I was on the USS Enterprise during this , it was a crazy. FYI the US sold the Frigates to Iran before the revolution. so Technically we just repossessed the ships. The two Iranian frigates in this conflict were not built by America. Iranian frigate Sahand was a British-made Vosper Mark V class frigate (also known as Alvand-class). The Sabalan was an Alvand-class frigate and also built in the United Kingdom. The two ships were part of an order of four.

The top leadership here in America absolutely take protecting the major trade routes as their highest priority, but as much as we fight amongst ourselves we Americans take major issue with anybody else harming a fellow American, and that includes our leaders. Even if they don't care, the people that vote for them do a great deal, and we all know that matters more to them than anything else.

Great reaction guys, as always. He's such a colorful storyteller. I was transitioning from flying Cobra attack helicopters to the Apache when this occurred. A forceful response can be a tough call. But the bottom line is the consequences for bad actors has to result in a price too high for them willing to pay. When the term "proportional is used" it suggests hitting back with similar or equal destruction. When in reality, it takes action that causes them to say, "Stop. We've had enough". - Hawk

Your in the right track. Kuwait backed Iraq in the Iran Iraq war. After that war ends Iraq owes Kuwait a bunch of money and instead of paying them back uses the excuse of them drilling sideways into Iraq for oil as an excuse to attack them. And that leads to desert shield which is the US and a bunch of other countries protecting Saudi Arabia to keep gas prices from going bonkers. And shield turns into storm and Iraq's military gets used as target practice for a week and a half.

Kuat was backing Iraq in the war vs Iran, Iraq owed them a lot of money, rather than pay it, Iran invaded Kuat, and desert storm kicked off from that.

Fat Electrician is a good story teller.. now what happens after this tho.. Iraq doesnt want to pay back Kuwait, so instead Saddam has Iraq invade Kuwait which then the US and Coalition forces start Operation Desert Shield and then Desert Storm. and btw the Battle of 73 Easting happens.. and then years later there is when Wagner and some Syrians attack Conoco Fields (Feb 2018)

With the 3 Americans that got killed, we have a base there because it's the only thing pushing back on Iran's access to the Mediterranean via Syria. It sits in between the route to move goods through the region. So it's not about trade there, per se, but about stopping Iran from causing even more problems elsewhere.

He left out the part where Kuwait reflagged all their tankers with the USA, obligating the USA to protect them as US flagged shipping. Otherwise the US military would never have got involved in this.

Just my two cents. The Gulf War was partly in response to some of this. Iraq knew they couldn't repay Kuwait after the Iran Iraq War. Which is why they invaded Kuwait (maybe with a little nod from US). They planned to take over Northern Kuwait which is where all the oil rich fields are (since they were in debt). They kept going, that's when US got involved. Pushed them back, tried to have a Shia uprising to overthrow the Baath Party, Saddam took care of that. Fast forward 10+ years later. Round 2 Fight!

The Harpoon almost got the USS Simpson (FFG-56). I got stationed on her after this and there were still people who participated in the battle on her. The log book from that day was cool. This battle is considered one of the top 5 most influential naval battles in history. There is even a book about it. It was the first time missiles were used in battle and it dictated American policy in the Middle East going forward. There is a youtube video shot from the bridge on the simpson for part of the battle. hard to watch due to radar playing hell on the camcorder though.,

Operation Praying Mantis and the Persian Gulf conflict a decade later were connected, but NOT from this.
Praying Mantis was from the end of the Iran-Iraq war... during then, like TFE mentioned, Kuwait was financially supporting Iraq.
Oversimplifying a lot, but nobody really "won" that war, and a decade later Iraq still wasnt able to repay Kuwait, so Iraq just solved their issue by invading Kuwait.
During the Iran conflict, we really weren't on either side per se, as long as shipping wasnt disrupted. Smacking around Iran was to restore shipping and preserve the bottom line...as you said, it was all about economics of oil trade.
Kind of the same thing a decade later... we werent so much about "save Kuwait" (though thats how it was presented) as much as "stop Iraq from efffing up oil trade".
So in the 80s it SEEMED like we were on Iraq's side, and in the 90s it SEEMED like we were AGAINST Iraq... but it was just USA protecting USA's interest in oil trade.

the reason the united states is so obsessive about oil isnt just because of gas prices. They have by far the most powerful and advanced military in the world. in fact, the only chance a country has at defeating the United States in battle is if the opposing country cuts off our supply of oil. its something that litterally every aspect of the military needs. The billions of dollars of equipment is totally useless if it doesnt have the fuel to operate it.

Mainly because the environmentalist wackos in our own country won't let us exploit our own oil resources
