Winston's videos saved me from the tea scam in Shanghai last year. I was in the "old" town (which doesn't look old at all but looks like a corny amusement park for tourists) and a girl asked me to take her photo and then started chatting me up, claiming she was a tourist as well. I didn't suspect anything until she suggested going to see a tea ceremony down the street... then my serpentZA training kicked in and I said I was busy and left. I returned to the same place 10 mins later and she was there looking for another victim. I'm glad I was prepared, but it's still a big blow when you realize people who seem friendly are trying to screw you and you have to initially keep your guard up with everyone you meet.
The first time I went to China in the early 2000's I got tea scammed after 2 girls approached me in a KFC wanting to "exchange language" because they saw me reading a study book. How the story unfolded gets interesting from there involving a local friend, police and mafia. But I was so pissed from the experience that I booked a return flight to Canada for 2 days later vowing never to return. My friend said too bad because had I have stayed a few days longer he thought I could get my money back. Visa eventually reversed the charge with a police report I filed. Ironically I returned to China for several more years.

True story, my brother visited New York and while being at a store he forgot his cellphone at the counter, he walked across one streed to a elevator to get up to the subway (was a very wide road he said), while as he came out the elevator at top he noticed the woman behind the counter down at the street waving with the phone to him. So she had taken the phone and ran after him to give it back to him. He was so very thankful and offered to pay her some money for the kindness, she did not want any money but he insisted and paid her some for it, and said she saved his day by doing that.
She didn’t help for money. She helped, for respect of others, community, and herself. To honour her, pass it on. Do good deeds, for others. And say, pass it forward, when you do.
@@billpetersen298 I know she did not, and my brother knows that as well, but she made his day and he felt she deserved atleast some money as a nice gesture not that he needed to, as he said to me.. he was sure she could have put the phone at some lost and found office and been done with that.. and quite possible he could not have had his phone back (note this was no iphone or expensive phone) and in all honesty sure he could do without it but he was happy and felt she did something good.
I once found a wallet in the men’s washroom in MET. I found some IDs, I called the number on the business card found in the wallet, spoke to the owner and returned his wallet. He shaked my hand so many times.

When I was a kid I almost got kidnapped back in China. A guy straight up came up to me and said (in Chinese) "Little friend, come with me." I pretended to follow him. When he had turned around I went the other way. After a while I turned to look back at him. He was still walking as if I was following him. He was a few metres from a white van. I then left. When he got there he probably realized his attempt had failed. But remember that they have no sense of panic or shame. When one attempt fails, they try to go for another one. "I'll try X times today, if it doesn't work, no sweat." When my family was in China someone offered to pull our luggage for us if we paid them money. My dad did not want to go for it but my mom actually paid him. He said "I'll go over the bridge, you guys can go on the road below." Big red flag, he is clearly trying to steal the luggage. There is no legitimate reason for intentionally trying to split up. My dad argued with him. Finally he agreed to go on the road below with my family. But instead of going on the sidewalk like a normal person, he intentionally went in the middle of the road where there was heavy traffic. My dad yelled for him to come back. My dad even offered to pay him to come back and cancel their arrangement. By the time my family got the luggage back there was a long cut on one of the cases made by a utility knife. However, since the case was extra durable, the knife did not actually penetrate the outer layer. The worst part is that he was very visibly trying to cut it. He wasn't even trying to be subtle. There was a deep gash that penetrated the cloth layer but got stopped by the underlying plastic layer. He would repeat the cut time after time with no luck.
Well, my experience was different. I was accompanying my ex a Chinese to help her finish her Bar exam application. I didn’t enter the building, just waited outside. Then there was a little girl who came running to me and just said nihao, nishi waiguo renma. I said yes in Chinese and asked her where her parents were, and she said she don’t know. In a sudden, an old couple came and asked me if i know the kid and i said nope. And told them she wants to find her parents. Then they tried to take the kid, but she was hesitating them. So i stopped them and said we better wait for police to come and they were like no we can help her. Luckily the security guard came to see what was happening. I told him everything and he called the police. After a while my gf came and started panicking cos there were many Chinese around me. But anyways i hope that kid is safe now. This happened back in 2016, around the g20 time.
no offense, but often times I find women in the west are so gullible when it comes to their own safety be it political issues or social events (maybe because they grew up in a safe environment )

There's a Romanian youtuber named Vee who periodically talks about how under the Communist regime there, all news of bad things was routinely suppressed, to a degree that people there also thought they lived in the safest country in the world. They were then shocked! SHOCKED! when their house was burgled, for example, because they left the doors unlocked because nothing bad ever happened so what's the worry about?
In Romania everyone knew about the securitate and that they could be your neighbour or family member. They also knew how corrupt he police were, since the police let a lot of crime happen. People got away with theft because the police knew how hungry and poor the people were. The people also knew about how proliferate the mafia were and how corrupt the government was, which resulted in the revolution. They knew about the persecution of Christians, but they did not understand the persecution of gypsies because there were bad gypsies who robbed people and the good gypsies were then, discriminated and lumped into the same group. The Communist regime tried to make it all look wonderful, but the people it was not wonderful. They were starving too much and in too much poverty.

Being factually correct doesn't mean trueness. It could also mean selective reporting. Winston is doing a great job of informing us what modern China really is like. But there is also a newspaper in the USA called The Epoch Times that is written by Chinese people who have escaped China because of persecution and now have inside sources that explain a lot of what's going on in China (plus they have articles also on what's really going on in the USA- something not easy to find here these days). It is well written and very eye-opening. Give it a try- which you can do either online or get a free example newspaper.

Same dude, I've lived in Shanghai for 3 years, and Hong Kong for 5. During my stay in Shanghai I've witnessed a lot of scary/dangerous situations, despite feeling safe there, I knew that I had to keep my eyes out. People have attempted to scam, pickpocket me or one of my friends several times throughout the years. Also, at some residency I lived on the 18th floor I heard loud screaming outside, so when I went down to check it out the elevator was covered in blood everywhere, it was literally a scene out of a horror movie. There was a path of blood that led from the elevator to outside, and suddenly a guy walked past me from behind..my Chinese isn't good but I asked him if he was ok, he looked at me full of hate and spit on the ground in front of me and left. I literally think that guy killed someone there... I did walk up to the security entrance of the residency and they didn't care at all, took them a long time before they followed me. Another time I witnessed like a group of 30 guys chasing after one guy, and once they got to him they beat him up really badly. I wanted to interfere and help out, but a Chinese friend next to me said it is too dangerous. Called the police but they left by the time they arrived. Another time I went to Wuhan, stayed at a really kind Chinese family's home for 2 weeks. One day we left the premise for lunch and when we came back the entire home was robbed. All the family Jewellery etc. After checking security cameras, we found they stalked me from far for several days since I am a foreigner...so when they noticed we went out, they robbed the place and fled the city. They lived in that home for 30+ years and it never happened before... so yeah, that just few of many scary/weird things that have happened to me while living there for 3 years. But that's not to say I dislike Chinese people, have a lot of friends there, love the traditional culture and food, but like any other country there are always some problems, but with China some things are rather extreme like discussed in this video. And it's true regarding censorship, it's very obvious on sites like Weibo, any video that blames the HK protestors for violence or fake things that didn't happen can stay, but whenever someone uploads a video regarding people standing together, or police mistakes, or any news that talks about any mistake or problem from China, the video gets removed and/or account banned within several minutes. Censorship system is insane there.
Yes it looks like you have to especially watch out when someone bumps you in person or on a vehicle, that's when they make their move to steal from you.

That culture of censorship is spreading all over the world especially places with Chinese company. I have experience working in such environment where nobody wants to bear responsibility and any criticism or reports are silence to maintain status quo...or saving face. But the bad thing is if error are made unknown and not corrected...it will get worse and someday so bad a simple bad habit will become a mega-disaster.

The fact that every residential building in every city in China has barred windows for a minimum of at least the lowest six floors might suggest something. Either the lower floors of every condo are occupied by criminals and he bars are to keep them detained, OR there just might be a small burglary problem.

I guess growing up in Beijing I seldom realize how privileged I am compared to the rest of China. Yes, Beijing has problems but the smaller cities and rural areas have it much worse. And because the media doesn’t report on them for a long time I thought the whole of China is just like Beijing. The CCP wants to make Beijing look as good as possible as part of their “save face” thing, and they have sacrificed the development of other areas for it. And to think that some Beijinger pride themselves for being “the royal people living under the palace” is crazy. The illusion that ordinary citizens can benefit from CCP rule is false and dangerous.

The CCP deliberately targets Chinese living overseas, especially in America. One problem is that so many Mandarin speakers end up watching CGTN and other official (censored) because there are not that many other Mandarin outlets.
OR Hollywood has distorted their view of what the US offers and they realize THAT THEIR GOVT IN CHINA IS NOT THAT BAD. I have seen this first hand in my top 10 ranking University classmates from China. Very pro-American at the beginning, less so after interacting with real Americans, defending China by the time they get a job in the US, PRO-CHINA after working for 5 years in the US and facing workplace discrimination in promotions and bonuses. Most now work for Chinese firms and a lot have moved back to China. And to think they were very pro-American in the beginning....
My father in law is constantly calling my wife to move back to China because Colorado is just too unsafe. It’s caused a lot tension in our family. Even before COVID we could never get him to come visit because he felt it was unsafe. There is crime here but I’ve experienced much more petty crime and being a target of crime in China than at home. I had two scooters stolen, creepy dudes hanging around my apartment and someone tried to steal my wife’s car.
I am going to say what you probably won’t like: your marriage is at stake. Family ties are extremely crucial in China. Your Chinese wife can’t and won’t revolt your father in law’s commands. At this rate it won’t be long until your wife try to convince you and drag your ass to China. If you don’t like it then you are likely to part ways. I am sure of this because I am an immigrant. I remember a video of a little girl being run over in an alleyway in China and dozens of people just not caring and just walking past while she was still alive but broken.
It was a real problem for a while, because horrid people would fake it to accuse the people helping of being the ones who did it. It's gotten better, but people would rather kill the person than help them, because the penalty for accidentally killing someone is less than injuring someone.

A wholesome story from when I was in Guangzhou, my girlfriend dropped her passport in the taxi we were in. She only noticed about 30 minutes later. We managed to find the licence plate number from a picture we took just before getting in the taxi. The guy drove 40 minutes to where we were staying in the end and he tried his hardest refuse all payment.

I have never liked China mainly due to it being lead by an authoritarian government. Your videos, especially the ones since you have left china, are eye opening and in a sense important. This is not only China. This could be any authoritarian government. This is something we have to work worldwide to avoid falling victim to.
China has evolved from a authoritarian country to a meritocratic nation. This is what Deng Ziao Peng when he said 'Socialism with Chinese characteristics'. This is the reason why China has grown to 2nd largest economy in the world in a very short time because of this meritocratic system where the brightest and the ablest run the government. This is the system which resulted in 4 Golden Ages in Chinese Civilization.This is not to say that no mistakes have been done but taken both the negative and positive aspects of this regime nobody can argue that it has not benefit the Chinese people substantially.

True story when I lived in China: In the early 90s when motorcycle was something quite new. My dad went to a coach for a license for motorcycle. He got quite close with the coach and during a small talk, the coach said to him, I recommend you not ride motorcycle at all because all my students from the past ten years, all of them died, died of accidents. He wasn't joking. So my dad told me about the story and kept his license in the drawer. Serpenzas video just reminds me of what a mess the streets in China still remain after this many years.
I agree with you that there were bad things that happened in early 90s but there were many aspects of China that have improved since then. During Mao's time there were no tourist in the whole of China but in 2018, 120 million Chinese left and came back to China as tourists. This is not to say that China now is perfect country but nobody can argue that standard of living of the Chinese people have improved substantially.

my brother once left the door open and my sister at the age of 2 went out. her mouse squeak shoes was gone. me and my mum ran out and saw a woman holding my sister talking my my school friend. Apparently the woman was helping my sister find her family. she figured that a 2 year old shouldn't be alone outside of the house. If this was china, my sister will be gone for good.
When my father was touring China for business, in 1986, he was out with a business official one day... as well as one plain clothed guard. When the official noticed several young men following my father, dressed in his ankle length wool coat with fur collar... The official said something to his guard. The plain clothed man stepped to the boys, reached in his pocket and then flashed the boys a badge... The young men's faces lit up and they ran the other direction in a shot! Foreign businessmen were /are a common target and thankfully my dad had some help that moment. At other times, my dad says he traveled with uniformed soldiers! :-O He says everyone stared but kept a good distance away. :-)

I've lost my phone 3 times 1. Seoul, South Korea: train station: someone returned it to lost and found 2. Singapore taxi: paid with credit card and able to trace taxi and taxi driver returned it 3. New York taxi: driver answered and returned the phone.
I have personally returned one phone dropped by a girl on a bike in kyoto, i had to sprint after her like a madman since she had headphones on and didnt know she had dropped it. god knows what she thought with a westerner with terrible japanese language ability chasing her down like the T1000 in terminator haha! I have also done the same but only needed to walk briskly as a japanese young couple on foot, the girls purse fell out of her bag and narrowly avoided a taxi running over it. I believe all decent and normal people would do the same. I also saw a guy leave his phone on a train in japan, and another quickly snatch it up and dash off the traiin, shouting "EXCUSE ME!" to get the guys attention to turn around. he waved the phone at the dude from like 20 metres away and in plain view placed it leaning against a pillar so he could get back on the train before it left while making the guy aware of where his phone was lol. This is the kind of people we need to live around. not the taxi driver that winston and his mate had =(

I travelled through China last May on a Canadian Passport and was hassled at the Guangzhou & Chengdu airports just waiting for my connections. I was taken by police and interrogated 4 times where I was asked over and over again why I did not have a visa even though I did not need one transiting through the country. I was photographed, fingerprinted and yelled at in chinese for 20 minutes at a time. All while the two Michaels are taken hostage for the huaiwai Ms Meung who has been arrested in Vancouver.. They are behaving as if they are at war...Glad to get out of there...
So true, I had a co-worker who spent three weeks in China on a tour, when he returned we were comparing vacations ( I had traveled to Bangkok via Hong Kong ) and the subject of the Hong Kong protest came up, he responded, What protest?, And told me in my face that there was no news in China about that and it was all made up, I then responded , Tell that to the people in Hong Kong, he's such a tool.

On my second trip ever to Copenhagen, it happened to be during the 2009 UN Climate Conference in December. My wife (girlfriend at the time) lived not too far from central Copenhagen, and she actually happened to know one of the high ranking officials in the police department in Copenhagen (he might have been the chief, I don't remember). Well we went into the city, saw all the sights, and had a rather enjoyable time seeing the beautiful city. One evening, back at her apartment, we had the news on, it was CNN International, and they were covering the climate conference and they showed "violent protests" in central Copenhagen. It looked like a mess, and quite scary. But as I saw the footage, I realized it was an area we had visited that day. We saw nothing like that when we were there. We were a bit puzzled by it. This type of thing was happening every day on the news, but we never saw anything that resembled those protests, even though we were all around those areas. The day before I left, we saw my wife's police friend and his wife. So I asked him about all the protests. He said what happens is a group of 100 to 200 people will show up at an area, unannounced, and then start a ten minute "riot". The news crews will hear about this and rush their cameras right into the middle of these groups that are holding a planned riot to get their footage. As the crews are standing in the middle of the group, it makes it appear much, much, bigger than it really is. Then, after about ten minutes, they finish and disperse. Maybe a handful or so of the rioters will get arrested. But overall the protests were quite small, short, and relatively tame. But the way the news covered it, and by positioning the cameras right in the middle of the groups, they looked far bigger and more violent than they were. The news would then keep showing 10-30 second clips of these protests and made it look like Copenhagen was under siege, when the reality was the overwhelming majority of people had no idea anything was happening. Edit - I really enjoy your videos. Many of the experiences you share are similar to what I experienced during my three years in China. One day, when I was in Haikou, there was a man lying on the sidewalk with blood coming from his head. Nobody was helping him, everyone was just standing there looking at him, including a police officer. Following my western instincts, I started to move towards him to see if I could help, but the police officer waved me off and told me to go away. So I did. But I was shocked at the dismissiveness of the Chinese people to a man who was clearly in need of help.
Good on you to try and help an injured person. I have no idea how Chinese culture is, so if anyone could explain why they let injured people die, I'd be thankful.

When I was there last year, the locals said that crime was alive and well, either batteries or entire motor bikes being stolen. With all the security cameras, face recognition and surveillance at their disposal, why is it that the Chinese authorities are unwilling or unable to tackle crime?
@@aoeu256 Everyone was aware of this and had special locking plates made up to go over the battery. They would break into a garage to get a new motor bike.

You are forbidden access to tons of outlets, sharing tons of information, strictly censored, etc. Beyond politics, it has all the problems that comes with mass poverty, lack of sanitation, clean air, poor infrastructure, extreme violations of human rights, and then some.

C-Milk's recent post about the thief guilds in China certainly gives a different perspective on crime in China vs. the U. S. According to his report, theft in China is absolutely rampant - including human theft (I. E. kidnapping and human trafficking) - crimes that are virtually *unheard* of in The States. If you go to the actual crime statistics, from state agencies or the DOJ, you find that the U. S. is one of the *safest* places to live! Part of this also has to do with the fact that Americans tend to be more open and friendly. We generally get to know our neighbors, and then we watch out for each other. Also, since there generally isn't an overriding political entity (in most places - with far left-leaning places like Chicago, New York City, Portland, Seattle, L. A., etc. being notable exceptions), officials aren't incentivized to cover up, and/or to at least tolerate crime. Here in western Palm Beach County, I can safely walk my dog at any hour of the day or night. If a policeman or woman does cruise by, they generally just wave, and I'll wave back. Safe, quiet, and peaceful is the absolute norm. I like it this way. It's a state of being that most of China can only *dream* about.
Didn't Us have so many missing children that their photos were shown on milk cartons? The numbers were shocking if I recall. Could some of them have been trafficked? I've no doubt some were found but human trafficking is a massive global network and no country is free of it.

That's why they put the pictures on milk cartons - assuming that the parent who has the child is going to let them play with other kids, and if one of those other kids sees the picture, he or she will tell someone. Outright stranger kidnapping is extraordinarily rare. If one does happen, it's usually nation wide news. As a matter of fact, the U. S. has a nationwide "Amber Alert" system, such that, if a child is abducted, text alerts are broadcast to all cellphones in the area - an incredibly effective system and (for the most part) solution.

Oh my God, the police chief of Seattle has said that they’ve been forbidden by the mayor from using even non-lethal force against ‘protesters’ (really rioters). In one of my two week-long visits to Beijing, I saw a motorcyclist being hit in traffic( what are the odds of that? I’m 63, and only once before in my life watched a motorbiker being hit in traffic). The thing that shocked me the most in China is the unwillingness to help other people because of the fear to be unfairly sued and to be in trouble ; and the kidnapping of young children then the selling of them to rural people. The unsafety in China is one the topic that strucked me the most in my entire life.

The part about them preventing you from sending that picture probably has less to do with the actual image itself, but more so the EXIF data. China was probably scanning all the EXIF data on images sent over their networks and blocking anything that came from that area. Many image processors will delete that EXIF data to reduce the file size, which is probably why you could then send it. Even just converting the file from one format to another would probably have been enough.
Checking Exif is old school. Google, Facbook, Twitter etc.. Have AIs that scans all photos and blocks those they dislike.. UA-cam scans all Audio and Comments. (UA-cam just banned every comment I wrote about a riot attack using a SAW in Portland, any more detail and this gets deleted) If they do all this to mess with Poltics etc. then China does the same to control their country..

Nothing offensive in it to normal people.. Many comments are being deleted for saying certain negative things about a certain three letter group.. And when they delete a comment youtube then checks all of your comments for days at the least and bans many that would have been fine before... They are very protective of the group and not mentioning the bad things they are doing.. I can't mention the baby whos neck crushed under a person of that group while they said negative things about light coloured people such as the baby.. (I can't mention colors in comments without high chances of deletion at the moment). Now I get to wait and see if this post stays up, it's all true but they don't like truth it seems..
When detailing and discussing local crime, America's newspaper and local broadcasters are much more transparent than in China. That was pretty clearly his intended comparison.
Like I said before in other comments, most of us South Africans have no idea about wokeness or far left propaganda taking over the west. It's virtually non-existent, with only a few exceptions. (Unisex bathrooms on University Campuses for example) We still have the classic 'American Dream' mentality when it comes to the US. Give it time, he will learn. I did, took me forever, but I did.

When I'm in the US we live in a predominantly white area, no urban city, there we're allowed to conceal carry, but unless we go out on a trip there is no need to carry.
218philip I live in Shanghai and feel perfectly safe here compared to where I grew up. My wife is chinese and told me all the bad things/ all the things to be careful for, but I can walk at night and not be scared of being raped or attacked. All my expat friends agree when they go home to various places in America, Canada and Europe they forget that hey now there’s things you really need to be conscious of. I’ve travelled all over Asia and China. I do believe the non- tier 1 cities are sketchy- the provinces around shanghai feel the safest, but I’ve been in the middle of nowhere and met some really good people. It’s all perspective.
Oveida Sinclair I’m from Winnipeg. I live in China now, I’ve travelled the world. And the safest I’ve felt is in Asia. Chinese people know all the bad things like the rest of the world, but as a woman a white dude is the first to attack you. As a woman here I feel safe; I’ve seen somethings but I don’t think Canada or the USA is more safe. I do believe lower tier cities are sketchy here and prefer to stay closer to shanghai. I had a bad experience in Beijing and not that I felt unsafe in any other areas in China, it’s just not the same feeling. But like anywhere you meet good and bad people. If I spoke this way like the video about China my wife would be furious. I’m also married to a chinese woman. Like in turn she won’t say bad things about North America or my culture.
Two nice stories from China. I forgot my phone in a taxi. The taxi driver called the last called number and I got it back. It was late at night and the taxi driver asked for 100rmb to drive back downtown, which I gladly payed. Another time, I forgot my backpack on the subway in Shanghai, I panicked and tried to locate it to no avail. A random good samaritan called me 4 hours later, my number was on a form in my backpack, which was very lucky. He waited over an hour for me to ride back downtown and pick it up and didn’t want anything for his help. Bearing in mind, neither one of these times I had anything very valuable.

Winston's videos saved me from the tea scam in Shanghai last year. I was in the "old" town (which doesn't look old at all but looks like a corny amusement park for tourists) and a girl asked me to take her photo and then started chatting me up, claiming she was a tourist as well. I didn't suspect anything until she suggested going to see a tea ceremony down the street... then my serpentZA training kicked in and I said I was busy and left. I returned to the same place 10 mins later and she was there looking for another victim. I'm glad I was prepared, but it's still a big blow when you realize people who seem friendly are trying to screw you and you have to initially keep your guard up with everyone you meet.

The first time I went to China in the early 2000's I got tea scammed after 2 girls approached me in a KFC wanting to "exchange language" because they saw me reading a study book. How the story unfolded gets interesting from there involving a local friend, police and mafia. But I was so pissed from the experience that I booked a return flight to Canada for 2 days later vowing never to return. My friend said too bad because had I have stayed a few days longer he thought I could get my money back. Visa eventually reversed the charge with a police report I filed. Ironically I returned to China for several more years.

For SO LONG in the USA we sold out to China and ignored what was really going on there because we wanted to make $$$ (Cheap labor for manufacturers, HUGE market for Hollywood and the NBA). In fact, you'd be attacked or brushed off as a conspiracy theorist if you tried to point out the bad things that the CCP was doing to its own people. True story, my brother visited New York and while being at a store he forgot his cellphone at the counter, he walked across one streed to a elevator to get up to the subway (was a very wide road he said), while as he came out the elevator at top he noticed the woman behind the counter down at the street waving with the phone to him. So she had taken the phone and ran after him to give it back to him. He was so very thankful and offered to pay her some money for the kindness, she did not want any money but he insisted and paid her some for it, and said she saved his day by doing that.
She didn’t help for money. She helped, for respect of others, community, and herself.
To honour her, pass it on. Do good deeds, for others. And say, pass it forward, when you do.

@@billpetersen298 I know she did not, and my brother knows that as well, but she made his day and he felt she deserved atleast some money as a nice gesture not that he needed to, as he said to me.. he was sure she could have put the phone at some lost and found office and been done with that.. and quite possible he could not have had his phone back (note this was no iphone or expensive phone) and in all honesty sure he could do without it but he was happy and felt she did something good.
I once found a wallet in the men’s washroom in MET. I found some IDs, I called the number on the business card found in the wallet, spoke to the owner and returned his wallet. He shaked my hand so many times.

When I was a kid I almost got kidnapped back in China. A guy straight up came up to me and said (in Chinese) "Little friend, come with me." I pretended to follow him. When he had turned around I went the other way. After a while I turned to look back at him. He was still walking as if I was following him. He was a few metres from a white van. I then left.
When he got there he probably realized his attempt had failed. But remember that they have no sense of panic or shame. When one attempt fails, they try to go for another one. "I'll try X times today, if it doesn't work, no sweat."
When my family was in China someone offered to pull our luggage for us if we paid them money. My dad did not want to go for it but my mom actually paid him. He said "I'll go over the bridge, you guys can go on the road below." Big red flag, he is clearly trying to steal the luggage. There is no legitimate reason for intentionally trying to split up. My dad argued with him. Finally he agreed to go on the road below with my family. But instead of going on the sidewalk like a normal person, he intentionally went in the middle of the road where there was heavy traffic. My dad yelled for him to come back. My dad even offered to pay him to come back and cancel their arrangement. By the time my family got the luggage back there was a long cut on one of the cases made by a utility knife. However, since the case was extra durable, the knife did not actually penetrate the outer layer.
The worst part is that he was very visibly trying to cut it. He wasn't even trying to be subtle. There was a deep gash that penetrated the cloth layer but got stopped by the underlying plastic layer. He would repeat the cut time after time with no luck.
Such blatant criminality would have made my blood boil.
Well, my experience was different. I was accompanying my ex a Chinese to help her finish her Bar exam application. I didn’t enter the building, just waited outside. Then there was a little girl who came running to me and just said nihao, nishi waiguo renma. I said yes in Chinese and asked her where her parents were, and she said she don’t know. In a sudden, an old couple came and asked me if i know the kid and i said nope. And told them she wants to find her parents. Then they tried to take the kid, but she was hesitating them. So i stopped them and said we better wait for police to come and they were like no we can help her. Luckily the security guard came to see what was happening. I told him everything and he called the police. After a while my gf came and started panicking cos there were many Chinese around me. But anyways i hope that kid is safe now. This happened back in 2016, around the g20 time.

They were then shocked! SHOCKED! when their house was burgled, for example, because they left the doors unlocked because nothing bad ever happened so what's the worry about?
In Romania everyone knew about the securitate and that they could be your neighbour or family member. They also knew how corrupt he police were, since the police let a lot of crime happen. People got away with theft because the police knew how hungry and poor the people were. The people also knew about how proliferate the mafia were and how corrupt the government was, which resulted in the revolution. They knew about the persecution of Christians, but they did not understand the persecution of gypsies because there were bad gypsies who robbed people and the good gypsies were then, discriminated and lumped into the same group. Same dude, I've lived in Shanghai for 3 years, and Hong Kong for 5. During my stay in Shanghai I've witnessed a lot of scary/dangerous situations, despite feeling safe there, I knew that I had to keep my eyes out. People have attempted to scam, pickpocket me or one of my friends several times throughout the years. Also, at some residency I lived on the 18th floor I heard loud screaming outside, so when I went down to check it out the elevator was covered in blood everywhere, it was literally a scene out of a horror movie. There was a path of blood that led from the elevator to outside, and suddenly a guy walked past me from behind..my Chinese isn't good but I asked him if he was ok, he looked at me full of hate and spit on the ground in front of me and left. I literally think that guy killed someone there... I did walk up to the security entrance of the residency and they didn't care at all, took them a long time before they followed me. Another time I witnessed like a group of 30 guys chasing after one guy, and once they got to him they beat him up really badly. I wanted to interfere and help out, but a Chinese friend next to me said it is too dangerous. Called the police but they left by the time they arrived. Another time I went to Wuhan, stayed at a really kind Chinese family's home for 2 weeks. One day we left the premise for lunch and when we came back the entire home was robbed. All the family Jewellery etc. After checking security cameras, we found they stalked me from far for several days since I am a foreigner...so when they noticed we went out, they robbed the place and fled the city. They lived in that home for 30+ years and it never happened before... so yeah, that just few of many scary/weird things that have happened to me while living there for 3 years. But that's not to say I dislike Chinese people, have a lot of friends there, love the traditional culture and food, but like any other country there are always some problems, but with China some things are rather extreme like discussed in this video. And it's true regarding censorship, it's very obvious on sites like Weibo, any video that blames the HK protestors for violence or fake things that didn't happen can stay, but whenever someone uploads a video regarding people standing together, or police mistakes, or any news that talks about any mistake or problem from China, the video gets removed and/or account banned within several minutes. Censorship system is insane there.

I have experience working in such environment where nobody wants to bear responsibility and any criticism or reports are silence to maintain status quo...or saving face. I guess growing up in Beijing I seldom realize how privileged I am compared to the rest of China. Yes, Beijing has problems but the smaller cities and rural areas have it much worse. And because the media doesn’t report on them for a long time I thought the whole of China is just like Beijing. The CCP wants to make Beijing look as good as possible as part of their “save face” thing, and they have sacrificed the development of other areas for it. And to think that some Beijinger pride themselves for being “the royal people living under the palace” is crazy. The illusion that ordinary citizens can benefit from CCP rule is false and dangerous.

Consequently, many of them lost their belief that working as a farmer was somehow the highest form of devotion to communism. My father in law is constantly calling my wife to move back to China because Colorado is just too unsafe. It’s caused a lot tension in our family. Even before COVID we could never get him to come visit because he felt it was unsafe. There is crime here but I’ve experienced much more petty crime and being a target of crime in China than at home. A wholesome story from when I was in Guangzhou, my girlfriend dropped her passport in the taxi we were in. She only noticed about 30 minutes later. We managed to find the licence plate number from a picture we took just before getting in the taxi.

I have never liked China mainly due to it being lead by an authoritarian government. Your videos, especially the ones since you have left china, are eye opening and in a sense important. This is not only China. This could be any authoritarian government. This is something we have to work worldwide to avoid falling victim to.

True story when I lived in China: In the early 90s when motorcycle was something quite new. My dad went to a coach for a license for motorcycle. He got quite close with the coach and during a small talk, the coach said to him, I recommend you not ride motorcycle at all because all my students from the past ten years, all of them died, died of accidents. He wasn't joking. So my dad told me about the story and kept his license in the drawer. Serpenzas video just reminds me of what a mess the streets in China still remain after this many years.
I agree with you that there were bad things that happened in early 90s but there were many aspects of China that have improved since then. During Mao's time there were no tourist in the whole of China but in 2018, 120 million Chinese left and came back to China as tourists. This is not to say that China now is perfect country but nobody can argue that standard of living of the Chinese people have improved substantially.

my brother once left the door open and my sister at the age of 2 went out. her mouse squeak shoes was gone. me and my mum ran out and saw a woman holding my sister talking my my school friend. Apparently the woman was helping my sister find her family. she figured that a 2 year old shouldn't be alone outside of the house.

When my father was touring China for business, in 1986, he was out with a business official one day... as well as one plain clothed guard. When the official noticed several young men following my father, dressed in his ankle length wool coat with fur collar... The official said something to his guard. The plain clothed man stepped to the boys, reached in his pocket and then flashed the boys a badge... The young men's faces lit up and they ran the other direction in a shot! Foreign businessmen were /are a common target and thankfully my dad had some help that moment. At other times, my dad says he traveled with uniformed soldiers! :-O He says everyone stared but kept a good distance away. :-)

I've lost my phone 3 times
1. Seoul, South Korea: train station: someone returned it to lost and found
2. Singapore taxi: paid with credit card and able to trace taxi and taxi driver returned it
3. New York taxi: driver answered and returned the phone.

I have personally returned one phone dropped by a girl on a bike in kyoto, i had to sprint after her like a madman since she had headphones on and didnt know she had dropped it. god knows what she thought with a westerner with terrible japanese language ability chasing her down like the T1000 in terminator haha! I have also done the same but only needed to walk briskly as a japanese young couple on foot, the girls purse fell out of her bag and narrowly avoided a taxi running over it. I believe all decent and normal people would do the same. I also saw a guy leave his phone on a train in japan, and another quickly snatch it up and dash off the traiin, shouting "EXCUSE ME!" to get the guys attention to turn around. he waved the phone at the dude from like 20 metres away and in plain view placed it leaning against a pillar so he could get back on the train before it left while making the guy aware of where his phone was lol. This is the kind of people we need to live around. not the taxi driver that winston and his mate had =(

I travelled through China last May on a Canadian Passport and was hassled at the Guangzhou & Chengdu airports just waiting for my connections. I was taken by police and interrogated 4 times where I was asked over and over again why I did not have a visa even though I did not need one transiting through the country. I was photographed, fingerprinted and yelled at in chinese for 20 minutes at a time. All while the two Michaels are taken hostage for the huaiwai Ms Meung who has been arrested in Vancouver.. They are behaving as if they are at war...Glad to get out of there...

Thx Serpent. What a country to be in. I just don't understand how so many people are clamoring to visit China. This is prevalent especially in the diasporic Chinese overseas thinking they are going back to their roots and to be proud of their origins.
On my second trip ever to Copenhagen, it happened to be during the 2009 UN Climate Conference in December. My wife (girlfriend at the time) lived not too far from central Copenhagen, and she actually happened to know one of the high ranking officials in the police department in Copenhagen (he might have been the chief, I don't remember). Well we went into the city, saw all the sights, and had a rather enjoyable time seeing the beautiful city. One evening, back at her apartment, we had the news on, it was CNN International, and they were covering the climate conference and they showed "violent protests" in central Copenhagen. It looked like a mess, and quite scary. But as I saw the footage, I realized it was an area we had visited that day. We saw nothing like that when we were there. We were a bit puzzled by it. This type of thing was happening every day on the news, but we never saw anything that resembled those protests, even though we were all around those areas. The day before I left, we saw my wife's police friend and his wife. So I asked him about all the protests. He said what happens is a group of 100 to 200 people will show up at an area, unannounced, and then start a ten minute "riot". The news crews will hear about this and rush their cameras right into the middle of these groups that are holding a planned riot to get their footage. As the crews are standing in the middle of the group, it makes it appear much, much, bigger than it really is. Then, after about ten minutes, they finish and disperse. Maybe a handful or so of the rioters will get arrested. But overall the protests were quite small, short, and relatively tame. But the way the news covered it, and by positioning the cameras right in the middle of the groups, they looked far bigger and more violent than they were. The news would then keep showing 10-30 second clips of these protests and made it look like Copenhagen was under siege, when the reality was the overwhelming majority of people had no idea anything was happening.
Edit - I really enjoy your videos. Many of the experiences you share are similar to what I experienced during my three years in China. One day, when I was in Haikou, there was a man lying on the sidewalk with blood coming from his head. Nobody was helping him, everyone was just standing there looking at him, including a police officer. Following my western instincts, I started to move towards him to see if I could help, but the police officer waved me off and told me to go away. So I did. But I was shocked at the dismissiveness of the Chinese people to a man who was clearly in need of help.
Good on you to try and help an injured person. I have no idea how Chinese culture is, so if anyone could explain why they let injured people die, I'd be thankful.

When I was there last year, the locals said that crime was alive and well, either batteries or entire motor bikes being stolen. With all the security cameras, face recognition and surveillance at their disposal, why is it that the Chinese authorities are unwilling or unable to tackle crime?
No one is aware of the crime so why bother hahah.

You are forbidden access to tons of outlets, sharing tons of information, strictly censored, etc. Beyond politics, it has all the problems that comes with mass poverty, lack of sanitation, clean air, poor infrastructure, extreme violations of human rights, and then some.
Chinese tourist destinations and good looking people(both inside out) are some things you should never miss if you ignore the influence of the ccp inside china. Ofcourse I'm not encouraging you to turn a blind eye to chinas issues but china can be very beautiful if you look at it in another angle

C-Milk's recent post about the thief guilds in China certainly gives a different perspective on crime in China vs. the U. S.
According to his report, theft in China is absolutely rampant - including human theft (I. E. kidnapping and human trafficking) - crimes that are virtually *unheard* of in The States.
If you go to the actual crime statistics, from state agencies or the DOJ, you find that the U. S. is one of the *safest* places to live!
Part of this also has to do with the fact that Americans tend to be more open and friendly. We generally get to know our neighbors, and then we watch out for each other.
Also, since there generally isn't an overriding political entity (in most places - with far left-leaning places like Chicago, New York City, Portland, Seattle, L. A., etc. being notable exceptions), officials aren't incentivized to cover up, and/or to at least tolerate crime.
Here in western Palm Beach County, I can safely walk my dog at any hour of the day or night. If a policeman or woman does cruise by, they generally just wave, and I'll wave back.
Safe, quiet, and peaceful is the absolute norm.
I like it this way.

Didn't Us have so many missing children that their photos were shown on milk cartons? The numbers were shocking if I recall. Could some of them have been trafficked? I've no doubt some were found but human trafficking is a massive global network and no country is free of it.

While a few of the "Milk Carton Kids" could have been trafficked, the vast majority are either parent abductions during acrimonious divorces, or run-aways. That's why they put the pictures on milk cartons - assuming that the parent who has the child is going to let them play with other kids, and if one of those other kids sees the picture, he or she will tell someone.
Outright stranger kidnapping is extraordinarily rare. If one does happen, it's usually nation wide news.
As a matter of fact, the U. S. has a nationwide "Amber Alert" system, such that, if a child is abducted, text alerts are broadcast to all cellphones in the area - an incredibly effective system and (for the most part) solution.

Oh my God, the police chief of Seattle has said that they’ve been forbidden by the mayor from using even non-lethal force against ‘protesters’ (really rioters). She sent out a letter warning people about this, ie, basically to stay away because the police couldn’t protect them. So you are absolutely right.

In one of my two week-long visits to Beijing, I saw a motorcyclist being hit in traffic( what are the odds of that? I’m 63, and only once before in my life watched a motorbiker being hit in traffic). No-one helped him lying life-less in the middle of the road. My chinese friends stopped me from trying to help. I understand them better now, thanks to your channel.

The thing that shocked me the most in China is the unwillingness to help other people because of the fear to be unfairly sued and to be in trouble ; and the kidnapping of young children then the selling of them to rural people. The unsafety in China is one the topic that strucked me the most in my entire life.

The part about them preventing you from sending that picture probably has less to do with the actual image itself, but more so the EXIF data. China was probably scanning all the EXIF data on images sent over their networks and blocking anything that came from that area. Many image processors will delete that EXIF data to reduce the file size, which is probably why you could then send it. Even just converting the file from one format to another would probably have been enough.
It makes sense to assume they check the picture itself too. Image recognition isn't a big deal today.
Checking Exif is old school.
Google, Facbook, Twitter etc.. Have AIs that scans all photos and blocks those they dislike..
UA-cam scans all Audio and Comments. (UA-cam just banned every comment I wrote about a riot attack using a SAW in Portland, any more detail and this gets deleted)
If they do all this to mess with Poltics etc. then China does the same to control their country..

Like I said before in other comments, most of us South Africans have no idea about wokeness or far left propaganda taking over the west. It's virtually non-existent, with only a few exceptions. When I'm in the US we live in a predominantly white area, no urban city, there we're allowed to conceal carry, but unless we go out on a trip there is no need to carry.

My wife is chinese and told me all the bad things/ all the things to be careful for, but I can walk at night and not be scared of being raped or attacked. All my expat friends agree when they go home to various places in America, Canada and Europe they forget that hey now there’s things you really need to be conscious of. I’ve travelled all over Asia and China. I do believe the non- tier 1 cities are sketchy- the provinces around shanghai feel the safest, but I’ve been in the middle of nowhere and met some really good people. It’s all perspective.

Chinese people know all the bad things like the rest of the world, but as a woman a white dude is the first to attack you. As a woman here I feel safe; I’ve seen somethings but I don’t think Canada or the USA is more safe. I do believe lower tier cities are sketchy here and prefer to stay closer to shanghai. I had a bad experience in Beijing and not that I felt unsafe in any other areas in China, it’s just not the same feeling. But like anywhere you meet good and bad people. If I spoke this way like the video about China my wife would be furious. I’m also married to a chinese woman. Like in turn she won’t say bad things about North America or my culture.
Two nice stories from China. I forgot my phone in a taxi. The taxi driver called the last called number and I got it back. It was late at night and the taxi driver asked for 100rmb to drive back downtown, which I gladly payed. Another time, I forgot my backpack on the subway in Shanghai, I panicked and tried to locate it to no avail. A random good samaritan called me 4 hours later, my number was on a form in my backpack, which was very lucky. He waited over an hour for me to ride back downtown and pick it up and didn’t want anything for his help. Bearing in mind, neither one of these times I had anything very valuable.
Once I lost my phone and in the next day someone found it and they gave it to the police
those poor poor children! seeing the kidnapping footage made me almost cry! my stomach turned, what a cruel practice.
