- In this video I will go thru the complete procedure of replacing a hydraulic pump on our Wolfe Ridge log splitter. And also explain why we are replacing this pump on a relatively low hour log splitter. #firewood #wolferidgemfg #logsplitter #hydraulicpump
Great job and thanks for sharing! Extending the cylinders would have helped to lower the oil level so the shop vac would've worked a little better. All in all it was a relatively clean swap. Thanks again for your patience and willingness to make your machine better.
To the suggested ball valve comments, there are far greater potential dangers compared to benefits of adding ball valve to the suction line. If that valve gets closed inadvertently, it would cause a pump failure or cause other issues.
Also, please emember that I don't make the pumps, or get any money back from the vendor if they don't work correctly. In 2020, we had a choice... find a pump that works so I can fulfill customer orders or I cancel orders and close the doors. We did the best we could with the parts that were available, some of those parts were less than stellar but we are committed to making sure our customers are taken care of now that better parts are available.
Thanks for all your help on this pump Chris. I knew I forgot to extend cylinders. I totally understand the problems that were going on in the last few years with parts availability.
@@Lifeinthe906 Yes sir!
Who manufactures the pump? Whats its efficiency rating and gpm at 3600? Im guessing 22gpm? Do you also sell them? Standaes SAE2 pattern im guessing?
I have a 28 Pro that I got Jan. 2021. I also changed the pump with a new one that Chris sent me. The cycle time is 4 seconds faster. Plus the log lift and wedge cycle faster. I extended all three cylinders to help get fluid out of the tank and used a shop vac. Didn’t loose any fluid when I removed the hose and attached it to the new pump. It’s a great splitter, Great customer service.
I agree the product and service at Wolfe Ridge are top notch. We will get a better idea of what we gained when we do some actual splitting with it. I'm sure the oil wasn't up to full temp running it in the garage.
What was the beginning cycle time and then after the change what was the cycle time?
Glad we were able to help! That’s one reason I started my channel! As others have mentioned, fully extending the cylinders helps! Love the Upper Peninsula! We have alot of family in the Rudyard area.
Thanks HWM
Nice pump install . Everyone says Chris has top notch customer service . That goes along way these day !!
Thanks Del. Definitely top notch at Wolfe Ridge.
That’s awesome they stand behind there products! Great customer service!!👍👍
Yes they really do stand behind their products. I definitely will continue to do business with them.
Good job, great customer service with the splitter and I like your sense of humour 👍
Thanks Geoff. I try to keep it light when do mechanical work. It can be frustrating at times.
Dealer Service is important. Your smart dealing w/in state dealer. Good watch
Thanks Dan . They are actually in the next state over. We are up here in the woods not much around here 😆
Great pump change out!! Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Thanks David.
Hard working Man did a video on changing one a while back
Oh thats right! Thanks Eddie
Nice!! Good customer service seems harder to come by these days. Sure makes you appreciate good companies when you find one👍👍
That's for sure. I definitely am glad to be doing business with Wolfe Ridge. Stand up company.
Nicely done video Mike.👍 Thumbs up to Chris at Wolf Ridge 👍.
Going to miss visiting with you and your brother at the firewood frenzy, to bad it couldn't have continued.
Pat from nw Wisconsin
Thanks Pat. Yeah I'm kinda bummed out about no Frenzy this year. I hope it's not gone for good.
Very well executed! Looks like watching other messing with hydraulic oil got you skilled at that! Lol! Assuming you ran very few cycles in the garage (door shut), you will gain even more than 2 seconds when the oil gets warmer. That is indeed a huge factor in cycle time when you have high capacity pumps. But to begin with, 2 seconds is huge already! Thanks!
I think we may actually be able to get out and do some splitting this week. Then we'll see exactly what we gained. But yes the 2 seconds is a great start. Thanks for checking out the video.
Great job Mike.
Thanks Michael
Customer service is where it's at 🧡👍🏼👊🏼🔥
These days, it's a big part of buying any kind of equipment. Thanks Jeremy
Yep, Chris is top notch.👍🏻
Hey Rod. He's a pleasure to work with.
Thanks Rod!
Good customer service 👍 👌
Absolutely great service.
What are the specs and efficiency rating of this pump? Who manufacturers it?
Good Customer Service is hard to find, when ya find stick with them. I agree with you 💯 percent.
Thanks Bill.
Nice video Mike, no oil on the floor is a good result ✅
Thanks . A surprising result!
Great to hear about good customer service 👍 I’m also disappointed in the amount of mess after the project…no doubt you could have done so much more! 😂
Thanks Dave. I'm sure I'll make up for the mess on the next project!😂
None better than Chris Wolfe
Chris is top notch.
I general no teflon tape is used in hydrolic systems as it can partially dissolve and cause clogs in the system and/or damage the pump. If you look back, the high pressure fitting came of the old pump without teflon tape. So it is not needed.
Thanks
The only fitting you use thread sealant or tape on is regular pipe thread. Other types of hydraulic fitting thread are not made for tape and you never use it
@@cowshottv5867 Thanks. Hydraulic work is not really my thing.
@@Lifeinthe906 the short lesson is pipe thread is tapered so the seal really is created on the threads... so you use thread sealant. Other types of fittings seal on a machined face with an o ring or other type of mechanical seal, not the threads
Nice job- thanks for explaining - what is the function of the splitter valve - ( that has a hose going to front and back of the cyl) Thanks
would love to see it in action-! ❤
There are videos on the channel of us splitting with it. Thanks Bill
Great video Mike man I feel for y’all up in the UP all that snow we didn’t get any here in Virginia 👍👍🇺🇸🪵
Thanks Glenn. I think spring is finally going to show up here.
Same here. I spend enough over seas for the Mazda parts that if I can keep money here at home in the USA, I will do just that..
Yes sir. I have nothing but good things to say about Wolfe Ridge. Great company. Thanks Daniel
@Life in the 906 : Same here. They may be the "underdog" at times, but every time I ask a question to have an issue, they are up front on what needs to be done and not suger coating it..
Great work Mike ✔️👍👏🇺🇸 Rick
Thanks Rick. I enjoy wrenching on stuff.
Nice video Mike, hope it helps
Thanks . It made a good improvement.
The story on the pumps is that WR was told they were just as good as the Concentric pumps, they tested fine at the factory but failed prematurely. What was your cycle-time before the pump swap?
The last video he did said that the machine was rated at 12 second cycle time but he said it’s even slower than that. Yikes that pales in comparison to the Eastonmade splitters.
Yep that's the story I heard too. The cycle time was over 12 seconds
@@Lifeinthe906 one 28PRO owner said theirs was over 16sec.
@@thefirewooddoctor Ours was not that bad.
Something tells me you use to working on stuff like this !
Hey Bruce.Yes it seems like something is always broken around here. I enjoy fixing things.
Great video. I saw that video you mentioned a while ago. What was the fluid flow difference in the two pumps.? Or do you know that.
Have a great day.
I don't know the specs ob either pump. There was bo tags on either one. Thanks for watching
Why did you not connect the hp line and then the suction side ??
Sorry I don’t understand 😊
Never thought of it.
I feel like you have the hose clamp to far out. Go back in the video, and you will see how close to the pump it was originally. Half the clamp appears it is on taper, and half is just on hose now. I know it is low pressure side but vibration might cause it to start seeping or let clamp slowly cut into the hose...
You also realize that you will need to hustle even more in order to keep the beast fed now, right!?!?😂
Thanks Wayne. I'll have a look at the clamp.
I was about to suggest!!!
How many GPM pump did you originally have and what was the GPM replacement pump ?
I believe that it came with a 16 GPM pump. From what I understand that pump was not performing to specs. I assume the replacement was also 16 GPM
@@Lifeinthe906 Thank you sir. Your video was very helpful to me .👍
@davidwhite5858 Glad I could help
Best to break hp line loss first then remove pump
Yep
First.👊👍
Thanks brutha!!👍✊️✊️💚💚
👋🏻
Hey Eddy. 👋
Old man winter is still playing hell with you uppers.
As of about a week ago is sure was. Looks like we might be getting some spring weather real soon.
How come there put a shut off valve at the tank Mike . $9 dollar part . Mike don’t use white pipe tape not make for heat . Use the yellow tape I think it for heat in hydraulic system. White for water fixing Mike .
Thanks Leonard.
The price they charge for these machines, they should have a shut off at the bottom of the tank. So many problems with this brand, I would never ever buy one
The shut off would definitely make things a lot easier for doing work on the pump. Do you know if other brands have a shut off?
@@Lifeinthe906 I'm not sure but a ball valve is real cheap considering how much benefit it would be. Easy retrofit too.
Wow... There really are not that many issues. We have built literally thousands of wood splitters. You have seen less than 10 videos with any type of trouble. When there was an issue, we made it right.
A $30 ball valve on that machine not only costs more, but could also burn up that pump if it gets closed and the operator forgets or does not notice.
