  • My fix for the L405 Range Rover sunroof leak. I could not find a repair procedure for this, and assume that based on part availability, the dealers would replace the entire sunroof unit. The entire sunroof assembly is over $3,000 dollars. We ran this car through a car wash after this fix and all is nice and dry now. Will report back in on how the drains are holding up over time.
    Items used for this fix:
    Tools
    3/8" drill bit
    Tubing flaring kit: a.co/d/hV292y5
    Door Tools/Pick and Removal Kit: a.co/d/evQPs5M
    All Data DIY- Reference for how to drop headliner: my.alldata.com
    Material
    3/8" OD copper tubing
    Permatex Right Stuff Sealant

    I just did this fix after the speakers started to crackle. I ran a borescope down the drains with the sunroof full open. One was super blocked by rust and the other tube just dangling. I used 2 3/8 stainless steel nut tees with the prongs ground off and 3m 5200 to hold them in place. I didnt have to take out the sunroof. The hardest part was dropping the sunroof. Now that Ive done it, I could do it again in about 3 hours not including dry time for the sealant. Pro tip: with the headliner resting on the head rests, hop in the back seat and face the drains looking outward. You will have plenty of space to work with. But yea, if you own a L405, get a cheap borescope to connect to your phone and check these drains before its too late.

    Hi. Is there two drained holes or four? Some videos shows there are four. Two in front and two in rear; one you showed

      As far as I know I only found the two toward the rear. Expected to have two up front but they were not there.

      @@juliansantiago7672 my fix was pretty similar. The only difference is that I used Boat Thru Hull Fittings Marine Stainless Steel with Nut, instead of copper fitting.

    What a horrible design flaw from Land Rover. Both of mine are clogged. Hopefully I can fix without removing the sunroof glass.
    Thanks for the video

    Curious about how this is holding up a year out? Any new rust?

    Do you know where the drains come out at the bottom? I want to check the drain nipples underneath, but JLR likes to hide them. Thanks in advance.

      I know that I put water in the drains and they come out near the rear tires, it’s been a while so cannot remember off hand where they come out exactly.

      @@GinosGarageUSA Thanks for the reply. I the end, mine were rusted out 100%. I did a fix similar to yours using SS Nut Tees and 3M 5200. Worked like a charm. I didnt pull the sunroof but used a stiff wire to guide the Nut Tee into the new, clean hole (which was prepped with POR15. Works as designed now. What a nightmare.

    Hi there. I’m about to undertake this on my 2013 L405. It’s completely rotted out the pipe and water run all down into carpets etc.. what silicone did you use? And what did you use to flare the copper pipe? Thank you!! ❤

    Hi I fixed this issue and the rear pillars still has leakage from roof do you have any idea what might have caused this?

      I would check the hoses to make sure they are not damaged or blocked.

    Hi. Great fix!!! What size of hose do you use and where do you get these ?

    • @GinosGarageUSA
      @GinosGarageUSA  Рік тому

      I used 3/8” OD copper so you could use 3/8” ID hose if you need to replace them. I reused the hoses as they were in good shape.

      Missed this comment somehow, but the fix is still holding up fine. Has been through heavy Florida rains and a trip to Dallas, Texas in the heat and no issues to report.

    Can you tell me what size drill you used to drill out the hole please

    • @GinosGarageUSA
      @GinosGarageUSA  Рік тому

      It was 3/8" OD copper tubing so I used a 3/8" drill bit.

      Thanks, and how difficult was it to remove the section of the sunroof. Could this be done without removing it?

    • @GinosGarageUSA
      @GinosGarageUSA  Рік тому

      @@ming_the_merciless198 If you can get the drill in from the bottom then you could possibly do it without removing the roof panel. It may be a bit more tricky to get the new tube in. I would suggest getting an online service manual from alldatadiy or similar if you remove the roof panel, it will give you step by step instructions, you will need it to help re-align the panel when you install it back.

    Hi, Excellent fix, thanks for the video. How did you you replace the bottom rubber hoses and can you get them aftermarket?

    • @GinosGarageUSA
      @GinosGarageUSA  Рік тому +1

      I did not replace the hoses. Not sure of the availability aftermarket. You could probably just use some standard hose from the hardware store.

    Hi there. Great fix, thank you! I found this issue on my car RR also. However, it appears to have been happening for a while and the frame now has a lot of water stuck in bottom and the rear foot wells are soaked with mold forming. Any ideas how to get that water out as there doesn’t seem to be a drain. Many thanks!

    • @GinosGarageUSA
      @GinosGarageUSA  Рік тому +1

      No problem, yes apparently this is fairly common issue. I would suggest drilling a small hole and then putting a rubber plug in it. Not sure exactly what part of the frame you are talking about, but hopefully you can find somewhere inconspicuous to drill the hole.

    • @vivirpaul7180
      @vivirpaul7180 Рік тому +1

      That’s great, thank you. It’s the part below the rear foot wells on both sides, just in front of the rear tyres. I was thinking drilling a hole might be the only solution

    • @GinosGarageUSA
      @GinosGarageUSA  Рік тому +1

      @@vivirpaul7180 I suppose the only other way would be to try to push a tube down there and pump or suck it out with a wet/dry vac.

    How do you check the drains?

    • @GinosGarageUSA
      @GinosGarageUSA  Рік тому +1

      You can pull the door seal off from around the rear passenger doors and peek up under the headliner to see the drains.

    • @GinosGarageUSA
      @GinosGarageUSA  Рік тому +1

      Yea, apparently the drains are supposed to be cleaned as a part of the maintenance but its probably not done due to the fear of knocking the hose off. I am sure they are trying to get them out of warranty without having to fix the issue. And when it does happen they still do not cover it and consider it like an accident/flood, you have to claim it on your insurance!

      @@GinosGarageUSA I bet a plastic or aluminum tray would be much better than a stamped steel one. For the cost of them you would think they would have been made much better than that.
