I love how the director left out all the years in between when they were separated, as if nothing mattered but the time they spent together. Everytime they were together it was fresh and yet the same romantic feeling of first love.
Great point. You are right. The main focus was on the time they spent together. This movie was so well done. I admire Pawel Pawlikowski for having made this masterpiece.
My favorite movie ever. You get a sense of how two people can cling to and destroy each other. It's a true thing - this sort of story happens all the time - seems especially prevalent among struggling artists, the would-be famous.
Me and my wife watched this movie this past weekend and since then we both got addicted to this song, though we don't understand a single word without subtitles still we love it like anything.
This film was difficult for me to watch. The way the protagonists hurt each other made me feel almost violated, and the conclusion was so dark, yet rational (given the circumstances they had created), I cannot believe I didn’t see it coming.
I think it strikes a nerve with so many people because … sadly, and I am ashamed to admit, for me at least, I know the feeling of hurting people I love. The thing is, when they retaliate, it hurts you so much worse to know that you technically deserve it. Not to switch topics, but I think this is one of the most beautiful aspects of the notion of Jesus sacrificing himself for our sins; when you know you deserve punishment for something you’ve done, when you’ve wronged someone you love, but they refuse to act like you by striking back? When, instead, they let you know they love you no matter what and wouldn’t hurt you ever? It highlights just how ugly our own personal nature can be at times. I think this film does a great job of showing the ramifications of a relationship where neither party has this Christ-like love, and instead do a tit for tat series of revenge plots and emotional counter attacks, because well… that’s human nature. And it hurts to see that, so badly, and the knife is twisted even further when you realize the characters are almost like mirror reflections of your own life (albeit without the serious political aspects/ life and death implications for some actions).
I watched Cold War a couple of years ago with Joanna Kulig and never forgot this song she sang so beautifully. I just heard her sing again in the movie, "Ida" She is an amazing talent.
Two little hearts, four eyes which cry all day, all night dark little eyes which cry that you cannot meet Mum has forbidden me to love a boy but I throw my arms around his neck will love till I die I will love till I die

The way the camera movement and the lighting center on her, along with the singing and the acting, made her a goddess. Masterful!

Woou... this one scene is a complete masterpiece, imagine the entire film.
This movie is such a stunningly gorgeous work in retrospect.
I couldn't stop crying when I arrived at this scene. It was so profoundly powerful and gorgeous. Masterwork.
one of the most beautiful movies i ever see in my entire life, amazing!!!

I was infuriated of being so naive, when I realised no other ending could have come.
People are so horrible to the ones they love. It’s such a hard watch seeing an entire life of pain end like that

Dos corazones, cuatro ojos
Oh querido…
Que lloran durante la noche
Oh querida…
