I have a price on my head, in West Africa. I was working as an undercover investigative journalist and fell foul of the government corruption I was looking into. I lived on and off in Nanning/Guangxi for 6 years and was never threatened by anybody; but I don’t have your public profile. However, a Chinese businessman in Sydney told me not long ago that if I don’t stop being critical of China: “your friends in China will suffer.” The threats against you are very unlikely to have anything to do with the Chinese Government; if they wanted to get rid of someone, they wouldn’t announce it first on the internet. Hence, it must be insane individuals who make these threats. That doesn’t mean they don’t have to be taken seriously: they might want to make themselves a name in the history books. But they know what’s going to happen to them should they actually attempt to do what they threaten to do; China is one of the most closely supervised/monitored/surveilled societies in the world. They will be found and executed. But forensic experience in Western countries shows that the death penalty is not an effective deterrent for mad people. It is a concern that the Chinese authorities, knowing about the death threats, are not taking any action. My advice would be to leave China; I think all foreigners should be evacuated from China, all trade with China should stop, all tourism with China should stop, except family-related, for humanitarian reasons. The West should forget about China, isolate it, leave them to their own devices.

I am an expat living in Thailand for 7+ years, I have had one situation with a Thai national coworker that got pretty bad but never to the level you are describing, I do work in the private security field and have a level of protection from the police and military contacts I work with, but if I had to deal with that type of harrassment I would put Thailand in my rearview mirror.. love the videos and keep up the good work, cover your six and be safe..

I was a military officer and flight surgeon for mostly F-15 & F-16 squadrons. Now practicing Emergency-Trauma medicine. I will often meet her there at the end of summer with her younger sister who's studying to become a veterinarian. And yes, we've, but mostly, I have "casually" meet up with or run into national and have had probing questions with a stranger in about every city we've visited. They are often confused because they have bought into the stereotype of American of color portrayed on the news but will proceed on with their questions. You see, I'm 6'1" black and look more like a wide receiver than a doctor or a pilot. This same individual or his lovely female partner seems to show up no matter which city we visited. They, like most Chinese, stranger, will ask to take a picture with you. I usually refuse, but I consent to my daughters. They are persistent and ask me why. not. My daughter answer for me in perfect Mandarin. "He's camera shy" but will leave off the part when I say that I'm not on display. So spies come in all forms. shapes and color. My parting message to my daughters has always been. although you''re studying and teaching American English to very privilege Neuvo-Rich Chinese kids. That they should be careful so as not to give me a reason to come back to China and start my own version of WW-3.
Last summer is most likely my last and final visit to China. Unless I'm sent there in some official fashion. But, it is a beautiful country. It has its problem but so are others. However, the U.S.A had better wake up soon and get on a more sound military as well as economic footing. Before it's too late.

Not all rich have this mind set but often do not take the correct action with money to honestly help people in a more fruitful way. That would require massive education in sociology economics and a number of other things. The big problem is most people only are able get that education as a "hobby" with money or great personal effort not as formal education to improve our growing global societies we all desperately need.

Once I had 10 chinese guys following me telling me they will kill me because I said to one streetseller to fuck off because he didn’t want to leave me alone with his dumb merchandise. Repeatedly screaming “stupid foreigner”, “I kill you” and that I should follow them to an alley. It happened in the busiest street in shanghai and nobody even batted an eye. Very nice. This is one of many stories in the 6 month period Ive lived there. Average 3 fucked up stories a week it was I reckon, not even counting the daily racism and weird experiences overall. Lovely country and lovely people, but the mentality in general is just completely messed up imo..

I've live in a mostly Chinese-community before, and I have a lot of contacts with Chinese since then, and to me, most Chinese are good people, intelligent, and hard-working.

What people all too often dismiss out of hand is how the murderous hateful part of the human equation is that "Man" more than often commits the most sinful and brutal acts against one another in the dark. They plot in the dark because they are cowards, not because they feel justified in their hate. I left the Philippines because of the same issues. The focus became "our problems" comes from the American's presents. There is an element in South East Asia that sees killing as a solution to whatever ills them. So I moved back to the US where many whites feel that it is not only their right to abuse non-whites but their responsibility to do so.
The morals in China died with Nationalists losing the civil war in 1940s. Going to Taipei right after Beijing, you realize how absolutely different the culture has become despite two cultures sharing basic identity. I've never experience as much angst from basic human interaction as I have in Beijing and Shanghai. At the same time, a similar experience, e.g. lining up in a subway or shopping, is one of the most pleasant experiences in Taiwan.

IMO, ethics more or less is at its brink of extinction globally. Moral, on the other hand, that's a troublesome word. Why? Let me give give some examples why I find the term 'moral' troublesome:
[1] in a secluded community of human beings for generations used to solely consume vegetation (plant lives only), when a stranger who comes in and eat MEAT, that stranger is "Morally" wrong.
[2] in a secluded community of human beings for generations used to solely consume meat, preferably 'rare', when a stranger who comes in and only eats plant lives, that stranger becomes "Morally" wrong.
[3] in a coastal community who plies their trade forcefully collecting unofficial taxes for every water vehicle that passes by the routes they 'guard', all resistors are automatically considered "morally" wrong, if they fail to cooperate and let the coastal community extract whatever taxes it pleases them.
[4] When Japan was still xenophobic, any Japanese who fails to continuously speak Japanese, even when they can speak 7 other different languages, outside their nation, are considered "morally" wrong.
My point is, MORAL, varies tragically, region to region, community to community. Therefore, moral, is an exceptionally inaccurate choice of measurement, unless one clearly define his/her concept of moral prior.

One of the most horrific thing I've seen on line was a video a friend shared many years ago from China of a small child being run over by a service van on a side street and local people watched as if nothing had happened. Still baffled till this day as to how anyone can see something like that and just ignore it.
By the way you do a great job of putting China in a good light and that's good but you will realise one day that there are some things that you will not be able to explain or understand about the Chinese.

The problem is with China just like he says it's 99% of the time safe, but when it's not safe the 1% of the time you can't expect any help. I’m American, however it’s refreshing to see the cultures WITHOUT A POLITICAL AGENDA, and I truly appreciate your vlogs! I enjoy learning about other countries, and because of your channel you have given me that opportunity. I’m lucky as I was probably one of the last generations to grow up in a school environment that didn’t focus on testing and actually cared about learning. When I was in elementary school we used to have one week where we learned about everyone heritage, REGARDLESS OF WHERE WE CAME FROM. African, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Middle Eastern, or European - so Swedish, German, French - etc. and we were taught TO BE PROUD, regardless! We had a potluck brought a dish, we even had a day to wear traditional dress from the country that our grandparents, or parents came from. Now today that would NEVER HAPPEN in schools, they don’t even teach about European or Asian history. They focus on “tolerance” of religion- which was never brought up when I was in school! And of course testing, for common core. It’s why half the kids are illiterate here. And why we homeschool. And why kids don’t appreciate learning.
So thank you, I believe if more people actually got out and lived in other places, saw the world & the people this whole world would be a better place. Americans included!

I'm an old guy and veteran of the Cold War in U.S. Army Military Intelligence who was stationed in the Philippines (67-69) At Clark, AFB and charged with spying on the Red China and Communist Vietnam by electronic means- and about only Westerners in China in those days were diplomats who were restricted in travel...Today the picture has changed and it would appear Ex-Pat Westerners and tourists are crawling all the PRC! This a good thing....a very good thing because it makes it hard to hate a people you know so well and learned to understand and respect.. Of course, Chinese Mainlanders are crawling all over this country as well - and thousands attend college here and get to know Americans very well. This is a cultural exchange that is AWESOME! A poet once said, "East is east and west is west and never the twain shall meet." Today thanks to improved travel by plane, train, bus and car - The East has met the West and discovered people are the same everywhere: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly.

Like SerpentZA, I have lived in China a long time, not too far away from Shenzhen in a city called Zhongshan so I'd like to add a comment to all the people below who ask the question: Why stay in China? or something similar. As Serpent states, over and over again, it's a great place to live. There are some negative aspects, the smoking, the littering, the scams, but they don't affect the day to day life we lead. Our jobs are great, interesting, well paid and the cost of living is lower. Unlike Serpent, I have bought an apartment, it's an older apartment so hasn't fallen to bits yet and the cost was about 1 tenth of what I would pay in my native country, the UK, or my adopted country, Australia. The friends I've made in China, the family that has taken me into their lives when I married their daughter, the people I meet every day and the ability to live, and travel almost anywhere in the region cheaply and quickly all make China a great place to live. After almost 15 years of living here, I don't think I would want to live anywhere else. I have experienced some xenophobia, but it's rare, I experience some form of racism almost every day, but then I imagine what it would have been like to have been coloured in most countries of the world 25 or more years ago - probably still experiencing racism if the truth be known. I don't think it's so bad that I would uproot my life and my family to move away.
Those of you who have contemplated a trip to China, those of you who have been looking into the prospects of working in China, I promise you, your experience, should you decide to go ahead, will be unforgettable and, it's quite likely that after a year or two of working here, you'll be the same as me. I came in 2004 for an 8 month contract yet, here we are, 2019 and still here - there must be good reasons for that - think about it.
As an adjunct to this, I should point out that I've travelled more in China than most Chinese people, I've visited almost every province (only 4 more to tick off the entire list) I've met literally thousands of locals, minorities, rural residents and people in the capital cities, China really is a great place. Get outside of the artificially westernised places like Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen. Even travelling around Guangdong into places like Maoming, Lianzhou, dozens of other towns and cities that no one has ever heard of and you'll see the real China, the China that Serpent talks about as being great - it's all there waiting for you. All these are within a day trip of HK or Macau, imagine what it's like to visit places like Ningxia and Gansu, which take 4 or five hours to fly - or, in my case, two months to ride a bike there - you will really enjoy if you have the opportunity to try. Sorry about the long reply, perhaps I should start my own blog page :)
