      Back in the day CAD had two descriptions. Computer Aided Drafting, a replacement for the old fashioned drawing board where the designer had done all the calcs on paper, and Computer Aided Design, using the computer to assist in achieving the required properties of the components such as strength, fluid flow, deformation etc…. How many 3D modellers use the analysis part of the software when it comes to 3D printing rather than just using it to ‘draft’ a model?🤔

    FreeCAD is absolutely able to do FEA! FreeCAD has come a long way in the past few years, once they do the 1.0 release later this year you should give it a shot.

      Exactly, I have been using FreeCAD on and off for a few years. It has gone from a piece of software that was essentially the computer scientist's idea of what engineering/CAD is (looks decent but really was not good), to a very capable and powerful package. Sure, it still has issues (drawing/drafting is my biggest gripe), but it has really rapidly improved. Ondsel, making a comprehensive commercial product that uses FreeCAD tools, has accelerated the improvements. Since all improvements Ondsel makes are forked back into FreeCAD, there is finally some more structured development.

      Absolutely agree, for most hobbyists FreeCAD has everything you need and there are so many great tutorials (MangoJelly, etc.) that allow you understand CAD from ground up.

      ​​@@artisanmakes FreeCAD has had the FEA workbench atleast from 2015 onwards, however it does not use the whole capability of Calculix that it uses for the simulation unless you manually edit the input file for it
      PrePoMax uses calculix as well but has implemented more features into the UI
      Edit: and to use more features in freecad i had to go and read the calculix guide which is a thick book, so it is a bit clunky

      I would add, look at Ondsel. They are a new cad option built on top of free cad and support free cad development, but offer additional tiers for teams and enterprise. They add a lot of user friendly additions to the core free cad software

    I'd be very interested in your backgrond and how you got here. I am a design engineer and use Fusion these days for hobby stuff, but I work in a university now as a lecturer and we have NX for work use. Machingin for me was always fun, and before my degree, I did an apprenticeship and it just grew form there :) . You channel has just been phenomenal for slo long!

    I'm an engineer/machinist and my wife is a 3d artist. This was one of the best breakdowns of the differences between direct 3d modeling and parametric cad. Wish we had a breakdown like this when we started dating! Also your on screen presentation is very good!

    For the extra credit: there are several flavours of cad depending on the industry. It's diferent for architects ( REVIT ) or machine design ( Solidworks, Catia, Inventor, Siemens NX).
    And even in one field Machine Design ... the choice comes down to either specialized use cases or historical reasons.
    I would say that Catia is present in a lot of automotive industry , Siemens NX appears a bit more in German industry ( figures why) , Solidworks got a great deal of College deals so lots of students learn it there , and Inventor is part of Autodesk suite so a lot of incentives if you came from Autocad in the 90s . More or less they work the same, though.

      For architecture you forgot archicad as the autodesk specialisations, you can almost find an autodesk equivalent to every specialisation.

    I’ve been trying to find the right programs for 3-D printing and CNC machining and I’ve really been struggling and I’ve really been leaning towards SolidWorks so this really helps me to finalize that decision and spend that money. Thank you.

      Freecad is still a little buggy and clunky, frankly it is still at around Beta2 stage so careful of swallowing the fanboys claims. Fusion360 - 'FREE' might suit you at least for a look and a comparison. I started with that, moved onto the still 'free' Startup License and for the last few years a paid license. Whatever you choose start simple find a RL widget then measure and model it for practice.

    I've been using CAD for roughly 20 years, now.
    If there's one advice I can give anyone - don't reference features or operations on other features or operations. Use the root planes for everything, including elements inside sketches, operations, features (extrude, cutout etc.). Never create sketches on body faces, because they are volatile and might disappear or get modified, at some point. Even more, since this is a parameters driven software, use them. Reference your features from fundamental planes with parameters that you can alter, thus avoiding conflicts when removing or altering other features. Never use volatile geometry for dimensioning or referencing (as you did with those cutouts for the tool holder).

    Excelent video! The reason that surface modelling (your example with the chair) is more difficult in higher end CAD systems is that they will actually produce an accurate model that can be manufactured reliably. The best tools for that cost 5 figures, i.e. CATIA, NX, Creo.

      Yeah, with blender you can just subdivide the surface and use the sculpting tools to add the texture

    “One is for arts and crafts. The other one is for real engineered parts that needs to work/function…not just look good.” might come across as offensive to some… 🙄😉
    CATIA is a CAD program.
    Then you have a vast number of different modules to add to the base package.
    But if you ask the FEM/FEA guys, they laugh at it and want their specialist software. Not a module in a CAD system. That’s my experience. 😊

    Don't forget to check your local thrift stores. You will be amazed at the hoses and connectors that show up there. I go to my 3 local stores weekly and find all kinds of devices and parts I can use on my projects.

    I think you'd really enjoy a properly modern and optimized FDM printer. Something like a Bambu A1 or even enclosed P1P to print more engineering grade materials like ABS, Nylon or some of the Fibre resinforced materials. The parts arent quite as detailed as on your SLA printer but a lot stronger and less brittle. Also they can be a lot faster and even work nicely for bigger parts depending on the settings. and they're hella reliable and so much less of a hassle than handling resin and curing it

    I’m a SolidWorks 2022 user as well. It was the last version which runs on your pc exclusively; future versions have more features that execute on online servers. Also nice, is that I no longer pay yearly or monthly sub fees. It just works.
    I also run Rhino CAD, but wish it was parametric. Haven’t tackled Grasshopper, which acts as a parametric bolt on engine.
    These two CAD systems are quite different, but I like them both. I’m getting better at moving my parts between them. Surface modeling in SolidWorks is challenging.
    My workflow is to begin in SolidWorks, then export parts to Rhino, where I add artistic features. MecSoft RhinoCAM generates the G code for CNC.

    Great video, there is another cad software that does both direct modelling and parametric and it is PTC Creo, I have been using it for 18 years, mainly using PTC direct modelling (which is not history base) to do sheet metal part for laser cutting and pressing. We also use Inventor and Solis Works.

    Since I grew up with CAE / CAM in the late 1980s and adopted solid modeling a little later (McDonnell Douglas Unigraphics -> Siemens NX) I probably have a somewhat improper approach to engineering design for much of my parts - I will often solid model them to determine fit, function, properties and interference, then use only the information from the design for 2D production shop drawings. I may not be alone. Also I’d offer that in regard to the use of CAE simulation that a great many if not most engineered parts will be considered failed from excessive deflection rather than from material yielding. Well, perhaps not fly presses . . . We miss ya in the shop incidentally! Interesting and relevant video.

    Have found limitations that you have described useful to understanding for people thinking of using such products.

    Maybe slightly besides the point of the video, and I assume you know this, but in case you (or other viewers) do not: Resin prints (UV cured) are much more brittle compared to FDM prints (filament extrusion). So printing something like a vacuum adapter that sees strains at the connections with resin is bound to break. With how thin that thing looks, I'm not confident an FDM print wouldn't also (eventually) break, but depending on filament it has a much better chance.

      I dont own an fdm printer, but this needs to be a little thicker. Prints always seem different sizes on the computer to real life

      @@artisanmakes Usually resin prints work well enough, especially as any sort of adapter (as the prime candidate for 3d printing, of course). If you've never tried FDM, I would heartily recommend it, not just for the wider material selection. The less toxic workflow, and general set-and-forget process (with no wash/cure-postprocessing) does have it's appeal. These days, even models for 200 bucks kinda "just work", and something like a A1-Mini could be considered "premium" in terms of easy of use and print quality at I think 350 or so. But it's also not a necessity, "we" (bei it makers or machinists) do generally like our toy-- I mean tools.

    I have some experience with modeling with blender because of some fun classes in college, and I have thought it might be useful for mechanical design, but for some reason it never occurred to me that cad is described with parametric shapes rather than a huge list of 3d points making it easier for relationships between sizes. You should consider doing courses for this, although if you get sponsored by something like solidworks, they provide won't let you compare it much to other programs like you did here

      The biggest difference between CAD and 3D modeling software is that CAD software makes sure your models are watertight. When sending a model to be fabricated, whether by a 3D printer or a fab, it's not enough that two lines end in exactly the same point. If they're not mathematically defined as continuous, the model is not "watertight", and the software further down the chain can't parse it. The CAD software takes this into account, and won't let you send off a non-closed shape. By contrast, in 3D modeling, any geometry that won't be seen is a waste of resources, and can be discarded to lighten the load on the computer. As long as the shape looks right and responds predictably to manipulations, it's sufficiently defined for this use case.

      @@M_Northstar that makes a lot of sense. I do remember that blender doesn't try to render what shouldn't be visible, and I remember being annoyed that something like a curve is only approximated by a series of distinct lines, even if automatically generated. Watertightness does sound like a very important property to know, even if you're 3d printing it with less than perfect tolerances.

      @@joshclark44 To clarify, "watertightness" in this context isn't the property of being watertight, but jargon for being a closed shape. If two lines end in the same point without being mathematically connected, the CAM software will see them as separate objects, and won't know how to go from one to the other.
      Sorry if I'm over explaining it, but it sounded like you were taking "watertightness" literally, and going over my earlier post, it seemed like a point of possible confusion.

    Great explanations of 3D modelling vs 3D CAD!
    I’m a Fusion 360 user myself. I’d have preferred to use SolidWorks due to the affordable hobby licensing giving you access to the full product (F360 hobbyist version is getting more and more crippled by the day). But unfortunately there is no Mac native version and in not keen to try and run workstation level software in a VM.
    PS, your doggy is still very cute. My pair of rascally Labrador’s would love to play with him (they think small doggies are great fun to play with at the park).

      I always forget that there isn’t a Mac OS version of solidworks. I think that’s why my uni was shifting over to relying on fusion, plus it was cheaper too.

      @@artisanmakes I think for universities AutoDesk pricing is very heavily discounted. I paid for F360 for a couple of years, and in that time it doubled in price from ~$300 AUD to over $600 AUD. When my wife saw my subscription in the second year, she was not impressed! 😂
      Iirc, the maker sub for SW is about $16 USD per month, I could definitely justify that if there was a native macOS port. I’ve tried FreeCAD multiple times and rage deleted it within a few hours. So many frustrating and badly thought through workflows I just couldn’t tolerate it. 😩

    Always thought it was dumb that the adaptors for the shop vac most often don't come with the tool, but they do sell adaptors for 2½ shop vac hose to 1¾.

    Mastercam CAD is not parametric and that makes it a good middle ground between the dimensional power of solidworks and the usability of 3D modeling, however it’s a bad choice for anything that requires drawings or complex assemblies of many parts because there is no way to update the referenced drawing or assembly by changing the dimensions of the individual parts.

    I would have used duct tape for that adapter. But if you want a high effort adapter, resin printing wouldn't be my first choice. Fdm is better at making thin cylinders

    How much are you spending yearly for your full-blown SolidWorks? I say "full-blown" because you have the FEA/Simulation add-on. Has Dassault Systèmes changed their pricing to make it affordable to individuals?

      It is about $4000. It is not a hobby license and I use it for work outside youtube.

      @@artisanmakes wait... you're unaware? This stuff doesn't just smell terrible. It's actually carcinogenic, hyperallergenic, and a couple more depending on what exactly you're using.
      You really don't want to mess around with this stuff. I use a special respirator for biological hazards and thick silicone gloves under single use nitril gloves when handling anything out of that machine.
      If you can smell it, there are VOCs in the air and you are at increased risk of cancer.

    i somewhat disagree on the first part. 3D modelling software like 3dsmax for example is just as precise as CAD.
    the only difference is in approach to storing model data. Max is vertex based and all CAD software is parametric (which makes all model features defined and editable).
    and there is weird beasts like Rhino which are 3D modelling software but based on parametric approach.
    but there is no distinct difference. 8:54 - this gears and splines for example can be made in 3dsMax with spline (parametric) tools and they will be as precise as Solidworks model.

      I agree. What I was more getting at is that parts do not need to be accurately modelled to specific values to get a good looking and usable model.

    Huh, I always thought CAD meant anything on the computer, so like even digital art is technically CAD. Then for 3D modeling, I referred it to organic versus measured (parametric). Now, how long until I forget the distinction 😂

      It is still not 'CAD' it is a mask on top of a 3D modelling suite. Similarly some CAD software tries and generally fails miserably to work with things like STL's. If all you want to do is create 3D Printer models for accuracy then it will work 'ok'.

    It's great to "see" you again!! I'm hoping that your recovery is coming along well. These 3d machines have certainly changed things in my main hobby, which is building scale models. It's a game changer as far as detail goes over injection molding, which has it's limitations.

    You make interesting distinctions between 3D modelling and CAD.
    Strictly speaking, ANY design process that uses assistance from a computer is Computer Aided (or Assisted) Design. Within the Architectural and Engineering professions (at least within Australia) the term CAD is usually understood to mean the use of AutoCAD, and 3D (design or modelling) is understood to refer to the use of Revit or similar software. Both of these products are, to lesser or greater extent, parametrically driven.
    Your talk about various softwares that ALL produce three dimensional results; 3D models.
    It's worth noting that most of the illustrative softwares (Blender, 3D Max, SketchUp etc.) can be driven with extreme accuracy with sufficient expertise and effort.
    However, within the context of the maker world the essential difference between what you talk about as 3D Modelling and CAD is, in my opinion, not whether the model is parametrically driven or not, but whether or not the model leaks. That is, whether the model is solid or not.
    The afore mentioned software (including Revit, which is parametrically driven) only map surfaces to give the ‘appearance’ of a solid. The models produced by these products frequently have a multiplicity of ‘open’ nodes and need extensive post-processing to achieve useful 3D printable files.
    On the other hand, manufacturing oriented products like Solidworks and Autodesk Inventor (my go to tool), are not only extremely accurate, but will always produce solid models; no open nodes, no leaks, no post-processing. It takes an extraordinary degree of incompetence to produce an Inventor or Solidworks file that will not export and slice without incident.

      I agree, although I do want to clarify that I was not trying to say that 3d models can not be accurate, it is just that they do not need to be to work. On a similar note, I didn't say that CAD has to be parametric, it is just that most tend to be or are in some part. I have not used rhino CAD, but I know people who do and i know that it isnt parametric.
      For what its worth I have not used revit either, and I think it seems to be somewhat more complicated than what my broad overview could cover. Cheers

    I think best way do describe parametric design is origami. In modeling software you just model the result object by hand. In CAD you tell the software how to fold the paper to achieve the result

    Sucks that everyone in the comments are so focused on your looks instead of the content of your videos. There are addons for Blender that will give you precise control over dimensions, etc - look for an addon called CAD Sketcher. So you can mix and blend both parametric modeling with solid modeling.

      It’s an ikea canvas that was on clearance for $5. I bought 6 of them to paint over which still comes in cheaper than buying one canvas at the art store.

    I would strongly advise against the Catia tutorials on youtube. They teach the most naughtiest things that will not be allowed in the industry 😂 Catia is hard to beat when it comes to plastic design of automotive parts and being able to handle the data without shitting itself. Shame that the basic license is 15k and you cant even do anything impressive with that, packaging studies at most and simpler solid parts.

    im a bit 50/50 on this. i have about 30 years in blender for fun, and solidworks and inventor for work. for home work i almost exclusively use blender. You _can_ precisely model in blender, it's not quite so straightforwards but if you know your way around its doable - the huge advantage with this approach is you can waaay more easily model on the fly and then make the cad drawings you need at the end (that said it is a process and takes a little while to establish the workflow). parametric modelling is _horrible_ for this. delete the wrong surface and you just wrecked the whole model, and mostly it's quicker to start from scratch than try to fix it. parametric is great if you work in a drawing office for a company that makes a thoudand things that are pretty much the same. but for one offs parametric is a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

      Why now? Because it’s difficult to talk to the camera with only shots of my hands for longer than 1-2 minutes. It makes for rubbish b roll in a video this long that’s not focused on machining.

      @@artisanmakes fair enough my friend.. just a shocking revelation.. usually people stay anonymous or are in front of the camera from the start of the channel.. overall it's not about you per se it's about the content you produce that is the channel..there's several multi million sub channels that the creator never shows their face, that all sorts of people enjoy as is..those channels would lose a piece of mystery that helps make them so great if the creator ever got exposed like TOT or AVE.. just saying you lost some charm..and may lose subs over this..

      I did this exact video maybe a year ago just with the hands, no face. Even I found it difficult to watch in the edit and scrapped it entirely. I think for a video like this where there is no machining, there needs to be useful or engaging B roll. My hand is still buggered so I found it the right time to remake it.
