How these young people from Central Europe can capture the idiom and cadence of the great American outdoors is simply astonishing! Congratulations maestro Becan!
I find it extremely refreshing to hear a European orchestra who "gets" Copland. The inherent beauty, optimism and assurance so inherent in Copland's America is so often missed somehow, but not here. Bravo!

Young brilliant performers handled by. surprisingly, by an equally brilliant conductor. The rehearsals must have been a hoot. It's pure joy listening to this version.
The most beautiful performance of this uniquely American symphony that I have ever heard, including performances that I have heard in person by the Boston Symphony, L.A. Philharmonic, and even my hometown orchestra here. And all the more amazing considering that this is an orchestra composed almost completely of high school students and young adults. Wow! The rest of the music world could learn valuable lessons by listening to these wonderful young people. 😊💖💖
Many thanks. You have spoken for me. So much of what this orchestra has given us is the best rendition available. This comes close to their interpretation of Dvorak's New World symphony, which to me is the truest rendition in the world. Both are absolutely the best.
@@priscilladwight8547 Thank you, Priscilla. This orchestra is no more, but hopefully my friend Primoz, who founded it in 2002 and directed it those sixteen years, will have a new orchestra formed in Kranj before next year, with Many familiar faces on the stage. 💕
Drive through the American countryside with this music playing and soon you will understand how well Copeland captures the essence of the American spirit!
I live in Montana, This reminds me so much of Montana; the wide open plains, the fertile river valleys, the majestic mountains, the endless skies. Come to Montana all you fabulous musicians and see for yourself! We love you! God bless you as your spread the beauty of your music around the world.
Dear Kareen I cycled trough whole Montana. Medora, Glendive, Circle, Wolf Point, Cutbank, Whitefish, Marion, along Kootenai river to Idaho and further to Washington State and Seattle. Montana is na amazing State.
When a concert theme is American music Copeland must be performed! Appalachian Spring is a wonderful choice. In fact it won the Pulitzer prize for music in 1942! It has been described as “one of the most inspiring and symbolic works of the century.” In one sense it takes courage to perform such a master piece. So how did Maestro Bečan and the Gimnazija Kranj orchestra do? SUPERB!! Their performance was so incredibly beautiful! Not only was the performance flawless but these wonderful musicians played with a passion and joy that would have brought tears to the great composers eyes. A huge bonus to these concerts is the superb filming of the orchestra. No one in the business does this better than producer/director Mr. Zevnikov.
Dear Michael. Thank you for your compliments. I hope you are doing well in Alaska. I am debating doing Invitation to the Dance Night in 2017. It could be interesting musical journey. Hugs to you and Deena.
dear Angela, like you I discovered this orchestra by chance and ever since make it known to friends and family. They have a very special way of playing, very expressive, creative and alive.

This piece by Copeland can be difficult to perform rightly. With its varied phrasing, syncopated rhythms, and "old West" themes that are unfamiliar to many conductors, it is easy to give it an "off-balance" presentation. Not this time, however. Awesome interpretation! Thank you, Maestro!

@@BernardProfitendieu Well said. And I guarantee that Primož, Nejc, and all the "kids" in the orchestra know this, too. And "varied phrasing and syncopated rhythms", as the original commenter phrased it, are routine for this superb orchestra.
@@BernardProfitendieu It is true the title of the piece refers to a range of mountains in the East. But nonetheless I keep hearing expansive themes that remind me of the Old West. Why that is, I don't know, but that's what I hear.
Nadja Has been with the orchestra quite a while. She is brilliant. Kudos to the lead flutist also. I miss Ziva, the former lead oboist, she had tremendous talent as well.
Wonderfull performance. I was concerned for the lead flutest who looks like she was sick starting at 2:12 and through the performance. I was amazed that she played wonderfully through out the performance with what appears to be some kind of problem.
You are obviously new to the Gimnazija Kranj Symphony orchestra and to orchestral music in general. That is a clarinet... Not a flute. And there is Nothing wrong with her. That is Nadja Drakslar, one of the finest clarinet musicians you are ever going to have the privilege to see and hear, who just happens to be extremely sight-impaired. Doesnt affect her incredible talent on the clarinet one bit. I suggest you spend some time watching this incomparable performance of this orchestra and Nadja playing Mister Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A-Major, and then I guarantee you will never confuse a clarinet for a flute again, nor have any doubts about Nadja's amazing talent or how she puts her whole heart into performing. ua-cam.com/video/_0mIhjhUnjQ/v-deo.html
The lead "flutist" is the superb lead clarinetist, Nadja Drakslar, and was definitely not "sick". She was born 95 percent blind, and so must often lean close to her sheet music to follow the flow of the music. Look up her beautiful solo performance on this channel of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with this orchestra.
Nadia as usual is great with her solo. I would like to know more about her life. I noticed in this video that she is waring a wedding ring. Can anyone bring me up to date?
This was a high school and youth symphony orchestra, which performed from 2002 through December 2018. It was around 90 percent made up of student musicians from Gimnazija Kranj high school, with the remainder being invited former students under age thirty, plus a handful of music tutors from the school. Nadja Drakslar, the superb clarinetist here, and also Urška Rihtaršič, on the seven-pedal harp, are just two of those former students in this concert.💖
I wanted to love this because as an American I adore orchestras from other countries playing music of our composers, and even though their performance of An American in Paris was imperfect, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I just couldn't for this piece. Too many performance errors and I assume the conductor is the one who tweaked the arrangement, taking out large (and sometimes very small) portions of the orchestral suite. For anyone familiar with the work, it confuses your expectations and completely alters the flow, making it feel rushed and hastily put together. Plus, shortening the final movement, which is one of the most beautiful compositions ever written, when it's not that long to begin with is unforgivable. Dang...
This was the hardest piece for our orchestra. Imagine our kids, struggling to rehearse this. Maestro did it at his best. Even the most famous orchestras couldnt play this properly. Thank you for your honest review. I hope you still like our other performances. Greetings from Slovenia.
Such a shame that one player got horribly lost, but got picked up by the more experienced in the orchestra. I heard Slatkins version first, so I'm afraid that this performance was marred by that.
