- In this video, i teardown down a 4T60E trans that was not moving cold and when it did move runaway on the 1-2 shift. On this trans, also the 4T60 and 4T65E the input clutch and sprag are on in forward and reverse. The 2nd clutch is the driving clutch in these units which means without 2nd you have no 3rd or 4th gear. Thanks for watching.
That is one of the best repair vids I have ever seen on YT. Just awesome. What you did in 50min would take me days.
Thank you my friend
This is a gigantic undertaking. Thanks for making this complete and thorough video how to for the 4T60E transmission, Sir.
Wow Gary that was Short & Sweet 🎂 yep like cake & ice cream! Thanks
Great video! Trying to decide whether to tear down my 4T60E myself. It's making a wierd knocking sound intermittent- all gears, all speeds, under load, cruising and coasting. No pattern whatsoever. Sounds like drivers side. At first I thought it was a bad CV joint. It'll do it every few seconds. It won't act up if you coast in Neutral. One time it made that knock sound and then a loud "Sprag" type sound (zzzziinngg) for about 3 second and then everything was fine for about a week- no noises at all. The knock sound came back yesterday but only did it a couple of times today. I'm stumped. 94 Park Avenue with 113000 miles.
E X C E L L E N T ! Expertly done and explained, i.e., the surgery to go in and remove all the internal organs. Sure do appreciate your down-to-earth knowledge and skill. VERY interesting procedure via your hands and experience.
Jan., 2022. I happen to have a nice '94 Buick Regal Custom in great shape for its age. Exact same 4T60E that just went under (remained loyal and active up to 204 k miles). Engine doing fine. A reman transmission is on its way to the local shop for installation. I can no longer take on an operation like this due to age and health, even if my son were to help me (or rather, if I were to help him help ME). I used to really enjoy doing these R&R, albeit not on a professional level; I know how to use the tools and I am very, very, very slow. What takes you 1 hour, takes me 4 to 7, so this, being my first time, would have taken me, I'd say 7 to 10 hours.
Kudos. Many thanks indeed for sharing this here, Mr. Gary. God bless.
Outstanding Sir! Thanks again!
I remember working on one of these 4t60e’s in my auto trans class and of course I had the virgin trans and funny part was it was a donor transmission from a junkyard that had water in it and EVERY bolt and seal was rusted on pretty tight. Spent more time taking it apart than I did getting it all back together
This is fascinating to watch. I am amazed by the engineering of an automatic transmission and the number of parts that makes up one. I have a '96 Regal with the 3800 and the 4T60E and it has a jerky, hard shift mostly between 1st and 2nd gears but also a little between 2 and 3. Just here trying to learn as much as I can about these models. Thanks for sharing!!
has this been scanned for codes?
@@GaryFerraro Hi. Thanks for getting back with me. No codes. Fluid is at the proper level and looks clean off the stick. 91K miles on the odometer but no maintenance history. It feels like it is shifting at the appropriate time but it is definitely a hard shift. No noises and it moves into reverse smoothly. It was purchased new in '96 by a 70 year old so I am going to assume it wasn't driven hard but she is feisty so I could be wrong! I am enjoying the process of learning how these work. Thanks!
Well Gary, tear down looked good, reverse band was seated fine. Installed new reverse band, 2nd drum, reverse servo seal, and gaskets. Works GREAT !!
I'm very happy. The old Pont. is back to daily driver status. 120,000 on the bottom end and 15,000 on rebuilt heads(valve grind by pro's) I did R&R. 25 year old dependable vehicle.
Real good #s on Ca Smog Check.
About $1300 in parts in her. All the parts you get with the 100,000 mile warranty rebuilt unit for sale on-line.
Hello Mr. Gary. Thanks for your videos they are very interesting. You know these units by heart!!! I would like to keep my transmission running for a long time. What would be your recommendation for the frequency and the quality of oil changes? Could you attach posters to the back wall of your favourite suppliers for upgraded parts and supplies? Thanks again I keep watching with interest.
Bonjour Gary
Tes vidéos sont Toujours intéressante, merci pour ton partage ☺️☺️☺️
Merci Habib
Great video Gary,i am always learning from your videos.
Thanks for watching
Great video tutorial sir. I just got through getting all the oil leaks done on my daughter's 2000 Lesabre. On the drive home I noticed it shifts delayed and harsh into 2nd gear. I forget the DTC but it was for a shift solenoid. I'm sure that with 198k on the car it will need to be overhauled I'm doubting it's just a solenoid problem. Installing a solenoid in the car doesn't look like fun and maybe a waste of time and fluid. I work for a Ford dealer repairing transmissions is basically all I do. I may try to pull the trans out and see if I can fix it. With this video and the ASTG book I bought hopefully I will have success.
Today 9/10/2024
Upon trying to put my 94 Ciera 3.1 liter, 4T-60E transmission into gear, it won’t go into reverse or drive. Thankfully this happened in the driveway at the house. Hoping a rebuild kit puts it right, big project ahead of me.
Hello, Your rebuilding yourself?
@@GaryFerraro No, Sir. After watching this video, I don’t think I could do it. This transmission has 148,000 on it, and was driven carefully and slowly by a little old lady, who brought it new, then my father, who was a little old man, when he took it over at 34K, and then I inherit it at 67,000. Multiple transmission oil and filter changes done on it. Fixed all the bugs on the engine over the years, and then I put it in to drive yesterday, tried reverse as well, and it wouldn’t go into drive or reverse. And I noticed that was the first thing you mentioned on your video, the symptom I experienced. It looks like the easiest course of action for me is to order one of the brand new transmissions of this type. Take out the old one. turn it back in as a core exchange, and install the new one, that way there’s no painstaking taking the transmission apart. It will be challenging enough to remove the drive axles and get the transmission disconnected from the engine as it is.
Sir thank you for this tear down . As I have a 95 Buick century 3.1 with the 4t601e
Your welcome, thanks for watching, please subscribe
thats a solid car if ya keep up with it (and dont live where they salt the roads)
my 99 century has 270,000 miles on it..... original trans
looking at diagram, reverse servo cover.
I used big c-clamp to assemble, good amount of force applied.
The part you removed in 20:24 has a small o ring “ on the 4t65e the o ring on the shaft is the part the torc converter slides over my o ring is destroyed, it cause the pump to seep fluid out and cause the main brand new torc converter seal to lightly leak.
I believe the oring acts as some type of inter pump seal on the input shaft.....I seemed to not be able to find one for sale.
My 4T60e puts out a grinding noise when put in drive or reverse. You've got to rev the engine to get the car to move. It might be a broken flex plate (my guess) but possibly internal trouble, Got to do the tear down next week.
Very helpful, thank you! ;)
Thanks for watching
Thank you for the breakdown video. Super helpful. One question though. Under the filter there is a little piece of steel on two pins. What is that?
that is a thermal element
@@GaryFerraro what does it do?
Gary I have the 4t60e-HD from 96 RIV in a Fiero and want to find a way to make it stronger. Please advise
Hi, Gary, thanks so much for the video! i was wondering, do you have any experience on harsh 3-2 downshift when cold? it goes away after warming up. it's a 95 cutlass ciera 4t60e. the manual states that the issue is either missing #9 checkball or 2-3 accumulator valve stuck. it seems like it wouldn't be the check ball. i saw that you said the 2-3 accumulator would wear out sometimes but the valve that the manual refers to is component 343 in the valve body. i appreciate any advice you can give!
Is this a coast downshift like when coming to a stop?
Never seen this Trans torn down like this
Thank you, and thanks for watching
I needed to know about a very specific component and he skipped that part in the take-apart 😭
Need to know about the part the driven socket support sits on
Edit: I've discovered it was the 2nd clutch housing 👍🏻
correct
Hi Gary, I have Park Avenue from 95, my gearbox have problem with throotle when going from 40km/h to 80km/h(european version), it's really slow, but when you give him full throotle from 0 to 80km/h with pedal in floor everything is fine, because it's skipping 2'nd gear(I think). New vacuum modulatoe could help? I'm also want to fill gearbox with dexron VI after changing oil filter, If this not help I was thinking about converter regeneration. What do you think about this problem, I don't know specialist in my city, and i don't want spending money on renovation if this could be something not expensive
Gary, weren't the center support plastic thrust washers bad on disassembly as well? Perhaps that bearing was either never fully seated to begin with or moved in operation. Great video. Amazing how many hard parts this unit needed for the repair, chain, drum, sprag race, bands, etc. I'm assuming since you suspected water intrusion the torque converter is replaced as well. How did the unit work following the repair?
Trans worked real nice, actually all of the plastic washers were bad but that center support one was all broken up. Yes, I did suspect water got in there at some point, i checked the radiator and coolant looked nice and clean. Thanks for watching
with good maintence and driving habits (aka, stopping completely before shifting from R to D....)
these will go 300,000 miles
my 99 buick centurys 4t60e has 271,000 miles on it..... and i DRIVE THE PISS out of it
its 3.1 has probably shifted more at red line that at 3500 or 4000 rpm
i also manually downshift when going down hills to control speed
and ive ROCKED ITS BRAINS OUT when stuck in snow..... to the point where you can smell burning trans fluid/clutches
(but once i smell it, ill let it idle for 5 or 10 mins..... go try to dig out some snow.... then give it hell again)
i believe that part of the reason its lasted so long is the 3.1 is WAY weaker than the buick 3.8....
but i still see no reason it cant go AT LEAST 250K behind a 3.8
ill take an old 4 speed over a 6 or 8 speed any day....
sure, they dont seem to have problems.... but all i need is 4 gears....
What would he the issue with no reverse?
I want to know what a VICOUS CONVERTER CLUTCH is on my 1992 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special with a 4.9 PFI engine.
Thanks Gary! Other than the heat from your parts washer, what else would move the steel bearing up out of the support? And if the lube line had fallen out the servo wouldn't the diff assembly be worn as well?
Take care,
Bill
Yes, if that line was out diff would probably go bad due to lack of lube. Couple of times when i take these units apart i've seen the bearing out of place, could be due to the heat as well
How about I have a problem since the 4T60 transmission has no traction and no avansq and I do not feel the changes and the pasta discs and the gasket set have already been changed and I do not know if you could give me an advice that it could be
Hello sir I have 95 deville with 4t60e every gear shifts fine but over drive only engages when car is cold in the morning it'll work a while then don't after the car is good and hot ..my code is like t039 it's saying torque converter isn't locking up properly ? What's your take on this car has 155k and transmission has about 96k on it ..I don't t think it needs a rebuild
Lock-up comes in after 4th i believe, do you have a scan tool to see if 4th gear is being commanded when hot
Sir, would you mind letting me know what the name of that line fitting with that plastic +brace is called so I could replace it on my car. I have a 1995 Buick park avenue with the series 2 3800 and 4T60E trans.
Vincent Graziano I call it the updated line fitting with metal internals
Gary, have you ever had the wavy snapring pop out of the forward direct clutch on 47re?
Never had one pop out but the plate found broken up many times
Are you still alive? Can't find anywhere to help me with an output shaft seal for one of these
Still kicking
Gsferraro@yahoo.com
e-mail me a picture of the seal
7:20 ive had NOTHING but issues with the "100% rubber" gaskets
ive tried torque to spec....under tighten....and over tighten.... tons of silicone.... you name it
the only way to stop the leaks..... use the OEM (or similar aftermarket) rubber coated metal gasket
that 100% rubber is just cheap trash....
Hello Gary.
Rebuilding a 4T60E from a 95' grand am 3.1L to like new specs. I'm hung up on one part I can't find.
Using ATSG manual. Problem, broken 3-4 accumulator spring (outer) for 3.1, can only find the inner and center replacement springs, 3.1 does not use center spring uses inner and outer springs. Two questions, can I use the 4T65E springs (available) ? What would happen if the inner and center springs are used with the 3100 ?
Thanks you for the awesome vid, gave me the confidence to take on this rebuild.
do the coils seem like they are the same thickness?
@@GaryFerraro outer(broken) and center appear to be the same gauge, the inner is a lighter gauge. Seems all springs I'm looking for have been sold out.
Options seem, go with 4.9L set-up(center-inner springs) or see if the 4T65E outer spring will work.
@@GaryFerraro + the springs fit the pockets it the piston well.
I think you will be fine
@@GaryFerraro Yeah, I think so too it's logical, if the shift is a little soft that's ok, rebuilding for reliability not performance. Kinda out of options anyway.
I will definitely let you know how it feels after it's running.
I sincerely thank you sir, Transmission Guru !!
ACDELCO 8634703 looks like the correct spring(outer), in stock, but not listed on Rockauto for the 4t60e 3100 combo.

I have a 1993 chevy lumina euro 3.4 L 4t60e, i have every gear except reverse.. no grinding or slipping at all, just revs up and no movement. Have any ideas on what it could be?
just to confirm, does the car move forward in neutral?
Hi there, I have 2 questions for my 93 Buick Regal custom 3.1L
1: when put Into “overdrive” gear , it won’t shift into second and so on.
2: when put into “drive” it will shift into second and I want to say third but the situation with this is that it will run at high rpms for example
Im going 30mph @3000rpm and 45@3000-3500rpms
The highest i got it was 50-55@4000 rpms
Any help or insight on what the problem could be is greatly appreciated
With this trans, the 2nd clutch on this trans is the driving clutch, meaning with out 2nd you will not have 3rd or 4th, this clutch is common to get burned out, more than likely the clutch pack is no good
Guys I have a 95 cutlass Ciera with the 4T60E transmission the car was a one owner 77k original mile car and runs absolutely amazing BUT at complete random when I come to a stop after driving and go to accelerate again it goes no where like I’m in neutral and I have to put it in and out of gear a few times to get it to catch again I already did a filter and fluid it still does it please help
does this happen in reverse too?
Well Gary
Finished rebuilding my 4T60E, installed. BIG PROBLEM, NO REVERSE !!
Forward gears engage, but nothing in reverse,
reverse band not correctly installed I'm thinking, what are your thoughts ?
I'm going to start the removal processes this morning.
Lots of new parts inside, not a low budget rebuild.
Fluid is at the add line, but forward gears pull.
Linkage/selector is fine.
rebuilt valve body(OEM)
Used ATSG book and your video.
Thx, transmission guru.
ok , quick question, does the car move forward in neutral?
@@GaryFerraro Neutral behaves as it should.
@@jamesjimbo4752 ok, the 2 elements applied in reverse are the input clutch and the reverse band, if forward engages and drives ok then there is a problem with the reverse band, how did the piston go in, they have heavy springs on them
@@GaryFerraro Not with difficulty as I recall. Unit came from the junk yard.
I was real careful with all my work, but I know how 1st times go.
Hard to think the band is not seated right, there's very little room in there, the input clutch and other parts dropped into the unit smoothly.
@@GaryFerraro In the rebuild kit the two case gaskets were the wrong ones.
Why would my 4t60e knock at idle or when freewheeling primarily at cold start up ive always serviced it 145356k miles
I would check for a cracked flywheel, loose converter bolts. I just had a suburban with a rattle when cold, that ended up being the right side cat coming apart
Hey Brother appreciate the video, I was wondering if you could help me out? I replaced both shift solenoids on a Chevy Cobalt and when I put it all back together it goes forward in every gear even reverse and neutral! I used the tool to install the TR switch, triple checked it ,I don't understand what could have happened to it maybe another solenoid ,it didn't do that before it was just bucking and set a code.
Sounds like something is wrong with the linkage. Is it setting any codes
@@GaryFerraro no, codes... but I haven't been able to drive it... thank you for responding
Great vid thank you ,,I have a 2003 impala ,Engine flares up between 1st and 2nd gear at half throttle ,Light throttle 1 & 2 shifts hard ? Can you point me to the right direction what would cause that ?
how are the rest of the shifts, the 2-3 and the 3-4?
@@GaryFerraro What happen was it would not shift out of 1st into second and it gave a p0730 code ,So I changed the filter and fluid ,still would not up shift into 2nd ,Waited a day drove the car again then it shifted but the 1&2 shift is doing what I explained earlier all other gears like 3 & 4 are fine ,,BTW Thank you for replying back I appreciated it
@@DELTRANIO99 In this trans, the 2nd clutch is the primary clutch meaning without 2nd, you will have no 3rd or 4th. I would think there may be a problem with the 2nd clutch piston or in the channel plate there is a valve called actuator feed limit valve, this valve may be dragging in the bore, fluid is full? i like to over fill these by a little to ensure the fluid level is good, these units may give false readings, happened to me already thats why i like to overfill them by a little bit
@@GaryFerraro Ok double check the level,,,, is actuator feed limit valve in the valve body or where the filter is ?
@@GaryFerraro Ok The actuator your speaking is in the valve body thought it was the other actuator will fill like you said and go from there Once again thank you
18:42 looks like you have the outer spring I need.
Any local shops nearby you can see if they have it?
@@GaryFerraro Nope, I wish. Very small town, shops here don't do this type of work.
I'm still looking. E-mailed Sonnax.
@@jamesjimbo4752 where are you located?

4.9 L inner and center, 3.1 and 3.4 L inner and outer, 4 banger all three.that's what it looks like in The Book, strange how a different engine spinning it makes a difference.

too much talking to start
It's not that much normally but i wanted to explain how the transmission works, so this was a little more than normal
