I laughed when Karl thought the painting was 390 Nepali rupees. Even the print copy would cost more than that. Thangka painting is a traditional art and requires a lot of practice and days of work.
I'm in Nepal where their currency is Nepalese Rupee, so it was strange to be given prices in $USD. I think they do it as a trick, because रू 46,000 is a lot of money. Real Thangka paintings usually take months and you can expect to pay thousands of rupees (even hundreds of thousands because some are made of real gold), but not for this stuff at that store.

So all the artist just roam the streets looking for people to sell to why not just put your artworks on your back or on the side of the road why the plot to lure somebody in and misrepresent another persons art for profit. Plus the entire fact the art isn't worth anything they are selling it for shown in the same video... Scammer, Swindler interchangeable words of what these people are doing.
When I visited Nepal a couple years ago I had a great experience. The biggest red flags I saw is everyone is a “licensed tourist guide”. I did meet a local in Bhaktapur who cooked dinner for my friends and I. He ended up being our guide for our trek to Nagarkot then Chitwan. He was an honest man supporting his family and very negotiable with his rate. My worse experience was at Pashupatinath when I was being bothered so much by a “guide”. I can tell even the locals were annoyed by him
Scam or sales technique? Lol. At least you’re not in danger of being robbed or held at gun point for your wallet in Nepal. This stuff is pretty mild, Karl.
Not a tourist trap... In a tourist trap... people pay willingly and know what they decide what they want. Tourist feel happy and satisfied afterwards. As for these scammer businesses.... they lie and annoyed to get the tourist to pay for something just so they can leave... Tourist feel like they were scammed.
I'd say it's a scam. They misrepresent the art by pretending it's more laborious to produce than it really is and that it's more valuable than it is. Some of those things are little more than prints that may have been produced by the hundreds by a machine in China. They have a few people making actual pieces of art so it feels legitimate.
Karl you're gaining views from scams and you can't rate any art it depends upon how much the artist would like to charge for his/her hardwork. Try to show better side of Nepal as well.

In short trying to fool somebody by giving false information and using misleading tactics to sell something is sort of a scam . A scam does not mean you have to force somebody or beat the crap out of another person to make him/her buy your services/goods. Maybe you and your people who are into such business do not see it as a scam. However, the rest of the world does and it's a fact.

A lot of people here are mad at Karl because the two guys show a good character (Being humble and it's not for the money) which as well kept me questioning Karl for a moment then I backed up. Just keep in mind that: - Same work in found somewhere else for half the price. - Karl wasn't looking down at the "Student level painting" but more focusing on the price range (Double price for less quality work). It's just that this situation is pretty different from the regular content of what we see. Hard to see scam related to Art. However, I wouldn't personality have sympathy for the guys charging double because they are not harming Karl, they're harming the real artists working hard to sell their work for an honest price. So don't be mad at Karl for pointing out the obvious!
The main issue why it is called a scam is simply because they are lying about literally everything. They are putting on a whole show and it 's all a scam. These are not their own authentic paintings. They steal these paintings from real artists, and then just color them. These are not their own paintings, these are copies. That is why they are worthless. So not only do they steal the work from the artists who made them, they also sell these worthless copies for much more then they are worth. This is terrible for the artist industry. It is stealing from the people who actually have the talent to make a painting like this.
Scam is what? Selling paintings to tourists? As long as the painting isn’t a print I mean they can name the price they want from there and it’s up to you to decide. No scam

When someone talk bad about Ur country u say their promoted by extremists but when someone talks about Muslims or Muslim countries u say that its the truth.
Tourist Trap or Street Hustle might be the appropriate term in this case. A Scam would be attempting to sell fake or copied paintings as genuine original artwork. Like that time where people were trying to sell non-cashmere as genuine cashmere, that’s a scam.
Selling something for 2x it's market value to someone who doesn't know that this is what is going on is a scam. Cooperating to manipulate a market so that the value of an item is artifically inflated is also a scam
Don't really think this is a scam. Prices of art is based on how it is perceived. People are paying millions of dollars for NFTs and no one has any idea what that is!
yea sorta, but their business model relies on them manipulating you into buying their overpriced copies. im sure tons of people fall for it because it seems authentic, but ur basically getting a bootleg copy for twice the price.
It's not genuine at all. These are just copies with a few painters to make it look like they're real. Also the sales tactics are classic scammer behaviour. Selling someone pyrite and telling them it's gold is a scam, which is exactly what these people are doing with their "art".
isn’t that handmade thangka? If it is and haven’t come from the same artist then isn’t it understandable they would have different price? It is not buying iPhone from different stores at different price, you were looking for handmade ART. While they might have tried to charge you higher, you can’t cal them scammers yet bro. Did you try bargaining? No, you didn’t. You were just after a video content.
Yeah but in the second store he did not bargain either and not to mention it was not just the issue of price they were trying to guilt trip him by saying it will support thier school and families kind of implying it to be a donation when actually that is not even a school. I agree about the price thing ppl are free to charge whatever they want but getting tourists into the store calling it an art school, faking ppl actually painting the thing in that place is very scum baggy. Karl is not doing this for just the views/content he is warning not to trust ppl who try and lure you into that store. The fact ppl are being almost forced to buy it is horrible and there is no excuse for it.

I would not call this a scam , a scam would be if you paid for a painting and they disappeared and you never got the painting . It is very hard to price art work because what pleases one person may not please another person . Honestly as someone who has travelled SE Asia, I was interested in Nepal, seeing these comments makes me rethink that. If your mentality in Nepal (as shown in the comments) is that overcharging tourists and guilting them into buying in the fist shop you take them to 'isn't a scam' and 'is friendly and normal' then I really have no interest in visiting. Why would I want to travel there and spend my hard earned money, only to be charged more than 2x the cost and half the quality of something I can buy down the road? Why would I want to travel somewhere where the locals think this is OK? I could travel to plenty of other places who will value the money I earn as much as I do and won't rip me off. Good video, bad comments. Edit: Had something similar happen in Cambodia, once I left, I realised that I actually would have purchased more, but I just couldn't trust that I wasn't being overcharged. This kind of attitude is stupid and everyone loses out. If you sell high quality at decent prices, people want to buy more. If they walk down the road only to realise they could have paid less for better, they feel cheated and will spend less money everywhere to avoid that feeling.
Art is subjective . An artist can charge what ever they want on their product. @@mirajane2154 This is the entire problem. YOU have no idea what value is, no idea what something is worth. You literally CANNOT/WILL NOT see the difference between an original artwork and a copy of an artwork. There are millions and millions of very talented 'paint-by-numbers' artists, it requires very little talent and even my grandfather with severe Parkinson's painted a beautiful copy of the last supper. It WAS WORTHLESS BECAUSE IT IS NOT ORIGINAL. Just because someone spends time doing something does not give it value. Is that too hard to understand? There are thousands of AMAZING artists out there who make ORIGINAL paintings ON COMMISSION... MUCH better quality than those shown here and much cheaper... and they live in the US or Australia. They are also Original. I think maybe you guys live too close to China if you really struggle to see the difference between a copy and an original piece. The value of art is almost always based around originality and exclusivity, if anyone could just re-paint an artwork, then ALL art would instantly lose value and Monet would be worthless. Again, this is not even the problem, I don't expect you to understand these things, but I do expect you not to be rude when a tourist tells you this is annoying and makes them feel like a scam BECAUSE THEY ARE being ripped off. Literally no skin off my nose lady, booking my next holiday as we speak, and don't worry I definitely won't be going to Nepal.
Another great video, thank you. But don't forget, art is art and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Many artists in nepal have failing eyesight as a result. I'd love to see a tour of Buddhist Temples in Kathmandu.
Price inflation is a common practice by the majority of vendors in Nepal because they are aware that the customers will bargain the price. Nepalese shoppers are expert in bargaining. The best thing you can do is never settle on the fist price offered.

I think its more of a tourist trap than Scam "While I acknowledge the fact that saying they are showing an art they they did not made as saying they made it is kinda Scammy".
@@purefoldnz3070 The price there is around 30$ its already enough money, but 300$ its like 10times more so its like their monthly wage in their country.
You went to Nepal and went to Thamel (Tourist market) and called their business tactics a Scam. Even after seeing how they make these paintings and how much they get paid!! Are you Thanka expert? As you mentioned to check prices online. So if you want to show Nepal as a scam trap for tourist, then you are free to leave.
Honestly loved some of the student paintings more than the master paintings in my school when I was trying to be a good artist. I failed badly at continuing my art path. But art is subjective. Some pieces spoke to me that Artificial bots did and I still have them saved in my phone because I love them. If you love an art piece and it makes you cry, then it’s worth it. But don’t ever buy from someone pressuring you and pestering to purchase their art. I hate that about sellers and it makes me leave the premise
It's not a scam. They just try to make living. There is no law saying asking huge price is legal. If you do not want you do not buy. No force involved.
I don't know these salesmen are trying to act smart or your trying to act OVERSMART. First of all you have no intentions to buy or even bargain while every shopkeeper will tell you a higher price first in tourist area but your there for the footage where you can defame whoever you wants to claim as a scammer. People like you should stay in your own country and sort out your own problem instead roaming around others countries and making money out of youtube by sharing selfish content like this.

Commonly it's thanka but believe me it costs the same for us Nepali too❤️ it's overly expensive because it's a work of art and really beautiful presentation of tradition. Mainly painted with gold reflecting Nepali tradition❤️ don't get it wrong. But of course this seems so fake ❤️

As a painter, setting your own prices is a incredibly hard decision (to me at least), as this video states there's different standards for everything and therefore this scam is incredibly easy to pull off as being a legit and honest business.. judging how much someone else's art is worth? prepare to be laughed in the face by these scammers.
The two paintings shown in the videos are of similar designs but different sizes due to which the prices are different. Karl rocks tried to make it look like a scam because his content is based on that.. Nepalese people are hardworking and honest. We don't force until you are interested... We respect tourist and our cultures teaches us to be welcoming towards the guests.
yes i would not call this a scam. it is clearly and obviously hand made real art, as they showed a woman working on it. So we cant call this a scam. We can call their sales tactics immoral though.
10:54 Hmm... Not as big as the one that they showed in the art school. Also they said it depends upon the quality. A real art enthusiast will definitely know the quality. And an advice to every tourist is you gotta bargain as it’s not the fix price. Even the seller expects you to bargain so they puts up the price really high!
@@omshah9282 I disagree with this quote. There is truth to it, but I'm a pretty optimistic person... I've just been around the block, and can spot scams/manipulation from a mile away. There is good and bad in this world. Why not see both?
I am a international student in Australia I pay 16k per semester for my tuition while a domestic student pays less than 5k a semester at most for the same content and syllabus am I being scammed ? I need advice Mr Karl.
@tee has nothing to do with that I am showing you that if your a foreigner your more likely to get priced more regardless of where you go so does that make it a scam ?
@tee that's pretty ignorant of you to say he is being charged differently or saying that convincing people to buy things is a scam. I want you to really reflect on why you said that. If iPhone creates an advertisement convincing people to buy things is that a scam ? when UA-cam forces you to watch ads trying to convince you to buy things is that a scam ? do you know what marketing is ? You are assuming many things that have not been clarified in the video the first store clearly were making hand crafted thangka we have little to no information in the second store. Plus you also have to factor in quality of material, experience of the painter. This is probably the most crucial thing people from the west need to realize, you are going to a 3rd world country where there isn't proper governance like in the west so business practices are different, a big part of doing business in Nepal is bargaining. I think you just need to use a little common sense sometimes.
@tee Tero comment ko reply structure herdai malai tha bhaisakyo ta Nepali ki ta Indian hos. Dherai definition ko furti na dekhaye huncha. I’ve presented you with legitimate facts and you reply to me with some “learn the definition” bullshit. Your ignorance is really shining.
I was constantly targeted for a similar "painting school" tourist hustle in Cusco, Peru. One man in particular accosted me as I sat in a quiet square enjoying the day, shoved his "portfolio" in my face and insisted I look at all his work and support his family etc. The paintings were all clearly mass produced and churned out, and definitely not by him because the styles were all over the place. I lost track of how many times I said no, no thank you, not interested, but the whole point of tourist hustling is to apply high and constant pressure and guilt and harassment. It's 🙄 to see so many people in the comments defending this behaviour, no matter where it happens in the world. Karl is highlighting these tactics and letting tourists know that it's okay to say no and walk away, even though it's sometimes not easy to do.
There is a big difference between providing viewers with information for safety and then intentionally putting SCAM in title to drive views and engagement on your videos. We understand that the staple of your UA-cam is making people aware of scams but what you saw here is advertising. the people in ur videos are heavily affected by COVID lockdown and doing their best to do boost business by advertising their skill. I hope you make sure not to put wayy too much clickbait title sometimes. we love ur videos.
The definition of scam are called "Dishonest Scheme", they sell some goods to tourist but the price are multiple expensive than the local. If this not scam i dont know what to said
Karl be over using the word " SCAM ". It's a scam if they keep you in the dark, they straight up came upto you and asked politely would you like to buy. So not a scam mate. Anyways now go and enjoy Nepal. Give yourself a break❤

Hey there, I'm from nepal and one of sir karl's very old viewer. Actually, love watching his videos getting to know about the scams that happens in different part of world..i basically assumed him to be a very nice guy as he informed us viewers about the scams and i assumed it to be really very useful. Though, after watching this video i'm too disappointed..i clearly know how we locals treat the visitor in our country..we love to serve people from different part of world who visit our country..we basically try to communicate with you assuming you to feel comfortable around.. To every bright side exists some dark side, everyone knows that..but in this video, everything he goes through seems he himself is trying his best to show himself to be scammed.. i dont know what his problem is, he has alternative to simply say he doesn't want any goods he's okey with no company. While talking about the art, every piece of art created is unique..no rates or levels is supposed to be put onto art.. thanka represents our culture, art of living and basically everything..the person in video surely wanted him to buy one of the piece though he didn't create any buy or die situation..sir, can't it be called as promoting the local art instead of scam..? You could say that you didn't want to buy and could leave easily..there was no problem.. Each thanka painting requirs years of practice..the artist simply devote their whole life trying to be better..the art itself takes months to prepare.. people who know all this passion, effort know how to respect the art but sir you're simply out of the league.. Maybe i'm being too fierce about this topic but..is being friendly a crime..?? I'm done after this video sir..the actual scammer is you..who prepares such fake content just for views..?? I have also come to know about your history in india.. it's your personal matter so i don't want to disclose it.. But sir, you're in our country we respect every person here..i just want to request you to please..don't just spread hatred just for some traffic in your channel.. Thank you..love from nepal..❤️
Nepal has a concrete law for defamation, and in this video you have done actually that: you defamed their character intention. I hope they seek legal remedies against your vicious actions, intentionally construing hardworking sales person as scammer. I think you telling those artist as scammer is consciously or unconsciously racism from your part. You should ask yourself what makes you think they are scammer: is it because they are brown? You may deny my allegation, but think deeply. Is your rational that they are scammer funneled by your subconscious racism?
@@magingi I stand by the comment I made about racism. One’s unconsciouses bias does not disappear because one has married another race. We are shaped by cultures and values we are brought up with, and many time people do not realize the unconscious bias one inhabitants. The west is nefarious in teaching people false stereotypes about people who are not similar to them. They may connote ones niceness as “scam” as Karl does in his video. West has such a individualist culture that communal thing as showing arts as act of unkindness, thus they would be exploited.
Oh man it’s so difficult to explain this to people. All of us have been conditioned to think that western practices of business are correct. Practices outside of what occurs in the west is incorrect. Things people fail to realise is the western way of conducting business maybe correct for their country as they have proper governance and infrastructure. You honestly can’t carry that same mentality and go to a different country specially a developing one like ours. In most western countries you don’t even bargain, bargaining is a massive part of business in our country. The whole system of conducting business is different.
@@magingi bro you put into words so beautifully what I’ve been I’ve been thinking of lately. I’ve realised that in the west they are constantly “scamming” their population but because they are perceived to be governed by “policies and laws ” that we trust the system. To give you an example if you want to study in Australia as a international student you will have to pay more than double of what a domestic student will pay for the same content. Is that not a scam ? Just because they have made policies regarding international students they can charge us x3 the price ? Furthermore I complete my entire bachelors in English but when I try and get my registration I have to prove to the governing body that I can speak English ? So I end up paying 400 dollars for a test but wait for the test results come with a expiry date. As if to say that once my results expire I will magically forget to speak English so I have to spend another 400 dollars to prove that I can speak English. It’s so weird to think that we easily accept and tolerate being “scammed” by western companies and business and governments but quick to defame people from 3rd world countries.
Showing you around and talking to you in English is not a scam bro.. all the people you shown are either shop keepers, salesman or restaurant owner who is trying to sell their services you don't like it don't buy it just walk away..bro don't called them scammer ...
For everyone defending the scammers, I'll prove this being a scam: This is not advertised as a service and it uses cold calling techniques. Love your video, Karl, because I do so much art buying when I travel. Your experience in Nepal is interesting---I've never had some guy approach me in the street to buy art from "an art school." However, your advice is fair warning: do NOT respond to folks who approach you on the street for business :). To add to previous comments, if you land in a country and are gone in a few days, it's really hard to find a high quality artist who is not using an expensive gallery, and will offer a great price to you. It really does take time. I was in Puerto Vallarta recently, asked around for a particular type of beaded art by the Huichol tribe, and went to an open-air market. I walked around for hours, found a family-run shop that was loaded with nice pieces, and bargained for several pieces at great prices. HOWEVER, later that day, I went into an actual art gallery, and the owner had beautiful pieces (better than the other shop) and was willing to give me unreal prices for the better pieces. It was too late---I had already had a representative piece of the Huichol tribe and could not buy another one. So, again, as a tourist with limited time you will make mistakes, but honestly, as long as you are getting something original that looks beautiful (not an out and out scam) you'll be ok.
Thangka paintings requires skill, time, patience and experience so it is certainly not going to be cheap. What I will say is don't buy it, if u don't know what thangka paintings are. Problem is not the price of it, but the quality.

I'm in Nepal where their currency is Nepalese Rupee, so it was strange to be given prices in $USD. I think they do it as a trick, because रू 46,000 is a lot of money. When I visited Nepal a couple years ago I had a great experience. The biggest red flags I saw is everyone is a “licensed tourist guide”.

@@magingi That's not how racism works. However, I do agree with the rest of your comment

The difference is that these scams prey on foreign tourists and lower to middle-upper class individuals. Western art scams focus solely on the 1%, rarely ever on an honest individual, especially someone who’s a tourist or not from the West
This video is a scam in itself. That guy offered u the price of his painting you declned he accepted whats so scammy about this? You going out looking for scammers and visiting people’s shop and later on disrespecting and badmouthing them for some content and views in youtube and setting yourself as a saviour of fellow tourist for no valid reason now thats the bigger scam here.
I think you maybe in the scamming business 🤔🤔🤔
For many auto rikshaw drivers are scammers when they charge you more when it’s raining and there is high demand, but airline does the same in peak seasons, it’s just a business. This is a logic of these scam busters.
There are so many Nepalese who are now Against Karl but me as a Nepali I think what he did is so helpful for the tourists who are yet to visit in Nepal
Please change you behavior and be loyal
Loyalty is only thing that everyone likes to purchase.
Now I want Karl to show the good parts as well.
I m not exactly against him but dont even support him because dont u think he is also posting videos for money as well. Its not that he is doing for people to be aware and spend so much time making such video. He is looking for content as the scamers looking for tourist.

This was not a scam, they just trying to sell their products, if you don't like them or don't like the price, keep walking
@@destroyinghaters selling items at over double the price is clearly a scam
Thangka paintings requires skill, time, patience and experience so it is certainly not going to be cheap. What I will say is don't buy it, if u don't know what thangka paintings are. Problem is not the price of it, but the quality.
Stop promoting scammers who aren't scamming.
Go back to NZ and promote how bad your country is during a pandemic, car death rates, murder rates.

Wow Nepal has plenty of talented painters!
I have been to Nepal for more than 4 times, never been scammed ever. Most of the time I have booked my room at Thamel. Business individuals will approach you if you happen to pass near their establishments that's natural. “Two men looked out from prison bars,

Two types of tourist:
1. Heraldo Baldeiri aka Harald
2. Karl rock
" Heraldo investigates, Heraldo approves!"
But Karl what if the first gent was actually just a fan of yours, who came out to greet you?
I was also thinking the same thing, why would that person try to scam him knowing he will upload a video about it on youtube.
In an alternate universe, Karl is also a hustler! 🗺
In an alternate universe, Karl is calling a prospect and telling them that their computer has virus.
Yeah I agree as well with you guys, this isn’t a scam but just desperate times desperate measures to sell their work in economic crisis
be careful as many foreigners were beaten to death there and no one knows where dead bodies are….its in remote area where people making $2 per month
It’s a scam dude. Who likes paying double for things when you can get the same exact thing for less?
Man this guy is just trying to ruin the country image this happens almost everywhere around the world they are just tryin to hustle for some money for the family dude need to get out of nepal asap otherwise if i see you on the street you're really going to get in trouble fr just posting negative things making the local who are actually friendly look bad on the internet
Namaste, now I don't agree with all his videos but one thing I'm very certain is when comes to Nepal, current government is full of corruptions and Thamel full of scammers and they are the ones who's tarnishing your country's reputation...and btw I came across in 2015 when the earthquake happened, while everyone was helping the victims, some Nepalis in Thamel have worked together with some groups of Chinese to cheat donation funds and that did really triggered me.
@@nicholasutopia ofc there are scammer in every country there are alot in thamel too even we locals get scammed sometimes but this guy already made like 3 4 video about scame in Nepal and dude has not been outside thamel area everyone who is traveling to Nepal knows thamel is a tourist hotspot ofc he's gettin scammed there, Nepal and kathmandu is not just thamel area its more than that may be he should get out from the shady place and explore the real beauty this country has to offer and thanks for helping us in 2015 visit again soon and stay away from such shady places

At times like this, I miss the old UA-cam where you could see the like to dislike ratio. So sad to see Karl Rock turned into a negative clickbait vlogger.
Don’t understand what you’re moaning about. This video was very informative as people hate being guilt tripped into buying worthless junk. I understand it must be hard for you to accept this as it hits you close to home for you.
5.9k dislikes and 11k likes. Still I think Karl is in the right here, he was still being guilt tripped.
Word
Your just angry cos he tells the truth
@@GamerLoff Being guilt tripped to buy a piece of art that took hundreds of hours to make? In a country where almost no one can afford $300 art? And you cant call being guilt tripped a scam, you know how many people would ignore him if he came to them upfront? Who goes to Nepal for art? But after seeing those works, Im not against it. Apparently Karl is an art expert and is going to later show us how to spot a fake. If you dont want to follow someone into there store, dont talk to them. Karl couldve EASILY been beaten to death and his blood used for their paintings. Did that happen? No....
