idk if its because he plays with Ovi or because playmakers are underrated in general, but Backy is easily the most underrated great player in the NHL
Sadly playmakers are super underrated, Adam Oates is probably the single best passer ever but hes never talked about as a great and Backstrom will be the same way
@@RIPJimmyA7X It depends whom you ask, but I think Oates gets a good degree of respect and Backstrom will when it's all over. Gretzky was a playmaker, as are Crosby and Malkin, so I don't think being a playmaker is the problem. In Backstrom's case it's Ovechkin, and perhaps in Oates' case it was Bondra--the elite scorer who often got more of the limelight. But Oates is in the Hall of Fame; Bondra is weirdly not.

Truly increidble how it all unfolded! From the draft in 06 he was attached to ovi's hip in almost every game and then in 2018, even though they had allready beaten the penguins they had one more arch enemy to face, Fleury and in true story book fashion they succeded against him too!
god that penalty kill was so good. and I don't think it's the only time he's done it, either

My favorite player of all time
Came here in the offseason in 2022 to cry a little bc I think his career is unfortunately pretty much over now after the hip operation and the team preparing to be without him for the regular season. Adding Strome pretty much solidifies the top 6 cuz idk if Backstrom could even be half of what he was after this recovery at his age And it makes no sense to pay a 3rd line center that much money.

Backström reminds me a lot of Mitch Marner. A playmaker that works hard on both ends of the ice, plays a major role on both powerplay and penalty kill while still, somehow being overshadowed by their linesmate (obviously Ovi for Backström and Matthews for Marner). Is that a valid comparison or am I dumb?
To me, Marner reminds me Backstrom instead.
