Same advice from the new Wolfenstein games: “Inhale, count to four. Exhale, count to four”
I had no idea that was a real thing! Interesting. 🤔

Thank you. I have a huge problem with public speaking which is really bad for my career. I will try this 4-4 technique, really really hope it works for me.

Thanks for your comment An Nguyen. Public speaking is a skill and as with every skill it takes time and effort before you start feeling comfortable. You'll find that the more you do it, the better you'll be able to handle the nerves. And so jump at every opportunity to practice! :) In the meantime, the breathing technique can help you, I use it myself at every occasion and so do my clients and it's literally infallible ;) Have you tried it yet?

It definitely helps, I've done this since I was a kid. It will help with anxiety but it won't stop panic attacks if that's what you suffer from. I've been trying to stop panic attacks with breathing my whole life and it doesn't stop it. It works great for anxiety and very mild panic attacks

Indeed, this is a technique for the "normal" anxiety we experience when speaking in public (or doing anything else that brings us out of the comfort zone :)

I've tried this a million times when having a panic attack during public speaking. It doesn't work. It aggravates the hyperventilation.

My problem is that my thoughts spiral and I induce a panic attack myself. I little voice in my head says 'Hey you could lose control right now and have a panic attack. Picture your dad in the crematorium being burned, now imagine yourself crying in front of your student. What's stopping you?'

Hi you (whose name is not Jerome :) thanks for your comment. If you're experiencing a panic attack (literally), then a quick therapy could be a good option - could be worth to investigate what triggers such a strong emotional response. If it's a minor issue (that normally only you notice), then you could try these two techniques: 1. CALM THE MIND by replacing negative thoughts with more positive ones (yes - you can choose the type of thoughts that go through your head :) Eg. instead of "I am loosing control right now.." TRY THIS: "it's ok, I am managing just fine" . 2. CALM THE BODY TO CALM THE MIND - the emotions you're going through are directly impacting your physiology, if you can shift the body and release the tension, that should help you feel more positive and calm. True, this requires some body-awareness (something that you can practice and acquire over time). I'll link in the comment below another video in which I briefly talk about it. Hope it helps. P.S. Yes, I am Czech and I am based in Prague.
