I can't record anything tonight so here's one from Patreon last year. This is my full reaction to the legendary 1990 Nightline interview. I don't often repost Patreon stuff on UA-cam, but thought you might like this one. I was just rewatching the original interview and loving it all over again!

A lot of people don’t really get us crazy for life Madonna fans. It’s not just her incredible music, history changing controversies, out of mind stage performances and so on and on and on. It’s also HER. Her looks, her mind, her words, her speaking voice, her gestures. I love you reacting to this. I remember sneaking down to the kitchen to watch this broadcast after everyone at home went to sleep. She was larger than universe on that small, black and white television. There was no one but no one like her at that time; there still isn’t.

this was one of the times Madonna really showed her intelligence in an interview.. I mean I knew she was smart way before this, but this is when she really let the world know she has a strong and wise mind.. people never give her credit for her smartness
I like, not love, Madonna's music but one thing I will always love her for is her fearless defense of gay people. Young people probably cannot imagine what it was like in the 80s. Calling people the f slur was common and "respectable" people used it all the time. AIDS was killing gay men and nothing was being done. It was openly pondered that we deserved it. That we brought it on ourselves. You could legally be fired or kicked out of your apartment for being gay. People suspected of having AIDS were denied medical treatments. People who murdered gay and trans people could get off by using the "gay panic" defense. Going out "f@9 bashing" was a common pastime. Madonna and Elizabeth Taylor were about the only mainstream celebs that fought for us when they had everyone telling them it would ruin their careers and reputations.
That was the best way to describe what we in the gay community went through during that time and the two brave woman who wholeheartedly supported our community, thank you for that.❤😊

I have been a Madonna fan since she first came out in the early 80s. From day 1 she was attacked for being who she was. The bottom line is that the male dominated media did not like this strong woman because she was secure in her sexuality and career. The Catholic Church in particular were agitated with her because she was once a Catholic and she used lots of religious imagery in her videos. The irony is that she played them all like a violin because all the controversy just made her more popular, more money, and more powerful. I remember watching this interview back in 1990. I bought the Sex book (I still have it!). They sold it is a foil wrapper so you had to buy it to look at it. She was so ballsy. I feel that Gen Z and younger Millennials do not know the impact she made on music, pop culture, and women's power in the industry. Almost all female pop stars literally have been influenced by her and have their careers because of the ground she paved.

Thank you for posting this...I don't remember this interview but definitely remember the controversy at the time on MTV..I ended up renting the video and loved it...Very genius 👏 She never backed down and always stood her ground directly with example and support of what she does and why while always smiling and laughing in the end. Some artist can't defend their art with such force as MADONNA does. She has always been a tough woman and the fact that she keeps on smiling means she knows how ridiculous all those questions are.

The media, music industry commentators, purveyors of gossip-for-profit, and even fellow entertainers have always been split in their regard for Madonna. There are those that appreciate and understand her professional endeavours as performance art, and there are those that treat her with continual disdain. It has been this way for over four decades, and shows no sign of changing. Madonna is still expressing herself - whether those invested in upholding patriarchal structures are ready or not. Thank God for Madonna.

I've always thought this interviewer did a great job...he played a bit of devil's advocate but then let her speak fully and actually listened to her responses.
He was far more respectful than many others would have been.
I think she must've thought the same because a few years later she invited him into her NY apartment for a very intimate interview.
I still have my video single of Justify My Love. It also has the Vogue MTV performance on it as well, ironic since they banned the JML video in the first place.
Madonna is absolutely right and I agreed with her 100 percent .The parents are not doing their job and these kids are eventually going to find out and learn about these topics anyway from their friends so parents can not protect their children forever.Sexuality ,bisexuality,homosexuality and cross dressing is a reality and really does exist in the real world so these parents should just deal with it .

Sarcastic as she wanted to be, I was already 15 and perhaps naive (or stupid) and I didnt quite “enjoyed” the Justify My Love video (i thought it was ugly)… I did love the Express Yourself visuals… chains, steam, etc… So I dont know your age or the age of the owner of this channel, but even his work commenting on this interview needs the context of that era… bcs times have clearly changed… and id say dramatically and abruptly…

for most (all) of these kids/young adults watching videos or interviews from madonna's first imperial phase, which peaked with like a prayer/vogue/justify my love/blonde ambition/and truth or dare (I mean.. what a fucking run) and then came crashing down with erotica (now retrospectively seen as a masterpiece), they have absolutely no idea what they're about to watch. they know nothing about her or what she was doing back then. they barely know the songs and they've never seen the videos or interviews.
so it's just such a delight for me to see them become fans before my very eyes, to see their astonishment at how ahead of her time she was. they finally "get it".
this nightline interview about the 'justify my love' controversy is not something anyone my age will ever forget. this was a huge moment in pop culture and is an unforgettable cultural touchstone.
to see that her candor and intelligence and humor has not aged one bit and is just as amusing and entertaining and revolutionary now to a young person is just great.

he's right on there. and actually, when I think about it.. degrading Kevin Costner in 'Truth or Dare' might be the ONLY thing Madonna has ever apologized for.

all of that said, at the Celebration tour, 'Justify My Love' is performed within a writhing orgy scene of all the dancers, many of whom are partially or fully nude. It is perfectly staged. It is incredibly erotic. Madonna is in her 60s and does not give a fuck as she wraps her pussy around a young man's head and is lifted up and rotated around.. and as she spins, she slowly lifts the microphone and delivers that famous line, and it is singularly the most iconic and electric moment I have ever experienced in my entire life.
it sent a shockwave of hushed silence and awe thru the arena because it was like seeing, the Mona Lisa come to life, or going back in time and seeing Michaelanglelo sculpting David... it's something we know was coming but it's power took the entire arena by surprise.

in the 80s/90s, she was talking to all of us with marginalized sexualities or sexual fantasies we were ashamed of.. which, turns out, was all of us. even straight people.

I remember watching this at the time and it was an insane thing to even have her on. I suppose modernly you'd say it's the equivalent of being on Newsnight in the UK. People would stay up to watch because she would "sell" either in terms of viewers or print copies. This was pre-internet and at the peak of her career peak (1989-91) when nobody could touch her, not even Michael Jackson who, despite what sources say, was a little jealous of her (I know there are interviews of him saying the reverse but he was the one who wanted to work with her on "In the closet" and he was the one who got LAP producer Bill Bottrell, bassist Guy Pratt, and the Andraé Crouch choir to work on "Earth Song", but I digress). The thing with MTV and "Vogue" was her using her phenomenal power to say "play it or don't play it", proving that by that time, MTV needed Madonna more than Madonna needed MTV. Forget Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, or anyone else from today. Unless you lived through the "Madonna years" you will never understand the level of fame and presence she had over TV and print media. She could have put anything out and people would buy it ("Hanky Panky" anyone?) and she frequently did. She didn't really have a cultural "dip" until 1992's SEX and Erotica and even those provided hours of airtime and thousands of column inches.
Glad you reacted to this interview. She was at her most insightful around this time.
