I'v never seen anyone play Bayat Maqam like this on Oud this is so awesome and deep God took his eyesight but gave him spectacular sense of music thank you for sharing.

+Saad Alshehri Thanks for the interest. Mustafa is well and busy working in Beirut on restoring (digitally) old recordings by oud masters. I still teach at AUC in Cairo, but only on Mondays. Hopefully, Mustafa and I will get together someday soon, and perhaps record an update of his immense talent.
mustafa left my jaw dropped for particular minute, and many tarab especially in the last minute. i think he is making sound like a sufistic mawwal in bayati maqam, and that's very genius. thank you mustafa.
italy9000000 Yeah that's because your culture is dirty just like your women ;) enjoy some of the arab elegance you don't have that in your "brothel" culture.
+TheSapawpaw Agreed! When Mustafa returns to Cairo from Beirut for more than a few days, I hope to get him to do some more of this. Thanks for the comment.
Masha Allah, that was simply spectacular, it was a real joy to listen to it, this man is a treasure, I pray he keeps his art intact and not yield to popular demands to water down his music to please the crowds.
phenomenal, enigmatic, captivating, magical, entrancing, and a whole lot more... I found myself drifting and swaying several times during this improv.... thanks bill
beautiful sound beautiful feeling and beautiful music. did you study oud or by ear ether way sound like water falling, like bird flying, and like Mustafa said playing. also do me and do all the people who like this give us more of your work and add some of rast, sega, and saba with the way you play it will be amazing sound.
What an outstanding musician It’s a shame after seeing some later clips of his playing it seems limelight and recognition and presence in tv studios has compromised his art and he no longer performs Arabic maqams is such pristine and uncompromising manner
Starting around 6:05, how is he playing artificial harmonics?? Don't you need one finger on your right hand to touch the string and another other to pluck it?
It’s still a bit of a mystery to me as well. But I remember how, during those “early” years now about 25 or more years ago he often mentioned he was working on a harmonics technique others were not using. We may need to ask him to explain it himself.
@@TheFolksinger Well, I've sort of got this to work on my oud in the same way that guitarists do it, with my thumb lightly touching the string and index plucking, but I can't see how he's doing it with the plectrum in his hand.
tehmightymo it seems to me a technique that electric guitarists use, I remember trying to do it on guitar. They pinch the string with thumb and plectrum. It’s called pinch harmonics.
Oh gosh, i can't get enough of this really amazing taqassim. Mustafa is surely amazing. I have a question guys: do you happen to know who made Mustafa's Oud? It is the kind of sound i've been looking for for a long time. Thanks guys :)
+thebest41or2 At this moment I do not, although I'm pretty sure it was a master craftsman in Cairo. Mustafa is in Beirut at the moment, I think. But I will try to find out, and if I do so, I will post an answer here.
+thebest41or2 Mustafa replied to my email: "The person who makes my Ouds since 2006 name is Albert Mansour. He lives in Beirut. I never am fed up from having instruments made by him. He even made the Oud family playing in Asil Ensemble."
In fact i heard quite a lot of praise for this maker, but i never heard his ouds (apart from Mustafa's of course). Can you tell me about the price range for ouds made by Albert please? Thanks so much for your help :)
+thebest41or2 I don't know the prices. But I'm sure you could google the person and contact him. I do know that when I purchased an oud that Mustafa had made for me (though I don't know if it was Mansour who made it) I paid in Egyptian pounds about the equivalent of 500 or 600 USD.
The oud? or the improvisation itself? AMERMILKYWAY SAYS BAYAT MAQAM. Unless Mustafa disagrees, I'll go with that. Check out his fine concert from Dec. 12 2012: ua-cam.com/video/sQK8Hh6CyyY/v-deo.html
The oud is nice. I would call makam bayati with maybe a few clever modulations. Style is pretty much strictly Arabic and the intonation used is Arabic. You can hear that the player is probably capable of the carpma style used in turkish style playing. Funnily enough the intonation never used to be such a nationalistic subject.
Yes the bowl form is different its called "Kaa'b Maqloub - كعب مقلوب " it have this nice tilt toward the bridge which is more comfortable for the right hand to play.
I am not sure I know who made this one. Mustafa could tell us, but he is away in Beirut now, working on special recording projects. You could probably search him on line and find him.

For a sound like Mustafa's oud it must be produced by a mastermaker.
I will be more than grateful if you could find out.
Thanks,
Mike

Well, in maqam bayat "dominant" or "r'amaz" is 4th note. The Arabic music theory is different than western. :-)

Thank you very much for the information. However, i was asking about the type of oud. :) It looks different from most I've seen.
