Hey Ralph, you have a good point. The Portuguese canned fish always seems to be at the top of the good ones. Thanks for watching commenting. Much appreciated
It's worth noting that King Oscar and Chicken Of The Sea are owned by the same company - Thai Union Group. So they are likely the exact same species of Sardines caught in same place, then filtered and sorted in terms of quality before being stamped as either brands. I personally prefer the bigger species from Morocco or Portugal. Once you get over the $2.50 price point, their texture is firmer and smell is fresher than Bristling ones. What you described as a "strong" fishy smell is generally an indicator of a seafood product that took longer time from catching to packacging, usually present in lower quality brands.
I live in Thailand, I get tinned sardines from Malaysia, Vietnam, and Japan. The Japanese has 3 different sauces as well. All of them are 100% better than anything I have had in the US.
@@RobbsHomemadeLife Ayam brand sardines in olive oil, Malaysia. Sea Crown sardines in vegetable oil, Vietnam/Thailand (my preferred brand), and from Japan, Grilled Sardines in Kabayaki Sauce, Sardines in miso sauce, Sardines in soy sauce.

I usually keep a half dozen cans in the pantry most of the time . I am also a fan of anchovies . With that said , can you do a spread on them , featuring the different brands and quality of each?As with the sardines I favor King Oscar , but their anchovies are a little more difficult to get . Any ideas will help. Thanks in advance .
I recently got the courage to try sardines. I tried the King Oscar Jalapeno. Tolerable, but pricy. Just now tried the COTS in EVOO. I added a dash of lemon juice and some hot sauce. About the same, but not quite as small and solid as the KO. And at less than 1/2 the price (1.19 vs 2.98), I'll stick with them
I bought the Chicken-of-the-sea sardines and found them to mashed up and a mess. I like the ones that are whole and can be fried. Thanks for the video.😊

The Wild Planet sardines are good for frying. Every now and then, I lightly flour (with spices) and shallow fry them with some rice on the side. It'll stink up your house though 😆
Hey thanks for watching the video and taking the time to leave a nice comment much appreciated I did not like the wild planet sardines but the reviews for those sardines are very favorable.
@@RobbsHomemadeLife Understandable. They're definitely not the sardines I go to grab when I want an easy snack. King Oscar all the way. Keep up the good work 👍
Hey Rob, have you tried the Mega Brand sardines from the Philippines? They come in a cylindrical can and are packed in a tomato chili sauce which is kind of weird, but they are very tasty.
No I haven't tried that brand. I have tried sardines in the little round cans with tomato sauce, etc. The tomato sauce reduces the fishy taste and aroma a lot. I have had it over rice with a lot of peppers. The used to be very inexpensive.
Hi Robb! Very interesting food fight. I’m not a fan of sardines, it’s too fishy for me. I love good tuna though and eat it a couple times a month. But a study said because of the mercury found in tuna that it wasn’t good to eat often and that’s why I cut back on my consumption. Thanks for sharing, this was fun. Have a blessed night!
Hello Willows, thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it. I'm not going to encourage anybody eat something they don't like, but if you like tuna, which is a large fish and may have health issues from eating it. You might want to look into the skinless boneless sardines I mentioned. They actually didn't taste like sardines or smell like them either. It was a lot like tuna. I think it is a pilchard. It's a very small fish and does not have the same toxin profile tuna does.
Not a fan of Chicken of the Sea. I have been experimenting and ordering them online due to the terrible selections at my local stores. So far my favorites have been Matiz and Santo Marano. I never get skinless and boneless, and never in water.
I've been pretty much exclusive to King Oscar with skin + bones in either olive or soybean oil for the last few years. Thought it might be fun to branch out after sardine videos started weirdly popping up in my YT feed and picked up two new brands: the Wild Planet you have above, and Mantiz in Spanish olive oil. The Wild Planet was bad, visually unappealing, smells nasty and not pleasant at all. I tossed it after a couple bites and I'm pretty sure if my cats were still around they would have given it the snub. The Mantiz however was great, but also pricey at $4.99.
Hey you must have gotten the same batch of wild planet that I did that's so strange a lot of people seem to like that brand I wonder what their problem is king Oscar is the best so far for me thanks a lot for watching the video and taking the time to leave a nice comment much appreciated
Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I'm not a regular consumer of salsa but I looked online at the store and there are a lot of different salsa being sold so that's a very good suggestion.
My last few cans of King Oscar (oive oil with skin and bone in) were so oily ... They smelled like Cod Liver oil ,... way to strong and oily I often eat. Season thought Love to find a skin on but boned Sardine )
King Oscar cost a little more but are by far superior sardines. I never noticed until watching your videos but the olive oil from King Oscars is more thick like regular olive oil vs the running watered down look of the Chicken of the Sea.
The Wild Planet (with lemon) is my favorite. No ammonia smell. Definitely a more robust, fish smell which is like real fresh sardines. Wonderful oily texture. Great for the price. Addictive. Not amazing like a Nuri, but for half the price, I find them a great buy from a solid company. Chicken OTS is garbage.
Thanks frank I appreciate you watching the video and leaving a nice comment. I know a lot of people left positive reviews on my wild planet sardine selection but I have to tell you I must have gotten the bad bats 'cause mine were awful and I opened more than one can. And when I mean awful I'm not exaggerating.
Hey thanks so much for watching and leaving a nice comment I appreciate that wild planet did not work out for me but they are very popular maybe I just got a bad can
Wild Planet wild caught Sardines are my favorite regardless of anyone else's opinion. I'm not impressed with highly reviewed King Oscar Sardines. I would rather choose the Aldi's norther catch sardines in water.
A lot of people like wild planet sardines. Mine were dreadful. I did some research and there were more than a few people that felt the same way as I did. It looks as if there were some bad batches that came out of the cannery in Thailand. I will have to check out the sardine you mentioned.
Hello Smith, it's always good to hear from you. Are you getting ready for the fishing season? We used to have pilchards in a can. Some years ago, but I don't see them anymore. Over here.
Chicken of Sea is a winner Would make a great sandwich or just if you’re hungry and need something to eat or “tuna” salad And for a third of the price I don’t see the need to buy King Oscar
@@RobbsHomemadeLife I’m trying to save money right now on food, but I definitely prefer King Oscar King Oscar is like 3x better and that’s why it’s 3x the price, but by no means is CotS a low quality product CotS is a high quality product, maybe not their flavors, but the integrity is there
I want to be a lucky alley cat near your apartment dumbster in the next couple days, licking plates. They all taste so good. I like the ones in tomato sauce..
I agree. Sardines, herring, pilchard, can mackerel clams are all good choices for less heavy metals. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
I think they must have been a bad batch. If you read the reviews on Amazon many people love them. Mine tasted of ammonia. And the texture was wooden. They were some of the worst sardines I ever had.
Chicken of the Sea are to mushy for me. I like a little firmness to my deens,, but great comparison. I look forward to the Salisbury steak TV dinner one that's one of my favorites. PS. a price comparison would help out a bunch as well, some of us can't afford the pricier stuff.

I've been trying to work up the courage to try sardines. Think I'll try your dip/spread from a while back. Glad I got King Oscar as they look the best to me.
Hello Susan, I didn't know anybody remembered my old sardine sandwich bread video. That was a very good video. I am going to be making more food fight videos. People seem to like the sardine video so I can only imagine how they will respond to a fried chicken or strawberry ice cream food fight😀 thanks again for watching and leaving a nice comment.
See now, I wanna work for your channel all summer, eating and reviewing canned fish so that I can eventually hibernate, until next spring!
(I'm for direct deposit 😊😅😂)
The oil in the first king also looks like actual olive oil
Hey Patrick thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.
What are we even doing here?
🤣😂🤣
Well it seemed like a good idea at the time
I vote King Oscar.
Hey Minnie, I agree. I think they were the best.
Chicken of the sea good and budget friendly mustard good and mild also love hot also
James that sounds pretty good thanks for watching the video and leaving a helpful comment much appreciated
I agree, COTS mustard is very good, but for the price of King Oscar I’d rather get their Mediterranean Mackerel 😘
Hey thanks a lot for watching the video leaving helpful comment period I wasn't aware of those two brands. I appreciate that.
Is the Maitz good ?
I bought the wild planet the other day and was shocked at how huge the fish are. Couldn't finish them.
I agree mine were big also they didn't taste that good but were many positive reviews so maybe I just got a bad lot
I'd like to see a video on hot salsa comparison.
Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I'm not a regular consumer of salsa but I looked online at the store and there are a lot of different salsa being sold so that's a very good suggestion.
The reality is that taste for price, taste for health and just taste come in to play.
My last few cans of King Oscar (oive oil with skin and bone in) were so oily ... They smelled like Cod Liver oil ,... way to strong and oily I often eat. Season thought Love to find a skin on but boned Sardine )
Thanks for the input, much appreciated.
King Oscar cost a little more but are by far superior sardines. I never noticed until watching your videos but the olive oil from King Oscars is more thick like regular olive oil vs the running watered down look of the Chicken of the Sea.
I agree with your point and should have mentioned it in the video thanks a lot for watching and commenting much appreciated
Mustard sauce or the ones in hot sauce
You have turned me on to tinned fish, I can't thank you enough for your videos that took away my preconceived wrong notions.
Rob thanks so much for watching the video and taking the time to leave a nice comment I'm glad that the video helped you become a fan of can seafood
I love wild planet, I tried every brand just to see
Hey thanks so much for watching and leaving a nice comment I appreciate that wild planet did not work out for me but they are very popular maybe I just got a bad can
Wild Planet wild caught Sardines are my favorite regardless of anyone else's opinion.
King Oscar brisling,is the King.. no princes here!
I wish King Oscar had a hot sauce one
Hey Richard I agree. Thanks for watching and commenting
they have a tasty brisling jalapeno one
Now then Robb Sardines in a tin Are always a winner Pilchards Are also good for us thrifty shopper 😃👍
Hello Smith, it's always good to hear from you. Are you getting ready for the fishing season? We used to have pilchards in a can. Some years ago, but I don't see them anymore. Over here.
Chicken of Sea is a winner
Would make a great sandwich or just if you’re hungry and need something to eat or “tuna” salad
And for a third of the price I don’t see the need to buy King Oscar
I agree king Oscar is the best but after you consider the price chicken of the sea it's fine by me
@@RobbsHomemadeLife I’m trying to save money right now on food, but I definitely prefer King Oscar
King Oscar is like 3x better and that’s why it’s 3x the price, but by no means is CotS a low quality product
CotS is a high quality product, maybe not their flavors, but the integrity is there
Don't see it here but ammonia = fish = spoiled.
Ammonia is never a good sign
I want to be a lucky alley cat near your apartment dumbster in the next couple days, licking plates. They all taste so good. I like the ones in tomato sauce..
Hey Jonathan thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate it
I find almost all Moroccan sardines taste like tuna, they have that tuna tang.
Hey Scott appreciate that tip much appreciated.
My brands, since I am a hard working man,😂😂😂😂😂 I prefer Aldi's brand, Northern Catch, or Beach Cliff's Fish Steaks. 😂😂😂😂😂
I'm familiar with beach cliffs brand but I will have to check out all these brand thanks for your information much appreciated
If you had cats...😂😂😂😂😂
I cant eat any of that canned fish..ive tried it i cant get into it...much prefer fresh fish.
I'm sorry you don't like canned fish but I appreciate you watching and commenting thanks again
I watched the whole video, and I don't even like sardines.
Hey thanks a lot I really appreciate that.
Sardines have less heavy metals than tuna
I agree. Sardines, herring, pilchard, can mackerel clams are all good choices for less heavy metals. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
that wild planet looked like animal food
I think they must have been a bad batch. If you read the reviews on Amazon many people love them. Mine tasted of ammonia. And the texture was wooden. They were some of the worst sardines I ever had.
Kinda Biased yes ? I just go for flavor,I could give a shit if they are soft
Don't eat food that smells like ammonia!
Chicken of the Sea are to mushy for me. I like a little firmness to my deens,, but great comparison. I look forward to the Salisbury steak TV dinner one that's one of my favorites. PS. a price comparison would help out a bunch as well, some of us can't afford the pricier stuff.
Hey thanks for watching and commenting I appreciate that by the way I did the Salisbury steak comparison earlier you can find it in my review playlist
@RobbsHomemadeLife great I'll look for it
@RobbsHomemadeLife great I'll look for it
I'm commenting just to 'up' your stats because I do not like sardines (or shrimp). They are Ewwww.
Hey Island gal, I know what you mean. There are some canned fish I don't like. Also, I don't like shrimp unless it is very fresh. I grew up catching my own shrimp and eating it the same night. That spoiled me. I appreciate the comment.
@@RobbsHomemadeLife I even slid the time indicating line to the end as if watched. I couldn't actually watch it though. There are some things I just will not do...
@@RobbsHomemadeLife yeah shrimp gets Rubbery with age
🐟🙂
👍😀
No Tiny Tots? Come on!
Hey thanks for leaving the comment I have never heard of tiny tot sardines before and looked them up the cheapest can I could find was$9 where do you get your sardines from
I'd like to hear content like this but I don't want to watch it for 20 minutes.
You can increase the speed of the video
King Oscar is the best, king indeed.
Chicken of the Sea is less money, though, less quality.
I make a jerk/garlic butter, melt it, spread it on tortillas, fry the tortillas, than eat them with sardines and “special” hot sauce.
To die for imo, unless you are against heat, Heaven on Earth.
Oh snap, I wouldn’t spread my sardines, unless it’s on a (double) paper plate.
Brave man this is
And I find eating canned fish, far more enjoyable to eat wit chop sticks, just a lil hint
But the fact that he plopped them on a plate, gave us a better look at the product, good on this man.
Sardine comparison will change a life, no doubt.
