@@MrHomelessHobos that is quite simple, she said that they ported a version that doesn't make sense on a console so I need to know whether I need to delete my pre-order.
Gabriel FSP No you shouldn’t cancel your preorder. The game is stellar, it runs on Unreal Engine 3 which isn’t regularly supported on the switch. The files that were kept in were most likely left over from the PC version of the game. It's a little jarring though, considering how little the game has to do with time in the final version. Imagine the same game but with Hat Adult at the end. It's weird.

The game IS about time travel, it’s just very subtle. On one of the Purple Time Rifts, the Mafia of Cooks explains that you are hopping through different memories of himself. Every Purple Time Rift, you are jumping through someone’s memories, that’s why you get a storybook on them afterwards. So yes, it is about time travel, only through someone else’s mind. But regardless, very hecking cool review, Arlo!

You can cycle hats with the left and right directions on the D Pad. I almost never used the wheel when I found that out. (Also up and down do emotes, with up-down-up-down doing a dance that matches time with the music!)

The Arlo logo sound at the beginning sounded exactly like a scene from the original Dragonball when Krillin says “Perfecto, thank you!” And that just really took me back... if anyone knows what I’m talking about, I will love you forever 😂
Has anyone else noticed how Hat Kid has the kind of dream bedroom that some of us would have wanted as a kid? It looks like a giant playroom like the kind you would see at Chuck E Cheeses, McDonalds, or some other kind of in-door children’s playground.
so, interesting that you mention a lack of actual time related stuff in the game. ive seen it mentioned that the devs originally planned the game to have you do actual time travel and junk.
Played the switch version and beat it today, Absolutely amazing game. Graphical and performance issues aside its an absolute Must own for a switch owner, The controls are absolutely sublime and the platforming is superb. Every input is precise and moving around is a joy. Honestly the graphics and occasional frame dip hiccups are a small price to pay for this version since you're basically getting the free dlc( Seal The Deal) and plus it's portable.
About the umbrella, you do actually get another weapon later on, it's just in the second dlc which hasn't released for the switch yet They've also already patched most of the stuttering glitches and are working to me fix all of the problems they can
To address your criticisms since you're probably not aware of DLC pack 2 (coming soon to Switch, currently only on PC). This is probably just reviewing solely the Switch version, but when DLC pack 2 is released on Switch most of your issues will be addressed: 1) Yes the physics can sometimes be janky. This is mostly an issue in DLC pack 1's Death Wishes due to requiring precision and speed. 2) Yes the camera can get stuck. As you said, it's actually quite a classic camera from the N64/PS1 days where 3D collectathons were popular. It could just be how Unreal Engine 3's camera system works so it be more of an engine issue than a game issue. 3) The Ice Hat can make you invincible for 2 hits if the button is held down, the ground pound can launch surrounding objects and enemies away, and you can use the ground pound to attack and squish things. Also, pounding switches is a classic collectathon trope and it is fun to see where you'll get flung away to. 4) You can swap the the weapon out for another...but this feature was added during DLC pack 2. There are more weapons there, and also works with weapon MODs on PC. 5) The performance issues could just be because the game was made in Unreal Engine 3...which the Switch doesn't natively support. Since its announcement, it took them a whole year to get the game on Switch, AND a patch to fix stuttering issues just released today; V1.0.3 I believe. So those will be addressed as well. 6) I think the pun is that Hat Kid is "in Time" to stop people from abusing "Time". Like near the end. No detailed spoilers... I hope these address your concerns or criticisms with the game. This is one of my favourites but Death Wish is a low point for me.
Fun fact, in the PC version you DO get more weapons in the Nyakuza Metro dlc-and the reason that there might be a lot of seemingly unnecessary things is for modding. You can say thanks to Nintendo for despising modding. Honestly I think the Pc version is superior in every way, but I won’t judge. Seeing this get onto the switch was an amazing thing!
You mentioned your favorite level. I’ve played the game and I HAVE to ask what it was! There are so many unique concepts and I need to know what your all time favorite was
I want to guess something in subcon Forrest because he says later in the game and subcon fits that description, also he never talked about snatcher the best character in the game
@@Doublee73 snatcher is the greatest character every conceived in fictional media, and I'm not just saying that because I signed a contract where if don't meet the contracrual requirements he'll take my soul
@@pilotmemes depends on how you want to play. Could be character model mods, costume mods (Persona 5 music, Joker costume for hat kid = ultimate combo), level mods are really fun adding a ton of game content, and just things like that. There's this mod that turns you into the detective bird guy and its pretty hilarious. There's a new donk city map with a ton of work put into it and they even added mario music. I missed a ton of stuff but there's a ton of merit to mods, they're not just a cheap one time thing.
You can use the right and left directional buttons to swap between hats without going into the menu. I wouldn't say it's the best thing in the world, but it works
Gonna say some heresy here but personally I liked this more then I did Odyssey. Odyssey is more well polished and had more content but a Hat in Time just had so much uniqueness, so much charm and the story was such a fun experience with great humor that it had much more of an impact on me, it's the kinda game I think Mario could learn a lot from. Each level in a hat in time had me wondering what i'd find next and while there's a lot to Odyssey, you'd never find anything as insane as Vanessa's mansion or boss battles with as much humor and personality as the bird's and mafia boss. Also the music is just a delight too, one of my most listened to soundtracks.
The "not enough stuff related to time" is definitely something i noticed but its kind of the opposite of the beta/alpha builds of the game. In those builds you were in giant time pieces as your hub area, at the end of the game you were shown a tiny bit of when hat kid was an adult, and if i remember correctly there were plans for time travel stuff, but where did you get the abilities? With the ha- badges of course. Yeah hats didn't have much to do with the game in those builds, like time doesn't have much to do with the game in the final release. I just thought that was interesting.
The gripes I have with this game: -It's too easy to get lost in some of these areas. Especially Mafia Town, too much going on and not fit for an introduction level. -The game is short. Like, shorter than Hat Kid herself. Four chapters, and it ends abruptly with Mustache Girl just appearing out of nowhere after being absent the majority of the game. -Speaking of which, there's a TON of cut content, scrapped ideas, and half-baked concepts. And there's a lot of remnants of it left in the game, making me wish for more. If they had covered their tracks, I'd be more forgiving, like an Ignorance is Bliss kind of deal. -Copy-and-paste NPCs. I get that they're not the most important characters, but I wish the Mafia Guys and Express Owls had more variants. Kind of like how Sunshine had different ages, genders, colors, clothing, etc. for the Piantas and Nokis. But it's still fun. And the midair movement is super crisp!
There is supposed to be more DLC coming soon where you get a bat as a weapon. The only thing new about it is the fact that you can put stickers on it. It is just for style.
With the weapons slot, they added that because when you receive the key in mafia town or in vannesa’s manner replaces the umbrella with the key but you can swap through them at will aswell the baseball bat weapon in nyzuki metro
You mean with Mods, on the PC, hell yeah it is, but just the vanilla game? It’s barely better then Supermario sunshine.... but damn, WITH pc mods, this game can BEAT ANYTHING Nintendo can dish out because of the fan base alone, because the fan base are Nintendo nerds themselves
Zander Metrakos how? The base game is waaay to damn short, and it feels too much like it’s in its beta stage... which it kinda is, with player mods though... holy crap, it’s like a hat in time is a totally different game
As for the game's value, it's also worth noting that the PC version has mods out the wazoo. Some people have put together entire chapters that take over an hour to complete.
I forgot to talk about the music. For whatever reason I didn't really notice it much while I was playing, which I guess is why I didn't mention it, but going through the OST on UA-cam I'm realizing that it's pretty darn stellar. My bad on that one.

Amazing game
there’s my hat in time ramble for the day
The Arlo logo sound at the beginning sounded exactly like a scene from the original Dragonball when Krillin says “Perfecto, thank you!” And that just really took me back... if anyone knows what I’m talking about, I will love you forever 😂
This the most honest review of the game I've seen
Yet he still says the game is great.
ShockHat734
Cause it is
Has anyone else noticed how Hat Kid has the kind of dream bedroom that some of us would have wanted as a kid? It looks like a giant playroom like the kind you would see at Chuck E Cheeses, McDonalds, or some other kind of in-door children’s playground.
so, interesting that you mention a lack of actual time related stuff in the game. ive seen it mentioned that the devs originally planned the game to have you do actual time travel and junk.
I absolutely love this game, and is most likely my favorite 3d platformer, i played it on pc, but i would gladly buy it again on switch
IT FINALLY CAME OUT ON SWITCH JESUS!!!!!
The ice hat can also be used to take two hits before breaking, and the second DLC has an additional weapon.
This is the third time I bought this game, totally worth it
Nice vid! You are such a great youtuber and I’m so happy you reviewed this because I didn’t know about it and now I’m looking into getting it
Y’know...New Super Lucky’s Tale drops on the 8th
Maybe you can tell us how good of an itch scratcher it is 😉
Awesome review! This one had been on my list for a bit. Also love the ending 😅. And, yes! Please make more 3D platformers
"Hat In Time will never be on Nintendo Switch"
Oh silly game dev. Indies belong on the switch.
I was trying to see if I wanted this game, but when I saw that patty-cake attack, I was sold.
Arlo ... may i just say... you have spent your money well!
Yes please more 3D platformers like A Hat in Time that game is my fav I played it on PC like 5 times
Woah nice! I can't wait to watch this interesting review
Furry begone
You do get another weapon in the Nyakuza Metro DLC, which was released at the time of this review, though maybe not on Switch.
Man I remember seeing this video when it came out...looking back that feels like years ago. I miss when things were simple.
Love it :) Thanks for reviewing this!!!! Did you know you can switch hats with the d-pad?
Update guys nyakusa metro is available for switch.
I’m still laughing how this game went from originally being rated E10+ to being rerated T
About the umbrella, you do actually get another weapon later on, it's just in the second dlc which hasn't released for the switch yet
They've also already patched most of the stuttering glitches and are working to me fix all of the problems they can
>Ice hat under used
*cough* *cough* no jump runs *cough* *cough*
Also you do get another weapon in the nyakuza dlc
It functions exactly the same, though.
more like ice hat is broken amirite. even moreso in 1.0 because in 1.0 it makes you almost completely invincible.
@@globin3477 I mean I dont know what you expected. Its like alot of menu options just cosmetic
Oh, it gets more use if you intentionally limit yourself? That's so awesome!
To address your criticisms since you're probably not aware of DLC pack 2 (coming soon to Switch, currently only on PC). This is probably just reviewing solely the Switch version, but when DLC pack 2 is released on Switch most of your issues will be addressed:
1) Yes the physics can sometimes be janky.
I preordered it months ago, and it’s coming out on Friday!
Camo King360 i think you meant to say Snacher is the best video game character period
@@Doublee73 snatcher is the greatest character every conceived in fictional media, and I'm not just saying that because I signed a contract where if don't meet the contracrual requirements he'll take my soul
The only thing I can think of when I think of this game is "WHO DARES ENTER MY HOME?" Followed by the first time you experience what comes next
Mods make PC the best way to play
What kind of mods?
@@pilotmemes depends on how you want to play. Could be character model mods, costume mods (Persona 5 music, Joker costume for hat kid = ultimate combo), level mods are really fun adding a ton of game content, and just things like that. There's this mod that turns you into the detective bird guy and its pretty hilarious. There's a new donk city map with a ton of work put into it and they even added mario music. I missed a ton of stuff but there's a ton of merit to mods, they're not just a cheap one time thing.
My dream finally came true for Arlo to do a review of A Hat in Time!
Also, Hat Kid is the cutests, and the best by default, main character in a 3D Platform.
Also the music is just a delight too, one of my most listened to soundtracks.
i have waited for this day for 2 YEARS!
Ironic that Arlo uploads while i'm on a Muppets binge XD
Whatever do you mean ?
It's pretty simple I was watching the Muppet movies when Arlo happened to upload who is a pretty much a Muppet
I just thought that was interesting.
when are you going to reveiw the ultimate 3d platformer. ratatouie. ds.
Oh yes Ratatouille for the ds truly a blessing to all gamers
Don't you mean Cory in the House?
FINALLY somebody I know is reviewing this game it's really good and I honestly think I deserves more credit and exposure then it's currently getting
Remember guys it's never coming to switch!
It’s literally just come out on the switch, that’s why he made the review.

I gotta say, this review was perfect, all my thoughts were echoed!
The gripes I have with this game:
-It's too easy to get lost in some of these areas.
I played the game on the ps4 and the graphics look a lot better on that than on the switch (at least in your footage)
That's because the PS4 has more graphical power than the Switch. Any modern game that gets ported to the Switch will inherently look worse.
Ed Wheezer This game looks much worse, though.
@@ShockHat734 Fair enough, I was just saying that was to be expected with the Switch.
Ed Wheezer k
With the weapons slot, they added that because when you receive the key in mafia town or in vannesa’s manner replaces the umbrella with the key but you can swap through them at will aswell the baseball bat weapon in nyzuki metro
Unpopular opinion but I think this game is ten billion times better than Mario odyssey
Agreed
Agreed. At least on PC with the dlc
Nah to mee just the base game alone beats all the Mario games. It just has such incredible creativity and the best pacing I've seen in a 3d platformer
Zander Metrakos how? The base game is waaay to damn short, and it feels too much like it’s in its beta stage... which it kinda is, with player mods though... holy crap, it’s like a hat in time is a totally different game
This was one of my favorite games this past year.
Your jokes have great timing. Hats of to you
As for the game's value, it's also worth noting that the PC version has mods out the wazoo. Some people have put together entire chapters that take over an hour to complete.
