The Wheel of Sharp Weapons by Tsem Rinpoche

- The Wheel of Sharp Weapons, a basic text for the Mahayana training of the mind, was composed by the great yogi Dharmarakshita. It was brought to Tibet by the great Indian Pandit Atisha (982-1054) and was translated from Sanskrit into Tibetan by Atisha and his main disciple Upasaka Drom Tonpa.
Here Tsem Rinpoche gave a very clear and powerful commentary on this classic text. Although the text was composed 1000 years ago, Tsem Rinpoche showed us how it is still very much applicable today, simply amazing...
-----------------------------------------
Dear friends,
On November 10th, 2012, I gave a talk to some international people on one of my favorite texts called WHEEL OF SHARP WEAPONS. I did only the begining due to time and did not complete the text. But what I did share might be of some benefit to you.
Dharmarakshita was a great yogi abiding in the jungles to do practice. He liked the solitude of the jungles. He had so much compassion, he did not close himself off from meeting people although in the Jungle. But instead he surrounded himself with the most difficult, harsh and materialistic people. And recieved the visits of many people seeking blessings, advice and teachings. Their minds were unstable, egotistical, angersome and always working from self benefit. They undoubtedly gave many difficult situations to this great Dharmarakshita, but his focus was to be patient and be among them to teach them the dharma. His main practice was to specifically help to tame the most difficult people who cannot be tamed by others. So he surrounded himself with these types of people out of compassion for them as others would find it hard to be around them to tame them with the nectar of dharma. Having their minds tamed, he can help them to avoid suffering and also reach liberation.
Seeing their incredibly self-centered attitudes he had great compassion on them. He patiently put up with all their mind games, anger, selfish attitudes and taught them the dharma where few other teachers dare to venture near them. He knew their attitudes would only bring them disaster, harm and many regrets later. He taught them untiringly to avoid negative sufferings due to their selfish minds. So he patiently taught them the teachings on mind training which specifically eliminates the self cherishing mind which is the cause of all our unwanted sufferings.
He composed this incredible text for the benefit of his students and the future students. He passed this to Atisha. Atisha taught it to Dromtompa...and eventually it arrived at the hands of the King of Dharma Tsongakapa who compassionately taught this to many hundreds of years later.
Everyone should get a copy of this text and share with others. It is published by the TIBETAN WORKS AND ARCHIVES IN DHARAMSALA.

One of the best teachings that I've ever heard. I was honestly captivated by every word.
Thank You Rinpoche. Your explanations are so clear and applicable. I am sure all who watch will benefit from this highly profound and simple teaching.
Just went to listen to Rinpoche and end up with this exceptional video...So Happy!!!
Another video that makes my heart expand. Thanks for sharing
Dear SGI - Phillippines Buddhism. Very happy to hear that this video teaching is very valuable for you. Please continue to watch this video again and again as for me personally, everytime i watch it, different teachings come to me and I can better comprehend the Dharma.
I rejoice listening his captivating dharma teachings.
I hope to one day have the good fortune to reside among people like Tsem Rinpoche. Then one day to have the courage to live as this text describes. There is hope even in this so-called degenerate age. The excellent and precious mind, where it is unborn may it arise, where it is born may it not decline but ever increase higher and higher.
I am so blessed to have you as my teacher. Your words help quiet my mind💜. I understand why yamataka appeals to me
Thanks all of you who made it so that I could receive this. I am an American lady dealing with being in a German village due to beliefs about citizenship and having a binational teen son. In truth I practice Christianity, but am broad minded so only some of Buddhist stuff is doable and makes sense. Still, good dharma talks and more inter-religious understanding! :)
All humanity be blessed by his dharma teaching.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the real path to inner happiness. There is so much depth here and so easy to understand. Watch this teaching! A must if you are serious about being happy and free of suffering.
Namaskar
Now I know u are my Guru, you always address my questions even answer before I even ask. You have most if not all the answers. I bow to you, you have brightened my light to shed on others. I can’t express how grateful I am to you! Your work will not go in vain I am in the jungle surrounded by poisonous plants and I engage with many wild animals and will do my part to create the garden of eden in the city of lost angels in the state of the queen Califa and beyond.
Hello J Ji, thank you for watching. Do you check out Tsem Rinpoche `s blog too www.tsemrinpoche.com ?
@ J Ji .. i feel im in LA too but i go hiking around the palisades and tune in with Milarepa , buddha , shiva , jesus and hator of Egypt and play my sound bowl for the people and have them listen just for a moment instead of talking they love it 90 percent of them love it .. be well
Tsem Rinpoche is truly a living blessing for me. He knows us, our different cultures and our collective consciousnesses and therefore he can relate and utilize his superior communication skills to teach the dharma. I've been practicing Tibetan Buddhism for years, worked in a Dharma center in the US and spent much time in monasteries and temples in the East. It's only been a few weeks since I discovered Tsem Rinpoche on youtube. I find him to be very empty and connected to the vast knowledge and compassion of the Buddha fields giving us a plethora of rare teachings, jewels and treasures. Thank you Rinpoche for your great efforts and compassion. I am glued to your videos and eternally grateful. Namaste.
Do you also read Tsem Rinpoche's blog as well? He has much dharma and interesting information on it. www.tsemrinpoche.com
Agreed and feel the same way. So grateful and much lighter.
Rewatching :
Everytime, something new strikes. And everything is so so right. You apply, you do see change as its based on the most basic of truths - wisdom and compassion.
Thank you Tsem Rinpoche. Very sincere good teacher. Your teachings are clear, indepth. I have learnt much from you. My high respect to you. May Buddha bless you.
I love this talk... It is a beautiful talk and very powerful and useful too...it brings joy and deep peace inside to be able to listen to Rinpoche. Thank you always!
A wonderful blessing. One of the best teaching from Rinpoche. Thank you so much Rinpoche.
I was somewhat familiar with the concepts of karma and reincarnation but my recent focus on tibetan faith these past two weeks have expanded my understanding in it.
Thankyou for spreading the Dharma long life Rinpoche
Thank you. I am just beginning this journey. Your talks are helping me to learn how to retrain. I have so much to unlearn, relearn. To continue learning. I would like to find good reading materials, beneficial teachers. I am in Alaska
Thank you very much, your words have helped me so much with the anger and oppression of physical suffering and my sense of injustice. I am suffering from a spine injury in Canada-watching Dharma videos in bed. I love your communication style, and the personal stories of growth and realization you share-I will try to copy your prayer that my pain and suffering in this physical illness can be taken on so that The Dali Lama ect.might avert illness and disability and have no obstacles in their teaching and pursuit of full enlightenment.I also like to include nuns, because it is good to have Buddhas in the female form-especially in these times. I wish you full enlightenment-and that you continue to share your talks. If you can recommend some prayers for me while I endure this physical and mental suffering of illness and injury-I would love some help with words and practice- also sometimes the pain makes me irritable with others and I sometimes say angry words-I wish I could take back-My teachers are in books and videos, and through some meditation. I would love some practices suitable for when I am not able to meditate well.-I need to lie flat to meditate-any suggestions? Thank you very much.
Hi Kim, How are you doing? Are you still recovering at this time? If you then perhaps I will try to introduce some practices for you.
One of the most gorgeous talks I've ever experienced. Thank you 🙏
This is a great, inspirational talk. Can I request for more of such enlightening teachings/ talks to be uploaded. Thank you.

Life force is what maintains this particular lifetime. Mind is beyond space and time.
Very good teaching thank you
Thank you !
🌸🍃beautiful speaking 🍃🌸
To me Life force animates all that is. Mind is its hand maiden. Mind force recognizes Life BEING. Mind is an aspect of Life Being and has developed the " selective intlligence" to observe itself.
Thanks Tsemtulku for teaching and making us think about what our life here is about.and how we can make it better for all being s on earth.
Thank You Dharmaraksita

Brilliant commentary!
This can be seen on so many levels.
So, the wheel of sharp weapons (as its figurative) cannot be approached/destroyed from the ‘outside’ - (by use of negative force in samsara). All within the sea of samsara are subject to be crushed under it, and the only way to break free is from within (internal, positve) - through discipline and tapasya. This may also be compared to the increasing material actions prevalent in the lower realms vs the higher, 'light', pure thoughts/actions which we (ultimately have to) - strive for. (to ascend)
The Wheel's purpose is to destroy, to hurt as karma keeps rotating. The fatalistic connotation is way too similar to the wheel of life, yikes! But then, everything is inter-related so…and in a way the wheel of life has an almost synonymous message of causality...'you reap what you sow'.
Lol idk why but its almost like everyone is ‘trapped’ in the center of their own wheel (in ignorance), crushing/hurting souls when they are committing negative karma. And then, when the time comes, their are at the receiving end of others’
And so it goes, I guess.
The only way to rid oneself of this, to be free, is to change from within. Once we change, and consciously strive to gain attainments, the fatalistic bonds start to lessen. When one finally breaks the wheel from within - thereby freeing themselves and their would be victims from the retributive cycle) the person ascends - is no longer in its karmic reach as one literally becomes beyond karma.
Perhaps this is why they say ‘forgiveness is divine’. Karma can truly lessen when one adopts and spreads a compassionate attitude - which is probably why universal compassion is the highest form of love.
This has to be one of my favorite lectures so far. I felt so relieved when I was hearing this, and the superb way his Eminence explained this. I t was like an amazing reconfirmation to my old thoughts, wiping doubts away.
I hope I can get my parents and friends to follow along too!
serenading Bee I’m curious, have you been to Kechara in KL?
Jacinta Goh No, but it's the first place I want to visit! :D
serenading Bee That will be great! Do plan for it.

Dear Source Source. Thank you for watching. There are more videos shared and produced by our guru, HE Tsem Rinpoche at www.tsemrinpoche.com
I wanna make a beat to go along with the chanting.
Dear Breakthrough Vegan, I'm happy to hear that you watched the video and would be interested in the chanting. Well, in Buddhism, reciting prayers are an essential part of our practice and therefore, one is highly encouraged to chant mantras on a daily basis to invoke upon the Enlightened Being's aeons of practice. Do visit wwwtsemrinpoche/com to watch more videos
Its incredible and brings a memorry.of a past Im starting to.remember subtley

Thank you Tsem Rinpoche for uploading this interesting and eye opening lecture!
I'm not sure what the beginning is.....a prayer of some kind perhaps?
IDK but I just was thinking if he played that to a dope beat and what a cool rap it would be!
Or make a beat out of the prayer or chant!
Maybe I should learn how to make beats LOL!
Thanks I. Advance for the content. Haven't listened to it yet so can't say how I feel about it yet.
Namaste ALL
Thank you, Rinpoche, for teaching us how to visualize the pain of others come to us so that even when we are in pain, we are practicing Dharma.
the monastery he described is a v good monastery.
Which monastery did Rinpoche refer to in the video?
So happy to have come across Tsem Rinponche's teachings though I'm saddened that I never got to meet him. I do have a question for whoever can answer it, I understand what he's saying about the faculties aging without the mind aging, but how would that apply if someone has alzheimer's lets say? In that case, how is the mind and body separate?
Hey there @chemicals8911! I am not too sure on how it applies to people with Alzheimer's either, but I do know that on Tsem Rinpoche's website, there are links and spaces for us to type in our questions. One of the wonderful pastors will then reply to your message there! Hope that helps :)
What is the difference between the Mind and the Life force ?
Namaste, i want to ask about Dharmarakshita...isn He same with Dharmakitri from Sumatran indonesia

I want to ask where i may acquire a copy of the book Tsem Tulku Rinpoche read from for The text Wheel of Sharp Weapons.
I really have to transform my karma and do great merit to meet a great teacher because I don't have the money to travel, to give offering, to have room and board to meet a great teacher. I understand there is the internet and UA-cam but I know we need a physical guide to rely upon and take refuge with humility. I really want to meet a Guru.

。等等

Rinpoche - Tuje Che -^-
I was reading a bit of the Six Yogas of Naropa and it said that one should not wish for a better reincarnation, that one should strive for liberation. I see this. I would like anyone's opinion or thoughts. In the Qur'an it says that he who prays to Allah should pray without intention of merit or reward; I also see the truth in this. So the question that came to my thoughts the other day was, how can I strive through prayer for liberation, without intention of reward.
the buddhist and islamic scripture are very old I know and do reqcuire some interpretation so there are multiple levels to be observed.
But I would like to hear someone's ideas on this.
Peace
ZionRebirth .Tello If we believe in reincarnation then we know we have many lifetimes and go through many cycles of rebirths. Although it may be advantageous to get a higher rebirth in the end we still need to leave that fortunate rebirth. From what I have read from the Lamrim, the once the gods have exhausted their karma to be a god, they usually take on a negative rebirth, and even in the god realms some gods are better off than the rest and they bully the lesser gods and etc, the Asuras are consumed by jealousy so it is telling us that there is nowhere in Samsara that we are free from any form of suffering ..... So as long as reincarnate we are in danger of falling to the lower realms, lower realms is filled with constant suffering and once we are down there it will be very very difficult for us to get a human rebirth again.
Thank you for responding to all my comments! It's offered some interesting thought. I read something in the Life of Milarepa yesterday, where Lama Marpa sang: "Hoping to accumulate many is cause for distraction. Keep in your heart the essential instructions."
This gave me a realization about striving for liberation; shortly put: I think this is sayin that we should simply focus on practice, and while having our goal be liberation, we should focus more on practice than our goal-- of course we should focus on our goal, I want to emphasize, but more so should we focus on cultivation in it of itself.
+Not a Sage One way that I look at this is, even in your striving for a reward, you can use the reward as a means to achieve liberation unlike most humans who misuse the rewards, and then fall to lower realms of consciousness. This is the basic difference between a Buddha and a human being with ulterior motives. A Buddha expects to receive rewards so that he can make proper use of them so as to have an understanding and insight of himself, whereas in the latter case the human being destroys himself with the rewards. There is also another way of looking at this : Sometimes you have to accept that you are a human being with greed, this is the best way to move beyond greed. In the hope to achieve liberation do not stop yourself from indulgence, because even a man of indulgence is on his way to becoming a Buddha. You can have a goal of achieving liberation, but if, at the moment you are filled with needs like, food, sex, alcohol do not stop yourself from these, because at the moment you can ignore them, but at some point when you reach a certain level of spirituality you are bound to fall back because the things that are unfulfilled within you will keep haunting you. Always remember this. At the moment you may be a person who does have ulterior motives, and there is no problem with that if you accept it. Acceptance of anything lightens your path and keeps you moving towards liberation. So really, to sum the whole thing up, everything on this earth can be used as a means for us to achieve liberation. As long as you do not cling to anything on the way, I think will be just fine. I hope this helps you. I know it has been about 10 months and I am not sure if this would really resonate with you, but Good luck on the spiritual path. :-)
$had¥ Well said, thank you.
I wonder if there is any way I could get the book for myself.

You cannot transform the mind by the act of will, because that involves the mind itself, you must move beyond mind, that's why you have to TAKE NO THOUGHT as jesus and buddha instructed, that requires thoughtless meditation, in that darkness the mind is transformed. BDONA4556 on youtube.
Yeah, but practice makes perfect.
When you say move beyond the mind do you mean that you move to the emptiness of the mind? As I understand it the mind needs to be focused single-pointedly on it's virtuous object without distraction. The best object is the emptiness of the mind, but emptiness and no thought are very different. Emptiness has great meaning, no thought doesn't get us anywhere.
how is your mind then???
Yes...and No. I have had several experiences recently where everything was chaos and noise around me, but I was just still...observing (without evaluation or opinion) weird...like in the midst of chaos lay the true seed of peace.

Hello Jarred. Not to worry if you don't feel you learnt anything. Take it slowly.
Dharma is not somethings that one can understand by memorising or by listening to it for the first time. However, i'm glad that you still watch it through. You can start from reading simpler teachings from Rinpoche's blog : www.tsemrinpoche.com
Hi, Jared... Are you familiar with Buddhism? Have you been following Rinpoche's blog?
+Kai Lynn Teh I know but what I'm saying is I'm pretty fortunate to be rly enlightened and I tell myself these things all the time what I'm saying is I already know all this but I understand a lot of ppl don't even think of this kind of stuff
Hi Jarred, do you know that Rinpoche's teaching is based on this text here www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/prayers-and-sadhanas/sadhana-prayers.html#sharpWeapons
Good for you, Jarred. Good for all of us. Happy to hear you are in Texas where some don't know this.
The mind 💩.
what's the go with fat monks? If a monk was so demonstrably unable to control other temptations they'd never be ordained. I'm sorry to be rude, but I don't know how to make that question sound polite
Rinpoche had severe health issues espcially with his liver. This was going back to his teenager years when he was living by himself and as a young monk where he had absolutely nothing to eat and he basically survived years like that. As a teenager in the USA living alone he was forced to depend on liver and beans as they were cheap, followed by near starvation like conditions again in India as he had no income or help from anyone like sponsors. It got better after he was recognized as a Tulku but the damage done was lifelong unfortunately :(
In another sense, high lamas can manifest illness when they absorb the suffering of others. Rinpoche was clearly doing that as well. He was a pure monk, advised all students to try to be vegetarian and save the lives of animals at all costs.
