@@geek593 Yup, I played Tear on MD and have faced Legacy Dredge when I helped my friend practice for a GP before even Faithless Looting came out.
What Tear does that Dredge doesn't is allow for a control style game by using the main fusions and Sulliek (and Cryme if you run that) as in archetype disruption pieces because nothing it can do would allow it to still get into the red zone if it goes first. The eternal format Dredge lists can put out enough bodies to be lethal turn 1 AND give them haste.

I definitely feel given how archetype centric Yugioh is, this is a better way to evaluate cards and to give better context. There are only so many generics you can show that are ambiguous enough.
Although I do wonder how mean you could get, seeing as we have plenty of cards in archetypes we completely forget are in one because they are the only good card.

Wow, this is a really interesting way to introduce how yugioh works to Mtg players! With how archetype centric modern Yugioh is, this format provides context for the Mtg players so that they can better evaluate cards.
That reminds me that non-archetype specific cards nowadays are either format warping superthreats (like Triple Tac, Handtraps, Kurikara, etc.) or pack filler garbage that sees no play today but would have been busted in older yugioh formats. Might be a good idea to explore the pack filler side if you continue doing single cards alongside archetype analysis.

Seeing the interactions gives a lot more context for the guessers, allows them to see the cool interactions the cards are built for (even if they aren't always effective), and could help avoid situations where the guesser might argue the ranking of a specific card where it's not the current meta or otherwise a particularly strong or weak individual card in a contrarily weak or strong deck. great video. I really liked the guest in this episode, and would love to see him in more videos. I think he is the guest that understood the cards alone the most without you kind of "translating" or explaining it to them and wasn't completely confused when looking at the cards. from the rest this series I was used to all the guests being confused and shocked from the cards that it was kind of a shock to see him just understanding them at first look. it was the first time I saw an mtg player read relatively complicated yugioh cards and not act like they are written in a completely different language

  • @MycoSC

This is definately an improvement over single card in showing the mtg pros more context for what a card is supposed to do, it also allows them to compare between three decks instead of trying to determine if a single card is good without context of the game overall🎉

ABC had two notable periods. Around its release and when the Link Era started.
During its release it was a budget option that had many qualities that made it a functional deck but not overpowered. It was apart of probably one of the fairest formats in Yugioh’s history.
The 2nd was because ABC essentially got a buff from Links which were able to be summon for at a price even better than free.

Weirdly enough the copyright date doesn’t reflect actual printing date on most Yugioh cards. 96 was the year Yugioh was released as an IP, 99 was when Japan released the first set of cards, and 2002 was when it got brought to the US

Well, it's been said multiple times in the comments before me, so I'm just reiterating here, but I really enjoyed this spin on the concept of showing non YGO players Yugioh cards.
As someone who got his TCG start over in Pokemon, moved to Magic, and picked up Yugioh only with Master Duel, Yugioh has become my favorite of the big 3 precisely because of the goofy combo lines that are possible in the game, and showing part of an archetype is the best way to do that.
Part of the problem some of these "Player from X game rates cards from Y game!!!" videos run into is that a lot of them turn into "show someone a weird card and then make funny noises when he gets it wrong!!!" when its a lot more interesting to explain mechanics of the game and allow the "contestant" to puzzle it out, instead of just waiting for them to inevitably get it wrong due to the radical differences between the two games (and the resulting mindsets of the players) in question. Of the multiple channels I've seen on youtube that cover this video concept, I like yours the most, James. You avoid the issues that the concept often runs into, instead allowing the "contestant" to think through the card.
That's why I like this spin-off idea (focusing on archetypes instead of individual cards) as much as I do, because it turns it into more of a puzzle instead of Yugioh players all circling around the Magic player while pointing and laughing at him for not being able to figure out why Amano-Iwato (for instance) is good.
As far as an archetype suggestion, I like the idea of looking at some of those archetypes that have been mediocre before one or two cards saved them, or legacy archetypes that got mountains of support. Mathmech Diameter/Circular-type things for the first one, and maybe something like Eternal Soul for Dark Magician decks as the second category.

As the other commenters have said, I think you've struck gold with this format. Everytime I watch an MTG player guesses Yugioh they only ever leave the experience feeling more confused than anything else because it's just difficult to evaluate something with 0 context to how the meta actually is and see how the synergies work because of how text heavy Yugioh is. It's easier to evaluate single MTG cards from a YGO guesses MTG perspective because MTG is a lot less Archetype centric, more generally fluid/splashable, and have simpler effects overall, compared to the stupidly specific archetype-made infinite combo loops YGO cards have, so watching those videos have always felt kinda clunky to me. But this? This works really well! I think you've finally figured out the perfect format, this is tier 0 to me (bad joke sorry).

Archetypes was amazing since they have to really evaluate the cards or how cards that are too hard to summon (empen) look when you see their support.
Also what's funny is ABC is arguably a coinflip against than right now because since Ancient Fairy Dragon/Therion/Vaalmonica existing give them a crazy ability through play through handtraps not named droll/Shifter. And neither deck likes playing into the board of the other.
ABC can end on a few negates and a pop or reliably summon ABC equipped with all 3 names and you don't really side in Spell/Trap removal vs the Monster Combo deck and Floo has floodgates that are devastating for a deck that's reliant on Link summoning/the GY.

Purrely: you are basically playing tamagotchi but yugioh

Phantom knights: plays with the graveyard alot.

  • @Onibushou

Plunder Patrol could be an interesting archetype to ask about. I've been playing them in the current Master Duel event, and in lower powered settings they can really spiral out of control. So much attack boosting and banishing the opponent's stuff that it feels almost dirty. Lack of a wind ship (one day...) and one of the most played cards in the game (Ash) crippling them is so rough though. It definitely reads like something that could be good, but never really has been anywhere near meta. If only....
Also need a throwback to something like Summoned Skull beatdown or Jinzo as a really old 'used to be good' deck. Could always be mean and give them something like Azathot, then explain that it isn't good any more because those cards are banned. 🙃

There is a funny archetype called Vaylantz
Its gimmick is a board-chess game inside yugioh, which means you move your monster from zone to zone to activate their effect, low level vaylantz are the pawn you use in order to make your high level vaylantz summonable like you have to move your pawn in chess to move your Queen, the deck is kinda relevant and fairly competitive in the ocg format and master duel so you have to prepare for it.

The biggest issue with MM is not that once you remove the monsters you can't use the spells/traps from hand (as Jame tried to explain). You would just set the spells/traps in that case.
The issue is that if they remove the monsters your spells cannot be activated at all.
EDIT: This means you can't lean heavy on the control portion (running a lot of the spells/traps) because if you dont draw a single monster your whole hand is now dead; but also you don't really want to draw a lot of monsters because MM are really ... like really bad at swarming the field.

This is really cool. I'd love to see a Trap deck on here and see how an MTG player is able to gauge a Trap's power in the vacuum of a Trap's slower speed. Something like Labrynth or Traptrix.

What a fun guest, all around he was a pleasure to watch and I loved how much fun he had unwrapping the workings of how these cards interact. I've never watched his vids before, but he seems like he's got a good grasp on game design, I'll have to check him out. I think this was an amazing idea for an episode. It was a lot of fun to see the little clicks in his head as each were revealed. Ya know, Konami should consider videos like these breaking down every archetype in the game, it’d be a great help for new and veteran players.
When it was time to pick a bad archetype I had to wonder what could be dysfunctional enough to be a legit choice. Then I saw Magical Musket and thought “Yup, that’s a perfect choice” Hopefully one day these gunslingers get a proper means of protection and push, because they have such a great gimmick and theming.
Ya know, you should consider doing commentary for MTG and/or Yu-Gi-Oh feature matches. You have a great talent for breaking things down for people, and a vast knowledge of game history for both games. Plus you have a great voice for announcing things and introducing people. On that topic, if you’re looking for Yu-Gi-Oh guests, Lampi_Ygo he’s a German commentator who does the European events. He’s done collabs with a lot of smaller UA-camrs, and he’s been quite responsive on all his social media, so he might be a good choice. YourYugiohChannel, one of the original YugiTubers from over 10 years ago has come back and he’s looking to grow his channel again, so maybe he’d come on.
Side note, I hope ya don’t feel like you need to be pigeon holed into only doing this kinda content. I’ve also been checking out some of your MTG deck videos (though I’m still a total newb). I’d get more into the game, but I can barely afford to even keep playing Yu-Gi-Oh anymore (If I start dropping off from the comment section, that’s probably why).

Ngl, when you rolled up with ABC and was hyping up the final card I was slightly hoping you pulled out A-to-Z Dragon Buster Cannon but Union Hanger works too I suppose. Also here's a dumb idea but why not for the next one of these have someone rate the Ojamas, Armed Dragon, and VWXYZ only for the ultimate punchline being Armed Dragon Catapult Cannon just to see their reaction as to how this card came to be from these 3 archetypes that seemingly have nothing relating towards each other.

I look forward to seeing someone evaluate dragon rulers.

  • @YukiFubuki.
    @YukiFubuki. 10 місяців тому +1

for the next iteration of this it i think it'd be a good idea to give an overview of the card to get an idea of how it would be used and iron out any possible confusion or uncertainty and then another overview of all 5 as a whole so he can have an easier time evaluating them like what you did at the end with floo telling him how its robina -> eglen -> empen -> floo spell/trap + recycle robina and eglen, would definitely make it harder and get them thinking more
i think an easier explanation of 'appropriate' in union hanger's text is that its there so players cant attempt to equip just any LIGHT machine monsters like photon orbital for example with the effect of equipping itself to photon/galaxy monster and then has an effect to search out another photon/galaxy monster by sending itself to the grave while equipped to something so the restriction of not being able to summon it while equipped is pointless for it, there isnt much non-union LIGHT machine monsters that cant be equipped by this effect but its essentially a way to future proof it to pre-emptively prevent abuse
wouldve been interesting to see his reaction of what the magical musketeers is based off of since its designed off of a german opera; der freischütz (the freeshooter/marksman) about a man named max who makes a deal with the devil samiel for 7 magic bullets that always hits what he wants without fail but the 7th bullet is under the devil's influence
there is only 7 'magical musket' spells and traps within the archetype each representing 1 of the seven bullets and while there is 8 monsters only 7 of them hold the 'magical musketeer' title in their name and are all lvl 3-4 cept for magical musketeer max who is a link-1 with the 8th monster not being a 'magical musketeer' but the only non-musketeer monster as 'magical musket mastermind' is based off of the devil samiel himself and is lvl 8 showing how he doesnt fit into any of the pattern of the other cards and is above the influences of the thematic 7 which is ironically very fitting

Was kinda hoping one of the archetypes shown would have been Branded or Bystials, as Fallen of Albaz is pretty much my favorite monster (I even consider him my "Ace" monster at this point), and I love running him and his support in a hybrid deck with Blue-Eyes and with one or two DNA Surgery cards thrown in to turn the opponent's monsters into Dragons if they aren't already dragons. Managed to wipe the floor with a Blackwing player with that deck in Master Duel too, and that was before I'd even "completed" the deck and was still missing certain cards.

Looking at archetypes is more fun than single cards and is a lot better than just saying “this card is good”"
also as a side note when mental saw his first union monster and said "it seems clunky", like he immediately recognized why the inherent problems with union monsters, especially after seeing the buttery smooth floo gameplan, robina get eglen, eglen get empen, summon empen

This was super cool! I am glad this stepped away from the YGO/Magic show and tell classic of just show off a few staples and be done with it, as that does get samey after a while. If you do this again, I would perhaps recommend Scareclaw, as that's a pretty simple archtype at it's core, but lets you show off Lore!Archtype stuff as well with Visas Starfrost. Vernesylph might make for a good "trick question archtype". and Eldlich would make for a nice "was once good" example.

I do feel like he needed two pieces of context on Map though, (1) that the first effect constitutes a second normal summon at sorcery speed, rather than as a trigger, and (more importantly), (2) that hard once per turns are *super* common in the game.
