Stipe had sent Kurt a request to work on a project together, Kurt agreed to, but had began isolating himself in a house he had that was out of town-kind of out in the sticks.He was not taking calls and not responding to anyone for the most part, except Courtney . Just before the very questionable " suicide" took place, Stipe had sent Kurt a plane ticket to get Kurt out of that house and to stay with him and work on music together. He even sent his driver to the house, who waited outside for 10 hours. After Kurt died, the note from Michael Stipe asking him to come work with him was found taped to his wall. I always liked REM, but after hearing this story, I loved them even more.

REM has a really strong catalogue. Michael's words and delivery is unique and amazing and goes straight to the heart. I had a childhood friend who was obsessed with them (they weren't that well known where I am), that's how I got to know them. They were amazing. Michael is doing really amazing solo work atm.
It's such a moving song. I remember, back in 1992, it coming on in a bar I was in in Egland, very late night, and the whole bar suddenly started singing it as one. Just one of those moments when you know a song speaks to something in all of us.

Michael Stipe wrote it about loving someone who didn't love him back and about the difficulty of trying to hint or tell the person but being so afraid of rejection and having low self-esteem. But on the other hand, "Losing my religion" means I'm going to lose my temper or go off on someone, but losing your religion for real, as in becoming an atheist is a wonderful thing. I am one. And I can tell you that being a Humanist who cares about other humans instead of bowing before a god is so much better. REM is one of the best there is. He also admired Sinead O'Connor (as do I) and wanted to dance somewhat the way she did in her video "The Emperor's New Clothes," which IS more about losing your religion, really giving it up and I LOVE that video and song. It's about standing up for yourself no matter what other people say because if you become an atheist you will face a lot of opposition from people who fear you and dread losing their own belief in fairy tales. You should watch "The Emperor's New Clothes" by Sinead. Love it. She has the voice of an angel, even though I don't believe in them! Lol We are the angels and we have to do our jobs better.

I visited my mother once and when she came back from the mall, she said that she'd heard this song she really liked playing on the speakers there. She couldn't remember any of the lyric, only that there was both a high-pitched and a low-pitched guitar playing a really nice melody and that there was a metallic sound to them, not like nylon strings. Michael Stipe is one of the best American songwriters. He doesn't get enough praise. What I find really sad about today's music is this song was considered "pop" for it's time. The 90's was an amazing decade of music.

Michael Stipe wrote it about loving someone who didn't love him back and about the difficulty of trying to hint or tell the person but being so afraid of rejection and having low self-esteem. But on the other hand, "Losing my religion" means I'm going to lose my temper or go off on someone, but losing your religion for real, as in becoming an atheist is a wonderful thing. I am one. And I can tell you that being a Humanist who cares about other humans instead of bowing before a god is so much better. REM is one of the best there is.
He also admired Sinead O'Connor (as do I) and wanted to dance somewhat the way she did in her video "The Emperor's New Clothes," which IS more about losing your religion, really giving it up and I LOVE that video and song. It's about standing up for yourself no matter what other people say because if you become an atheist you will face a lot of opposition from people who fear you and dread losing their own belief in fairy tales. You should watch "The Emperor's New Clothes" by Sinead. Love it. She has the voice of an angel, even though I don't believe in them! Lol We are the angels and we have to do our jobs better.

Oh yes!!! I love this later REM music from the 90s on, but it's their earlier work from the 80s that truly has my heart. All of those albums - "Fables of the Reconstruction," "Document," "Green," etc - literally helped me make it out of high school alive!

Stipe compared the song's theme to "Every Breath You Take" (1983) by The Police, saying, "It's just a classic obsession pop song. To me since it is a work of art it's open to interpretation, so it can have a different meaning to whoever listens.
Most of the songs today are written without any deep set meaning like this song and the others I grew up with from the 1960's. The 1980's and 1990's had so many songs written with meaning. This is a perfect song with a lot of meaning and feelings.

I saw REM, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts open for the Police during the Synchronicity tour in front of 70,000 people at Shea Stadium in NYC. What an amazing night; Sting thanked the Beatles for letting them use their stadium!

I always thought this song is about a breakup with someone, and trying to find a way to keep them in your life but not knowing how. Dreaming and imagining that they want to be with you too but you are just convincing yourself they feel like you do to try and relieve the agony you are feeling.

Losing my religion is a metaphor for losing oneself in an obsession with another person. Kind of like losing your soul and being untrue to yourself at the expense of wanting to be loved.

Great reaction. Pretty popular band in the 90s. I haven't seen the video since around the time that it came out. This song has been played on the radio a ton for the last few decades. The video gives a whole extra element to it, to see him singing and the imagery used. Cool to see you liking it.

I visited my mother once and when she came back from the mall, she said that she'd heard this song she really liked playing on the speakers there. She couldn't remember any of the lyric, only that there was both a high-pitched and a low-pitched guitar playing a really nice melody and that there was a metallic sound to them, not like nylon strings. I instantly looked up "Losing my Religion" and asked her if that was it. It was :')

Michael Stipe is one of the best American songwriters. He doesn't get enough praise. What I find really sad about today's music is this song was considered "pop" for it's time. The 90's was an amazing decade of music.
