    I once heard Backstrom described as a guy who has an ability that sounds ordinary but in actually is quite rare: he can reliably put together a string of 3 or 4 exceptionally good small decisions in a single shift. And that is *exactly* what happens when you watch him play. As a fan you'll be talking to the screen, calmly at first, "oh good", "good," "nice", "I like that," then, like a chess master as you see the checkmate developing, "yes," "Yes," "YES!!!!!" and before you know it the puck is in the net.

    Watched almost every game of this amazing duo last 6-7 years, I can say that Nick has been Mr. Consistency, the yin to Ovi yan, the calming presence to Ovi 'wild' nature on the ice. :) Very smart player, for many years he used to play on the power play & kill, underrated good defensively & great passer. Almost never missed a game with some injs. last couple of years. With the emergency of Kuznetsov, Backstrom took the 2nd line duties, without any fuss, always doing what's asked from him & delivers consistent numbers. Being 34yrs age & having 3 more years on his current contract, the numbers & accolades he has with the Capitals, I expect him to keep producing decently & eventually getting into the HOF! ;)

    Been a caps fan since Ovi entered the league, and its funny because over the years you learn to appreciate both of them. Backstrom has always been one of those guys who just play hockey. No chirping, no issues, no crying, just goes and does his job which is why hes just one of those guys nobody can hate. One of the greatest playmakers of all time (yes i said that). His vision, timing and IQ is just so unique. Remember how the caps Powerplay was so lethal? Its all Backstrom on that side wall position. And its funny because while he and Ovi obviously combined with eachother so well, he continues to put up consistent points even being on a different line. Im so glad you mentioned his shot. I wish he shot the puck more. The guy has had many goals where you’re like “holy shit what a snipe”. Goes along with his absolute bang on passing. His accuracy is nuts. So many things can be said about him, and im kinda glad he went under the radar for his career. 100% HHOF, and its gonna be so sad to see him, Ovi, Sid and Geno retire. To me they were just the staples of hockey for so long. Way to go Nicky.

    I can’t believe that when people talk about underrated players they never mention Bäckström. He’s been so good for so long. Ovie is obviously a ridiculous goal scoring talent but he wouldn’t be as insane without Bäckström. I think he should and will make the hall of fame. Although even though it would be really cool it probably won’t be with Ovie because Ovie is first ballet no doubt and I don’t think Bäckström is at that level. But I think eventually the voters will just kinda say “ah screw it” and throw him in there as well.

    I am a Caps fan, but it's tough to justify him getting into the Hall without the personal awards and All-Star appearances as you mention. The All-Star is about how you are compared to your peers at the time. But if he does stay healthy and quietly puts up a final total of 1400, then maybe. At that total he is near a Jari Kurri but has nowhere near the same number of goals. He is 3rd in assists among active players and 10th for points. Everyone in the top 30 for assists all-time (minus Henrik Sedin) is in the Hall. Backy is 97.

  • @Peksisarvinen
    @Peksisarvinen 2 роки тому +4

    All playmaker-sniper combos benefit from each other greatly. No different with Backy-Ovi. But I will say this, offensively, Backström has benefited from Ovi way more than Ovi has from Bäckström. A lot of his assists are secondary assists, where he drops the puck to a defenseman, who passes to Ovi, who scores. Easiest points in the league.
    However, if you consider the whole, his significance to the team can not be overstated. Not only is he a great playmaker and one of the best playmakers in the league, he's also the perfect player to play alongside Ovi in other ways: a calm, responsible presence who can calm the game down, and play the difficult, defensive parts of the game as well as anyone can. Which has always worked perfectly with Ovechkin's explosive, exciting, high risk-high reward style.
    Not only that, he is also an absolute class act, and a guy any team would be lucky to have in their locker room. Never have I ever got the impression that he minds being in Ovechkin's shadow, and never have I heard any complaints from him. He just goes out and does his job effectively, and I think any Caps fan would agree that Bäckström is the second biggest reason for the Caps' success over the past 15 or 16 years. And for most other teams, he'd be the biggest reason.
    And yeah, he absolutely makes the HoF. No question. Also a fun fact I just realized: When Bäckström came into the league you had a Finnish goalie and a Swedish center both called Nicklas Bäckström. Now, you have a Finnish centerman and a Swedish defenceman both called Sebastian Aho.

    Nick Backstrom isn’t good enough for the NHL anymore either. He will be given a chance at camp because he has been so good for so long with the caps. Athletes themselves are the last to see they are done. He like Iginla, Thornton, Marleau and many others may be forced out of league which is a pitiful way to go. Backstrom won the cup unlike those others named. He tried to play last year and was terrible. After his return the caps quickly fell out of the playoff race. The GM wants him to retire, not be traded or scratched every game. Would be great if he beat the odds and delivered a + season and 40 pts in 70+ games. That would be a huge success, but he may very well not dress a single game. The caps are going for the playoffs and if backstrom doesn’t have a major improvement in play he will be gone early in the season if given games at all. A couple healthy much cheaper players from the caps minor league team is a better solution than having an old injured Backstrom out there not being able to skate.
