+EZ64 Just getting to the final battle is brutal enough. Stupid Nintendo Coin, I'll never forget how relieved I was when I finally got the Nintendo Coin. I got the game on Christmas, 1999, and it took me 3 years later to just get that darn golden banana and Nintendo coin from the DK Arcade part.
Took me ten years of my life to get the bloody Nintendo coin!! Still never finished the final Krool battle... Diddy's jetpack shits me too much 😆 Also that stupid banana barrell mini game where you have to chase beavers into the hole with a trap clap... Nothing has made me rage quit so hard in my life...
+thedragontrainer It still manages to shit on just about every other FPS multiplayer out there with its endless amount of options alone, let alone its map design and vast weapon selection. It's a shame the HD remaster didn't have server browsers, or It'd still be played today.
Played Episode I: Racer years ago as a wide eyed 6 year old. Finally mastered it after long hours of crash after crash. Happy to see I mastered one of the toughest games on the N64 :)
Turok series was the best and will always be awesome. They need to make a new one with an unlimited budget . The online multi-player would be amazing. Like 50 badass Turok style guns like the brain eater, poison arrows, dark matter cubes ect........ Turok had the best most inventive guns out of any first person shooter. Make it happen guys and take your time and don't fuck it up!!!!
Brittany Branton Well we still play the old online multiplayer of Turok2 Seeds of Evil nearly every day, and it's way more fun than any other AAA title out there ; )
I don't see how majora's mask is not even an honorable mention. Perfect Dark was on the list only if played on the highest difficulty rating, which I believe is not fair. Majora's Mask seems to be universally recognized as one of the most difficult games ever (its puzzles). I know it was for me.
It definitely had some of the hardest heart pieces to figure out, although I did get them all it took such a long time. The water temple definitely was a challenge.
Diddy Kong Racing was another tough one. The track layouts and obstacles were tough to deal with, the silver coin challenges were brutal, the boss fights were sometimes unforgiving, and that first Wizpig race is nightmarishly difficult.
Fucking Rare games were Amazing, i have almost every Rare release from NES to 64, they were the most amazing people on earth back in the day....i hope Yooka-Laylee brings back the old glory again.
I can at least say, I'm one of the few that beat Jet Force Gemini. Collecting all of those Tribals for the last ship part was extremely exhausting since you had to play every section perfectly without accidentally killing a tribal, you kill one, do the section all over again, no matter how far you're into it. It was extremely unfair, but the ending was worth it. Great game.
I love JFG, Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark, I still have my N64 and JFG and Goldeneye. It was nice to see one of the more obscure/less popular titles like JFG make the #1 spot!. Props to you guys!!
Turok 2 seeds of evil was harder then Turok Dinosaur hunter. I always found The Lair of the blinds ones stage a complete maze and a pain in the ass to finish. The Death Marshes stage was no walk in the park either.
mccuish1525 my memory pack failed and i lost the progress i never tried again. it was a tragedy when that happened. even when the game was fuckin awesome i just couldn't think about playing again. no way.
First of all, I'm glad someone mentioned "Shadow Man", but there is a pretty challenging game called "Nightmare Creatures" that I personally have never beaten.
Jet Force Gemini is underrated. It's ÜBER fun and captivating. I also do not remember a more fluid combat system that meshes third person and first person shooting so seamlessly. it has a ton of re-exploration value. you go through tons of things that require a key or another character, forcing you to revisit later with your new character or key, and find what you could not before. lots of fun weapons, there's even mini games, there's rewards for collecting insect heads! rare really had the formula back then.
I actually can get past the Lava Race level in Conker's Bad Fur Day without dying or getting any damage. It's believe it or not one of my favorite parts of the game. Here’s my strategy; whenever you’re about to approach a stegosaurus, pull back on the control stick and Conker will slow down. That always helped me. In fact, it still does to this day whenever I replay Conker. Although playing Conker's Bad Fur Day for the first time ever in my life and escaping Omaha Beach during the end of the “It’s War” chapter however was a HUGE pain! It took me about twelve times until I finally got past it. I don't have a huge trouble with it now, but when I first played this game I wanted to punch something!
So basically all games on the N64 were ridiculously difficult. Somehow I beat most of these and Mission:Impossible. What a nightmare and great time in gaming!
I loved mischief makers every level seemed so different and then you sometimes had funny games inside it like the dodgeball game against the cat^^ But for hard n64 Games i thought "Body Harvest" was quite a challenge
The top spot should have gone to "Shadow Man" while the game's A.I. isn't particularly difficult the overall level design is an exercise in platforming that would give seasoned Mario players a run for their money. No cheap time limits here, just pure, unfiltered exploration that pushes your navigational skills to the edge. "Asylum Cageways" being among one of the most challenging levels to grace a video game. Casual gamers, beware.
I was not expecting JFG to top this list. A lot of people have said it is challenging, and even though it is my favorite N64 game ever, in retrospect, there were a few puzzles that solve complete by accident that drove me nuts. Good list.
Tooie's challenging, now i'm older, i can respect and see the points. I learned a little trick to beat Canary Mary. place your finger and thumb together nails touching each other and run them across the button as much as you can, saves having blistered thumbs :)
+Rick de Vroede But no all is lost. Remember, there's a game made by some of the Rare developers called "Yooka-Laylee". Kickstarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/playtonic/yooka-laylee-a-3d-platformer-rare-vival
Sin and Punishment should definitely be on this list but it was only released in Japan but they brought it to the US through Wii Virtual Console so yeah It should be here!
Hmm, again no love for Body Harvest. Love that game, but it's so freaking tough. I tried completing it many times, but to this day I still haven't. The penalty for death or failure is absolutely brutal.
I rented it or had played about ten minutes of it somewhere. I think I remember getting stuck and not knowing what to do. Always wanted to try to finish it.
Man, I miss some of those game. Mischief Makers, F-Zero X, Perfect Dark, even the first Turok game. It was back when you had to actually go out to a video store to rent a game where I rented those game and tried them out on a weekend. One thing I remember most about Mischief Makers was the fact that in order to beat the game entirely, you had to collect everything from each level. If you didn't, then the ending would stop in the middle and then you would get the message about having to go back and try to complete the game all over again. That made me want to throw my controller at the tv a few times.
I can honestly say that I played every game listed here except for mischief makers and space station silicone valley. I have to say though, seeing these videos brings back a lot of memories.
I honestly think Majora's Mask should've been on there. It is almost guaranteed that first time players would have to look at a guide when playing since it is much different from the other Zelda games.
Golden Eye should be on that list, the highest difficulty was really hard, well it's basically the game that should be on every N64 list, it really was the perfect game.
Goldeneye was only hard on 00 Agent to be honest.... i remember clocking the whole game on secret agent difficulty when i was 10 but then again my reflexes and overall gaming skill were alot better back then than they are now lol
I disagree. I think they should only take normal difficulty into consideration when making a list. I only say this because from game to game how they raise difficulty level differs. Some games make it so that the higher the difficulty the less damage you do and the more you receive. Others make puzzles harder, shorten time limits and some just increases health of enemies but don't affect anything else. Then you have some that will give you a boost in damage but also at the expense of your opponent doing more as well. The list goes on so it wouldn't really be balanced to do it that way which wouldn't really be fair game unless the list was specifically made for that topic.
+Osman Cea I think Hagane is considered the hardest SNES game, also several shmups (Super R-Type, Gradius III) as well as Super Probotector (Contra III) on Hard mode.
Conker was easy exept for the Saving Pricate Ryan chapter (especially when you escape with the timer and lasers). Banjo Kazooie was tougher than Tooie, items would reset if you left level. Perfect Dark on Perfect difficulty wasn't that hard, the pattern to killing enemies was quickly peak out then take cover, let enemies shoot at cover till they stop, peak back out and kill them.
if you have an award for the most anticlimatic ending ever, Quest64. all that adveture, questing, battles... and you get.. credits, clouds, and a vague "oh yeah, thanks.".
+reynel4 I got to Mizar and I kept dying even after days of trying. I left it alone for a few months, came back and beat him on my first try. Certainly the hardest boss battle I've been in on the N64.
I remember the frustration of trying to beat Jet Force Gemini for years. Though it's one of my favorite games regardless. BTW no Bomberman 64? That game was incredibly tough.
Definitely an overall solid list... Definitely a few other toughies I remember battling through to the end and would add in include "Duke Nukem 64", "Doom 64", "Quake 64", and "Turok 2".
+Steffu As someone who put his controller down for nearly 5 years due to frustration with Canary Mary, I say nay. However, when I finally beat that feathered bitch I took an honorary bow to myself.
Nah, I beat it easily at age 9 when it came out, even with the "Time-To-Lose" hard AI cheat. It could be in the running for top 10 EASIEST N64 games. Mario Kart 64 was tougher but it still doesn't compare to the 10 on this list, so maybe it's in the top 20.
+KenDaKingArrives Nah diddy kong racing was always harder to me as a kid. Then again, I only owned a N64 with like 20+ games when I was 5 up until around when I was 11.
christian gledhill Congrats! Normal difficulty or did you use the "hard" cheat? Idk about you, but the Normal difficulty was way too easy for me even back then. Adventure 2 indeed was a step up, though.
I can actually agree with number 1, me and my bro had to look up help with dial up internet when we got stuck and once we assembled Lloyd, we had to come up with plans after school on how to tackle the rest of the game.
***** Open world, no real sense of direction or what to do next. Difficult shooting segments, time travel. That game had too much to offer indeed. That reminds me of another title on N64 fuckin' Shadowman. That game was ridiculously non-linear.
couldn't even get close to reading over jet force as a kid, picked it back up years later and with help form a guide to find all the space ship parts finally read it over. Very good game we enjoyed the multiplayer back in the day too
+Hunk666 I just remember the one where yo uhad to speed run Facility on the hardest difficulty to unlock a cheat and it was the only freakin' one I couldn't do.
Glassjaw 311 Ha, I remember that one. Can't remember the cheat itself though (either invincibility or invisibility), but you had to beat facility in under 1Min 30Sec on 007 difficulty. I sat three days at that shit ;-)
Extreme-G XG2 was a difficult and underrated game, I still remember that Mirror Mode cup (hard) not only needs memorization but you lose if you get 2nd or lower in any track.
I am proud to say I have beaten all missions in perfect dark on perfect agent setting. One of my crowning achievements in gaming.
n64 is still amazing
fuck yeah

RIP RARE...
+Elvin VonSander
RIP Rare BUT welcome PLAYTONIC!!!
Fei Wong Yooka-Laylee
+Elvin VonSander I for one am somewhat anticipating this game, but I know it's never gonna have the same charm that Banjo-Kazooie has/had.
Rare still exists
Mayfield Entertainment He said "RIP" to Rare because it hasn't been the same since it got bought out by Microsoft since 2002.
I actually finished Jet Force Gemini, such a hidden gem for the n64. Very underated, the soundtrack was mindblowing.
*N64 had some great games ✅😁*
There are some brutal Donkey Kong 64 mini-games if you are going for 201%.
+EZ64 KKroll boss is extrem hard!!!

Yup...
Mischief Makers, Jet Force Gemini. Those two are underrated gems.
loved them both
I wish we could get a Jet Force Gemini 2
agreed!
The Freeman Initiative on the Nintendo switch!
mischief makers was actually the first game i got for my first n64~
i loved it alot!
I love how half of these games are from Rare.
It's a testament to how challenging Rare games were and the poor 3rd party support on the 64.
+Matt Cipolla Someone got a copy of Rare Replay and just went, "Wow these games are hard!" And pitched the episode.
Rare did make some pretty challenging games
They also made Battletoads. This company is no stranger to deep challenge.
Perfect Dark is still the best game ever made
+Scott Miller The Best FPS ever. the most complete and overwhelming multiplayer mode.
+thedragontrainer It still manages to shit on just about every other FPS multiplayer out there with its endless amount of options alone, let alone its map design and vast weapon selection.
It's a shame the HD remaster didn't have server browsers, or It'd still be played today.
Perfect agent mode on Chicago level. I was very very close and I kept dying from spot-on fire
Odilwerk
I did not played the HD remaster but I still have a full operative N64 cartridge with half the campaign beaten on Perfect Agent...
who has beaten Perfect Dark?
Played Episode I: Racer years ago as a wide eyed 6 year old. Finally mastered it after long hours of crash after crash. Happy to see I mastered one of the toughest games on the N64 :)
I love Banjo Tooie 1:40 no matter how hard it is

Exactly. I mean, you had to race the time, getting around puzzles, and sometimes not even having a clue as what to do.
lol I played that game so much yet never even made it halfway through
It definitely had some of the hardest heart pieces to figure out, although I did get them all it took such a long time. The water temple definitely was a challenge.
tbh i think the game is kinda easy but thats just because i have played it soo many times before
Lol you havent played perfect dark then. Normal mode has different objectives that are arguably more difficult wheras perfect ageny has harder combat
Diddy Kong Racing was another tough one. The track layouts and obstacles were tough to deal with, the silver coin challenges were brutal, the boss fights were sometimes unforgiving, and that first Wizpig race is nightmarishly difficult.
That and Bubbler 2. Fuck those guys
The N64 was a really fun system. It always had bigger polygons than the typical PS1 game.
Fucking Rare games were Amazing, i have almost every Rare release from NES to 64, they were the most amazing people on earth back in the day....i hope Yooka-Laylee brings back the old glory again.

Thumbs up if you beat the Facility time challenge in Goldeneye!
+Pocok Took me like 50 tries but I did beat it. Had all of the cheats and even played 007 mode at highest levels. It was a pain in the ass...
👍
*****
FOR ME... it was the facility. It had a random factor, so not just had to be fast, but you had to pray to be lucky also :D
+Pocok Wasn't it something like a minute and twenty seconds on Secret Agent mode? That was my greatest N64 achievement.
+Pocok Yea. Pray Doctor Doak is in the fucking hallway before you escape. That variable fucked me over on some good runs. heh
So basically all games on the N64 were ridiculously difficult. Somehow I beat most of these and Mission:Impossible. What a nightmare and great time in gaming!
I loved mischief makers every level seemed so different and then you sometimes had funny games inside it like the dodgeball game against the cat^^ But for hard n64 Games i thought "Body Harvest" was quite a challenge
mischief makers is one of my favorite games ever.
Jet Force Gemini was my childhood.
Quest 64, aka "use Magic Shield to win", is considered among the most dificult N64 games... I'm amazed.
The earth element
That honorable mention surprised me too. I enjoyed Quest 64, but earth and water spells made you invincible in that game.
I was not expecting JFG to top this list. A lot of people have said it is challenging, and even though it is my favorite N64 game ever, in retrospect, there were a few puzzles that solve complete by accident that drove me nuts. Good list.
Majora's Mask and Doom aren't even Honorable Mentions, this is the "hardest" section right? You all screwed up big time with this one.
Eh, Majora's Mask isn't THAT hard, I haven't played Doom 64 since I was a kid so I can't say tho
Yeah Doom 64 is hard as shit. But MM is like any other Zeldas, it's just the game mechanics hat are different.
EnjoyingGoodMusic Hardest part about zelda games are the puzzles.
Doom 64 isn't anything compared to the PC versions on Nightmare
Majora's Mask isn't hard
Over a decade later: several of those games, I still haven't completely beat. (Racer, Tooie, and Gemini)
Tooie's challenging, now i'm older, i can respect and see the points. I learned a little trick to beat Canary Mary. place your finger and thumb together nails touching each other and run them across the button as much as you can, saves having blistered thumbs :)
Sorry, but Shadows of the Empire is way harder than Banjo Tooie.
That's one of the poorly programmed games mentioned earlier.
LREHAnimation Was it? Must've forgot while watching.
That fucking train level...
ikr the train level was bullshit
Remember the cheatmode? It was impossible to unlock just with 2 hands...
Jet Force Gemini was one of my favs along with Shadows of the Empire.
love the list
This list makes me sad Rare doesn't exist anymore.
+Rick de Vroede But no all is lost. Remember, there's a game made by some of the Rare developers called "Yooka-Laylee".
Kickstarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/playtonic/yooka-laylee-a-3d-platformer-rare-vival
Jumper that doesn't count. It's a Kickstarter, so they don't hold the rights to all the old Rare names.
JumperKru god that was so bad. just horrible
Yeah i remember that one - great game but tougher than Mike Tyson's face tattoo. Seems to have been forgotten about sadly.
Its the hardest game ever
I rented it or had played about ten minutes of it somewhere. I think I remember getting stuck and not knowing what to do. Always wanted to try to finish it.
I didnt think it was hard, just amazingly long
It's nice to see that some of these Rare titles are being remade and/or re-released on Xbox and Windows 10.
i was so scared of the giant ants on jet force gemini
He protecc
He atacc
But most importantly
He stab you in the bacc
YEEEEESS!! Jet Force Gemini got #1 spot! And I never finished it either.

Glad I got to hear, "Shake, shake..." :)
+Ken Krath I had some major (unanticipated) nostalgia to that sounds xp
I totally called it. Jet Force Gemini was the hardest gaming experience for me on the N64. I love it so much.
Rare, one of the best game developers, until Microsoft bought them out
I know. That's the only thing I hate about Xbox.
Many of the developers from Rare are currently working for a company called Playtonic. Hopefully they can rekindle some of that magic
I honestly think Majora's Mask should've been on there. It is almost guaranteed that first time players would have to look at a guide when playing since it is much different from the other Zelda games.
Perfect dark and space station sillicon were one of my fave games
Dylan Crapé yesssss
Golden Eye should be on that list, the highest difficulty was really hard, well it's basically the game that should be on every N64 list, it really was the perfect game.

Who else thinks the SNES deserves a Top 10 for hardest games?
+Shadsilvson11 The ones that come to to mind right now are Super Ghouls n Ghosts, Demon's Crest, Parodius
+Shadsilvson11 I hope they will do such lists for every console.
Or at least every popular console. :D
+Osman Cea I think Hagane is considered the hardest SNES game, also several shmups (Super R-Type, Gradius III) as well as Super Probotector (Contra III) on Hard mode.
Shadsilvson11 The hardest and most frustrating Super NES games have to be Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Legend of the Mystical Ninja.
Ghouls and ghosts is no.1
Conker was easy exept for the Saving Pricate Ryan chapter (especially when you escape with the timer and lasers).
Banjo Kazooie was tougher than Tooie, items would reset if you left level.
Perfect Dark on Perfect difficulty wasn't that hard, the pattern to killing enemies was quickly peak out then take cover, let enemies shoot at cover till they stop, peak back out and kill them.
Sub-zero mythologies is the hardest game I've ever played besides Turok 2 on the N64.
+Pineappla e That should have absolutely been included.
Sub-Zero does not count because of how broken the games is next to Superman.
such a good list, it brings back so many memories as I had all of these games at one point except blast corps

+Zack Devro Can't really defend it to anyone who disagrees but I have a soft spot for it. I just find it... charming.
I think Mortal Kombat Subzero mythologies took the cake
Sterling SaVille loool yeah never got passed the first boss controls were the hardest
This list just made me realize all the good games I forgot about that won't show up on the N64 Classic because of licensing issues.
I have yet to beat jet force gemini to this day it's just sitting there mocking me
+reynel4 I got to Mizar and I kept dying even after days of trying. I left it alone for a few months, came back and beat him on my first try. Certainly the hardest boss battle I've been in on the N64.
+reynel4 If it's any consolation, I got to Mizar 15 years ago and I still can't beat him.
Perfect Dark with expansion!! Multiplayer mode was epic!!! and you did not mention the laptop gun!
Man i´ve played blast corps a lot, i´ve already forgotten that game ( i know my english is bad)
We're you from?
Absolutely loved F-Zero X as a kid
Where is Turok 2
I remember the frustration of trying to beat Jet Force Gemini for years. Though it's one of my favorite games regardless. BTW no Bomberman 64? That game was incredibly tough.
JukeDenton yo Bomberman 2 was one of my favorite games ever. Very hard towards the end. Never beat it
Was hoping Jet Force Gemini would be on this list.
Same ! Surprised it was number one
Beating that game was one of the most satisfying victories in my 20 year gaming history.
+PhenomsServant4 its a really good game but um i fogot how to open chest after years
+Abel Solano *forgot
@PhenomsServant4 - damn straight!
Definitely an overall solid list... Definitely a few other toughies I remember battling through to the end and would add in include "Duke Nukem 64", "Doom 64", "Quake 64", and "Turok 2".
I call bullshit on number 9
Probably being a bit picky, but the game takes a bit of exploring practice. Also I all bull on number 6
It's been 16 years and to this day I still can't beat Canary Mary not even for the Jiggy.
Got a video on it :) bit chopped but still
+Steffu As someone who put his controller down for nearly 5 years due to frustration with Canary Mary, I say nay. However, when I finally beat that feathered bitch I took an honorary bow to myself.
Good for you :)
Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 1 and 2, and Star Fox 64 deserved a spot on here. So much childhood rage...
Diddy Kong racing should've been on this list!!!!
LOL u must be a super hero or something.
+KenDaKingArrives I just beat it maybe a month ago! Both Adventures!
christian gledhill Congrats! Normal difficulty or did you use the "hard" cheat? Idk about you, but the Normal difficulty was way too easy for me even back then. Adventure 2 indeed was a step up, though.
8:37 no way. Just when I thought JFG wasn't gonna be on the list, it takes #1, wow. Game was so much fun, the only problem was saving the tribals ugh.
I still have to beat Jet Force Gemini, I got lost :U
Lmaoo took me 7 years to beat it
+Sono Fucking tribals. How am I supposed to NOT shoot a hole through their stupid faces.
@standardfoe - it took me 6 ages :D tbh, it only took me so long to complete as it took me ages to find out how to get the Power Cell ship part
Sono me too
I can actually agree with number 1, me and my bro had to look up help with dial up internet when we got stuck and once we assembled Lloyd, we had to come up with plans after school on how to tackle the rest of the game.
Body Harvest, another early Rockstar title that was extremely difficult.
Right on, and it was awesome. Dude that game was so ahead of its time too
*****
Open world, no real sense of direction or what to do next. Difficult shooting segments, time travel. That game had too much to offer indeed. That reminds me of another title on N64 fuckin' Shadowman. That game was ridiculously non-linear.
Yes, thank you for Perfect dark being included and at least a mention of that port of Shadows of the Empire.
F-Zero X has the best OST❤️. !!!Heavy ass shit¡¡¡
Love it 🤘🏽😎🤘🏽
couldn't even get close to reading over jet force as a kid, picked it back up years later and with help form a guide to find all the space ship parts finally read it over. Very good game we enjoyed the multiplayer back in the day too
Oh well, no one played GoldenEye on 007 - difficulty? And I remember unlocking the cheats were a real pain in the ass, too.
+Hunk666 I just remember the one where yo uhad to speed run Facility on the hardest difficulty to unlock a cheat and it was the only freakin' one I couldn't do.
Glassjaw 311
Ha, I remember that one. Can't remember the cheat itself though (either invincibility or invisibility), but you had to beat facility in under 1Min 30Sec on 007 difficulty. I sat three days at that shit ;-)
+Hunk666 Invincibility.
+Hunk666 Time to beat on Facility is 2:05.
I think you're thinking of the Library which you had to beat in 1:20 on 00 Agent.
*****
Ah well, could be. It is already quite some time gone by.
Lol, I remember playing Blast Corps as a kid and just blowing everything up. I had no idea you were supposed to clear the way for a nuke. Hahaha.
Jet Force Gemini was a wonderfull game !
+Renan Coutinho indeed
yes it was, I still hum the main title theme to this game.
i regret selling my n64 cause i never actually completed the game
This game works fine on Project 64 emulator. Go play it again !
Castlevania 64 and Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, I have really cringing memories of those two titles.
Rayman 2 should have been on here
Extreme-G XG2 was a difficult and underrated game, I still remember that Mirror Mode cup (hard) not only needs memorization but you lose if you get 2nd or lower in any track.
