you!
Thanks man. As an avid fisher man I get so pumped at the start of fishing season I rush through all the steps just to get out there as soon as possible. This video saved me from a lot of issues later on
I've started fishing at the age of 7 years old and I am 43 years old. Anyway in my years of fishing and putting line on my reel right. You're the first person who ever put tape on your real. never heard of it before and never seen it until now. Now that's pretty cool I definitely got to try that next time I do trout fishing and put line on my reel. Anyway just want to say thanks for sharing the tips. Also I enjoyed watching this video on UA-cam once again thanks.
shawn eldridge ... Wow 😲 You must really be excited that after all these years doing it wrong 😢 to finely know how to do it the correct way 👍🏻🤷🏻♂️😍 Lol 😂 🎣🎣🎣
Super helpful. Just got into fishing been using a piscifun line spooler to attach the line. I've seen dozens of videos on how to spool a line, from younger and much older anglers; and you're the only person who recommends the warm water technique. Makes perfect sense! Thanks buddy
Didn't know how many things I've been doing wrong all these years. Cannot wait to apply what I've learned. Already did the line on the reel with warm water. Thank you!!!
nice tip man. but here in greece we put the line in the first ring so you dont have to hold it with your thumbs. and under the first ring we use a warm towel.you hold the rod with the towel and the line goes through the towel to the reel.the memory breaks and you can put it as much tighter as you want. my tip.hope you understand what i mean. i wish good seas to you all and many fishes in your hooks. thanks again
First time taking my son fishing without a helper (2nd time ever!) and this video is perfect. Thank you Anders! You've given this cityfolk and his kid a fighting chance tomorrow :-)
Great presentation and straight to the point... I was looking to buy a loaded spinning wheel because I was afraid of the hassle around loading and handling the popping off part but you boosted my confidence. Thanks.
8 years ago and still helping folk out thank you much I didn’t know about the spool in water part I’m gonna try it right now and let yall know how it goes wish me luck heading out soon tight lines!
Thank you! Haven't had time to go fishing in 4yrs. Never had to rewind my reel before and this video explained everything perfectly! Can't wait to get on the water now! :)
Great tip about the warm water dip, I've had the nylon line jump out from the spool due to memory, made for a very unpleasant experience on the rocks. Will try the tip next time 👍.
Anders, thanx for the clear, simple way to spool my reel. Have taken a 22 year hiatus from fishing. Bought a small panfish boat and am purchasing all the accessories.
I'm 53. Just bought 300 in fishing gear. Just took up the sport. Will spooling my first reel. Thanks for your video. The reel dip may have saved me from making a mess of my first cast.
That was perfect for explaining it! Sometimes there will be one tiny detail not mentioned that’ll throw me off in demonstrations but that was so easy to understand
Had a new rod and reel sitting idle for years because I wasn’t sure how to spool it properly. This video gave me the confidence to give it a shot. Thanks!
Thanks for the how to video....simple and right on! Honestly, I have been doing this for years and knew everything you said already, but It's nice to refresh after years of people who aren't sure how to do it confusing the facts...lol. Anyway, Thanks so much!
Great video! I haven’t fished since I was in high school and never used this kind of reel before so this is helpful. Going to take my son fishing for the first time.
After viewing someone else's video and having an absolute devastation of a line nightmare wrangle inside the spinning parts of my reel, i will say that last tip was a lifesaver. Thank you
Not necessarily a rookie, got into it about 5 years ago but ive learned everything through trial and error and i dont think ive ever actually known the proper amount of line to put on and recently ive had major problems out of it by the time i go fishing and my reels get all screwed up. Thought it was because i bought cheap like so i went and bout expensive line and had the same thing happen so im not to stubborn to realize im probably doing something wrong
Uncalled for... just a useless sentence meant to be funny, that folks could probably do without reading it. Just say thanks instead maybe... You probably spent quite a bit of time trying to be the class clown and just ended up in the circus, without much joy in life other than trying to get people to give you some attention by using your endless witty abilities...Thanks, I'll always remember your comment about sticking your finger in the warm water...DUH...
Ive been fishing 50 years and came here cause i still can't remember how to turn the spool so the line doesn't twist.... you made it easy AND taught me a trick i never thought of(soaking the spool). KUDOS!
I'm not sure why i clicked this video, I've been spooling line for 25 years.... but I'm glad i did! For 25 years i would also tie the line around a tree and walk the line out, set the drag tight and reel myself back in 3 or four times lol. That hot water trick is awesome!
This is the best 'how to respool your reel' video I've seen, and I've watched a lot! Straight forward, great simple tips on how to keep the line tight, as well. Fantastic! Thanks for taking the time to record, edit, and share this.
I'm a single mom who has VERY limited fishing experience. My boys love to fish. Moved up to a spinning reel this year. Thanks so much for the video since I had no clue how to put line on it the correct way. Also, the tip to put it in the warm water is very appreciated.....I really do not like untangling line for 2 boys if it can be avoided.
Thank you for the line install tips as other commentators stated I just bought a new rod and reel after 20 plus years away from fishing and this really helped me
Your tutorial was the easiest to understand and I found a few helpful hacks along the way. I just returned to fishing after 5 years away during this quarantine for something to do. Somehow I had forgotten nearly all of the basics but your video helped me pick it up again quickly!
I haven't been fishing since I was like 11 or 12 years old. So every rod/reel I've ever used was either bought with the line already on it, or was set up by my dad. I just bought my first decent rod and reel today and this definitely helped me set it up. I didn't even know about the whole hot water thing and I was actually wondering what that little catch on the side of the reel was for. Now I know, thanks!
Rounds of applause for this. Baitcasting all my life and just bought my first spinning reel. Daunted by the new mechanism and how to spool it, but feel pretty good about stringing it up and hitting the lake now. Many thanks.
Label face up on the ground to match the spool direction, then soak in warm water to reset the line memory. So simple, but so effective and saves so much headache!
After the warm water just remember to make sure spool is dry and still has proper lube! I tend to let it air dry a few then just take some good reel oil add a drop or two in required spots and all is well otherwise this is the best how to video for the good old fashion way to spool up a reel on UA-cam
Man, I was ready to s***can my reels after putting some 12 lb test on 'em. I saw your vid and discovered I was adding line with the new line upside down on the ground. That coupled with your method of tying the line onto the reel before you start saved me from buying a new reel. Thanks brother...you need to teach!
01:56 Very subtle and he doesn't mention it, but he flips down the bail. Everyone should figure it out, but you know, there's always someone in the crowd (me).
Thank you very much. After several attempts I noticed you do not wind the line around every time you tied it. You just tied it a few times. I was spooling it around and then tied it and that was the problem. Thanks again! Greg
Been fishing with my dad for years! Moved across the country and besides the learning curve of fishing in a new location, 2 of my rods ran out of line and I didn't know if I just bought a new reel or what lol Thanks for the video! My old man will be proud haha
My dude, I just did this on my President reel and it worked like a charm. The warm water trick and the tape is a life- changer. When I switched to a spinning reel, I couldn't figure out why when I first would take it out on the lake it would jump right off. Thank you! Subbed!!
Michael Twigg do you mean that the warm water causes the line to explode, or do you mean that your son's line exploded and that you actually like this tip?
Pretty sure he means it just exploded off the spool. I bought a new rod and reel to keep in my truck yesterday morning. Spooled it up at the lake and first cast it did that. Was a PITA using it.
These comments are dumb. His line exploded before the warm water. That's actually a good idea because like he said it changes the lines memory fitting the spool better and normally resting in its shape
DO NOT PUT YOUR SPOOL IN WARM WATER!! I tried this and the warm water removed the grease from the inner spool and now it's constantly clicking and not turning correctly. If you want to heat the line, use a heat gun or hairdryer.
@@Impetuss Yeah I bought White Lithium grease and spraying it all the connection that connects the spool to the reel. It still gives me problems when fishing but it's useable. If I could go back in time I wouldn't have put it in hot water!
I’ve been fishing for 2 years now and haven’t caught a single thing. Anything I might be doing wrong? Edit: I caught my first fish a day later It was a largemouth bass 4lb
The video was good, but one key element you left out is to confirm that the line is at the top of the spool not at the bottom. That is a crucial element when loading your line. That can cause much grief and frustration for a new fisherman. Did anyone notice that, he said nothing about it, pretty key element, I guess if someone’s not watching closely enough they don’t realize that the line is tied on the top of the spool not on the bottom. Just sayin... other than that very critical item, the video is pretty decent.
Open the middle of the 500 pages book ,put the line inside, close the book and run the line thru it so you have pressure no need to use fingers.Put the book in front of the reel. *tip
I recommend changing brand of line! Not trying to be rude or know it all just passed experience with eagle claw line hasn't ever been good against medium to large fresh water fish! It's a old company and I respect them! Just much better line out like Berkley trilene has many great options spiderwire has many great options and many mono options for reels that can handle the original spiderwire anyways just wanted to recommend it so your experiences fishing are much smoother casting and strength. Good luck on the water
Watched your video and followed your instructions and spoiled my line. I never heard the water hack. But did anyway, I am amazed that that is the best tip I have seen and done. I let the line sit in my garage overnight, went fishing today and wow the line came of easy and no curling. You made a believer out of me!! Thanks for sharing. Will do my other spinners the same way ASAP. 💥💥💥👍👍👍Tight lines bro! 💥💥💥👍👍👍RG
Dude great pro tip there at the end. I always leave my spool for at least a few days before casting it so you didn’t have line jumping off the spool. I didnt know about the warm water trick
And for all the well creatures that visit the dump please cut up your fishing line or burn it in your fireplace or fire pit because once it reaches the dump many seabirds, and other creatures can get tangled in it! I witnessed a seagull flying with so much fishing line tied all the way around its body It could only fly and walk could not even open it speak in 3 days I didn't see it any longer! I study seagulls and most of the time the reason why they lose their feet is because they get strings tied around them and it cuts off their circulation and they lose their legs ~
Love this! Fishing line is terrible for animals and boat props alike. So many Seagulls, Loons and other creatures hurt by old discarded line! Thanks for adding this to the conversation.
Just the video I needed! I had to replace the line on my reel and spool up a new reel I bought my wife and I had not done it in 20 years! Thanks for the dunking in water tip as well!
After spending the afternoon watching videos on how to tie the line to the reel, I can tell I found your guidance the easiest to follow. Much appreciate your help 🎣
My whole life, my dad always took care of putting on the line, hooking the worm and unhooking the fish. Now here I am with my son trying to figure it out! Thank you for helping me do that...
Dang dude, this is just the video I was looking for as a first time fisherman.

I'm sorry about your husband. hopefully, your family is able to continue enjoying fishing and he's proud!

+John Keller Amazing! Glad it helped! Check out some of the other videos. Sometimes simple things can make a big difference. Tight lines!
Lol
Hilarious
santafeschehl whats funny about that
Man, I was ready to s***can my reels after putting some 12 lb test on 'em. I saw your vid and discovered I was adding line with the new line upside down on the ground. That coupled with your method of tying the line onto the reel before you start saved me from buying a new reel. Thanks brother...you need to teach!
Glad it helped!
can un help me
Sitting right here at the edge of a Tennessee Lake ready to fish having no idea what we're doing, you saved us. You're awesome.
Unbelievable. This is the best tip you will ever get. Thank you. Just had the line coming off a reel, destroy a day of trout fishing. Thank you
Thank you for the ending part! That’s all I was looking for
01:56 Very subtle and he doesn't mention it, but he flips down the bail. Everyone should figure it out, but you know, there's always someone in the crowd (me).
i couldnt wrap my head around it, so then i tried some fishing line
omfg. you got me.
This deserves way more like😂
I prefer rope
Thank you very much. After several attempts I noticed you do not wind the line around every time you tied it. You just tied it a few times. I was spooling it around and then tied it and that was the problem. Thanks again!
Greg
Been fishing with my dad for years! Moved across the country and besides the learning curve of fishing in a new location, 2 of my rods ran out of line and I didn't know if I just bought a new reel or what lol Thanks for the video! My old man will be proud haha
I remember watching this video more then a year ago.. here I am back at it again still struggling to line my damn rod 😂
Really well spoken and easy to follow!
line is supposed to come off counter clockwise to go on your reel clockwise.
Oh shit
More important is tension. Not from the hand but from the proper line spooler.
I agree, since I saw two other videos that emphasized the line coming off the spool counterclockwise. The rest of this video was nicely done!
@@MikeEbbers10578 That's what I thought originally, but did what he did in the video. Hope it works.
I later watched another video that said that winding in either direction works. So I likewise hope yours works.
My dude, I just did this on my President reel and it worked like a charm. The warm water trick and the tape is a life- changer. When I switched to a spinning reel, I couldn't figure out why when I first would take it out on the lake it would jump right off. Thank you! Subbed!!
Thanks for the tip on the warm water...son's line exploded on him this morning...
Michael Twigg do you mean that the warm water causes the line to explode, or do you mean that your son's line exploded and that you actually like this tip?
sam van der hoorn It’s been 2 years and I’m thinking the same thing
Pretty sure he means it just exploded off the spool. I bought a new rod and reel to keep in my truck yesterday morning. Spooled it up at the lake and first cast it did that. Was a PITA using it.
did u just tried hes bullshit for real? hes all fk wrong man...
These comments are dumb. His line exploded before the warm water. That's actually a good idea because like he said it changes the lines memory fitting the spool better and normally resting in its shape
Dude, freaking great idea with the warm water! 👍 That's the first time I've ever seen that trick in my forty years of fishing. Lol Thank you. 🙂👍
Ima a kid who just learned to fish my older cousin’s fishing rod was out of line and I needed to refill so that’s bro
I just started I have no clue what I’m doing lol
First time ever spooling a spinning reel. Watched multiple videos and this is the only one that actually made sense. Thank you!!
thanks bro i bought my first reel i’ve fished with my pops since i was kid. finally came around and this helped for a great start
DO NOT PUT YOUR SPOOL IN WARM WATER!!
I tried this and the warm water removed the grease from the inner spool and now it's constantly clicking and not turning correctly.
If you want to heat the line, use a heat gun or hairdryer.
Huh thats a good tip, you greased it up again then?
@@Impetuss Yeah I bought White Lithium grease and spraying it all the connection that connects the spool to the reel. It still gives me problems when fishing but it's useable. If I could go back in time I wouldn't have put it in hot water!
I’ve been fishing for 2 years now and haven’t caught a single thing. Anything I might be doing wrong?
Edit:
I caught my first fish a day later
It was a largemouth bass 4lb
Blaise Forster well what do you know I just caught my first fish a few hours ago. It was a largemouth bass 4lb
Did you have an AHA moment?
The video was good, but one key element you left out is to confirm that the line is at the top of the spool not at the bottom. That is a crucial element when loading your line. That can cause much grief and frustration for a new fisherman. Did anyone notice that, he said nothing about it, pretty key element, I guess if someone’s not watching closely enough they don’t realize that the line is tied on the top of the spool not on the bottom. Just sayin... other than that very critical item, the video is pretty decent.
What changes if it’s at the top or bottom? The bale will load the rest of the line on there overlapping itself anyways
I've spooled my spinning reel a hundred times but this time I followed your lead. Thanks!
Yayyy thank you. This is my first time putting line on myself. My husband got me an ugly stick GX2 and I just did this myself. Thank you!!
Open the middle of the 500 pages book ,put the line inside, close the book and run the line thru it so you have pressure no need to use fingers.Put the book in front of the reel. *tip
Couldn't that fray the line?
@@nickelhunter3129 if you go too fast maybe, use for regular line not braided line.
@@Eumusic1 ok 👍I'll try this method when I need to respool.
The label face up trick would not actually work for all lines. I'm using Eagle claw and it is spooled in the opposite direction
Flip it upside down. Should work fine.
You're right label up means nothing.
label up does mean something. If your line doesn t go on the reel the same way it comes off the spool, you'll get line twist, and that sucks😁
Not all manufactures fill the spools the same. Label up can mean coming off CW or CCW. Also not every bail spins the same way either.
Thank you. I learned something.
Awesome. Glad could help!

"Show u a trick so u can cast right away......take that off soak that for 10 minutes"
Jk bro great vid
Jim Fox I mean compared to the hours of fishing you’ll do 10 mins isn’t that much lol
Good info, excellent presentation. I see criminal defense attorney in your future (y)
