As a simple listener I would tend to agree with you, Mr Maag's skills make these pieces shine (but as I greatly admire Maag and love listening to Malipiero, I might be biased). I would be very very curious to hear what was the impression the pieces left on you upon your first reading.
The title is rather technical, and at the same time hints at J.S.Bach, but there is no "return to" in these pages. They are rather capricious, written in a neoclassic language. They are very pleasnt to hear, and exhibit no academic or doctrinal character. They are free, inventive as the title suggests.
