Quante belle cose italiane !

Malipiero offers us a very dark piece here. His personal neoclassical technique allows him to translate efficiently into sounds the dark visions that inspire the work, which is quite impressive.

The second movement certainly sounds a bit like Mahler...which is perfectly fine with me. Malipiero is new to me, which is wonderful! After 40 years of listening to classical music, it's nice to know there are some pleasant surprises left. I'm going to certainly explore his other works. Thank you, ThewellesczCompany.

His friend Casella made him know Schoenberg in that period, but it also abandoned soon those influences. Malipiero has a very particular and unmistakable musical lexicon. For a strange case, his great estimators were all German ones and his music was very performed in Germany in the years 1920-1934!

I don't know that work of Novak, but I think that Malipiero didn't know this author. Malipiero since the first his work has wanted to estrange the more possible from the German (or of German area) music, because it had a bad opinion of it. The first compositions for orchestra hear again particularly some influences of the French music.
The only moment of its life in which the German music had a strong influence was around 1918-1919, when it came to knowledge of the expressionism.

I think much of Malipiero's pre-1950 music is quite beautiful. I also think that the difficulty Almeida has in these performances is that he does not seem to handle the more dissonant passages as expertly as the softer ones. The playing of the former strikes me as more rough, less well-rehearsed. By the way, is it just my imagination, or do certain passages in the first movement of this work sound a bit like Vitezslav Novak, for example, the Slovak Suite?
