I was born on a Navy base on Okinawa. Then moved to Guam for 2 years. Next to an Air Force Base outside Tokyo. Lastly, Andrews near DC. I grew up thinking that was every American’s experience until I was 9
I love, absolutely love to travel and explore. To the point where I get kind of antsy if I go too long without even a Penny Drive. So, I've always wondered, as a kid did you enjoy bouncing around or did it suck not being able to have roots?

@@Karen-pk3uv it’s hard to answer where I’m from. I always pause. But even when my dad retired, we moved 30 minutes from an Air Base. Lot of people around who understood. It’s only in adulthood that people can’t believe how I grew up.

22:30 Gander was also a massively significant place on September 11th, 2001. When the US shutdown all airspace, a ton of flights from the UK and the rest of Europe were forced to land in Gander. The people of Gander were incredibly hospitable to all of the passengers, providing them with water, food, places to say, etc.
They should view that piece Tom Brokow did on this, Operation Yellow Ribbon.
Frankly, they were shockingly hospitable and went above and beyond. Literally opening up their homes, donating everything, the pharmacy helped with prescriptions, stores not charging, helped people contact their families, watched children etc. A couple of people met their spouses. They are civilians. They didn't have to do anything and certainly not to the extent they did. It's a favor I hope we never have to repay, but I'm willing and ready to.

Yep! I live within a mile of the flight line of Barksdale Air Force Base in North Louisiana US, home of the 2nd Bomb Wing, the 8th Air Force, and Global Strike Command. This base is the usual home base for the remaining B-52 fleet as well. This base is massive and I get a daily front row seat to planes doing war maneuvers. If the rest of our bases are anything like the one I live close to then China and any other potential enemy should be afraid. Our military don’t play.
Tbh this isn’t a political post, but they’ve been extremely bold over the last 2-3 months. I think they’re kinda testing the new president

Almost all overseas American bases are governed by a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). Often, the base is officially owned by the host country. For example, in the UK, there are RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and several other bases that have an actual British commander and fly the British flag right next to the US flag.
What one should remember is that any country can insist that the US military leave - and we will do it. As General Colin Powell once said, when we base people in other countries, the only land we ask to keep permanently is enough land to bury our dead. And nowadays, we don't even do that. We fly them home, instead. Also, what this guy is not counting are the thousands of bases where Americans have been stationed, but are now closed. They are closed either because the war for which they were needed ended or the host country had a regime change and told us to leave - which we did.

Libya was entirely French bullshittery. Our involvement in that was fulfilling our NATO obligations.
@chess boi Don't forget about Japan either. They can't tell the USA to leave even if they want to. Japan's still stuck with the treaty it formed with the USA with forced 'self-defense' and I'm pretty sure that treaty says that the japanese government is not allowed to tell them to leave.

@@okairo AFAIK Japan has actually found a loophole, they dont have a military in the traditional sense but they have something military adjacent, will have to check up on that again to make sure though.
@@okairo That is no longer the case, while over the years they have been gettin back some military right, after Trump, they are now fully allowed to arm themselves. As for bases, while occasionally there is some stir and protests US presence is overall preferred as a deterrent from China/Korea.
US Air Force veteran here. We don't have dedicated US Air Force bases in the UK, but we do have US military detachments assigned to certain RAF bases. For example, I had orders to RAF Mildenhall. There are a few RAF bases where US military units are tenants/guests.
To be fair my cousin who has served for 15 years and counting now in the US Air Force has been stationed at an RAF Air Base in the UK I just forget the name of it at the moment...

I'm proud for the fact that word conquest would be so easy from the US perspective do I think it's a little nonsensical not at all a little Overkill yes they got to realize is the citizens and the politicians are playing two different games citizens want to deescalate any conflict as soon as possible whether that means conquest subjugation or just laying back and staying peaceful politicians on the other hand only want to protect as much power as possible so anything they might want in the future is readily available from a political standpoint it makes the most sense that military bases everywhere even if your citizens don't agree with it

There is a big base in Japan that the people really don't like having there, but the government likes having it due to Japans close proximity to Russia, China, and N Korea. A lot of countries who have "crazy neighbors" will make deals with the US to put a base on their land so they can have a sense of safety. The government won't always admit to it's people that it made the deal, which can cause some tension between the people and the government.
you are naive... US bases are there for US interests not to defend locals, Russia will not attack Japan, while US attacking Russia is much more likely. as for crazy neighbours Canada would win in that competition
I agree, Logic Ov., the U.S. bases on Okinawa come to mind. Both S. Korean and Japanese governments are happy for the U.S. presence given the recent aggressive Chines behavior. Okinawans want the bases removed or shrunk. The Phillipines are divided as Duerte is afraid of the Chinese but negative towards the U.S., whereas his military officers would wish closer ties to the U.S.. The ambiguous feelings have allowed the Chinese fishing fleets and Chinese Naval Militias to continually challenge and harass Filipino fisherman and their fishing rights in their own waters. Moreover the Chinese now challenge the right of the Phillipines to occupy or man their own vacant possessions. There is no alternative power to the U.S. to counteract China or Putin's Gang in Russia. Unless former allies are willing to work in concert with the U.S. their ability to determine their own destinies politically, militarily, culturally, or economically will be diminished to tribute before the Middle Kingdom.
@puzzled012 of course they are in our interests, but when a deal can be made and we're giving something in return we much rather have it that way. A lot of countries asked or needed us at times in their histories and sure sometimes we overstay our welcome, but then when we leave people get mad again. It's a double-edged sword in my opinion

6 1/2 years in the USAF and 4 years as Munitions Maintenance. Best job description I ever had - To build, store, and maintain non-nuclear munitions.
To be fair, the "American" military base in Spain is actually a Spanish military base, the U.S. just uses part of it and pays for everything.

Where i grew up in eastern Canada, there was an American base, a chain link fense is all that seperated Canadian and US soil, to go in there we would have to change our money to American, to see movies etc, armed marines were at every gate, it was pretty wild
Fun fact: US submarine periscopes are controlled with Xbox 360 controllers. It was much cheaper than the complicated system they had before they adopted the controllers and the personnel almost always come in already familiar with the controls. The controllers were $20 each while the more complicated system cost thousands
We only know what they want us to know and if that kept my son safe during his time serving and my son-in-law who still serves, then more power to them.
Many of the bases in the U.K. are shared installations especially where air arms are or high tech or maintenance facilities. F-35 facilities will be shared as will the maintenance and part per a new agreement.
My American dad used to work on RAF Menwith Hill in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England (likely the place they said looked like Wetherby). While it was a "RAF," everything on that base was American - EVERYTHING. We would be able to get American movies on DvD ~6 months before they were showing at the theaters in England. As a kid, my friends loved it. My English friends used to ask us to get them on base just to see all of the American things, and we obliged. PX, BX, Bowling ally, Movie theater, etc. We would take them to the Commissary to get Kool-aid and Egg Nog.

I served in Spangdahlem Germany back in the early 80's in the Air Force. I loved it there. Absolutely loved it. Stationed right near Luxemburg and central to travelling all over hell and back. I fell in love with Holland and Spain.... I grew a healthy disdain for France. But overall... being located where we were meant a relatively short combo of a trains, the odd ferry, and/or bus ride (plus a taxi) and before long you were at a music or wine festival etc. etc. in some "distant land." (Much, much more "distant" than I ever thought I would be, in my lifetime, when I was growing up anyways)
Then... I ended up being stationed in Austin Texas, at Bergstrom AFB, and fell in love with that fantastically young and vibrant city. The US Military is indeed everywhere. Sometimes I wish I would have made a career of it but there were just too many damned rules to follow to be a proper fit with my personality.

They thought, after watching numerous officers enter and exit the building, that it was a place where Top-secret meetings took place.

In Florida, McDill Air Base is the Center for Almost All Drone Activity. Some of the Dones are flown from McDill Air Base all around the World, but other Drones are Flown from Locations the drones are Flown from.

I used to be a charter flight attendant for 10 years during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and we flew the troops. I’ve landed at bases all over the world, sometimes for troop deployment, for R&R, Hops, Special training, etc. There are definitely some really obscure bases out there. I’ve landed places I’d never heard of before I got there. But also, some really nice bases as well. My faves were Ramstein, Aviano, Tachikawa &. Kadena. Being able to use the BX was a lifesaver. And they really are like a small town, all the American prices and products you need.

I used to live Abroad in Germany while my dad was stationed at a military installation there. The base was the same size as an average American city. They had elementary, middle, and high schools. There were also burger kings, chilies, and American super markets in base. To me this was completely normal. My family opted to live half an our away in a small farming village in the German countryside. Many want to live on base so that it can feel like home but we wanted to experience the culture. Most Germans loved us. I had German friends and even learned the language as a 3rd grader. I played on the local German sports teams and when other villages played against us some would try to injure me on purpose when they found out I was American. I was even spat on once and called several slurs. All in all I loved Germany and want to return at some point and visit my old home. As a kid I never thought us living there was weird or imposing. I decided to post this as context. If you have questions let me know!

RAF Lakenheath is one base in the UK that has or has had a number of US soldiers stationed there.
*Airmen. At one point RAF Lakenheath also had the best soul food around on Soul food Tuesdays or was it Wednesdays? Either way best corn bread I've ever tasted.

The thing that grinds my gears about this video is that the guy who made it acknowledges that many of the "bases" consist of an airstrip or a supply depot that is just small part of a larger installation, but then he goes right ahead and still counts them all individually?!?! For example, the US military base at Diego Garcia is pretty big, and has a lot of individual parts, but it is still just one base...yet this guy still counts it as something like 15 separate bases. It is completely clear that he made this to fit a particular narrative.

In 1982 I was in the USAF and they sent me to a Spanish island in the Mediterranean called Menorca. It had a small mountain with two 44 foot billboard style antennas and one parabolic dish antenna. We had a 60 mile connection to an antenna on the island of Palma from one side and a 279 mile transmission out the other side to Mt. Limbara in Italy. This was part of a communication system that ran all around the Med into Turkey with small mountaintop installations. The site I was at had about 24 military members and maybe a dozen local national hire civilians. It was a beautiful resort island and if they had left me there I'd have never gotten out of the Air Force. Unfortunately, it was only a 15 month tour.

Yes, RAF Lakenheath has a commisary(grocery store). Fab hospital too, we were stationed in Italy and I was able to fly to Lakenheath to have my baby. That's right, they know and actually use epidurals!
In Okinawa the price of American "domestic" beers on-base was far cheaper than the Japanese brands sold out in town. Sometimes I'd see one of the older Okinawan women who worked on-base stocking up on cheap 30-packs of Miller or Budweiser, buying like 4-5 at a time lol.

You Mentioned Bangor Maine and it is a dual airport. A Public International Jetport & Air Force Base. The "Maniacs" (nickname of the Squadron) Refueling wing, that Flys the huge refueling tankers to refuel fighters and bombers flying across the Atlantic between U.S. and Europe and Middle East and Northern Africa.
the DoD should just tell Biden, it's big, drop the mic, and walk away. For the beginning of the video about the budget, it's so hard because it's a game. What I mean by that is that each unit in the military is given a certain dollar amount they can spend every year, if they want to keep getting that money, they have to spend it, if they don't they get less the next year. My battalion literally trashed brand new computers and chairs just so they can spend the money on ordering new ones, thus ensuring they spent their budget and got the same amount back the following year. We also still stop in Newfoundland on the way to Bangor.
The whole "didn't pass the audit" part of this at the beginning is very misleading. It's not that they didn't have the paper work, it's that the government wasn't going to give it to a bunch of independent analysts and accountants, on account of some of our installations being top secret, and we're not in the habit of leaving paper trails for top secret projects.
I've been told by friends who are in the military that they purposely don't let you know how big it is. All you need to know is your own job. Which would be fine with me. I wouldn't want to know everything.
Some of the Pacific air bases have the airstrip for supplies coming in for those living there, as well as supporting military aircraft. Most are multi use facilities supporting test ranges for missiles, anti ballistic missiles, ground tracking of satellites and space craft, toxic waste disposal and super fund sites, and training support. The toxic waste and super fund sites, very controversial bases to say the least, include agent orange disposal sites and where we did testing of nuclear bombs back in the ‘50’s. A lot are also joint use facilities for all of the US branches as well as foreign militaries as well. Diego Garcia is one used by other countries like the UK.
The thing about US bases, is that they are filled with non-US troops for joint training, etc.
I can assure everyone that the US DOD is not going to list base locations for many important bases , underground installations etc simply becasue that would be insane , give our enemies the exact grid location of every base?
We were stationed at Incirlik AB in Turkey. Best 2 years . At the time the locals loved Americans, not so much now.

Hay guys I'm from one of the small country near couples that he mentioned in his dialog, but we have a country name FSM means Federated States of 🇫🇲 Micronesia. We have 4 States divided by ocean about 100 or less miles apart and we were 200 miles SE of Guam but we have 4 US Military base on each of every 4 states.
I live 30-45 minutes away from a US military base called Camp Pendleton here in California, it's so big it takes almost an hour to drive from 1 side to the other... At Camp Pendleton they set off explosions and test bombs often so I could hear the bomb testings and they even make the house shake a little.
For more info I used to live on a US Naval base which is where my trade school program was, we shared the land with the US Navy so there were ALWAYS helicopters flying in and out. They'd even do training where they repelled onto a tower and it took place on campus. It was quite a fun experience but of course we weren't allowed inside it...

The Brits around RAF Mildenhall surround the perimeter fencing near the flight line and snap pictures of the landing Aircraft like they are birdwatching. One guy sells snacks and hot chocolate. They always knew the aircraft schedule better than I did. On the other hand a protester at RAF Lakenheath will periodically show up to the gate and throw bottles of pee on cars. I narrowly missed that scenario by 2 cars.
This is a pretty touchy subject here in the US. Some people want to bring all our troops home and others want them to defend the world, or at least scale it back to a reasonable size to save money. Our allies are also divided on the subject too. Some of their people don't want us on their soil which is understandable. The world doesn't work like that anymore though because we're all interconnected now.
What countries leaders don’t want us there? Not random civilians that have no say. Which countries leaders have openly asked us to leave? I can name you a bunch that beg us to stay. So I’m just wondering which leaders you think are asking us to leave

Host nation military personnel are authorized to go on any US base and can utilize services on that base.

Well, I used to live in, Oklahoma City, in a mobile-home park with a, Southeast 29th Street address. Across the street was, Midwest City. Behind the park, was an Interstate Highway, and then another mobile-home park named, "Bomber Park". So-called, because across the street from their entrance, was the end of the bomber runway for, Tinker AFB. Though now, other big jets use it, more than bombers.
Living next to an Interstate Highway, you hear a lot of loud traffic sounds, but louder than that, was the sound of the assortment of jet engines, including those being tested by the repair shop.
Hmm. Small facilities? 🤔. Well, let's see. The "Walmart" distribution center in, Pauls Valley, OK., is on one side of, I-35, while on the other side, they have a small patch of fenced land, full of above ground pipes.
As it turns out, military bases have similar set ups. For, Tinker AFB, they have off-base RADAR domes surrounded by high, electric fences, not just barbed wire on top like with those pipes.
For his next internship he can go to the State Department to learn about geopolitics since the end of WW2...

Gander is in Newfoundland. On 9/11 planes coming from Europe and elsewhere were banned from US airspace. Many were diverted to Gander and the locals had to find a way to accommodate thousands of people for several days until US airspace opened up again. There was a Broadway musical written about it called “Come From Away”. The opening number “Welcome To The Rock” would be an interesting number to cover in your channel. It’s the opening number and gives a nice synopsis of what happened.
I just saw that “Come From Away” played London where it won 4 Olivier awards including Best New Musical. I dare you to listen to the cast recording and not shed a few tears.

Before Broadway, it played La Jolla (San Diego), Seattle, Washington DC, & Toronto. It’s normal for productions to work out the kinks in productions before appearing on Broadway. Those four locations are common places for this. There’s also off-Broadway but I think this production skipped that step.

The President actually only knows about 75 percent about the military, it's size, weapons and budget. The president only serves 4 years, 8 max where as most all military brass serves 20 to 30 years. It's a need to know force. Even top brass doesn't know everything.

American here - my father in 1959 was stationed in Germany and my older brother was born there. So, when he went to join the US Navy he had to choose on US or German citizenship. Of course, he chose US to join the Navy. Also, he was proud to be an American.

So I’m currently based in Europe for a few months at a US base. Upon entering the host country and asked where I was traveling to I just said the town and base name. (They share the same name). The customs officer didn’t know where I was talking about. So sometimes host country officials don’t even know we are there? Like we have some loud aircraft🤷🏼♂️
Goose Bay is in Labrador, Gander is in Newfoundland but they're both in the same province "Newfoundland and Labrador" (most people just call it Newfoundland like Daz did). Goose Bay is much further north

I swear the music makes it seem more covert and insidious than military bases are. Yeah the bases look like little towns … because soldiers who are on assignment and have to uproot their families need places to live, eat, and send their kids to school without relying on, or taking from, the host country. The presence of military bases display alliance as well, because many of the places where there are bases, neighboring soldiers are welcome, civilians can get help with resources their country does not have (within law), etc. Having been deployed to Lithuana (as one example) I can tell you that the locals were ok and we spent most of our working time training their soldiers.
Exactly...we have an all volunteer military. In order to keep the best people we possibly can in the military for as long as we can, we have to try to make sure the places that we post them to around the world are as pleasant as they can be. Providing our military personnel with the comforts of home when they are stationed overseas is essential to keeping them happy, and reenlisting. 🖖✌

Mostly all US bases have supermarkets even in England. You mentioned Lakenheath. I was stationed at RAF Lakenheath in Norfolk. They have a huge supermarket on base. The problem is US service men and women are not allowed to give American products to the host country nationals. It is part of the SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) between England and America. But if you become friends with service men and women they might get you whatever you want. 😉
Many US bases in the UK were closed after the end of the cold war. I was in the US Air Force stationed at RAF Bentwaters in East Anglia 1968 to 1972. We had 3 squadrons of F4 Phantoms for both tactical conventional and nuclear missions in Europe. The Woodbridge/Bentwaters twin base complex was closed in 1992. Loved my time in England and visited the base in 2017. There is an excellent Cold War Museum at Bentwaters which is well worth the visit. Tells the story of the US military presence at Bentwaters/Woodbridge.
