    I can’t wait to see the Alt-Right and the Black Nationalists fight this one out in the comments. For the assholes on the Alt-Right who say black people can’t have empires, I reply “go fuck yourself”. The only things you need for empires are a large military and plenty of testosterone filled males. By the way, the discord is dead and will never live again.

    Gotta disagree with the part on Portugal. Reason being? Prester John. Ethiopia was mythologized as being a legendary Christian kingdom out within the Musilim sphere in our timeline. And when the Portuguese found them, they believed Ethiopia were those mythologized people. Now, if instead they found an Ethiopia which was a thriving Christian kingdom which could go toe to toe with the Ottomans, they'd be very keen to ally and have the friendly ports en route to India.
    Whether that relationship blossoms or becomes a rivalry, there would be extensive contact which would probably advance their tech to be at least on par with the Ottomans circa the 1800s.

If so then they could have very likely won. I mean if they could hold off 200,000 professional soldiers with farming tools and being starved imagine if they had food and semi decent weapons.
      From here the Japanese government might figure the fight isn't worth it and decideds to have Kyushu be a puppet state, absolutely loyal but able to govern themselves (like legalizing Christianity) the rebels would probably take that deal.

      Byzantines had their own interests, as did Armenias, and the principality of Antioch. Didn't stop them from working together.
      Hell, the crusaders tried to form an alliance with mongols till it blew up in their face. So it's likely Ethiopia and the kingdom of Jerusalem would form a casual alliance knowing that they'd be weakening a common enemy in different areas. This especially could have happened during the rule of Baldwin the 4th since reynald was doing raids in the red sea. In fact the kingdom was going through a succession crisis trying to marry sibylla or her half sister to someone competent. Considering that kings of Jerusalem regularly married foreigners from byzantine empire and Armenia. It wouldn't be suprising if a competent Ethiopian Nobel or general was a candidate to form an alliance.

    honestly
    1: Ethiopia would probably adapted/industrialized to the bureaucratic warfare/technelogical disparity just based on how most christian countries ended up doing so...socially or religiously speaking, unlike many other religious/cultural groups which had become or already were wary and conservative, Ethiopia would have no reason be, seeing as it neither went to the slowly-fundamentalist islam (the only axial age religion near it (that wasn't christian), nor was it invaded by ze Mongols. it would also be more likely to industrialize due to a quite large merchant base/class, which tended to help things
    also, i could easily see the Portuguese mistaking ethiopia for the mythical Kingdom of Prester John (especially for how much Ethiopia would be prospering at the time), and decide that it may not be a good idea to attack, atleast immedietly (especially since, iirc they wanted to ally the kingdom of Prestor John to fight the Ottoblob)

Their best chance historically would've been getting tech from Portugal (basically like Japan early on, until they got tech from other countries as well), and industrializing from there. Not sure if they have good access to farmland for industrial agriculture and iron for ships and weapons though. 10:17 Hold on a second, in our timeline Ethiopia and the Portuguese worked together as allies. Sure, you could argue that this was to fight against the Ottomans but that glosses over the fact that the Portuguese saw the Ethiopians as the legendary kingdom of Prestor John, and if the Ethiopians are giving out fair trade deals I don't think we can simply assume the Portuguese will just automatically go to war with them.

  • @opakular
    @opakular 4 роки тому +13

    Not sure about the Portuguese having an indomitable military advantage over Ethiopia. In our timeline, the Ottomans were no naval slouches. They managed to keep the Portuguese out of the Red Sea and did score military successes against the Portuguese in a few naval battles. The Ethiopians might have developed a powerful navy, combining their own techniques with the technological cross fertilization occurring in the world at that time. When the Portuguese tried to impose Catholicism on Orthodox Ethiopia, the Ethiopians rejected it and kicked out Portuguese who took up residence in the country. European bureaucratic warfare did not avail itself much against nations that were just as ruthless in warfare, like the Ethiopians, and that were determined to follow their own agendas and interests. That's why Europe, prior tot he 19th century, could not effectively impose its will on the rest of the world.

How did a population of less than one million (Somalis) have the largest landmass and coastline for a single ethnic group on the continent during the Scramble for Africa and defend it longer than any other in Africa (Dervish wars) despite few mountains to hide behind? And on top of that for centuries posed an existential threat to a much larger neighbour with mountains galore. I think if Somalia wasn't in its current state, a lot more people would take interest in its culture, and history like before the war when it was a tourist hub. No, Ethiopians didn’t have immunity. Why do you think they expanded into Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Eritrea, in ancient times but never into tropical Africa? They wouldn’t even have faced resistance but the diseases were a death sentence and no outsider could live there.

    • @aetu35
      @aetu35 4 роки тому +4

      Well, I got a little list here:
      *Visigoths -* They were a corrupt and weak kingdom around that time, so weak that an Arabic raiding party made them collapse. they would either go through a dynastic change (peaceful or otherwise) or some Frankish venturer would claim the throne (happens more than you'd expect).
      *Ostrogoths -* Justinian and the Lombards sealed its doom in the end, and it was mostly controlling Italy because Odoacer's Kingdom of Italy was universally hated by everyone. I doubt it would stay Gothic, maybe a mix of Gothic and Italian culture would appear which would dominate the ruling class and lands around Ravenna (where the kingdom was founded) similar to how Lombard culture came to Italy.
      *Ukrainian Goths -* They would just be a minority like the Tatars.
      *Crimean Goths -* They were the least impactful in history but survived the most. They probably could conquer all of Crimea and unite it under a mixed Tatar-Germanic-Pontic Greek culture. Expect a duchy that would be a pain in any local empire's ass by continuing to ally others for that sweet balance of power.

    I find that hard to be alive that could happen, modern Ethiopia can’t hold together Oromos Tigrayans Agra’s Somalis and Amharic peoples I don’t think an empire would be able to do it especially with holding Yemen and Oman to. The pride cultures of Arabs Swhillis and Somalis would easily be able to repel within a few decades and this would bring these people’s together in response we would get a east Africa with dominant Somali Swahili and abasynian.

    The Ethiopians could have a MUCH better chance at succeeding than Syria for numerous reasons like not being constantly invaded by foreign powers who just leave and wait for the next revolt, they would have had a long time to develop and probably somewhat friendly relations to European powers since the horn of Africa is a good stop off point. Also, probably being able to beat Italy with better relations, power and stability.
    There are probably many more reasons which make it probable that they at least get some slightly succesful industry like Italy, Spain and Portugal.

I would assume yes, but if you had asked anyone in 1946 if the solomonic dynasty would still be in power today most would probably say yes. how could a government that successfully survived European colonialism, had successfully reestablish itself after exile, and generally loved by it's people fall away? But I guess that's what makes it so difficult to know "what if" or predict the future. you can never account for every detail.
