The song 'Losing My Religion' by the band R.E.M. is one of the most emblematic of the early 90s, marking the alternative scene of the time. The expression 'losing my religion' is an idiomatic phrase from the southern United States that means losing one's temper or composure, and does not necessarily have to do with religion in the spiritual sense. The song, written by vocalist Michael Stipe, is an exploration of the emotions and thoughts that accompany an unrequited passion or an unbalanced relationship. The lyrics reveal an internal struggle and a feeling of vulnerability. The narrator mentions being 'in the corner' and 'in the spotlight', metaphorically establishing that he feels exposed and alone as he faces his feelings. The repetition of 'I've said too much' and 'I haven't said much' reflects the uncertainty and confusion about how to communicate effectively with the desired person, and the difficulty in understanding whether what was expressed was too much or too much. any less. The song also addresses the idea of obsession, as seen in 'Every Whisper / Of Every Wake Hour / I'm Choosing My Confessions', indicating a constant rumination on the relationship. Musically, 'Losing My Religion' is characterized by its distinctive mandolin riff, played by Peter Buck, which contributes to the song's melancholic atmosphere. R.E.M., known for its alternative style and introspective lyrics, achieved unprecedented commercial success with this track, making it one of the band's most recognized songs. The song is a testament to R.E.M.'s ability to perform. of combining catchy melodies with profound lyrics, creating a work that resonates with listeners who have ever felt lost in the search for connection and understanding in relationships.
R.E.M. is my favorite band. they do beautiful melodic rock. "Losing my Religion" is a phrase that's used in the southern US (the band is from Georgia). It means something like "I can't take it anymore". The song is really about wanting to tell someone you're interested in them, but too scared to make a move. I'm just glad you enjoyed it. Hope you'll check out some of their other songs.
The song is also about unrequited love and how you fear to tell someone how you feel, fear you will say too much or too little about your feelings and the fear of being in the spotlight of rejection, wondering if the signs you see that someone feels an attraction toward you is real, a fantasy or "just a dream".
It’s a song about having a crush on someone and dropping hints and the other person not picking up on them. Losing my religion is an old saying for when you get angry. As in “stop doing that, you will make me lose my religion”
college radio in the late 80's early 90's was awesome/ Bands like REM, Nirvana, early U2, Talking Heads and many others spread like fire across college campuses and started the alt rock revolution, it was really awesome
This music video was one of the earliest things made by Tarsem Singh, who directed THE CELL and THE FALL and the TV series "EMERALD CITY" - he's great at striking visuals.
Losing my religion is one of my favorite songs. I admire someone that learns another language. I will say lady even though you are drop dead gorgeous I am enjoying listening to your dog breath heavily. Reminds me of my dog pushing his face on the screen door and breathing over the sound of our loud dishwasher. That was a seriously loud breathing sound. Hope your dog is ok. He/She is so cute.
As a native English speaker (not sure if that makes a difference, but whatever), there are several things that have always stood out to me. If you listen closely, he never says "we"; there is always a strict distinction between "you" and "me". That's _me_ in the corner. I thought that I heard _you_ laughing. And there's always distance between them; the "you" and "me" of the song are never mentioned in the same breath in a way that would imply that the two are engaging with each other. The way the lyrics are laid out, the singer's cadence, and the tone (in the literary sense, not the musical one) also all point to a distinct division between the singer and everyone else. The second thing that's always stood out is the singer's apparent severe social anxiety. Phrases like "Oh no I've said too much--I've said it all" are absolutely dripping with the fear of rejection. The singer is afraid to share his deepest self, his inner thoughts, because he's afraid that people won't like the person he sees in himself deep down. The social anxiety also shines through in the singer's apparent indecision; "Oh no I've said too much--I haven't said enough". I've always interpreted this song as being about someone who is experiencing severe depression due to feelings of isolation and social anxiety. It's a potent mix of emotions which, if it goes on long enough, can distort the way you see the world. In the depths of my own (admittedly mild) depression, I could sometimes hear the whispers of those deranged thoughts; Why am _I_ struggling? _"Trying to keep up with you, and I don't know if I can do it"--it seems so easy for everyone else._ I've done everything right; I've been kind, generous, hardworking--people tell me these things about myself all the time, so why does it feel like the world itself was built to torture people like me? _Why do I feel so alone?_ In the midst of this suffering, the singer has lost his faith that a benevolent God could have created the world that has caused him such pain. He loses his religion.
Another take that I heard about is how the unrequited love was between a gay man and a straight man. The gay man is pining for the straight man who is ambivilous to the gay man's dream. Does the gay man tell him, or has he said too much already?
I love your dog making his sounds. So cute^^ This song for me, is about losing your hope or belief in someone. Its a song about wanting to hold on, but you can't. I feel like if you watched it again, your deep feeling might become clearer for you. You can find your meaning behind it.

I still love his dance. I have great memories of dancing around the house like that with my kids to this song (they are 34 & 29 now). Michael very rarely, if ever, let’s us know what his lyrics are about. He leaves them to our interpretation. He may be singing about the milk that spilled & how his mum will be angry & the dance is from his mum’s punishment so he’s praying to be more careful lol! (Just kidding, I know it’s deeper than that). Love this song. Also I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets emotional with some music & can’t explain why. Great reaction as always 😊
In all seriousness people always say Smells Like Teen Spirit was the song of the 90's but this one may actually have been bigger, if you were around back then I swear this was everywhere more than Teen Spirit was...
Background elements: Michaelanglo sees an angel, shows him to philosophers 'Consider this!' then finds he's just an old man in fake wings (even though we saw him fall from heaven). Then Michaelangelo draws a set of wings to make a man fly like an angel, many years later some Russian Revolutionairies make those wings in steel, dream of flying, but they do not work. What has happened to religion? The singer / dancer spends his time not following through with motions and speech, he says too much, or says not enough. He can't even get up from a chair without changing his mind. He's 'lost his religion', he has no guide and no way forward. Why?
Irina The meaning of the song is about being at the end of one's rope with someone, when being polite switches to being angry over something they have done. This song has nothing to do with religion, even though the band used several religious themes in the video

So, in the southern part of the US to lose one's religion means to lose their composure (typically reacting with anger but generally being unchristian like).
“Losing my religion “ is a southern American expression for losing your faith in something or someone. I loved this tune for decades before learned what the lyrics actually meant.

The phrase basically means losing self control usually with anger - so if you Lose Your Religion" you are sort of out of control. I assume it's based on the idea that if you are truly following Christianity then it's supposed to be the meek inheriting the earth stuff rather than letting your negative emotions overwhelm you.
It's nothing to do really with religion. The group is from Georgia (USA!) and in the south it's a way of saying you're losing your composure or decorum - as a person with faith shouldn't do that!

Perhaps the song is about a failing relationship. When two people are intoxicated with each other they become one another's religion and the foundation of reality; but when it fails faith in one another fades. Just a thought Irina.
I like the melody, the music, the vocals, although the music video and the lyrics dont make any sort of sense to me so I disregard that..I discovered that many bands in many music videos tries too hard to be profound,to have this mysterious depth and meaning but often in the end it just becomes a confusing mess to everyone, maybe even to themselves, out of it....anyway,the song was a hit,it sounds good, the melody and vocals and thats the most important part anyway, most would say.
The song is about frustration with a love interest and doesn't know how to tell them. "that's me in the spotlight" "I think I saw you try" "that was just a dream"
I think this song is really about a separation from something that one thought was tangible, but has become false. And then there's the regret afterwards, and blaming ones self: "Oh, no, I've said too much; I haven't said enough..." Then there the, "That's me in the corner," which brings up a feeling of solitary isolation; however, the next line is, "That's me in the spotlight," which is quite the opposite. I just think the song is brilliant, and it makes a person feel something. And that is what art is about
