  • I LOVED the cute as heck 3D platformer A Hat In Time, but what has impressed me most about its design is how it has transformed from a spiritual successor to a truly original IP. What did you love about A Hat In Time? Tell me in the comments below!

    I like how all the items you collect in this game have some meaning or purpose. Unlike blue coins from sunshine...
    The gems can be used to buy badges that are VERY helpful, the yarn can be used to make hats with new abilities, time pieces unlock new levels, and relics are fun collectibles used to decorate hat kid’s ship. Then there’s also different colors and costumes you can collect for hat kid.
    You don’t just collect things to raise meaningless numbers on a scoreboard

    • @snomangaming
      @snomangaming  7 років тому +133

      Woah hey there Tyler, been a fan for awhile! I couldn't agree more - even down to the relics unlocking special time rifts, and if you collect the torn up pictures in those levels, it gives you some backstory to some of the characters. Just genius, everything is intentional :)

      The blue coins in Sunshine have a purpose. You buy Shine Sprites with them.

    • @BigFearedBalloon
      @BigFearedBalloon 7 років тому +6

      +Sketchy Mane I think the point is, it's a lot of work to just get one shine when it could have just been one mission, they are scattered everywhere and in the long run collecting each shine isn't important making the blue coins unimportant. All you need to do is collect about 7 shines for each world and then you can go the end. Still I haven't played Mario Sunshine but that's what I see from that.

      +Sketchy Mane
      Which really only means anything if you are aiming for 100%, given that the final level opens based on the specific missions you completed and not a number of collectibles you have like Mario 64 or Galaxy.
      So trading them in does very little, mechanically.

    "Who do you pick doesn't matter, what matters is you had fun along the way"
    Holy shit, these guys get it. They really do. Collectibles don't exist for the sake of collecting them, but to have fun doing it, navigating tricky platforms, solving puzzles and interacting with the environment. You shouldn't grab 500 colored bananas just for the sake of doing it, struggling along the way to find that last dickish hidden bunch. They should be an objective at the end of a fun platforming romp. Or a murder mystery. Or a haunted house. Or a tough boss. Or whatever you feel is fun to play.
    Gears for Breakfast un-did Donkey Kong 64. They exorcised the curse of the collectathon that Yooka-Failee made worse, instead of fixing. And that's really rad.

    • @Terithian
      @Terithian 4 роки тому +14

      I really realized that was their intent when I realized that you aren't MEANT to collect every ball of yarn and every rift coin. There are way more yarn balls than needed, and even if you get all the rift coins, there aren't enough for all the unlocks until you do a bunch of mod levels where you get more anyway, so there's no point in stressing over finding every hidden one of those either. The point is just to have fun and collect the ones you do find, not to desperately find every hidden secret. Same with the relics: there are tons of places to find relics, more than there actually are relics, and they just give you them at each until you have them all, after which they're replaced with more rift coins. I was upset that there was no way to keep track of how many you've found out of how many of each type of collectible there are in each world until I realized that, and now I think that was a great choice on their part.

      @@t1Pz That’s a stretch honestly, but I don’t mean to disregard the OP’s comment. They were right in that Gears for Breakfast undid Donkey Kong 64, but it wasn’t because Murder on the Owl Express had no concrete ending, far from it.

    The movement is definitely a big part of this game's fun, but the way every world has a different hook is what makes it special. I'm sorry but people comparing Mighty No 9 and Yooka Laylee's development is very annoying. One was outright robbing backers and acted shady at every stage of development whereas Playtonic was open and kept to what they planned. They said the game was happening already anyway and appreciated the level of support that they received compared to the MN9 team that even went back and asked for more money on top of what they got selfishly and tried to even go beyond trying to make a game with other projects. Also the final product was literally broken and wasn't what the final product was meant to be. I don't want to take away from what this video is actually about and how Gears for Breakfast went above and beyond and have a talented new team at the helm but teaming projects like MN9 and YL together is IMO not appropriate.

    • @ShigKirby
      @ShigKirby 7 років тому +59

      I think it comes down to YL was very much your dad's platformer and in many ways its game design does stick to a lot of conventions of 90s platformers. As someone who grew up with that era I think YL did enough to stand out and was fun but it still very much was stuck in its ways to become something more than what the set out to do. A Hat in Time takes inspiration from a newer era of platformers like Sunshine and Psychonauts which had evolved from the earlier 3D platformers and GFB as a new developer have spent 4-5 years constructing this new style of platformer, injecting their own spin on the genre with a newer, fresher perspective of game design. I feel that is what makes A Hat in Time feel more current and could very well become an all time classic.

      That's not the vibe I got from Mighty No. 9 if you ask me. I think it was due to a combination of over-zealousness and biting off more than one could chew. Honestly, making a game for multiple consoles, as well as making more kickstarters on top of that before that first game is even finished is a tall order no matter what, and what resulted doesn't surprise me. Some like that say that greed was involved, but I just don't see it when I look at the situation analytically.

Like, I could go on about the mechanics or the level design (I think Mafia Town and Alpine Skyline are among the best platformer levels ever), but like Jonas said, they decided to care about it, and that's obvious all the way through. The little touches, like the Mafia pattycake, or the smooch button, or the sunglasses machine, or that little choice they give you at the very end; none of these were necessary, but they were all moments that made me love the game a little more. This is the kind of game where you can just spend hours walking around doing nothing, and still have fun. Every single character had charisma, even the spaceship equipment.

    The game's difficulty curve is dialed in just right. It starts off super simple and easy, so you get sucked into the game. But the whole time, while you're not even paying attention, things get just a little bit more challenging until you get to the windmill level and you can feel the sweat on your controller, pulse racing as you try keeping everything together.
    It does exactly what a difficulty curve should do: suck you in at the beginning, but ramp up just enough to magically nudge you into gitting gud.

    The main reason I loved this game?
    It's as Jonas said, the super open-ended moveset of Hat Kid was just marvelous. It was the sole reason why the level design could be as tight as it was, and the amount of control you get is just so satisfying.
    As a collectathon this game does a lot for me too, but it's the platforming itself, and the variety of chapters that just sells it all to me.
    I'd full-on argue that this game is the Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door of the collectathon 3D platformer genre. Super tight, super charming, and super varied. It's just a great package and the devs deserve all of the money I spent on that Deluxe edition.

Every other collectible isn’t really that important - and it should be said that practically every game imaginable has collectibles in some form. That doesn’t make them collectathons.

    Just played through this game and the thing I loved the most about it, was that it actually surprised me so often. Platformers usually use similar settings. Beginning with a grassworld, followed by desert, snow, lava etc. But this game does avoid these tropes completely, makes every mission unique and isn't even afraid to shift its tone completely. Some missions were tense and there were even parts in this game, where I was genuinely terrified, something I would have never expected. Plus I loved most of the bossfights. They were the right amount of challenging and intense and also very creative. As much as I like Super Mario, I'm not a huge fan of its 3-Hit Boss-Design.

A lot of crowd funded projects risk just banking on nostalgia and not doing anything to stand up on their own, but Hat in Time takes inspiration from a lot of classic platformers while still building its own identity. In my opinion, AHIT is much better than Mario Odyssey. Odyssey wasn’t bad, but it lacks any challenge for 99% of the game and then there’s that one painting level. AHIT has a much better difficulty curve, and hits that level of difficulty that’s just right for a casual challenge. Really, everything that Odyssey did good, AHIT did excellent.

In fact I probably died more times over the course of odyssey than AHIT, though that is probably attributed to AHIT only reducing your health from fall outs as opposed to killing you.
      I will say AHIT definitely feels more in touch with the platformer genre. Odyssey really didn’t have a huge focus on platforming and was more about exploration, whereas AHIT’s levels are designed like an open ended jungle gym which is more befitting of a platformer.

    My favorite bit about A Hat in Time is how it doesn't really mind whether you collect everything. That's a bit weird for a collectathon, sure, but look at the Pons (the gems). In Banjo or Yooka-Laylee, you would have to collect _all of them_ to get stuff. A Hat in Time not only doesn't do that, but it respawns them every time you return to the level and it doesn't even tell you how many there are. Same with the yarn. Sure, I always go out of my way to get them whenever I see them, but you don't _have_ to. You just need to get enough.
    It's a very gentle collectathon in that way. Yes, you _need_ to collect Pons and yarn to proceed, but you don't need all of them.
    At least I _hope_ there's nothing for getting all yarn, or I'd be pretty cross with the game since it doesn't tell you where you're missing them. And I'm dreading trying to find all tokens.

    the way each world has it's own unique progression mechanic and gimmick is such a big deal, breaking conventions and keeping a game from following one formula all the way through is what makes an experience memorable

      One aspect may be the quick reloading in between death - and the fact the game looks so nice and fluid and is just oozing with charm perhaps.

    I love this game so much, my only gripe is that I'm left wanting at the end. I suppose it's nice the game doesn't overstay its welcome, but still. Game of the year.

    Finished getting all Time Pieces about an hour ago. The charm is absolutely my favourite thing about the game, and you're right about the movement feeling amazing. But I also admire that the game respects the player, and challenges them despite the cutesey art and atmosphere.
    It ends too abruptly. If they ever release expansions I'll buy them in a heartbeat. Though Alpine Skyline feels like a final level, I didn't feel at all like I'd played enough of the game to reach that point yet.
    Great video, this games needs and deserves all the love it can get!

    A Hat in Time blew me out of the water. I had high expectations for the game going into it, and it soared past even those in an unimaginably huge burst of charm that I never could have seen coming. A Hat in Time absolutely deserves to be called my personal Game of the Year, and has earned its place among my favourite games of all time.

    A+ agree with everything in this video and the team's design choices.
    (Also damn the video spoiled to me where the last time piece I needed was…I ain't mad though I never would have thought of this lol)

    What I love about the game is how it manages to make YOU feel like a kid at almost every corner. The game's protagonist is a child, and it seems perfect how the adventures, cutscenes and interactions feel like something out of a kid's imagination. I was giddy when Hat kid covered herself in mud and chased after the paranoid mafia. Accidentally starring in movies and taking some of them super seriously when they're wacky as hell was also a very "kid" experience.
    The way the camera and effects move also emphasize things from a child's standpoint, and I love Hat in Time for making me feel that way

    Honestly a hat in time was the first time i enjoyed a platformer from start to end, the movement felt good (but i feel like tht is expected of a platformer, otherwise why make the game?), i never felt like i should've made a jump but didnt or was confused on where to go/what to do (except on the mansion level), i never felt like i fought the camera, and i loved being able to explore the entire chapter from the first act. The only thing I'd want from the game is the ability to redo any part of the game (mostly just the time rifts) and for it to be a little longer. But it was still great for what it was, and it was/is a complete story so it's understand why it's as short as it is.

    • @DarkMageNuggetStudio
      @DarkMageNuggetStudio 7 років тому +1

      chillmadude You can redo any part of the game by clicking its episode. And you can redo the time rifts by clicking the icon on the map. Instead of showing you a picture it will let you redo the time rift after completing it.

    my favorite thing about a hat in time are voice effects , the creator wasn't lazy and make his own music , cute things , the story , and small details
